Memory card keeps ejecting itself

Dear Apple experts,
I have had an iMac with OS x 10.6.7 for a year now and for the last 2 weeks, whenever I connect a memory stick pro duo via a memory card reader, the card keeps ejecting itself every few seconds and an error message comes up "disk drive not ejected properly.
I have tried changing the cable, the memory card and the reader but the problem persists.
Please could you advise?
Many thanks.

try reformatting the card using your camera
and restart your computer

  • Device removal error.....   The card reader ejects itself

Hello, I'm new to macs and purchased a Mac Mini a week ago. Things were going well until I needed to move pictures from a digital camera to my mac.
I purchased a GE 19 in 1 card reader which is built for mac os x. I hook it up to a usb port and try and look at some pictures. After a few seconds, the card reader ejects itself and I get the "device removal" error. The error will then continue to appear over and over again. When I try to eject the reader using by clicking eject, the reader ejects and only reappears a minute later and ejects itself again. I've tried using another usb port and I know for sure that its not the cable.
If I can't get any prompt answer here, I'm going to call the Genius bar tomorrow morning and ask about the problem. <Edited by Moderator>

More often than not, when a card reader or other similar device disconnects from the USB bus because it is drawing too much power. In a card reader, that would not unusually be triggered not by the card reader itself, but by the insertion of a card causing it to read the content and mount the volume on the Mac's desktop. Part of the problem is that while everything is invariably quoted as USB compatible, many such devices don't entirely comply with the USB standard, resulting in conflicts or load demands which may be borderline, or worse.
You may be able to get more reliable performance from your reader by disconnecting other USB devices when you are trying to use it, or by using it with a powered USB hub. Occasionally, borderline problems can be temporarily resolved by connecting the device to a different port, if necessary switching devices around. Alternatively, it may be that in an attempt to produce a device with the greatest flexibility in terms of media compatibility, they have compromised on components.
I would generally recommend a card reader designed for the specific card type you need. These are typically far more reliable. If you need to use different types of card media, then be prepared to spent on a well established brand with a reputation in this sector of the market, such as SanDisk.

  • Mac mini mid 2010 hard disk keeps ejecting itself

My mac mini is set up with two sata disks installed, one is a 128 ssd and the other a 1tb hdd.  Since installing mountain lion, the hdd keeps ejecting itself, and i get a message saying - this hard disk was not properly ejected. then i wont find the disk in finder, or disk utility!.  I then have to remove the hdd from the mac mini and plug it into a usb caddy, which finds it no problem, and then when i put it back in the mac mini, it works again!! so the disk is not faulty i dont think.  It then works for a period as random as a few hours, to a few weeks and then i will randomly get the "this disk was not ejected properly" message and it has again dissapeared.  I use the mac mini as a media centre and it isnt really being pushed hard when the failure happens.
Anyone have any ideas as to whats wrong?

Hello, Sorry for the late reply.
When i open console after the ejection i get the message:
01/11/2012 22:32:42.000 kernel[0]: Failed to issue COM RESET successfully after 3 attempts. Failing...
    01/11/2012 22:32:42.000 kernel[0]: disk1s2: no such device.
Hope this gives a clue, i'm tearing my hair out over it.  there is absolutely nothing wrong with the disk itself.
If i do a full shutdown and restart, it finds the disk again no problems, but if i simply choose to restart from the menu, it does not find the disk again.
Thanks for any help you can give on this.  I have only been experiencing this issue since i upgraded to mountain lion.

  • External SSD keeps ejecting itself

Hi, i have a big problem, so any help would be really appreciated!
I bought a SSD (Samsung 840 non-pro) for my macbook pro and I'm trying to clone my hard drive to the SSD. The ssd is connected per USB in an external case (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B008...ls_o02_s00_i00).
Problem is that whenever I try to, the SSD keeps ejecting itself all the time, so the process of cloning aborts . Any ideas on what I could do? Please help, I'm pretty desperate by now, thnx!!

The USB port is not providing enough power to keep your external drive running. This problem happens often. Your best bet, and a permanent fix, is to get a powered USB hub. Should not cost more than $20.
The hub is plugged into the wall outlet for power. It is connected to the MBP with a USB cable. All your USB devices are then plugged into the hub. I use a 8 port D-Link hub. Have had it for more than 6 years.
Post back if you need more info.
(What I do not know - have never tried it - is whether I can boot from a drive connected via a hub.)

  • Having problems with copying the OS X to new SSD - SSD keeps ejecting itself

I recently bought an OWC 6G Mercury Electra 240GB SSD and a data doubler for my early 2011 MBP. I replaced the MBP's optical drive with the old HDD and installed the SSD to the main HD bay. After erasing&varifying the SSD I started cloning my old system to the SSD. This is when the problems started. The SSD keeps ejecting itself everytime I try to copy something to it or when I try to varify it. My OS X is 10.9.2. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

There is a recall on the 15"

Are you using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper? Did you try cloning from an external USB? or to one holding the SSD?
If the latter is successful, that would point to the SATA cable being faulty.
It does seem that SSDs are more sensitive to a defects in SATA cables than HDDs are.

  • Disk Keeps Ejecting Itself

    I've got a dane-elect multi-card reader.
I insert my canon 7D's compact flash card, delete a single picture,
and my card is ejected. I tried verifying it in disk utility, it unmounts
and I get a message saying that the disk was not ejected properly.
I just did a verify disk again, got this as an error:

Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
any idea what could be causing this?

I'm assuming this is an external disk connected directly to your computer.  In that case, it's likely to be a loose or faulty cable connecting the drive to your machine.  When it wiggles a little, the connection gets lost.  (That also could cause corruption in your Time Machine backups when it happens in the middle of a backup...  better repair that hard drive using Disk Utility!)  You may be able to make it work more reliably by changing cables, or by leaving the machine untouched on a table or desk while the backups is running so it doesn't get bumped.
If the cable isn't the problem, it's possible the disk itself (or the enclosure it's in) is faulty, or that the port on your computer that you're connecting the drive to is damaged.

  • SSD keeps ejecting itself

My Crucial 256 GB SSD has been excellent as the boot drive in my Mac Pro 3,1 for almost a year. It seemed to handle all the OS upgrades with ease and ML was humming along nicely. Until about two days ago when I started getting beachballs every hour. I had to manually power down and restart to get back to work.
At first i suspected ML and found a thread here in which others were complaining about having to manually shutdown and restart. So I thought it must certainly be some corrupted bit of ML. On further investigation, I found a bunch of folks out there with similar SSDs that were mounted in Icy Docks like mine. Aha! So I removed the drive and took it out of the icy dock then mounted it via an external drivedock firewire gizmo. It ran longer before ejecting, but eventually it did eject itself.
Disk Utility found something it didn't like and repaired the drive but within 2 hours, it had ejected itself again. I have a new drive and new sled on order. However, I'm curious if anyone might have an idea about what (if anything) drove the SSD over the edge. What have I missed? Are SSDs and Mac Pros not meant for each other? Is there a ML connection?
    Thanks in advance,
    T-Ray

Are you using TRIM Enabler? 3rd party of course.
m4 threads were "popular" awhile ago (May/June) when they popped up almost daily - mus have been Memorial Day sale @ Newegg.
Firmware of course is first thing. There was an update very recently.
There was a bug in SandForce firmware on some models, not Crucial but amazing that here we are 4 yrs and every year, every new model that comes out, some issues and "field testing."
Definitely think some designs of Icy Dock don't fit right.
I would recommend in order: Samsung 830 #1 even if Apple was not now using them in their new Macs; Intel for great support and ease of firmware updates and testing they did; then one of the Marvell or top quality SandForce. Crucial m4 gets good grades and performance on PCs - just seeems like Mac w/o native TRIM means BGC works harder and not as efficient.
And of course you are using it on an SATA2 bus so while still good, it is hampered a bit.

  • Trying to Clone new SSD, keeps 'Ejecting' itself mid-copy

I have bought a Crucial M4 SSD Sata 2. I am using a macbook 5.1 Mid 2008 Unibody, running mountain lion.
I downloaded 'SuperDuper' and have renamed my SSD to 'My Mac'. I Then attempt to copy all files using SuperDuper, from my old HD to the New, using the selection 'Backup - All Files'
It starts to copy as normal, all looks like its going well. Then i come back around 30 mins later and the disc has Ejected itself and of course the process then fails.
I have attempted the process around 5 times now, and happens each time. I dont know if it is a connection issue, or a software/firmware issue.
To Add, I am Connecting the SSD externally using a SATA Cable.
Has anyone had a similar issue, who may have a solution?
    Kind regards.

  • Help getting 200GB file off seagate drive that keeps ejecting itself

    here is the problem...
    I have a G5 running 10.5.8
I have a Seagate Freeagent drive 1.5TB that keeps going to sleep and ejecting itself....
I have an iPhoto file that is in excess of 200 GB.
I want to get it OFF this drive and move it to a stable drive - but every time I try to copy/transfer it the drive ejects...
How the heck do I move the iPhoto file off this drive? there seems to be NO fix for the seagate issue.
    HELP! thanks,
    Jen

You won't like or want to hear this, but I would never buy name brand external drive cases like Seagate or Maxtor, too many problems, want to avoid proprietary and other issues. And they are troublesome.
iPhoto files are package bundles - just a whole lot of nested files and folders, not a single 200GB file.
Clone the whole drive or portion thereof using software backup or cloning software.
Would be nice if you could just remove the SATA drive and pop it into the G5 or into another FW case.

  • Memory card keeps popping out and i have to push it back in several times a day.

My media/memory card continually pops out and I get a message saying no media card. I pus it back in and then later it comes out again.
Anyone else have this problem or know why I am getting it? It is very annoying and happens several times a day.
    Thanks.

if it keeps popping out, I would return it to place of purchase and get a replacement.

  • SD Card keeps dismounting itself

My Sandisk SD card keeps mounting and unmounting in my Z1. I tested the SD in other phones and mounted it on my laptop and it worked fine so I think the problem is my phone.
I just did factory reset but the problem is still there. Any ideas what else I can do?
    Thanks, Andy

My z1 just started doing this too, it will all of a sudden say the card has been unmounted. At first I thought it was the card, tried to back everything up on the computer and the card basically died. Bought a brand new class 10 Kingston 16 gig card and seemed to take care of it. But it started doing it again. When I turn the phone off abed back on it reads the card again, but it's only a matter of time before it "unmounts" the card. I've tried everything I know how, putting the card in a computer, my wifes Xperia t, my old LG rumor, and old blackberry, the card works in all of them. What's the deal with the Z1?

  • Please help! 1TB SSHD drive in my optical bay keeps ejecting itself.

I recently purchased a 13in macbook (non-retina, build 13e28), 500gb HD with the optical drive running the latest version of Mavericks 10.9.4.  I decided to install a Samsung SSD (120gb) along with a 1TB Seagate SSHD (a hybrid SSD).  My intention is to use the SSD for startup and for all my apps and to use the SSHD for storage of my music.  I have all my music from my 2008 macbook in an external disk and while I was transferring all my files (music, movies, pictures, documents, & downloads) the SSHD ejected on its own and I was prompted with a small window that said "Disk Not Ejected Properly - Eject "SSHD" before disconnecting or turning it off".
I've rebooted several times and even re-installed the OS on my SSD to see if that would fix anything.  I also verified/repaired disk/permissions on the SSHD and it still keeps ejecting the disk within 2 minutes of re-booting.
Can someone please help me resolve this?  Thank you!

Check the specs for storage of your macbook. It probably can only handle up to 750 GB.

Acutally the DVD might not work on her computer since the computer already comes with Leopard CDs specifically created for her machine.
Also, girlfriend's boyfriends do not qualify for the use of a Family Pack, until they get married.
The license is quite specific about who can use the Family pack. Friend do not count.

The phone's lock code does return to the default 12345 after a firmware update with phones that do not support UDP (User Data Preservation).
The MMC password does not get reset to the factory default simply because there is no factory default for that.
The file in the phone's memory containing the MMC password is erased when the software is updated, which means that the phone no longer remembers the password. The phone then prompts the user for it, which is when they wish they'd made a note of it somewhere!
