Memory Check At Startup

I'm having problems where if I restart (switch off and back on) the computer takes ages to move from the first screen. I have reason to think that it's checking the memory since sometimes it says "Memory tes" and then when its finished you get the "t" and how much memory I've got in Kb.
If I switch the computer off at the mains for about 5 seconds and switch on, giving residual electrical charge in the memory a moment to dissipate, then the computer starts up normally.
It sounds similar to the problem described as a slow POST, but my computer takes about 30 minutes, not 2.
Any ideas?
Is it possible to copy the screen during startup without having to manually write down what I see?

Timing the system, it actually takes 10 not 30 minutes...
MS-6390 with VIA KT266/A,KT333 chipset
AMD XP2000+
256 Mb x 2 PC133 (@ CL 2.5)
Some HDD 110 Gb
Gainward Pro 660 128 4x Graphics
Some unimportant drives and fans and things
Win XP v5.1 sp1a
Is that enough info?
The problem started a week after I got the computer, and technical support made me try taking out different memory modules and it still happened, so they got me to use the Restore disc and the problem went away for a small while. They said it was a "windows error".

  • Every time I enable the OnBoard USB, in bios, the memory check takes ages.

    yup. Every time I change the OnBoard USB to enabled in BIOS, the startup memory check takes for ages (approximately 5 minutes or so...)(the check jamms for a few numbers before it's finished, it jamms on numbers 104857 and after a little while it goes to the end 1048576 and continues the startup process) and this is really starting to annoy me 'cause I have to use a non-optical mouse and non-wireless keyboard because of that stupid bug or what-so-ever. Is the only choice BIOS update?
    Edit1: the motherboard is MSI KT400, so it's VIA based.

    Please run  Memtest86 after disabling usb.
    And btw a complete list of your hardware including the specs (amps!) of your psu would be helpfull.
    Edit: You've already opend another thread about same topic so I close this one.

  • MSI KT6V won't boot, won't go to bios setup, hangs at memory check.

    Hey guys.
    I made the mistake of buying his motherboard from a mom and pop shop on a Saturday afternoon right before they close (not open today for support :/ ). I've checked the forums for a similar issue and it looks like mine may be unique. Without further delay, here's my problem:
    So I decided to upgrade from an intel p4 2.4 HT to an athlon xp 3000+. I got a new CPU chip and the mentioned KT6V motherboard. I brought over my 1 gb of DDR400 ram from the p4 system. I hooked all of my drives (HDD, cd, dvd) and hardware components into the new system. Everything seemed to be looking good. But, then it gets to the memory check screen. It looks like the ram is okay, but it doesn't seem to want to locate the hard drives. I'm not certain on this though. It says that it found the 1 gb of ram with 3 ms (or is it ns? Not sure) latency.
    Now, I spoke to an IT guy from my work and he said it is probably be the ram. I borrowed some of his DDR266 CL2.5 ram that he used in his wife's computer. The same thing happened...the system just hung.
    Before I go on and give you my complete system specs, here's what the screen looks like when it hangs before it tries to boot. The 'American Megatrends' screen and logo pops up and as I mentioned, the ram info shows up with an 'OK' next to it (which leads me to believe it's not a ram issue, unless the motherboard is lying to me). Below that information, some options pop up for me to hit DEL to go to setup, ESC to skip memory check, and some other options for F10, F11, and F12 (I remember one of the settings was for boot with network). At any rate, none of these options work. If I hit the delete key to go into setup the DEL text is overwritten with 'OK-->' text so it looks like this: 'DEL: Setup' to 'OK-->Setup'. So that tells me that the system hasn't locked up. Now, the system hangs there but if I then try to hit F12 for Network boot, another 'OK-->' shows up next to that option. No matter how long I wait, nothing happens (I let the computer run for 1 hour last night hoping it'd just eventually go into setup with no results).
    I've tried disconnecting my SATA HDD, my IDE HDD, my CD/DVD drives with no results. I've tried switching memory sticks, trying only one stick (I had 2x 512mb DDR400 ram and 2x 256mb DDR266 ram) to see if maybe the motherboard just doesn't like 2 sticks of ram. Again, nothing. So, I'm pretty much out of ideas.
    Here are my system specifications:
    CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (not sure of FSB, it's not on my receipt...came installed on my mobo)
    RAM: 2x 512 mb DDR400 CL3.0 and 2x 256 mb DDR266 CL2.5 (testing purposes)
    Videocard: Nvidia geforce 6600 GT 128 mb AGP
    HDD1: Seagate Barracuda ST3160023AS 160GB Hard Drive (Serial ATA-150, 7200 RPM, 8MB)
    HDD2: Western Digital IDE 100GB
    CD drive1: Generic DVD-Rom drive
    CD drive2: Generic DVD-RW drive
    Let me also note that the guys at the shop made sure to take 30 minutes to update my motherboard's bios and test everything out (with THEIR components, not my old system's guts). So apparently everything works, but the motherboard doesn't seem to like some of my hardware. If anyone can shed some light on this subject, I'd greatly appreciate it! Otherwise I guess I'll just have to wait until next week to get it figured out.
    If you need anymore information that I may have left out, please ask!

    Well, Blazing Storm, I took your advice. Everything is finally setup and working on my new computer now and seems to be working great...BUT, in 3d games, after an hour or two of playing, my computer might randomly lockup and restart. So, I'm assuming it's either my ram being strange or the power supply. My bet's on the 2nd one, especially after what you guys are saying.
    So I ended up buying this:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/PoWork-550W-Max-ATX-Power-Supply-w-SATA-Cable-Fast-Ship_W0QQitemZ6799810302QQcategoryZ3670QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
    It has some pretty good looking power settings as you guys have suggested, so I decided to get it. Hopefully this'll solve the crashing problems I've been having! Thanks again guys.

  • How do I disable the Plugin check at startup in 17.0.2 esr?

    In testing the latest 17.0.2esr I keep getting the plugin check at startup. Even logged in as a Standard user with no Admin rights I still get this page which makes no sense since Standard users do not have permissions to install software. This is supposed to be the Enterprise version of Firefox which in my mind means that all updates and controls are left to the dicretion of an Administrator and not an end user. Is this a bug in ESR? How do I eliminate this?

    This can happen if there are plugins installed that are block-listed by Mozilla.

  • HT1338 My Macbook Pro 13" says that I have no more memory in my startup disk. I've tried clearing files and folders and deleting applications but it still says that I have low memory. How do I fix it?

    My MacBook Pro 13" says that I have no more memory in my startup disk. I have tried deleting applications, files, folders, and it still says I have low memory. What is taking up all that space?

    First -- do the target disk backup.  Somehow get a backup.
    You might try booting to Single user mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1492 and removing the files in the command line.  When you put files in the trash, the space is still used up until the trash is emptied.
    using rm command removes it totally.  Just be very careful because you remove the wrong file, and you have to relad the system

    Is there an automate-able way to do a memory check within WinPE x64?  All the tools I see out there are either 32-bit (and consequently won't run in WinPE).  I'm using WinPE from the Win7 OPK, amd64 architecture.

    The only x64 native tool that I'm aware of would be
    Prime95 and then download the 64-bit client. While this is not per-se a memory diagnostic tool, when it's executed as a torture test you can use that mode to stress a system.
    Other than that I don't know any solution for a native x64 app for WindowsPE.

    Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
    Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
    Restart your Mac after freeing up disk space then check Stoage again.
    Another way to view avialable space:
    Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click Get Info.
    In the Get Info panel you'll see:  Available & Capacity
    Again, make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Disabling memory check on MS 6176 = MS 6209

    Hello all,
    I know this is a old MB but I like it !
    Is there a way to disable (for always) the memory checking at power up ?
    Can't find an option for it in the bios (11/16/2000-i810-W83627HF)
    I know you can do it by hitting ESC.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    My notebook (probook 6570b) with windows 7 gives randomly blue screens.
    Because it's very random I've  thought that the problem is the memory in my laptop.
    So I checked my memory with Uefi memory check. That routine give a fault-id

    Does anyone knows what the fault-id means?

  • Looping memory check

    Hi. I've got a MS-6163 version 1 motherboard. Have just upgraded the BIOS (Award) from version 2.1 to 2.7. Now though, on booting up, the memory check just loops repeatedly. Hitting escape allows me to continue. It's got 1 stick of 256mb in there.

    On older boards it's usually a setting called "quick power on self test" (set it to enabled)

  • New build P7N SLI-FI stuck on Memory Check

    I have a new build with the following components:
    Case: Aluminus ULTRA
    Mobo: MSI P7N SLI-FI
    CPU: Intel E8400, 3ghz LGA775, 1333 fsb, Core 2 Duo
    PSU: Rosewill Extreme RX950-s-b, 80 Plus
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda, 7200 SATAII
    Memory: 4 X CM2X1024-6400C4 (DDR2 800 1gb sticks)
    Video Card: NVidia GeForce 9500 GT
    Everything is plugged in according to the directions with the mobo, I connected the 24 pin power, and the 8 pin power for the CPU.  Everything is brand new, I carefully seated the CPU and cooler.
    The thing gets as far as the memory check and stalls.. nothing more. At one point the message concerning the DEL or F11 key to go to BIOS or Boot came up but pressing either did nothing.
    I remove the mobo from the chassis and place it on a non conductive surface.. no luck. Same result.
    I remove all memory sticks but one ... still same result.
    This is extremely frustrating.. any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Thanks for your reply.
    Sorry for the crack about the Intel board...just frustrated.
    So the company that I bought the board from (local company) actually loaned me a CPU that worked fine (Pentium 4), so I could flash the BIOS.  I was pleasantly surprised. There is some definite value to buying from your local shop, I never shopped there before.. but I am glad I did this time... they are very trusting people.
    Now my next problem;  I do not have a license for Windows (nor do I have any Windows media laying around).  I am a Linux user.
    I have OpenSuse 10.3 up and running on this machine now and it is running great. I would however like to use my new processor so I need to flash to 7380 ver. 2.1.
    Is there any utility for flashing the BIOS under Linux?
    Thanks again,
    Joe

  • Video Memory Check : FAILED

    Hello ,colleagues! I have strange issue. When I started check of whole system Using HP Pc Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, (F2 on start, system diagnostics from USB drive with UEFI tool installed) I receive Error on Video RAM test: Video Memory Check : FAILEDFAILURE ID:QFVU0F-7M07MH-XD6WXA-Q2D603 There is no any troubles found by other software - I see no any errors in Windows logs, no application crashes, etc. Should I perform some actions to be sure that this issue will not affect my system and data? Thank you!

    This is a systemboard video solution issue. Does your notebook have a discrete video adapter or only the onboard video solution ( via the CPU or APU, as appropriate to the CPU\chipset type)?   I highly recommend contacting HP to arrange for warranty service. Use the contact options on the following URL.http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/psi/home?sp4ts.oid=5405360&ac.admitted=1435312773024.876444892.492883150#helpFromHp   It is highly recommended that you copy all important data to an external storage device before sending in to a service center. That will avoid any data loss.

  • SD memory is always checked at startup

    I recently bought a Treo 700wx.  If I leave the phone powered off for a few hours then go back to it, once i turn it on, I get a message that tells me a "storage card was inserted.  Do you want to search it for audio and video files?"
    How can I stop this nuiciance from occurring?
    Thanks!

    Do you have an SD card in the Treo?
    Try a 10 second soft reset by taking out the battery for at least 10 seconds. This allows the device to power off completely, like a shutdown on a PC.
    For reference purposes, click on the following link for the support page for your device on the kb.palm.com webpage.

  • How to set kernel parameter max-shm-memory automatically at startup

    Hi,
    We have a 11.1.0.7 Database on Solaris Sparc 10 64-bit server. We have settings of max-shm-memory as below;
    -bash-3.00# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project default
    project: 3: default
    NAME    PRIVILEGE       VALUE    FLAG   ACTION                       RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
            privileged      50.0GB      -   deny                                 -
            system          16.0EB    max   deny                                 -
    -bash-3.00# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project system
    project: 0: system
    NAME    PRIVILEGE       VALUE    FLAG   ACTION                       RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
            privileged      50.0GB      -   deny                                 -
            system          16.0EB    max   deny                                 -
    Whenever we restart the db the second one is lost;
    bash-3.00$ prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project default
    project: 3: default
    NAME    PRIVILEGE       VALUE    FLAG   ACTION                       RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
            privileged      50.0GB      -   deny                                 -
            system          16.0EB    max   deny                                 -
    bash-3.00$ prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project system
    prctl: system: No controllable process found in task, project, or zone.
    So our sys admin has to configure them again whenever we restart our db. How could I do this automatically at startup without counfiguring again from command prompt?
    Thanks,
    Hatice

    Ok it is clear now. I have one more question.  When I check system I get below error;
    # prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project system
    prctl: system: No controllable process found in task, project, or zone.
    Document says; The reason for the message reported above is because there is no active process(es) belong to the project.
    But it is impossible for us because according to our project settings its for root user;
    bash-3.00$ cat /etc/project
    system:0::root::project.max-shm-memory=(priv,53687091200,deny)
    user.root:1::::
    noproject:2::::
    default:3::oracle::project.max-shm-memory=(priv,53687091200,deny)
    group.staff:10::::
    oracle:100::::project.max-shm-memory=(priv,53687091200,deny)
    Is it because I check with oracle user and I don't have sufficient privileges or there is something wrong with it?
    Thanks.
