Memory and dual channel problems

Hi
Can someone help me?
1- I have 2x512 MB DDR 400 Twinmos CL 2.5 and amd xp 2600 (fsb 333) and Msi K7n2 delta L. I have tested separatly my sticks, one of them woks great, if i put dram clock at 166 or 200 the sytem is always stable. The other stick is not so great , if i put him at 200, most of times the sytem doesn´t boot and the lights  in the d-bracket display memory problems, when it manages to boot, when i get to windows i´m always getting blue screens with error messages. If i put to 166 it´s more stable, but sometimes hapens the same, but less frequently.
I have run memtest, but it shows no errors in  both sticks.
2- When i use both sticks together in dual channel dimm 1 & dimm 3 sometimes windows only displays 512 MB, but if i reboot the sytem, i get 1 GB as it should be.
It is not frequently, but sometimes it hapens.
3- How can i detect dual ddr is working or not?
I´m asking this becouse the two sticks i have are similar, but there is a little diference, one of them has twinmos chips and the other has M.tec chips. But both are from Twinmos.  Sisoftware sandra shows them as equal.
I have heard that this mobo, on the boot screen should display something like this:
Memory Mode: Dual Channel
or
Memory Mode: Single Channel
But in the boot screen it only says DDR 400 or DDR 333 acording to the setings i have put in the bios.
My bios version is 5.1 (4/18/2003). Do you think i need to flash the bios?
Thanks
Pedro Cascão

Sorry, i forgot to post my bios settings.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR and Dual Channel

I just got an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ processor and 2 matched sticks of Mushkin 2-2-2-6 512meg pc3200 ddr. The computer works fine when the memory is in normal mode. But when you want dual channel, everything goes haywire. The computer reboots over and over. I have tried changing the voltage, and changing the memory timings, but nothing seems to work. Does this mobo hate Mushkin memory? I have heard of other people running dual channel memory on this board with no problems, but I have a bucketful. This board only has voltage settings for memory in the bios of 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7. This memory chooses 1.7 when I put it in auto mode. Could it be the modules are not getting enough juice? Any ideas?

Last night I was trying to find some kind of a solution to the America's Army critical error problem(yeah, got that too). I went to disable fast writes within the Smart Gart utility, and when I went for a reboot, my computer went into a reboot loop very similar to the one I got when I first tried to run these 2 sticks of memory in dual channel. It took a while to get the computer to stop it. At this point, I starting believing my problem was not a hardware problem. When I finally got the computer to boot into xp and stay fairly stable, I first ran checkdisk and had it repair any damage. I updated my video drivers from 4.7 cats to 4.8. I updated my bios, as a new revision just came out not too long ago. I reinstalled directx 9.0b. I reinstalled my chipset drivers as a precautionary measure. I then checked both memory controllers using one stick at a time, and both memory controllers checked out. Yes, I am using 2 sticks of 512 meg memory each. I then put one stick in slot one and the other in slot 3 to try for dual channel again. The computer booted up normally, did not reboot, and ran stable. I then ran 3DMARK 2003 and 2001SE, and posted new high scores in both. I am not sure exactly which action I performed was the one that fixed the problem, but the shotgun blast worked. I appreciate all the help everyone gave me.

  • MSI BIG BANG TRINERGY dual channel problem!

Hey forum, I just installed a newly bought msi big bang trinergy. Everything went according to plan except from the point where I installed the 4gb (2x2gb) ram dimms( I have the XMS3, 4gb kit by Corsair).
Let it be noted that i followed the instruction manual and installed the dimms in the proper slots. Then when the moment of truth came and powered up my pc, it wouldnt boot. It would go into an endless restart cycle without booting. Then i unplugged the dimm3 and started only using dimm1 and everything went well. I also switched the ram dimms (in case one of them was faulty) and placed it in dimm1 and again there was no problem.
My take on this situation is that there must be some hardware problem concerning DIMM3. I also run a BIOS update in hopes that something might change but no luck.
..So what is your take on this?
Thank you in advance for the advice.
P.S Since i had a P55 mobo before Big bang i read that format is not necessary so i didnt format the pc. Can that be the cause of the dual channel mal-function?

    Nope.
There are a couple of explanations for the behaviour:
    1) there is a problem with the modules
    2) the memory slot itself or underlying circuits is/are defective
    3) there is a short circuit problem somewhere inside the case which basically blocks that particular memory slot
    4) the CPU (or its memory controller) is defective
    5) there is some sort of pin-contact problem [bad contacts between the board's socket pins and the contact pads of the processor], caused by bent or broken pins or by too much pressure exerted by the CPU's heatsink
I would start poking at explanation 3) by testing the board outside the case on a non-conducting surface in barebone configuration and, in case that does not change anything, go for number 5): take off the heatsink and inspect both socket pins and contact pads for any irregularities [use a magnifying glass!]
I went to a technician to check the mobo where we tried different memory modules and cpu (100% working ) on a bench table. The pins on the mobo were not bent or anything. We checked all the points you mentioned that needed to be checked but still the problem persisted so it was a memory slot problem. Thanks for all the help! Really appreciate it, the replaced mobo works perfectly

  • Dual channel problems?

Hi all, I purchased an 8GB set of 10666 GSkill memory for my dv7t-3300 CTO core i7 laptop in December of last year. I first posted in the G.Skill support forums and they recommended I try HP, I will copy over my entire post there as it is detailed as to what I did last week.
Hi all, I've been having some weird issues that I can't be sure are memory related. It's lengthy but I'm trying to explain what all I did and why it's so confusing.
Last December I bought an 8GB memory set for my HP dv7t Quad (Core i7 720QM) laptop, the memory model is F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ. Shortly after installing them I started to get a random BSOD for MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, but it is so rare and usually happens when I am away from the computer. The past month or so I have also been having my web browser random close quite often, sometimes 5 times in an hour (I use Palemoon/Firefox and it is constantly using over 500MB).
This week was dedicated to memory tests, I ran memtest86+ almost every evening in various configurations. I started with how it had been set up for months and I managed to get some errors in test 5 that were around 2000MB and 3000MB. The next step was to run each stick individually... no errors after 10 hours on each stick. I then put them both back in and ran the test again, no errors again. I then switched the sticks around and ran again, got errors in the same spots. I also tried using the standard memtest86 and the Windows Memory Diagnostic available on the Ultimate Boot CD, neither of which showed any errors at all with both sticks in. I also found MemTest 4.0 from HCI Designs that runs within windows, and it found an error in one of the 3 sessions but did not say where it was.
I have since put my original sticks into the laptop which were 1 2GB and 1 1GB stick from Samsung. Thus far (less than 12 hours) I have not had a single random browser close and no BSOD. I am wondering if the problem is the sticks themselves or dual channel being used(I assume dual channel only works if both sticks are the same size). I looked in the BIOS and can't find a way to disable dual channel, or any advanced BIOS options at all, and I do have the most recent BIOS from HP.
Does anyone have any opinions as to what I can try before trying a new set of memory? If it is related to the dual channel I'll just live with it and get mismatched sticks, not going to send it in under warranty for something easily by-passable.
One of the site admins over there was wodnering if there was any sort of BIOS upgrade planned in the near future. I'm not expecting anything since the last update released by HP was in December of 2010. If there is nothing else that can be done I will just live without dual channel as the memory appears to be working. As I mentioned in the other thread, this is something too small to be without a PC for warranty work.

  • MSI GT72 memory upgrade/dual channel question

I just recently purchased a GT72 2QD laptop which has 12GB of ram installed (with 1x4GB module and 1x8GB module). The RAM is shown as running in dual channel, but it is asynchronous and I'm getting inconsistent memory bandwidth results when testing bandwidth with AIDA64. My question is, would I be able to buy an additional 4GB and 8GB module (I'm looking at the Kingston value ram), put them in the two free RAM slots inside the chasis and run the RAM in synchronous dual channel mode? If so, which slots should I put each module in to get the ram to run in proper dual channel mode? I would appreciate any help y'all can give me.

hope this information will help you...
    http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-011965.htm?switch=tw#flex
    quoted from Intel website above:
    Rules to enable dual-channel mode
To achieve dual-channel mode, the following conditions must be met:
Same memory size. Examples: 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB.
Matched DIMM configuration in each channel
    Matched in symmetrical memory slots
Configurations that do not match the above conditions revert to single-channel mode. The following conditions do not need to be met:
    Same brand
    Same timing specifications
    Same speed (MHz)
The slowest DIMM module populated in the system decides memory channel speed.

  • [Other 865 Series] MSI 865PE Neo2-V and Dual Channel Mode Question

Hello, I have a quick question regarding dual channel mode with my current motherboard. I have an MSI 865PE Neo2-V and am wondering if it is possible to enable dual channel mode while having three RAM modules inserted in the motherboard.
For example, I currently have one 512MB PC3200 module in my computer. If I purchase another 512MB module and run them in dual channel mode, will it be possible to buy a 1GB module or another size module, and still have all three slots run in dual channel mode? Or is dual channel only operational on this motherboard if only two of the three slots are occupied?
    Thanks.

Dual channel requires an even number of sticks.

  • 32 bit windows 7 and Two- 4GB sticks of RAM and dual channels

    Hello,
I have a Desktop running Win 7 32 bit. At the moment I have 1 4GB stick of RAM in. I have another 4 GB stick of ram(Same brand as the first one) . I know win 7 32 can't go over 4GB of RAM but was wondering if I put both sticks in will I get better performance
because it will be using dual channels or will it just MAX using the first stick and never see the 2nd becasue it is already using the full 4GB off the fist stick.

Thanks for your reply. I understand in reality I have really about 3.25 gigs. But if I had both sticks in would it be using all that 3.25 on one stick or would it split the 3.25 between the two sticks.
If you have 2 sticks of 2gig in run on dual channels I am told performance is better then just having 1 stick of 4 gig. I am just wondering if if I used the 2 4gig sticks which will only give me 3.25 gig will it use the dual Channel which would help performance.

  • Loopguard and dual sup32 problem

Hi I'm having a problem with loopguard.
    The topology is as follows.
Two 6500 Sup720 IOS core switches connected together via a trunk with two vlans - VLAN 300 a routed interlink and VLAN99 is layer two for management of access switches.
Multiple 6500 Sup32 CatOS access switches each connect via two uplinks, one to each core. Each access switch has 3 VLAN's - 2 User VLAN's that terminate on L3 interfaces on each core (ie No STP loop). And one management VLAN99.
Loopguard is configured on all uplink and interlink interfaces on the access and core.
This topology works fine, if I fail the primary uplink, cutover is nice and quick.
However the wierd thing is that if I install a second Sup32 at the access and move the second uplink onto the second Sup32 - If I now fail the primary uplink failover is around 30 secs, it looks as if the loopguard is blocking the port at the core. If I turn loopgaurd off on the uplinks to access switches with dual sup32's failover recovery is fine again.
Any ideas please, perhaps loopguard is not relevant in this topology?

    Les,
Loopguard can only be triggered on ports that receive BPDUs (as you mentioned, alternate and root ports). So it will definitely apply here, even for vlans on which there is no physical loop. You are right about point 2, however, you are probably wrong on point 1. The user vlans are not carried between the cores, so the access bridge is probably designated on its uplink to the second core. There is in theory no problem applying loopguard everywhere, but as there is no physical loop for your user vlans, there is no need for loopguard on the core-access links. If you absolutely want to enable loopguard on these links, in your particular scenario, it may be better to configure the access switches as the root for their respective user vlans (even if it seems unconventional;-))
You said that you are afraid that loopguard blocks the channel between the two cores. I agree that it would be a catastrophic event, however, that's probably what you want. Loopguard is supposed to help preventing uni directional link failure from opening a bridging loop. It would only be triggered on the secondary core switch (assuming that the primary core is root for vlan 99) and only to prevent a more catastrophic failure. Also, loopguard is applied on a per-vlan basis, not per interface, so its trigger on the channel could only affect vlan 99.
Loopguard assumes that a designated port will start sending inferior BPDUs should it loses its designated role as a result of a reconfiguration. If a designated port suddently stops sending superior BPDUs without sending inferior BPDUs, there is a link issue. This assumption is not true on a shared segment, where a designated port can become root or alternate as a result of receiving superior information from a third bridge (and thus become silent immediately). That's why loopguard is a point to point feature. The IEEE introduced recently a new feature much better than loopguard (the dispute mechanism) but it's only available in the latest MST implentation so far (will be extend to rapid-pvst soon).
    Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    Francois

  • K7N2G-L dual channel problem

Specs: K7N2G-L with 2 sticks of Crucial DDR400 128MB, 360watt Enlight PS, using onboard graphics, BIOS settings all conservative, SPD etc.
Like many out there I'm having problems with the PS/2 ports not responding every other boot. The 2nd board that does this, 5 months separating them. Is MSI ever going to solve this issue, or is it a prob with Nforce boards in general? It's completely ridiculous.
But that's not my real problem. Built another system using this board and it is extremely unstable. First burn-in blue-screened the system within 15 minutes, all subsequent burn-ins did the same. Quicktech pro identifies a memory error when using both sticks in dual band mode. So it's the memory, right? Not so fast. Take one stick out, retest, and everything is okay, no matter which stick. Put both in using dual band and instability and BSODs. So it looks to me like something's wrong with the dual band aspect of the motherboard.
No overclocking, memory timings all conservative, using SPD. Is this a known issue? I did install updated system drivers. Not a software issue as my diagnostic utility runs off a boot disk.
    Any ideas?

read the boards page ddr 400 only with a vga card
run ram 1.1 with fsb and keep fsb to about 185 max

  • Backstrom Episode 1 Missing From Non-HD and TV Channel Problems On Demand

Hi, I noticed that the first episode of Backstrom is missing for non-hd though it is up there for hd viewers. I have also noticed all of a sudden that most of the tv channels I'd watch on demand or be able to watch, now all say free with subscription and I have no idea why. I am now not able to see any shows on A&E, ABC Family, AMC, BBC America, BET, Bravo, CMT, Comedy Central, Cooking Channel, Destination America, Disney Channel, E!, Encore, Food Network, FX, FXX, FYI, HBO, History, Lifetime, MTV, NickMom, OWN, Oxygen, Showtime, Spike, Starz, SundanceTV, Syfy, TBS, TeenNick, TLC, TNT, TV Land, TV One, UP, USA Network, VH1, and WE tv. I also am not able to watch all the free movie networks either. Please put the Backstrom first episode back up for non-hd and please fix whatever problem is going on with all the tv channels on demand that I am now not able to see when I was able to before. Thank You!!!!!

    Hi Radhiap!
Unfortunately, Verizon doesn't have control over what shows/episodes appear on any On Demand channels and it's usually up to the individual network. I completely understand your frustration because those are both great shows! I hope you can get the episodes soon. In the meantime, if you're on Twitter, follow @VzEntertain - Game of Thrones is one of her favorite shows and she talks about it all the time. She also has all the inside scoop on new releases and popular shows.

    Ana,
While I understand and believe what you are saying, I also know for sure that I have seen complaints from other FiOS users that episode 123 or program xyz is not available on VOD, yet when I go to VOD that episode or show is there and I can view it. So sometimes there apparently are timing differences (and maybe other differences) between VHOs or DACs or wherever the VOD stuff is hosted.

  • Z77a-G43 dual channeling problem

Hello, I know some other people also had similar issues, but I couldn't find a solution.
I was trying to see if the components were working before installing everything in the case, and I have a problem with my mobo Z77a-G43.
If I plug my two piece ram(G.Skill Ripjaws 2x4gb DDR3 2133) into slots 1-3 or 2-4, the mobo does not POST and enters to an infinite reboot process.
However if I plug just one ram into slot 2, everything works great. I checked each piece of my ram, and they work alone in slot 2. So I guess the ram is fine. Also if I plug just one ram to slot 4, it doesn't work. I hope this problem can be solved with some tweaking of bios.
I also checked the pins under my cpu and they look fine.
    Thank you for your help.

There have been allot of "memory compatibility improvements" in the bios releases. If your computer is perfectly stable with a single stick.
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Flash to the attached bios using option 1 and point at the entire compressed archive then to your flash drive.
Make sure this is your board:http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z77A-G43.html#/?div=BIOS
The attached archive will flash your bios to version 2.7 and the ME8.1 1318 firmware extension.
I would suggest running memtest first (included with the tool) if any errors or stability issues, do not flash and proceed to try other memory.

Ok, you said that the MSI board cannot be overclocked. Fair enough, I guess you have tried it yourself.
If you increase the fsb speed to 170MHz, why not decrease the multiplier?
    170MHz * 14 = 2.4 (2.38)
    instead of,
    170MHz * 18 = 3.06
Also, do you know whether the mainboards that you mentioned (by Asus and Gigabyte) will allow me to increase the fsb speed to 200MHz?
    vaporas
The multiplyer cant be changed on the P4's, unless u have an engineering sample, and theres no way we [general public] could get one. Plus raising the FSB on the MSI board IS the problem, it scales the AGP/PCI with it, and doesnt allow u to increase the voltage for AGP and Mem. With the FSB on the asus and gigabyte, it'll be more CPU limited untill you get to about 210MHz, but I think you should be able to easily clear 170 FSB, if not 180FSB before anything becomes limiting...

    Clean Boot,
Re-Set Ram CPU ratio down to give 266Mhz.
    Turbo Ram Timing.
    Ram Latency CL2
    Ras/Cas Normal.
Al of which I was backing off, but rightn now seems to hold up
I was able to wind the FSB up to 118Mhz, clocking me at a mear 2.85 Gig  (which for some reason is higher than 118*24)
the good thing here, is when the system did crash at 120, the bias did not re-set! which was happening in the past.
At 120 I got quite a lot of graphical artifacting, but my gcard was running hot since the air temp here is at about 25/26C with sumer approaching (don't help does it!)
Anyway, I'll be ticking off a few more tweaks tonight.
I did notice that this did NOT improve Aquamark, but added 1000 points to 3dMark2001, from taking it from 11500 to 12500. Benchmarks moving more from CPU/GPU to GPU only dependant. Codecreatures is a good bench also

  • Memory and temperature questions

    Hi y'all !!
Due the problems I'd suffered from the MSI 875P Neo LSR board, I've decided to buy a new mainboard.
I've chosen the MSI 865PE Neo2 PFISR, the platinum edition.
I'm running my memory (see sig) by SPD-timings, at 2.7V and at Ultra-Turbo(MAT). I've got DOT disabled.
During the POST it shows under the amount of installed RAM: "Dual Channel, Liner Mode".
    What does that mean?
Also, I see in Sandra and Aida that PAT is deactivated? I thought that MAT is PAT?
My memory bandwith is also dissapointing.
    With the 875P mainboard it was in Aida32: Read= 5341 MB/sec, Write= 2335 MB/sec.
    Now it is: Read= 4712 MB/sec, Write= 2201 MB/sec.
Can it be that PAT is deactivated?
I also noticed an enormous increase in CPU-temp.
The 875P mainboard gave me a nice idle temp of 35C, and with this mainboard it's like 49C idle.
I've checked the amount of thermal grease, and it was just fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you in advance .
    Regards Arjan

well, really man, 52°C full load is nothing to worry about. my temps (full load) are always around 60°C and thats totaly okay for these CPUs. and the difference between idle and full load temps is never just 3 degrees so you better check those readings.
if you set your performance mode to ultra turbo in the BIOS it should be "enabled" in CPU-Z, when you're running your rig @ stock speeds. i think that it deactives itself when you oc past a certain mark (220MHz or so). but MAT is worth up to 400 points in 3dmark01, so its really a good thing.
but i really wonder, why you people are so touchy about sandra memory bandwidth scores... i havent noticed any "real life!" (gaming, editing, benching) performance increase, with higher bandwidth. even running memory in dual channel has done nothing compared to having only half the MB size and single channel.
