Memory allocation in my iMac, seems a little odd
I have a 27" iMac i5, with 16GB of RAM installed. Before anything, I will say that I'm amazed at what this machine will handle with that much RAM, but one always seems to want more.
Right now I have just built a new "filmscore" template, in LP 9.1.7. Most of this using Kontakt 5, but I have some EXS, Stylus, Omnisphere and other little bits and pieces. None of those are yet loaded up, except the K5 stuff, but there is a huge amount of library in that. In the past I've managed to do pretty amazing things with this machine, when loading up K5 and other stuff.Right now I have about 268 tracks in this template, of which I would estimate 85% is already K5 loaded. I have three Altiverbs on separate busses and a Waves L2 and Match EQ on the master output.
My Kontakt memory server shows 4.72 GB used, which is pretty incredible, considering what I have loaded up. However, and here's the real disappontment, overall memory usage appears to bearound 13.7 GB, with only around 2.5 GB free. True, right now I have Safari open, too, and a couple of other, tiny apps, but surely this would not eat into the RAM this way! And I didn't think the OS was so hungry either. I note that if I restart and open only this template, it improves somewhat, but I'm disappointed and a little confused as to why I can load so much into Kontakt, yet have so little RAM left, depsite the memory server show only 4.72 GB used.
Where's it all going?! Anyone have any ideas about this and how to make it more efficient, please? Assuming that's possible. Or is this something I simply have to put up with? I'm really blown away, though, at what this machine can do. I'm shortly going to upgrade to an i7, when the new iMacs are released.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Matching 4GB in that iMac will give you a slight increase in preformance over 3GB.

It seems that server.nlm is growing without limits. When tat occurs, I have the mentioned errors.
Though NWMKDE seems to have grown. It remains steady around the showed values.
I'm not brave enough to apply the memcalc's recommended fixes because the following line:
set file cache maximum size=822083584
returns an error saying the minimun value should be 1073741824.
Can someone help me because I'm completely blind here.
Thanks in advance.
GabrielI take it this is primarily a database server, in which case it's OK that Btrieve is using so much memory? You wouldn't want this to be a general file server too. Is the memory error causing any actual problem?
Server is asking for only 1mb, and due to fragmentation there is little free memory (actually 2mb left, which is a little odd, but neither here nor there).
Also, let's see your bti.cfg, which is the Btrieve config file. I'll paste in below an ArcServe TID on Btrieve using excessive memory:
Symptoms
Btrieve was upgraded to version 8.5 during the installation of ARCserve r11.1. The cachesize in the BTI.cfg microkernel section is at 20 MB (20480). (Pervasive would like this setting placed to 20% of the server memory or database size which ever is less.) The server will keep adding 20 additional Megs of memory to the total amount of memory the server is using for database transactions after each backup job. This can be verified by performing the following at the server console:
LOAD MONITOR
Scroll down to System Resources under Available Options and hit enter.
Scroll down to Alloc Memory (Bytes) and hit enter.
Locate NWMKDE.nlm in the Resource Tags list.
Sort by memory bytes and you will slowly see nwmkde.nlm move to the top of the usage list. Unless the server is rebooted the small memory allocations stays at the increased amount.
Explanation
Starting with Btrieve version 8.5 and higher, Pervasive has been working to make the Btrieve database more dynamic. They have created a two-tier memory allocation approach. The first level is controlled by the cache size setting in the BTI.cfg. If this becomes inadequate, the second level will be accessed. The default setting for the second level is 60% of the server's total memory.
The following line in the BTI.cfg will control the second level of memory caching:
MaxCacheUsage=60; default is 60% of memory.
An example would be a server with 100 MB of memory and the following settings in sys:\system\bti.cfg:
[microkernel]
cachesize=20480
MaxCacheUsage=60
This will cause the nwmkde.nlm to use 20 MB (20480) of memory initially and grow up to 60 percent of the total server memory or 60 MB.
Now you also have to throw Max worker threads into the mix. A setting of Max worker threads = 3 in the BTI.cfg > Btrieve Communications Manager section will also use server memory. It will use 1 MB per thread. In this example, 3 Megs of additional memory will be used. That will bring the total amount of memory used by nwmkde.nlm to 20 MB (20480) + 3 MB = 23 MB when the server is first booted. After running some backups, this number could go up to as high as 60 MB (60% of server memory) if the server dynamically requires it.
Resolution
The MaxCacheUsage=60 setting must be set down from this 60% number. Pervasive recommends setting this from 0 to 20. The server needs to be rebooted for this change to take effect. -
There must be threads about this, but apologies for my inability to find any.
As the title says: I plug my iPhone or iPad into my iMac, and when I look at the memory allocation as displayed in iTunes, 6GB or whatever are free. Then I sync again, and suddenly 8GB are free. Sync again, and now 2GB are free - even though nothing has changed. I get this with both iOS devices.
Additionally, often what iTunes shows has no relationship to what the device says when I go into Settings: last week iTunes believed there were 0GB in Photos - because after all I had erased them! - but the iPad recorded 25GB, somehow.
Is this a known issue, or is something screwy with my system?
Thanks in advance! Thanks, but that's not really the issue. I do manage it manually - I've got a lot of smart lists, smart photo albums, and so on, all set up to sync with the iOS devices.
The problem is that the iPhone/iPad memory, as displayed in iTunes when the device is plugged in, seems to be very inaccurate and variable. When I plug the iPhone or iPad in, iTunes tells me (for example) that, with current settings, 5GB will be free. It syncs, and then suddenly 2GB are free. I sync again - changing nothing, so there should be no change in memory allocation - and suddenly 6GB are free. Somehow, despite syncing no books at all, there's a bizarre 60MB "Book" that iTunes tells me is sometimes on the iPhone, and sometimes not. That little stretch of purple just suddenly appears some days.
At times it tells me it's too full and can't sync at all. So I wipe, for example, 6GB off the "too full" iOS device, and after doing that suddenly 10GB are free, so I put the 6GB back on no problem. And after I add that 6GB back on, maybe there are 8GB free, or maybe 2GB, or maybe 4GB. In my world, 10GB-6GB=4GB, but iTunes is using quantum arithmetic or something.
Wiping a lot of photos off was great fun. I had iTunes unsync and remove all photos - so, in that line at the bottom, all the photo memory allocation disappeared. Cool. Mission accomplished. Then I clicked to another tab in iTunes, and suddenly the photo memory jumped back up to 15GB. Looked back in the Photos tab - nope, I'd told it to sync no photos at all. Checked the iPhone itself: oh, neat. 25GB of photos, despite not syncing any. Eventually, after repeating the process several times, all the photos were eventually gone, but the whole process was bizarrely complicated.
Basically, when I plug the iPhone or iPad into iTunes, iTunes seems to have no idea what the memory allocation actually is - which occasionally makes syncing complicated.
It's not a giant issue, but it's quite annoying - and I'm wondering if this is just me, or if this is a common issue. I think this issue may also be discussed in some of the "can't delete songs" or "can't delete photos" threads, but some of those threads are so long and cover so many different problems that they're kind of hard to read. -

Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues
Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
Cheers
Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

IMac Seems slow and lots of disk access.
I bought my first iMac a few months ago. However recently the iMac seems to have got really slow. I use it for Lightroom and Photoshop.
Without either of these 2 programs open for example I can just try opening entourage or any other program even Safari sometimes and the disk will just go mad and churn away and it can take ages for the program to open.
How do I find out whats causing the system to go slow? or is this just something I have to live with?I think the problem could be excessive memory usage.
Just from looking in activity monitor when I have a few progs open.
Photoshop 1.96GB
Lightroom 539MB
Safari 236MB
Also under system memory it says ;-
Free : 27MB
Wired : 762MB
Active : 2.17GB
Inactive : 1.07GB
Used : 3.98GB
Page Ins : 1.41GB
Page Outs : 1.36GB
Swap Used : 3.14GB
Does it look like my mac is paging to the disk excessively?

My 24” iMac seems to gets the spinning colored ball a lot, seems it is running slow a lot more than it did before any suggestion?
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -
How can I get the memory allocation info of a java thread?
Now I am going to write a program to monitor the execution condition of the java threads. But it seems that the classes in standard edition of JDK does not provide facilities to get the information such as the memory allocation and CPU time of a running thread. How can I do with it? Can I use JNI or JVMDI to get them? If it could do, how?
Thanks a lot. I just browsed the specification of jvmpi. It is interesting and it seems that I can get the information I need. However, if I want to get the information in my program, I mean, if I want to build a class which may use JNI method to invoke the function written with JVMPI, and then forward the data to other upper layer objects, can it be done?

Internal Table Memory Allocation
Hello all,
I could understand the difference between Internal Table with occurs 0 and internal table with type declaration...
correct me if i am wrong, occurs 0 declaration occupies 8kb memory and header line 256 bytes...
But what i could not get is...
Where can i view this internal table runtime memory usage?? Should i have to check that in some transaction???
If that is the case, what transaction i should look at?? Can i view this in debugging mode??? I tried GOTO -> STATUS DISPLAY -> MEMORY USE and i have tried even SETTINGS -> MEMORY MONITORING ->MEMORY DISPLAY ON...Nothing worked..
when i go for GOTO -> STATUS DISPLAY -> MEMORY USE in debugging
memory allocated seems to be same for Internal table with occur 0 and Internal table with type declaration
I have searched a lot about this in SDN....But could not come to a conclusion......
I don't have authorisation here for DBG_MEMORY_DIFFTOOL or S_MEMORY_INSPECTOR unfortunately.....
Waiting for your replies....Hi Jagannathan,
You can view this on Debugger(ECC6.0) onwards.
To find out how much memory internal tables occupy, choose Goto --> Display Condition --> Memory Usage.
Choose Change Settings to display a window, in which you can choose the Internal Tables button.
Hope this will assists you for your quest.

I have frequent blocking on my imac with the little sphere spinning
I have frequent blocking on my Imac with the little spere spinning and some how as I've installed Mackeeper eveything seems to be allright so I don't understand what's going on Please can you help me
Mackeeper is a horrible preoduct. Get rid of it immediately. It's hard to troubleshoot anything else with MacKeeper in the way.
http://www.thesafemac.com/beware-mackeeper/
Can you also clarify what version of the Mac OS you have? "10.0.0" as shown in your profile will not run on a 2008 iMac. Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu will show your actual version, as in this example:
The OS version is indicated by the upper red arrow I added. -
Dynamic memory allocation failure
Dear reader,
We sometimes have a problem where our windows 2012 r2 RDS virtual servers, that reside on windows 2012r2 hyper-v hosts, loose their dynamic memory and only have their startup memory left to work with. Users start complaining that things are very slow etc.
If I check several screens (RDS Broker load balancing, hyper-v manager, cluster manager and the vm's task manager) it's clear that the vm only has its startup memory allocated. I'm not sure if this happens instantly or immidiatly after the nightly reboot.
To resolve the problem we have to call all users on the vm where it happens and ask them to logoff (if they are even able to), and then we reboot the machine.
I have checked the logs from the machine where the VM resides on and the logs from the vm itself. But I cannot find anything. We also have alot of windows 2008r2 vm's with dynamivc memory, but none of those have ever had this problem.
Searched the internet, but so far it seems we are only.
Can anyone give me a lead to troubleshoot this?
Best regards,
Ruud Boersma
MCITP Enterprise administratorHi all,
I'm going to be "one of those people" who revives dead posts for something that is relevant but obviously not fixed... sorry in advance!
We have the exact same situation, a bunch of RDSH guests with Dynamic memory turned on (60+ of them). every day between 1-8 of them will fail to allocate Dynamic memory and will be stuck on their startup RAM amount. This really hurts our users at peak
times.
I have engaged our TAM and have raised a case with PSS, Usual story "your the only one with this problem". Which obviously isn't true.
So, we have tons of free RAM on the hosts, 600GB+ on most of them, the issue affects RDSH hosts at random, across multiple hosts and clusters.
The screen shots attached are of one of our hosts from this morning. it has 8GB startup, 8GB minimum, 32GB Maximum RAM configured, with a 23% buffer. the host has 752GB RAM FREE. Notice how the perf counter "Hyper-V Dynamic Memory Integration Service"
is reporting "0", it should be reporting "32768". also under task manager on the VM we are missing "Maximum memory" which should be just below "Hardware reserved" in the bottom right hand corner.
Looks like the balloon driver is being delayed at boot time, we are going to XPerf all the servers in the hope that we can catch the critter. It's an unusual problem.
We only have Acrobat PDF viewer, word viewer, excel viewer and two custom dot.NET applications installed on the guests. Some of the servers are also just dumb RDSH hosts, with not connection broker configured, using an F5 loadbalancer for load distribution
and session management. All guests are 2012R2 patched up to March 2015, integration Services are installed and up to date (its an enlightened OS remember). -
I have Premiere Elements 2 and Windows XP SP3. We have 1GB of RAM and 500 GB Hard drive with only 50% used. I save my videos on an external hard drive.
I have always satifactorily burnt my DVDs with the system as it is, including a short DVD last week. In the last couple of days I've been trying to burn my DVd but Adobe fails part through the burning process as it is running short of memory allocation. We have followed previous instructions on the forum and turned off background applications. Can anyone help? I burnt something much longer without a problem about 3 weeks ago and am a loss as to what to do.
Thanks ErikaThanks. I don't use any stills in my DVD, just music which I import in the way I have always done and it's been ok. For information my audio clips are either MP3 Audio or Windows Media and files are up to 4.3MB. These are ripped from CD via Real Player (Windows Media seems to encode them and I cannot download to Adobe via WM)
Source: 44100HZ 16 bit and Data rate approx 23.4375 KB.
SHould I be doing anything else?
Any further suggestions would be appreciated.
Kind Regards

"Memory Allocation Error" when Building a DVD
Hi all!
I have a problem. When I start to build a DVD. Encore stops with a "memory allocation error". The project I tried to build is 3.06 GB, so it's must fit to a simple DVD. My HDD has enought free space.
I tried to build it on two totally different computers but the error is the same. I didn't find any answer for this error. Can anybody help me?
I use Encore CS4, and the project is made in Premiere Pro CS3.
The computer #1:
Windows Vista (but I tried also with XP)
1 GB RAM
250 GB HDD
The computer #2:
Windows Vista
2 GB RAM
160 GB HDDI get the same! I was having an issue with video files from my digital camera, so I opened up Premiere CS3, which took them in and encoded them to MPEG-2 just fine (tisk-tisk! Premiere and Encore CS4 both failed to play them or encode them properly!!!)
Them I put these MP2 files into a project which has 2 menus, 4 video timelines, 2 slideshows with 200+ images and some background audio files (one linked to a menu, another plays in sequence after first finishes). The project is for PAL screen, and it is 4-some Gb, but less than a disk. I have 4Gb of RAM and 6Gb of page file, 70Gb free on my HDD. Running Vista Ultimate x64.
Slideshows render, and videos do not require transcoding, so the project is ready to build, it starts writing the ISO file, and crashes after 1.8-1.9Gb is written.
There seems to be no easy way to re-create my slideshow, or I would have just re-built the entire Encore file to see if that would work.
My PC is overclocked, I admit, I have not tried it without an overclock, but my system has been uber-stable for 12+ months! I will try and report if it fixes anything, but I doubt it. I have also tried to run this build after a fresh reboot with mostly everything turned off, to prevent system conflicts. If that's what it is, I must have missed something. But Encore CS4 is BUGGY LIKE GOD KNOWS WHAT!!!!! This is one crash I can't get around, but it's not the only one I've had. If anyone knows an answer, PLEASE post it here! Adobe guys please please please please! My project's already held up for a month! -
Memory Allocation problem when using JNI
For a Project we need to interface Labwindows-CVI/ Teststand with an application written in Java. we are using JNI. The code uses JNI_CreateJavaVM to start a JVM to run the Java interface code. The code did run for some time , but now ( without any obvious change nor on the CVI side neither on the Java side) JNI_CreateJavaVM fails with -4 error code, that means that the start of the JVM failed due to memory allocation failure. First investigation showed, that even if Windows Task Manager shows about 600M free physical memory, you can allocate in CVI only about 250M as a single block at the time we are calling JNI_CreateJavaVM. That might be a little bit to less as we need to pass -Xmx192m to the JVM to run our code. Unfortunately just increasing the physical memory of that machine from 1.5G to 2G doesn't change anything. The free memory showed by Task Manager increases, but the allocatable memory block size does not. Are the any trick to optimize CVI/Teststand for that use case ? Or maybe known problems with JNI ?
Solved!
Go to Solution.hi,
have you tried other functions to allocate memory?
the -Xmx command only sets the maximum heap size. You can try to use -Xms. This command sets the initial Java heap size. -
Memory allocation error when burning in premiere elements 2
I have premiere elements 2. I happily burnt a version of my dvd then suddenly it stopped burning and I had the above message during the burning section of the process. My computer has adequate memory to run this programme and nothing new has been added. I then downloaded Premiere elements 7 as a trial and burnt this Dvd yesterday. However today it won't burn through 7 either so i am reluctant to upgrade unnecessarily. Can anyone shed light on why I receive this error message.
Other things seem to burn but I am beginning to receive messages that Adobe is low generally on memory allocation.
