Melted MacBook Connector

While using my MBP I noticed smoke coming from my MagSafe connector, I quickly pull it out getting a nice electric shock. Then after i unplug it from the wall I see that the connection had suddenly melted. Apple hasn't offered any sort of apology or reparation except a new cable for something that could have burnt my house down.
Heres a picture of it: http://flickr.com/photos/42272546@N00/152910732/

why do you make it sound like it was his fault? first of all i wouldnt put mag safe and yank in the same sentence because the cord comes out very easily. it takes no force at all to get that plug disconnected. no way was it his fault that he got a shi*ty defective adapter.

  • Melted macbook pro charger

I've had my macbook charger for less than two years the cord right by the adapter melted through and it doesn't charge anymore, along with the burning smell.
I really don't think this should've happened... Is there a way for Apple to give me another charger because this was obviously a defect?

chargers are covered under warranty for 1 year unless you have applecare.  You can always bring it to an Apple store and see what they say.

  • Melted MacBook, with Nail Polish Remover

I was at a friends house today and we were on her MacBook (not mine, hers is a standard white). She had some nail polish around her track pad, so I said "Lets use Nail Polish Remover to clean it" and we wiped it, her MacBook got really white around the area so I started rubbing it all over, What I thought was toilet paper accumulating was really little bits of the white plastic on the MacBook.
*So, we need a new case for a WHITE MACBOOK 13". 1. Were do I get one, 2. How much are they?*
    Thanks,
    PC

The MacBook top case is probably some sort of ABS plastic, which contains styrene. ABS plastics will dissolve in ketones, including what was probably acetone in your nail polish remover.

  • Connecting Macbook Pro to Sony Bravia tv?

    Hi all,
Firstly i hope I've posted this in the correct location, I'm still new to this forum, and all the technology I'm surrounding myself with.
I recently brought a Samsung 3dtv, I connected my Macbook pro via the VGA, all worked fine, however my new tv does have dodgy hdmi's and screen issue, so a new replacement will be delivered next week.
My Macbook pro was bought in 2008, yes 4 years ago, only recently did it start slowing down and playing around. So, my Macbook is not top of the line, with many fancy connctions, oppostie obviously.  However the dvi - vga does work and continues to do so.
My iMac was brought only a couple of weeks ago, so is more up-to-date, I still don't know what all the connections are at the back, but I'm impressed.
In the lounge there is a Sony Bravia tv, was brought last year, again i don't know everything about it.
Last night, du to the failure of my hdmi's i decided to connect my Macbook to the Sony tv. This simple task turned in to hours of touture, not quite but it was pretty horrific.
I went the way which i knew has worked and should work. dvi - vga.
I connected the adapter from my Macbook to one end of the vga lead, the other end in the tv. I also connected my audio cable. The same way that i have done for years, especially on a 6 year old LG lcd tv. And still nothing. (This way even works on a broken Samsung tv)
The PC output on the Sony was grayed out, and continue to stay that way... all night. Frustrating!
I then decided to try an old windows laptop, again nothing.
I also tried with my iMac, thunderbolt (i believe) to hdmi - hdmi, again nothing!
I even tried the hdmi cables from the cable box etc and all worked ok. Nothing wrong with cables nor the connectors on the tv.
I spoke with a technician from the store of purchase, he said.... It only worked on Samsung tv as it is a 'Smart' tv, and that i could make it work by downloading a free app called... AirPlay. : |
I find this all completely odd as like I've said, the 6 year old LG Nothing-of-a-tv LCD worked via the dvi (on a 4 year old Macbook) to a vga cable, through and in to the tv, also using an audio cable, I bet my life that if i connct it again right this moment, it will work.
Also my Samsung tv is broken, yet the same cable and Macbook still works.
Why does the other two completely different tv's work just like that and the one year old Sony, No!!!
All i would like to know is, how on earth can i connect my Macbook to the Sony tv and have it working as an extra screen?? with video and sound content?
Many thanks to you all. x

I run into exactly the same problem with PC input staying grey. The matter gets worse by:
    - if I connect a PC to the Bravia on the it recognizes it.
    - if I then connect a MacBook after it it works, until the MacBook is turned off when the matter returns...
    - with the earlier MacBooks (time with the round power cables before the magnetic connector) it worked well but newer display connector has this problem.
Hence it's somehow a Bravia problem or a signaling problem from this particular MacBook connector to Bravia (something signal is missing that should be there...)

  • Hook Macbook to Sylvania TV

    Hi all,
I'm very uncomputery, and hoping you can help me.
Is there a way to hook my MacBook up to my Sylvania TV?
    My MacBook is
    Model Name: MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBook5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    The TV is:
    Sylvania model # lc320slx
I did many searches for different connectors, and it seems that the MacBook connector I found is not compatible with this version of the MacBook. Any ideas on what might work? If so, can you include links to what adapters I might need?
Thank you much all great folks out there who can help!

If it's to following TV set http://www.radioshack.com/graphics/uc/rsk/Support/ProductManuals/55034850SPEN.pdf
    you'll need:
    - video
Mini Displayport to DVI adapter ($29 from Applestore)
    DVI to HDMI cable
    -audio
    miniplug to RCA

  • Magsafe problems and apple care

    Hello folks,
It seems like my Magsafe power adapter has finally kicked the bucket. I noticed that the portion of cord nearest to the brick that gets plugged into the wall started melting and frayed wires became visible in the exposed jumble of internal stuff. The area where is melting/fraying occurred is also slightly (ever so slightly) brown. I have apple care on my mac book pro, are these kind of things covered by warranty?
Also I have discontinued using the adapter and am running only on battery power (two hours left!)

    Folks,
This is just a follow-up. I took my Macbook Pro and frazzled/melted Magsafe connector to my nearest Apple Store, which happens to be in Shibuya Tokyo. They exchanged it for a new one, almost no questions asked. Except the clerk did ask if I was "injured" by the melting. Apple care, best warranty ever, even works overseas!
Oh and it seems like wrapping the cord of the Magsafe may contibute to the melt downs. According to the clerk, I mean Genius' explanation one shouldnt wrap the cord around the Magsafe when stowing it. Hmm....

  • MiniDVI to VGA adapter not working

Just last night the adapter was working fine at home connected to CRT display.
But now at office it is not working connected to LCD.
Nothing happen at all, MacBook doesn't detect the connection. Nothing on System Preference > Display, and nothing on About this Mac > More Info.
Looking at the adapter pins (male MiniDVI), at first I thought 2 of the pins fell off or something but after checking internet, those pins (21 and 23) originally not installed. Thats fine.
However, some of the other pins are shorter than others.
Is this a defect or original condition also.
I am not sure the problem is with the adapter or the MacBook connector or the LCD.
    Can somebody assist.
    Thanks.
-will try again on the CRT when I get home.

yup. but it still didn't detect.
by the way, the connection with the LCD was working fine 2 days ago.
so i guess the problem is either with the adapter or the MacBook's connector.
is there any way to check whether it is one or the other?
(other than taking them to the service center)
    Thanks Mort.

  • Need a powerbook ASAP what do I do?

Have a huge project that has jumped to start this week and really have no time to wait on Apple for a 17inch 7200rpm computer.
Can I work and edit on a 5400 drive. I would honestly be working off externals all the time.
The project is in HD 720p off the HVX. I need the PCMIA slot or I would get a macbookpro.
    Thanks!

If you get the Macbook Pro for this project, you will be kicking yourself.
Don't get the MacBook Pro if you are shooting with the HVX-200 and need the computer to download the footage. Plus, if you have firewire 800 drives, the Macbook pro would be a bad decision, for it doesn't have FW800 slots (as stated before, this connection type is being phased out). Especially if you need it now. The internal drive on the computer are not sufficient for DVCPRO HD. You need FW800 drives minimum. External SATA and SATA Raids are better, and there are PCMCIA SATA card adaptors out there. None exist for the Macbooks connector type at this time.
And the PCMCIA adaptors for the Macbooks connector type, as David S. stated, are not rated for the 32-bit P2 card.
I bought a Powerbook 1.67 just for that reason. I need to input footage from a P2 card, and I own G-Raids (FW800). I bought it refirbished, but you can also look for them on smalldog.com
If you need it now get the Powerbook..the Macbook won't work with this workflow. Not without the P2 Card Reader, but that costs as much as the Powerbook, and really negates the reason you are buying it in the first place.
Also, bear in mind, that editing DVCPRO HD will not be fast, nor will you have many real time effects with the Powerbook. The G5 tower is better for that, but not very portable...as you may know.
Powerbook...not Macbook pro. And for a tutorial on how to import the P2 footage into FCP, go to www.proapptips.com/shane - P2 Introduction.

  • 560ti OC

I bought the above mentioned card from scan, one of the fans stopped working after 11 months so I sent it back to scan. After a few days they sent it back to MSI. Now nearly 4 weeks later, I have received a used 560 ti which artifacts within 3 seconds of playing BF3. Scan say they will credit me about £74 or send me another refurbish.
What is the best way to go about this as I can see myself without a computer for months if I keep getting sent faulty refurbished cards.

Don't get me wrong, I had something like this happen to me once and I felt rather silly. So I wasn't trying to shift blame or something like that.
I know what you mean xmad, everytime I build a computer I always forget to put the back plate in that covers the usb, ethernet ports ect, at the back of the computer, so I have to take it apart again to get the plate in  .
I borrowed a ATI 4870 and it is working perfectly (allthough a little slow for gaming) so I can rule out user error
Thanks Steik, I hope it is sorted soon too, I have bought a few things from Ebuyer over the years but nothing has gone Kapput so I have'nt had to deal with their returns department. I know one thing though, Scan is one place where I will never buy from again.
I bought a MSI neo2 pfsir mobo eons ago and that is still going strong in my sisters office PC, at one stage it was covered in dust when my Neice had it, that much dust that where the PSU connector goes into the motherboard blew and melted the connector. I cleaned all the melted plastic and carbon off the connectors and 2 years later it is still working. So MSI build good componenets, I guess I have just been unlucky with these GFX cards.

  • Macbook pro Retina 15" a/c power connector melting

    hello everyone!
not sure if anyone can assist here and have knowledge of past experience or even apple support calls resolution about my issue with my Macbook pro retina 2012 model --- the magnetic power connector from the magsafe 2 is overheating and has burned out 2 out of 5 pins on the connector itself and 2 of the laptop one i can clearly see them black and all burned out. this means the power to the laptop is now inconsistent and i have to giggle withe the adaptor to find the right position and once i do the light goes from green to orange after a few attempts --- but then the connect gets really hot ( as much as i can not touch it again )
    question:
the laptop is out of warranty --- this seems to me a fault or a unique issue with this machine a/c power would it be looked at by apple support as a special out of warranty?
if not what would be the costs of repairing both he magsafe 2 (i have bought one now on the web ) and repairing the laptop power connection to ensure it does not happen again and burns out the machine or even god forbid it catches fire?
    regards

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Macbook Powercord Overheated and Melted

I got my Macbook in August of 06. Two days ago I came to it after leaving it plugged in and found the box part of the powercord that plugs in to the computer was frayed/melted. I can see the wires and it only works temporarily. I can see marks where it plugs into the computer that look sort of charred, as though it overheated. If I did not purchase the apple care package, can this still be replaced? Has this happened to anyone else?
Macbook Core Duo White Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Not too surprised unfortunately. I have two MacBooks in the home and have gone through 8 cords since May. None have melted, but have came apart where the connector head meets. As mentioned, Apple should replace it without issue as long as you're under warranty.

  • My Macbook is melting!!!!

    My Macbook is melting!!!!
This is a shame… I really like this Macbook and it was my first one since I’ve always owned Pcs; but it seems that I was not lucky with my Macbook.
It gets so hot that the AC connector and the place where you connect it its melting.
    I will post pics soon.
Please let me know is this is happening to you?

Oh, it seems that you should be able to. Do you have the camera set in macro mode? Usually the symbol is a little flower. Anyway, you should definitely get that checked out by Apple. If you can go to an Apple store, that would be best. If not, call Apple and describe the problem to them.

  • Magsafe connector melt down

Anybody seen this before? I came home and found that magsafe connector (the side on the cable) was melted. The middle pins are gone but the macbook pro seems to be OK.

Apple support responded very well (thanks Klaas) and fast. Before I called our local Apple support line, the dutch engineers were already contacted by their US collegues (who saw the pics) to inquire if I already called in. I'm getting a new Macbook asap and I will return my current one.
They could not tell me anything on the cause and I wonder if I'll ever know. This leaves me with one-month newer macbook, some days of frustration, reinstalling some software and some rare macro shots.

  • How can I connect my Early 2011" Macbook Pro 13" inch, with a generic Mini Display Port to HDMI connector, to a LG 32LD340 LCD TV, using Mountain Lion 10.8.2?

I have an Early 2011" macbook pro 13 inch (core i5 2.3ghz 4gb ram 320hdd) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and I want to connect it via Mini DP to HDMI connector, and a HDMI cable to a LCD TV LG 32LD340. When I had Lion OS, I had no problems at all.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • Is there a driver to let a ps2 keyboard plugged in with a usb connector work on my macbook pro 13inch

is there a driver to let a ps2 keyboard plugged in with a usb connector work on my macbook pro 13inch?
I know there are more threads about this subject but none was really an answer.
I got a keyboard (brand medion) with a ps2 connector. i wanted it to connect to my macbook so i bought an ps2 to usb connecter.
wile connected with my macbook the keyboard leds flash one time like they do when you put it in a ps2. but after this just doesn' t work
I think i might miss a driver or its just turned of somwhere in the system. an previous answer was said something about a safe reboot and a lot of codes but thats to hard for me.
    so any good solutions????

I've never found a PS2 to USB adapter that worked, or IIRC I've never found one at all. I have USB TO PS2 but not the other way. Just go out and buy a new keyboard. PS2 is so late 90s/early 2000s
