Memory cards File limitation - IMPORTANT

Hello all,
This may be old news to many of the techies out there. But just wanted to get this out for other people that may not know this.
Memory cards are formatted into FAT (File Allocation Table), format. This format (also used in PC Hard Drives) has a specific limit on the number of files it may have on a single folder.
The limit is 1000 (one thousand) files.
So if you are trying to move 1000 files into the root folder of a 2 GB memory card chances are it will fail or give and error message.
This limitation is not Nokia's but part of the FAT format. So to avoid problems keep this in mind if you are trying to save a lot of pictures or songs in a single folder, it won't take more than 1000 individual files. Sometimes when you drag and drop all the hidden files will also be moved, so you may not know that you are transfering more than 1000 files. You have to change the options in the Windows to show hidden files and folders so that you know what is actually being transferred.
Of course you can have more than 1000 files, you just have to put them in more than one folder.
This is also true for the N91 and N91 8GB HDD.
Enjoy!

People, please read my post.
You can have 10,000+ files on a FAT format card or HDD, but you can't have 1000 (one thousand) in a single folder or the Root folder (i.e. If you just copy all the files to E
Also, I have used N93 with 1 and 2 GB card and it works, albeith it gets a bit slower when there is a lot of data on the card and the card is getting low on memory.
So again, you can have lots and lots of files just not in a single folder in the memory card.
EDIT: Read my signature.
I've seen video footage of Bill Gates actually saying the 640K comment. Or at least I think I have... anyways, the fact is that up until Windows 98 (or was it 95 OSR2) they still were struggling with this memory limit. So even if he didn't say it, they sure designed the SW architecture to be limited by 640 KB.Message Edited by el_loco on 08-Feb-2007

the only thing supplied on the memory card is nokia maps, how this can be downloaded from this site.
gives you instructions how to reinstall the maps if you wish to do so http://europe.nokia.com/A4984199, apart from hat there is 1 or 2 video/music files and that's it.

  • Memory card files not showing up

    hi,
i have a 6230 and i use pc suite, but in mobile phone browser my memory card does not show up. all the other files are there, and the memory card works fine in the phone.
    any ideas?

    Hi,
If the above doesn't work, please find out what software version your phone has by typing *#0000# into the keypad. If it is an oldish one you might consider a SW upgrade.

  • 6288 Memory Card file size problem...

I have a Nokia 6288 which I recently purchased as part of a contract with `Three'. It's a great phone and so I purchased and installed a 1Gb mini-sd memory card to go with it. I wanted the memory card for storing and listening to downloaded .mp3 podcasts, but I now find that I cannot copy individual files of greater than about 12 Mb to the memory. (The podcasts are typically 15 - 20 Mb each.) Why is this, and what do I need to do to overcome the problem? Help appreciated.
    MajorSparky.

I was expecting you to say bluetooth. You shouldn't face this problem using a cable, very strange.
Are you sure that you are sending the file to the memory card, not the phone memory?
When you connect the phone are you given an option as to which transfer mode you want to use? If it gives you the choice try mass storage mode.
The phone will appear in windows as a drive and you can drag and drop your pod casts directly onto the memory card.Message Edited by psychomania on 10-Oct-200704:07 PM

  • Why memory card files sent through PC suite cannot...

Any files I transferred onto the memory card through PC Suite and USB cable does not show up when I plug the memory card into my computer's card reader. The same happens vise versa. Why is that?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. Use File Transfer mode instead of PC Suite.
    OR
    2. Use the card reader to transfer files.
    OR
    3. Check with PC Suite File Manger that the files are indeed in the folder.
    AND
    - Wait until the files are copied. Just because Windows showed the files copied doesn't mean they've copied. You should see a PC Suite pop-up window showing that the files are actually being copied.
    OR
    4. Don't use PC Suite

  • Is there any difference in importing movies to iMovie direct from memory card or first importing the movie to the hard drive?

Is there any difference in method:
    1) importing movies directly from memory card (class 10) to iMovie
    2) copying the content of the memory card to my hard drive and from there I import it to iMovie
I mean, is there any quality issues? The latter method is really much faster.

    No.
The copy of the card is a 'bit-identical clone' - no difference to the 'original'.
Plus a superb method to back-up originals....
I copy all my original recordings first onto some hard-drive - SDcards are much to 'fragile' in my experience....

  • Why won't LR read my memory card properly and import the photographs which are clearly there on it?

I'm attempting to transfer my photographs from a large wedding shoot off of my Canon Mark 2 5D and onto Lightroom, the way I always do.  Today, after transfering one memory cards images without a glitch, there seems to be a problem reading images for my 2nd memory card's contents to be transfered to LightRoom.  Although the images come up as thumbnails initially, when I am starting the Import process, when I proceed, LR tells me "No Photos or videos were found to import."
I have restarted both camera and LR multiple times but it does this same thing every time.  Also, it says "Preparing to Import" at this stage of the game, but nothing ever happens.  How can I fix this issue?  Super important work, this needs to happen soon,
    Thank you.

This sounds to me like a hardware problem.
It could be a bad card reader or USB cable, bad USB port, bad camera card, or maybe a bad hard disk on your computer.
If you have a different hardware way to hook up your camera card to your computer, I would give that a try.

  • E61 New Memory Card Files

    Hi,
I have just bought a new 1Gb memory card for my E61. This works fine other than I have now lost my Extra programs supplied with the phone (Worldmate, Acrobat etc). I have found that they are on the original card supplied with the phone in hidden directories but I cannot copy them accross to the new card.
I have tried copying both on the phone itself and on my PC with no luck. I get all the other files but it will not transfer the hidden files.
    Any ideas/
    David

Thanks I figured out this after wasting time trying to copy the files. They are spread around the Nokia site though, but now loaded onto phone memory not card now to get rid of the problem.

  • Lightroom only recognizing / importing ~10% of the images on my memory card, but not consistently?

Lightroom is only recognizing some images from my memory card when I import from the camera. The amount of images it recognizes on a given attempt varies (114 one time I plugged in and tried to import, 128 images another time...etc.). It's only seeing about 10% of total number of images on the card, AND the previews of the images it does see aren't working.
Any ideas? This started right after I downloaded the recent updates.
Previously I've had problems with it being slow to recognize the camera when plugged in, but this is a new one. I know the photos are still there (thank goodness) because I can flip through them on my camera.
    Thanks!
    Katie
    Stats:
    I'm on a MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9.4.
    Lightroom 5, Version 5.6 (Build 974614)
    Just downloaded the updates today.
Camera is a Nikon D90, a few years old.
Memory card is a SanDisk 16GB SDHC.
Things I've already tried (that haven't worked):
    Restarting Lightroom
Creating a new catalogue, and importing to that
    Optimizing the existing catalogue
Turning the camera on and off
Trying a new connector cables (USB to mini USB)

    Hi Katie,
When you put the SDCard directly into the MacBook's memory card reader and import from there, do the pictures you expect show up in the previews?
Maybe it's the camera's USB port that is slowly giving up..
    Greetings,
    Simon

  • Lightroom 5.0 fails to automatically open import dialog when memory card inserted

Lightroom 5.0 fails to detect memory card and open import dialog. This has always worked fine in Lightroom 4, 3,and 2.  Same cards, same camera, same iMac using OS X 10.8.4. Manual importing works OK, card is detected just fine.

I have tested Lightroom 4 and Lightroom 5 on Mac OSx 10.9.4 and find no difference in behavior.
If you have correctly set Image Capture to auto-launch Lightroom on insertion of card and you have set Lightroom to launch the Import dialog upon insertion of card, this is expected behavior:
    1. If Lightroom is not open open, inserting a Memory Card will launch Lightroom without opening the Import Dialog
    2. If Lightroom is open already, inserting a Memory Card will open the Import Dialog.
I can find no combination of settings in Lightroom 4 or 5 that allow you to, with Lightroom closed, insert a card and have Lightroom launch and open the Import dialog. I would sure love to see someone produce a screen vid capture of Lightroom 4 opening by itself and launching an import dialog upon card insertion with no user intervention.

  • IPhoto won't read any of my portrait photos, only the landscape ones. They only show up as black portraits and I already erased them off my memory card. Any idea how to retrieve them or fix the problem?

I am using a 16 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SD Card with a Canon EOS 60D camera and my files are saved as .raw on the memory card. I imported all my photos into iPhoto and then clicked the 'delete photos', as I always do after I imported by pictures, but when I went through my pictures I saw some black rectangles. It appears that all my portrait-orientated photos are just black whereas my landscape photos are perfectly fine. My portrait potos did turn up on my camera screen when I checked them through as I took them but now they're gone. Any idea if this is a software problem with iPhoto, an error with my memory card or even my camera? I've experienced this problem a bunch of times and it's really starting to annoy me that I'm losing all my photos.

    What version of iPhoto?
Select one and rotate it. Then rotate it back. Does that make it appear?
A much better work flow is the keep the photos after importing.  Check the success the import, wait for at least one successful backup cycle then use you camera's format command to reformat the card

  • Help with referenced files and importing

This might be more complex than can be addressed here, but I'm struggling with the organization of aperture.
Because I'm not sure I want use aperture forever, and because I occasionally like to use other photo editors, I've opted for a referenced file setup. I typically arrange my pictures into year/month sub folders, with additional folders for special subjects, like my kids. I've been doing this for a long time, it works for me, and I don't want to change.
Problem #1 - avoiding duplicates when I import. When I stick the card in my computer I want to copy just the new files to the directory I specify. Image capture only looks for duplicates in the target directory, which is no help if I'm importing files to "November" from a card that has files that were previously imported to "October." The easiest solution would be to delete the images off of the card after importing, but I can't do that - my wife also wants to copy the pix to her computer and she may not copy for several weeks or months at a time.
I tried using aperture's import feature to copy files directly from my camera's memory card. The import worked, but when I tried to locate the files on disk, aperture told me there were no referenced files. Any idea where they are?
Problem #2 - import. Is there any way to make Aperture watch referenced directories and automatically add new files to the the appropriate project? It's a pain to keep manually importing files.
Problem #3 - Organization. Is there any way to set up aperture so that a project = a physical folder on my drive? I get that Aperture is trying to abstract the physical location of my files, but I don't want them abstracted. Also, why is my aperture primary library 6.2 GB when I do all my work with referenced files? Where are my edited files stored? Are these in the primary library? Where are the files from my photostreams (from my phone) stored?
Would any or all of these issues be resolved by moving to a managed file set up?
Finally, if I can't get Aperture working the way I need it, any insight into how I'd use it as an external editor to something like Picasa? I really like the aperture editing tools - that's why I bought it. But the workflow is just killing me.
Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is not as complex as you are making it.  Aperture is not per se an editor.  It is for storing and organizing, and quickly decoding RAW images.  It is a pretty good editor, but it has the feature to allow you to specify an External Editor to which you can send images for more complex editing, and back -- all from within Aperture.
You don't want to have your images referenced so you can also edit them with other programs.  That destroys the non destructive design of Aperture.  If you want Referenced images, you mostly want them so they can be on a different hard drive from that used by the Library for keeping track and storing the adjustments, and not so other programs can access them.
You need to read further as to how and why Aperture works the way it does.
