Memory capacity & speed for MBP 8.1?

I am a little confused. I want to put 16GB in my early 2011 MBP, which the OWC says it can take.
I downloaded Crucial's memory scanner and it says my MBP 8.1 can take 2x8gb of DDR3-10600.
But then I go to OWC and they say I can put 2x8GB DDR3L-1600 in it. OWC also describes my 2.3GHZ i5 as a 2012, but it is definitely an early 2011.
Who is right? What is the fastest memory this model will take as 2x8GB.
PS: I am a recent Mac convert and am in love with my Macs (2 of them).
Thanks so much in advance.

First, you are looking at the correct vendors and you can trust the memory they sell once you have resolved which model Mac you have.
Look at the following to confirm the season, year, and model identifier for your Mac.

  • Is this normal fans speeds for MacBook Pros? See videos of my MBP in action

I can't figure out the fans on my MacBook Pro. The lowest normal speed for the fans in 2,000 rpm. They will spin up at times for no apparent reason to 5,0000 or 6,200 with nothing taxing the CPU while it's also pretty cool, usually around the high 30's or low 40's celsius.
The other night I was converting a movie with Visual Hub, with the process taking 80% of the CPU and the temp reaching 75 c with the fans staying at 2,000 RPM until about half way through the eight minute conversion. This is a time I would have expected the fans to kick in much earlier than they did.
I have reset the SMC previously with no effect. Coming from a Polycarbonate MacBook this machine is much nosier, but also much cooler running.
Check out the videos I made showing iStat and Activity Monitor during these episodes. Thanks for any feedback. I'm coming to the end of my 14-day return period and wanted to verify if my MBP is operating like others.
    VIDEOS HERE.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggests.
S.U. -- I ran the Apple Hardware Test when I received the computer and it found no problems.
Travis -- Thanks for the insight to what normal range is for the MBP.
I opened a case with Apple to get the ball rolling and get assigned a case number. The tech on the phone could not look at the videos but didn't think there was a problem from my descriptions. He did suggest I take it in for a look.
Online I made a reservation for the Genius at the Apple Store that night. While I was waiting I was curious how other MBP's handled some serious thrashing. Since it was late and nobody was in the store, I loaded iStat Pro on three of the MBP's and opened Terminal. In two windows I ran yes > /dev/null and let them run.
On all three machines the fan speeds never got higher than the lower 4K rpm range. They all settled in around 90C and stayed there. One MBP ran these processes for about 40 minutes and the highest fan speed I remember seeing was 35XX RPM, and again around 90C, but it would fluctuate up or down a few degrees.
When my appointment came up I showed Rex, my Genius rep (Cleveland, Legacy Village store), what I had done on their machines just to get some perspective on how other MBP's handled both cores running more than 90%.
My MacBook had been asleep for a few hours. When he woke it up the fans went immediately to 4200 rpm and stayed there. He hooked up a super-duper, special, double-secret HD via firewire and booted off that. The problem persisted.
He took it in back to crack it open. He was looking for any loose connections but found none. He could not find any errors but agreed that something was amiss with my MBP.
He was not sure if my computer, being a refurb, was different when it came to returns. We called Apple on my cell, got a rep, and he arranged for them to take back my Mac since I'm within my 14 days.
So props to Rex for his great customer service and a happy ending.

  • I have the Jetpack 4GLTE, what is the Mbps download and upload speeds for this device?

I have the Jetpack 4GLTE, what is the Mbps download and upload speeds for this device?

The avgrage real speed will be more in the area of 25 to 38 Mbps  You would need to be in a strong signal area with high grade cell tower service and low customer use to even reach 50 Mbps.
From Verizon page.  Just be aware that using the MiFi 6620L can cost a lot of money. And you can thank the device's fast performance for that. In my testing around the San Francisco Bay Area, rathe device delivered blazing-fast download speeds that nged between around 10Mbps to around 40Mbps. At those speeds, you can burn through 4GB of data in just less than an hour. Once you reach the cap, of course, you'll have to pay somewhere between $10 to $15 for each additional gigabyte, depending on the plan you sign up for.

  • Sony Xperia Z2 maximum supported write/read speed for MicroSD Cards

I am looking to buy one microSD card for my Xperia Z2 Phone (6503). My question is:  how fast it can write data to an SD card. For what I know, these speeds depend of SD Card controller. If I will know approximative numbers I can acquire adequate microSD card. Right now I am trying to decide between: SanDisk SDSDQX-064G-U46A Extreme Plus 64 GB - 80 MB/s SanDisk SDSDQUA-128G-G46A Ultra 128 GB - 30MB/s Writing speeds for these microSD Cards are half of indicated reed sped numbers. I like 128 GB capacity of Ultra Card, but will not hesitate to buy faster 64 GB Extreme Plus Card.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you use 4K recording like features, you might need to get a high speed SD!(go for the Maximum speed you can)
So I think Extreme plus would be better in this case, but if your phone is everything for you (just like me) use the maximum capacity (Which has a better speed as well, otherwise useless) I use a class 10 128 GB!
As far a I know, I think even 30 MBP will be enough for a 4K video!

  • How important is memory capacity?

just wondering how many people here who have 16GB iphones use anything close to the full memoryof the phone?
Id like to buy an iPhone on pay as you go in the UK, but I think the price is really too high.
Im hoping that when the next updates come it might be possible to pick up a cheaper outgoing 8Gb model... just a bit worried about the smaller memory capacity.
Given it now has 3G.... (not quite sure how truthful it is to say its got "broadband speeds") but how true is it to say the phone memory is getting more irrelevant in the sense you have access to the net, and potentially "unlimited storage"? in fact wasnt there a company that was specifically advertising online storage that you can access with the iphone?
I spose the onboard phone memory will be needed for App and itunes storage? or are there options for taking those storage requirements online and thus outside the phone, and accessing them when needed?
    sorry for all the questions!

but how true is it to say the phone memory is getting more irrelevant in the sense you have access to the net, and potentially "unlimited storage"?
Not really true - the things that would take up the most space, i.e. music and videos, cannot be streamed to your iPhone (with the exception of many YouTube videos).
I spose the onboard phone memory will be needed for App and itunes storage?
    Yes.
or are there options for taking those storage requirements online and thus outside the phone, and accessing them when needed?
    No.
Basically, since you cannot add memory to the iPhone, if you think you might want more storage capacity, get it now.
Personally, I have ~1000 songs, 350 pics, ~35 apps and I still have ~9.5 GB available. Videos take up the most space - a full length movie will run about 1 GB, a 30 minute TV episode (really, 22 minutes of footage) will run ~250 MB.

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

  • Why is the memory capacity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?

    Hi All,
I'm new to all this . I have a question "Why is the memory capcity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?"
    Thanks
    Maggie

Why is the memory capcity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?
    It is not to Photoshop.
But to the photographer it is extremely relevant.  It determines how many images (influenced by "quality") your camera can hold before running out of room to store pictures. A larger memory capacity for your camera will allow you to take and store more and/or higher quality images.
("Quality" in this case is determined by  image size- the number of pixels making up the image in your camera and image "compression" -  how much JPG formatting will effect your image.)
    (attempted analogy coming... watch out!)
Think of the camera memory card as a linen closet to store down pillows. A small closet you can store 10 pillows on a shelf. Double the size of the closet and you can store 20 down pillows.
You also have the choice to stuff the down pillows in small sacks, allowing you to store even more pillows in the closet. The problem is after cramming the down pillows into the small container, they come out battered and not as nice as they were before storage.
    Linen Closet = Memory Card
    Down Pillows = images
Small sacks to stuff pillows into = JPG compression.
(and to add this this questionable analogy... the better down pillows have more feathers, and take up more room in the linen closet)
    Feathers = pixels

  • Adjust CPU clock speed for saving Power

Does anyone know which software is the best for adjusting the cpu clock speed in Mac book pro? I want to decrease to half of the original speed in MBP so that I can save power when I'm on the battery.
    Thanks

well I do understand what you mean but then I would like to have a software to control the clock speed like I control my fan speed although the default setting does that automatically. I don't really want to use it without a battery because apple does not recommend that also.
    Thank you

  • Looking for recommendations - new internal drive for MBP

    Hi all,
I have a 17" MBP core 2 duo from a couple of years ago, with a 100GB 7200rpm drive. I want to swap out the drive with a new 500GB drive, still 7200rpm, so I'm looking for recommendations as to what people think are the current best of the crop. Any suggestions?
    Cheers,
    Antonio

I was looking for a 500GB 7200RPM drive for my MBP 15" at the end of 2008, but no one made one yet. I saw the Seagate ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200RPM 16MB BUFFER SERIAL ATA listed as coming soon on MacMall and a few other places in January 2009 and ordered it as soon as it was available.
I had done some research on power consumption and performance... Tom's Hardware had some good info on the subject. The fastest drives at the time were the 320GB 7200 RPM and 500GB 5400 RPM. If the trends I came across during my research held up, power consumption for the new Seagate shouldn't have affected my battery life too much. All my research seemed to confirm this.
Now that I have been using the drive for a few months, I can tell you that my batter life has taken a HUGE hit. I used to easily get 5 hours with my old 120 GB stock drive... now, I'm lucky if I get 2 hours. Plus, it seems that this drive gets hot enough to cause performance issues.. I'm not sure if that's the case yet, but I will be bringing my MBP into the Apple store to check on it.
At this point, I'm willing to sacrifice some speed for more battery life and a cooler running computer.
All this to say, be sure you're willing to sacrifice some battery life for the biggest and fastest drive around.

  • PSE crashes when using the Detail Smart Brush  plenty of memory and speed -please advise

PSE crashes when using the Detail Smart Brush  plenty of memory and speed -please advise

I have a similar thing happening here, but on my aging iMac8,1 (3.06, 6 gigs of ram, plenty of internal and external scratch space) No wacom here, a Logitech mouse though, running via USB overdrive.
With me it's undos that are typically causing the hang, and as such, I notice it happening and don't keep clicking around. It hangs for anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes or so and then I can continue working.  Once, it was happening on a document I had open for a while, once it was occurring on a file I opened, made an errant click, and hit undo.  This was a 46.6 MB CMYK tif. I also had it occur while drawing a simple selection with the polygonal lasso - each time it would hang on the third click.  That time, it would unhang, but then the selection would be all messed up and not display what was being selected.
Each time it happens, I see photoshop pinned at 99-100% in iStat.  Doesn't seem to be related to running out of memory, as there is usually a good amount free when it's happening.  I tried using the internal drive as the swap, and that didn't seem to matter.
I've been forced to go back to CS5 for the time being, but would love to see this solved.  Is there any further info I could provide?

  • Recomended Broadband Speeds for new Apple TV

I was about to purchase an Apple Tv earlier today, but wanted to check the recommended broadband speeds for the service.
We suffer from speeds of 2.5mbps; probably not a problem with Apple TV - being able to download to the HDD for viewing later. However, streaming only is a little concerning - especially as we'd be looking at HD stuff.
Have Apple said what speeds are required? Is contents buffered to some sort of memory until it is ready to be viewed.

The avatar HD film was 5.8gb in size from the itunes store. My internet speed is usually around 9.8mbps but can drop down to 7mbps in busy times. I rent HD films a lot and it usually takes about 20 seconds to 1 minute from pressing rent to being able to play the HD movies. Only once have I had an issue with the film freezing up half way through, it turned out the internet went down on my ISP side of things.
As apposed to having 2.5mbps I am not to sure on times but it would just be a case of waiting longer at the beginning before pressing play, for the film to build up in the buffer so you don't catch up to where the film has got to in downloading. That is if my understanding of the apple tv downloads and plays at same time is right! If I am wrong I would be very interested in knowing exactly how it works.
But to answer the question at the beginning I have not seen an official minimum download speed for the apple tv but looks like from other peoples experiences you can't go wrong with something bigger than 6/7mbps.

  • Can I get more speed for free?

I signed up for the 768Kbps/128Kbps plan about two years ago. Now that plan appears to be a higher speed of 1 Mbps / Upload up to 384 Kbps. Can I get upgraded this new speed for free?

It would depend on the local loop from the Co to your location. I had the same 768kbps service before FIOS was installed. It took sometime before they could get the line clean enough for the 1.5mbps. It may depend on the distance. They should be able to run a local loop test to qualify your line. You would need to contact them and they will need to put in a service request to have your line tested and upgraded if available. I incured no extra charge for the faster speed because it was currently priced at what I was paying. Sort of like the FIOS when it went from 15mbps to 20mbps. All I had to do was call and ask.

  • What is actual speed for wrt54gl home networking ?

i am transferring large files from my main pc (wired) to my htpc (wireless) and transfer speed is around 6-7Mbps. is this the normal speed for the wrt54gl router? it seems a far cry from the advertised 54Mbps. i understand that i'll never achieve 54Mbps, but perhaps 20-30Mbps? router is set to G only, and on channel 6.
anything i can do to increase transfer rate?
    router - linksys wrt43gl
    modem - linksys cm100
    os - win7
    thanks

That's good to know that now you are getting 20-21 Mbps data transfer speed
