Memory clean: 6,48gb in total but my MBP actually has 8gb

Hi,
I keep track of my memory because i attempt to understand why my system eats it like it's nothing. Now, i have the app Memory Clean and it shows the following after a cleanup:
What does it mean? why do i have 6,49gb according to the system?

1gb memory for a game isnt that much. Which means my mac will be worthless if i play a more demanding game for example.
No, because with any modern memory management system, RAM will be dynamically allocated so that the apps that need it will get it as long as you have a decent amount installed. With 8GB installed, you have a decent amount so you should not worry.
With Mavericks, memory management is even more sophisticated due to the RAM compression feature. This is causing many veteran Mac users to rethink what "low RAM" means. You cannot simply look at the amounts and say "it's using too much" or "there isn't enough RAM" because you don't really understand that from looking at the numbers. Reading RAM levels does not work like reading a battery meter or a measuring cup.
With modern RAM management, the most inefficient state is a lot of free RAM, because RAM is so valuable for speeding up things through caching that if apps/OS use little RAM and leave mostly free RAM in a modern OS, they are probably badly programmed from a performance point of view and they are actually wasting RAM if they are not putting it to good use. Also, they are not hogging RAM if they will allow the OS to reallocate if another app starts to need it more.
That is why so many people in this thread are telling you Memory Clean is not worth using. You are trying to second-guess automatic RAM management and you're not going to do it as well as the system can.

  • MBP App Memory Clean showing a total of only 3.38GB RAM, although my MAC should have a total of 4?

    Hello all,
    Perhaps a question more for the tech-experts (I'm not one ) :
I have been running the (well-known) App Memory Clean for a while, and have been quite satisfied with its "Auto-Clean" function, as it saves me up on the Disk swapping.
However, as I open the App, there are a few options that can be seen:
    Active
    Wired
    Inactive
    Free
    Used
    Total
My MBP Retina (late '13) has a 4GB RAM installed- and yet the "Total" RAM memory that Memory Clean displays is a mere 3.41 GB and fluctuating. I have checked Activity Monitor as well as About this Mac>More Info>System Report> Memory, showing me that all slots are "OK".
Is this an app "bug"? If so, that would be relieving, but nonetheless brings me to a more deep-rooted question:
Is constantly "cleaning" the RAM bad for it and for the MBP's performance?
(I have heard that Memory Clean runs by "dumping disk cache"- which is supposedly bad for system performance...?)

I also have your concerns. I have a first gen rMBP with 16 GB of RAM and I often see every bit of RAM being used!
So far I’ve been too chicken to upgrade my mid ’11 MBA since it only has 4 GB. I understand Mavericks utilizes RAM differently, but I’m still skeptical. Mavericks hasn’t been as stable as most initial releases so I’m waiting until 10.9 doesn’t seem so much like a beta.
I’d like to see a good explanation of Mavericks memory management system vs prior versions of the OS. Apple’s quick explanation was ok but far from comprehensive.
BTW, I switched to FreeMemory when I upgraded to Mavericks. It has all the same functions as Memory Clean but has the added benefit of having a menu bar icon with the familiar pie chart that Activity Monitor once had for a dock icon but lost in the upgrade.
For now I'll disable the auto clean feature and see how the system behaves, but I'll keep it installed just for it's monitoring capabilities.

  • Hi, i have a macbook air, but i want to upgrade to the new model. I want to sell my existing air, but can i wipe the memory clean of all existing content to sell it, but still update my new pc when it arrives?

Hi, i have an Air but want to upgrade to the new model. How do i wipe the memory clean of my existing Air so i can sell it, and ensure when i get my new PC it automatically assumes the existing settings? Any help appreciated...

First of all, as a rule you should have two backups before you do anything else. (most don't, and it's up to you).
I would have one backup done as a Time Machine backup on an external disk, which you will use to import all settings, data and apps to your new MBA via Setup Assistant on your very first boot of the new machine.
Second, I would have prepared, a bootable backup done via Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper on a second external disk. This you can use for unforseen problems that might be evident on the Time Machine backup (hey it happens).
After you have these two items in preparation, then use the original system disk or flash drive to reformat and reinstall the original operating system to the old machine, cleanly. After that, it is ready for sale. If the unit is not an SSD equipped MBA, you can perform a secure wiping of the disk when you perform the reformatting.
To reiterate.... You need a good Time Machine Backup as a source for you setting up the new Mac with Setup Assistant.

  • Memory cleaning help

hi i just whant to ask should i use memory cleaning and how many time a week and is clearing your event log good because it helps to make my blackberry faster

memory cleaning does not do what most think it does it acts only on empty memory areas wiping them over and over again to get them totally clean it does not function like a PC hard drive defrag for most people memory cleaning slows their system down rather than provide any benifit clearing event logs can be good but how often cannot be stated as "normal" since "normal" depends on the unique circumstances of the individual you must experiement with how frequent works best for you good luck

  • BlackBerry Curve Memory Clean Up Problem

     Dear Blackberry Community,
Recently I bought Blackberry curve in USA - this is a BlackBerry Curve 8520 Smartphone. I live in Switzerland. At the beginning I was able to operate the phone without problems but suddenly, at some point, without any obvious reason I got message "memory clean up". Now, this is all my phone does. It is "cleaning up" the memory. That means screen of the phone is blank and there is only one message on it: "memory clean up" with a small clock. Even when I leave the phone turned on for hrs. nothing happens. Once I left the phone turned on for entire night and next morning I got the same message and the phone with overheated battery.
Do you know any solutions for this problem? I would be very thankful for any advice.

So you have tried a battery pull reset I assume?
If you have not, do so.
If you have, I would recommend plugging into your computer and doing a backup to ensure your data is saved.
Now, what exactly were you doing when this came up? do you recall if you had enabled the auto-cleanup?

I've just purchased a new 2014 15" MacBookPro to replace my much missed 17" MBP. I got the works: OS 10.9.4, 2.8GHz Intel i7, 16GB memory and a 1 TB SSD, but despite the expense, I still don't have a computer that works...
The problem is that every time I try to open any program from Office 2011, I immediately get the following window, for example for Word: "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This happens each and every time I try to open Word or other Office 2011 component.
Thinking it might be a licensing issue, I purchased and downloaded a new copy of Office 2011 from Amazon and installed it on my new MBP. Same issue once again.
I tried to remove all copies of Office 2011 from the MBP, but the instructions provided by Microsoft required about three page and seventeen steps and the page was somehow corrupted and would not print in its entirety, nor would it e-mail as anything other than a link to the corrupted page. Not trusting my memory, I decided not to try this without adult supervision.
I used Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions, as described on an existing thread regarding the same problem, but to no avail.
I removed and later replaced the "Microsoft User Data" folder from the Documents folder, but that was no help.
I have copied the short version of the "Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0," below, for those of you with a deeper knowledge of the internal workings, or non-workings of things Mac when crossed with things MS.

Surely others have encountered and solved this same problem, and I'm hoping they can help me do the same. I don't know if this is a known issue or simply a matter of my having bumbled naively through a process far more complex than I was led to believe.

  • Main Memory Cleaning Policy (Algorithm)

    Respected Sir/Madam,
I am studying the memory management concepts of Microsoft Windows Operating System.
I need to know about the Main Memory Cleaning Policies or algorithms of latest Operating systems of Microsoft (Windows 7 and 8) in details.
What is the threshold level required for the page replacement after remaining the minimum page frames available in main memory ?
What is the Architecture of the Virtual memory management system of these operating systems?
    It is Urgent.
Please send me the answers of these questions.
I shall be very thankful to you for this.

    Hi ,
Thanks for the response. Basically I first opened parent panel which is of type Window. It included menu , toolbar etc. For menu/toolbar events it opens child windows which gets displayed in main window in the form of tabs. This is my use case.
I tried the suggested profiler Redgate Ants profiler. Its very good and informative! I ran the profiler
got the following output. Though I closed the child window it seems objects are still there in memory . No where I left out string , byte array objects in my code.
Not sure why Runtimemethodinfo , hastable bucket are there in memory. I even tried the workaround mentioned at here.
I thought panel resources might have not been freed up and in my code I am clearing them as well. Still did not see much improvement. Any additional things do I need to check? Please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Brahmaji.

  • Not enough memory to install more here maps (but I...

I have an annoying issue with my new Lumia 925. I extra bought the 32gb version to have plenty enough space for all the maps. (I stored the whole world on "Nokia Karten" on my old symbian N8)
But now when I want to install more Maps it tells me that I do need 11.240MB (so more then 11GB!) of free space. even If I only want to add a small map of 40MB
Noticable is that indeed i already have downloaded approx. 11GB of maps on my lumia 925.
So far it looks like that the programm wants to have the same amount of memory as free space on the device as the amount of already installed maps is. ???
    How to avoid that ?
But that must be a mistake as my Symbian N8 had no such limitations. There on the symbian system however there was a setting possible to tell the phone how much storage of the card it is allowed to consume to store maps. E.g. you could do a setting that 90% of teh capacity of the card (or the internal memory by the way) can be used for the maps.
I found no similar switch in here Maps on the Lumia ???
So does anybody know how I can use my approx 11GB of free memory on my Lumia 925 to store further cards. ?

Well of course a 64GB SD would be solution for everything. Unfortunately not possible.
I clearly thought about the Pro and Cons of the Lumia 925.
Negative indeed is that the 32GB version is the maximum. On the other hand I calculated before the purchase if 32gb will be sufficient. And I came to conclusion that 32GB is sufficient compared my memory demands on symbian Nokia N8.
But I never thought about an issue like that for maps installed on the system there is the same amount of free memory needed to install more maps.
Is there a solution to this Bug ? The Nokia Support so far (tried it only in Germany) is a bit helpless
PS. Hopefully the Update function will still work when afterwards I do use the "free" memory for other data. Deleting and Reinstalling is not an option because I found no way like previously on the N8 for with the Nokia Suite to download everything overnight automatically. In the Lumia I have to manually select every map on its own.
Nevermind: The Look and Fell of the Lumia & Windows Phone is much better then my Symbian N8 (and faster, way faster). But it is really more complicated and has Limitations Symbian did not have had.

    Hi!
So you believe you get the error with Memory Cleaner active -- have you run controlled tests to validate this? And is the error gone if you run your test with Memory Cleaner inactive?
Memory Cleaner is belived by most to be not necessary. It is a resource and performance drag on the device for benefits that only fit people with very very high security requirements. Here is a KB that discusses what it does.
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB03862&slic...
The most common misconception about Memory Cleaner is that it performs a defrag of the App Memory and clears out memory leaks and such, returning the BB to a good functioning state. This is incorrect. The best way to accomplish that remains the batt-pop reboot.
    Hope that helps!

    It is occupied by "Other"
