Memory Clogged...

i have a dual 2.7 ghz G5 with 4 gigs of memory and lately i've noticed that if i'm running multiple applications, especially some processor heavy ones, like toast or dvd2one, that any other application i try to use, even safari or iChat, takes a while to load. even trying to open up the machd can be a rigorous process.
after zapping the pram didn't work, i finally went into the activity monitor and saw that even tho i was only running toast and safari, i only had around 40 megs of free memory. a phone call to tech support taught me how to reset the nvram, and that seemed to clear up the used memory for a while, until it all got clogged up again and my system started heavily lagging. another call to apple and we emptied all the caches and once again it seemed to be fine.
so i needed to burn a dvd and decided to keep the activity monitor open. as i burned in toast, the further the burn process completed, the more memory it ate up, until i only had around 40 megs free again, but toast seemed to free up all that used memory when i quit. after that, i used dvdremaster to do a little compression, and it also ate up all my memory again, but this time, after i quit, it didn't release all that memory.
so what i'm wondering is why are these programs using up all my free memory and why is it not always being released when they're done with it? obviously having to constantly reboot to free up memory isn't convenient. the system is just really laggy at times. is there anything i can do...would totally reinstalling the OS fix anything?

Memory usage in Activity Monitor is explained here
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
and should not be the problem with 4 gigs...
You could try checking how full the boot drive is; some guidance here
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
although some experts recommend keeping the boot drive not much above 50% to keep the system and applications in the faster, outer regions of the disc.
An erase and install may free up a bit of disc space; may speed things up; is touched on here

  • HT1386 Memory clogged by Apps

    I am synching my iPad and suddenly have 14 GB of apps.  Even when I set apps not to synch I have the same and it is clogging up my memory.  Any idea what is going on?

    Thanks.  I have tried turning off all apps synch.  Have now tried turning off cloud back up.  That seems like it might be working (currently synching and storage for apps reduce to less than 0.5 GB (from 14GB) but I am not sure why.

  • Help, cant start Laptop (memory clogged?)

    Hi. Can anyone please help. I have a G4 laptop. Was using it when had a warning about there not being enough space in start up memory and to shut down applications. I quit internet and started sorting unwanted files into trash. Then hit delete trash. Left room for a cuppa, when I came back the screen was just blue.
    Turned computer off, let it sit a minute and have turned it back on and it just stays in the booting up phase (apple logo & small wheel spinning round) Tried turning it on and off a few times but continually stuck in booting up phase.
    What can I do?

    [Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
    Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
    There's also Single User Mode:

  • Macbookpro, memory clogs up with an occasional sudden shutdown

    Hello,
    I have some issues with my mid 2010 macbookpro. After a restart, the memory fills up very quickly, programs load slow, internet runs slow,...
    I have tried reading various other discussions, I have removed some extensions that were mentioned (gophoto.it, yontoo and torrent handler), but the problem seems not that much better. I have run a diagnostic that was mentioned in other discussions, should I run etrecheck as well?
    It seems that sophos and parallels are listed a lot in the diagnostic, sophos is still installed, but parallels is not anymore, I don't know if I should delete more things that seem to be related to parallels?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kamiel

    Activity Monitor - Mavericks
    Activity Monitor in Mavericks has significant changes
    Quit Chrome. Several people had had problems with it hogging memory.

  • Release memory from Swing components

    Ive experiencing memory leak when using swing components in a custom node object.
    When I set the node to null or just delete it from my group node the garbage collector kicks in but when I add a swing component the memory clogs up quickly.
    Ive been using the code below for adding a swing component:
    insert textField = SwingTextField {
    columns: 20
    borderless: false;
    width: beginBalk - 5;
    height: 30;
    enabled:false;
    text: "Sample text";
    editable: false;
    } into grp.content;
    grp is a common Group node and other component are added aswell.
    The complete group node is added to another group which if I want to refresh I use:
    delete grp from rootGrp.content;
    rootGroup is the other group node that is added to a scene.
    I works fine without the swing components so it has got nothing to do with other objects in the group.
    Hope anyone has the solution for this,

    Hi Hugo,
    I'haven't got the solution but perharps the way for destructing the SwingComp can be different.
    Has I understood the jvm keep object in survival space until it is referenced by the program.
    So If you use
    delete comp for group.contentthe jvm probably keep a reference on the comp object.
    You can try
    delete group.content[idx]instead, then you can adjust jvm garbage collection if the problem persists.

    When I enter it into the search on the Blackberry support web site, I get less than no help. Does anyone know what this error message refers too or can point me to some documentation that might help?
    Thanks!

    Let's ignore the error message for now (I even get a similar message on mine when rebooting, nothing I can do).
    To prevent freezing or lagging/slow response on any BlackBerry, the most important practice you can adopt is to be sure to CLOSE applications when you are finished using them.
    If you just hit the red "end call" key to go back to the home screen the application actually stays open and running in the background. If you do this repeatedly you will have lots of apps open and consequently your memory will get used up. Lack of memory is the biggest reason your BlackBerry slows to a crawl or locks up. If you get into the habit of actually using the menu key to close the applications this will at least slow down this memory-clogging process. You still may have to do a battery pull or use the "Quickpull" app once in a while when things get slow.
    To check what applications are running on your device in the background, press the Menu key then choose Switch Applications. You will see the icons of each application there.
    So now, check your applications running in the background. There are commonly four or five applications that will always be running (Messages, Call Logs/Phone, BlackBerry Messenger, Homescreen, and the Browser; there are other third party applications such as BeeJive, and BlackBerry Alerts which will also run in the background which you cannot close if you want them to operate). Make certain that the browser is NOT on an active webpage (open the browser and choose Menu > Close). Close any other applications that do not need to be running (the camera or a game you were playing or Google Maps).

  • After upgraded to version 5 few things missing..

    Hi,
    I am using blackberry curve 8520.. I have been using this for almost a year already. I noticed, there are few things missing and some problems occurred when I upgraded to version 5. Eg. Memopad, No column in option for alarm tones, my BB getting slower during browsing, everytime I try to connect to wi-fi, it will be intermittent or not connected.
    For unable to connect to wifi, I suspected it is browser issue but then I set to default setting it is still the same.
    Can somebody help me to rectify this please?
    Tq.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Memopad: 1. On your homescreen, press the Menu key > SHOW ALL, so that SHOW ALL is checked.
    2. Look in EACH folder on your device... Applications, Instant Messengers, Downloads, etc.
    If you still don't see it, look at Options > Advanced > Applications. Do you see it listed there?
    If still can't be found, read this link.
    Alarms tones? Can you elaborate?
    Slow or lagging device, please see below.
    i don't know about your WiFi issue, you would also need to elaborate your problem.

  • Curve 8520. Small clock icon appearing and very slow running

    My curve is operating really slowly and when I try to open or send a text or open a mail, I get a very small clock icon appear. After about 20 secs, the text or mail opens. Not able to send any e mails either. Thought too many stored mails may be the problem but device won't now allow me to delete. Battery also running low after just a few hours,even after fully charging.

    1. Do a reboot on the device:  With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot.
    2. To prevent freezing or lagging/slow response on any BlackBerry, the most important practice you can adopt is to be sure to CLOSE applications when you are finished using them.

  • New phone with a problem!

    I just recently purchased my first Black Berry, the curve 8530. Sometimes when I'm hanging up from a call it takes a while for my screen to return to normal. There are times when I can only see the top part of my screen (sometimes this can last for about a min). Because this is a new phone and still covered under warranty, should I return it to the store and get a new one?

  • JSwing frames dissappear on cascade view

    I have a Swing based desktop application. When I open around 13-14 frames with huge data in my application and try to arrange them in cascade mode, some of the frames disappear.
    Can anyone help with a workaround for this?
    Does this has to do with the heap size I set in the server where the application is involved or can this be solved directly ?

    Hello,
    How do you "arrange them in cascade mode"?
    Do you use an OS' built-in feature? or do you programmatically set the frames' location and dimension?
    As far as your second question goes, if you mean you have a server application (running in one JVM) and a client application (running in another JVM), then the heap setting of the server JVM has no impact on the Swing framework running of the client app.
    Now, there may be a bug in your client or server application code, that deals badly with memory clogging or server's unresponsiveness, but that is pure speculation.
    You should try to write an SSCCE (one class, and no server app involved) demonstrating the "arrange them in cascade mode" feature. If you don't find the solution this way, at leats post the SSCCE code here.
    Good luck,
        J.

  • Black Clock Icon showing up constantly

    I'm a relatively new Smartphone user and am still getting used to my 8530 Curve.  Over the last couple of days whenever I go to do anything on my phone (check facebook, check email, switch to another application, etc) I get this little black clock in the middle of my screen and it's like everything freezes for a few seconds.
    What is this and what does it mean?  Honestly it's kind of annoying so I hope someone can explain it to me.
    Thanks!

  • Does all video on Apple TV sync back to my MacBook Pro?

    I am considering getting an apple TV because I want to purchase TV shows and movies. I have always been reluctant to buy shows and movies because the amount of memory that video chews up. Will all the video that I purchase remain on the Apple TV without clogging my MacBook up? Is there some kind of option I can choose to only selectively sync things back to my computer?
    I do not want my lap top's memory clogged up. Will Apple TV solve this problem?
    Thanks for the advice.

    Yes, the ATV will sync everything back to your computer. It's not intended as either primary storage or back up. Think of it as a giant iPod. Your best bet is to get an external hard drive for your iTunes library. I know it's been years since i could keep my iTunes library on my computer's internal drive.
    Best of luck.
