Memory discrepancy between iPod and iTunes

I just bought a new 30GB iPod today. My iTunes library says that I have 9.45GB used, but when I loaded the music onto the new iPod it says I've used 9.54GB - not 9.45GB. Why the discrepancy and how do I fix that?

Hi!
My name is Florian and I know, what´s youre problem...
With Windows XP, I think you have NTFS on your HDD.
When you format the iPod for Windows (the iPod's operating system can't have other) you have only FAT on your iPod.
Short intro in file systems:
your HDD is a circle. in the middle of the disc (lowest radius ) there is saved, where the files are on your HDD. Your HDD is composed out of litlle "squaers" (width is very, very little). and this squares have a definite bigness. in NTFS the bigness is just littler than in FAT. So if you have a part of a file (this squares are very very little capacity) you have a part of a file is littler than a sqare, this capacity is wasted.
==> bigger sqares in FAT => more waste.
Hope could help you. For more infos, visit wikipedia
(teh operating system of iPod (with games,...) is already abstracted from the 30 GB (the 30GB are not 30GB, only 27,89...) because of the management system of the file-system (FAT, NTFS,...))

  • Transfer between iPod and iTunes - mission impossible !

I recently got iPod Touch (latest model with latest iOS) - just to use it in my car. I simply wanted to add and remove few songs. In a normal world, there would be just 2 columns (ipod/computer and simple managing both parts within files and folders management - let us be sincere, can anything be more natural and straightforward ? Sure not). But Apple wants it to make super complicated and highly frustrating. OK, what to do,
Since I already have a different computer (newer version of MBP Retina, with the latest OSX) , I needed to get the iPod content to the iTunes on the new computer somehow. This is impossible as such - since iTunes keep telling that if I want to associate this iPod with this iTunes library , I have to erase the iPod (this is something I really don't want). I try "full backup" - as offered by iTunes ... I do it few times, the process starts, but always lasts quite short (considering 1700 songs with 24 GB on my iPod). The result is - nothing is backuped to this computer ... very nice ...
In further search, I discover some third party apps, that supposedly could help with this terrible process. I bought AnyTrans and started transferring the content to iTunes. in 9 hours, it was just 4 GB transferred ... (overnight) ... obviously not the way ... On another advice , I bought iExplorer, it should be supposedly better. I tried to transfer the iPod content to iTunes ("start automatic transfer). I tried it 5 times. As a result, the app always froze and for quit was the only solution. NIce. Then I got an advice that it is good not to transfer to iTunes but just to some folder on a computer. That finally worked. Good
Then I added all these songs to iTunes Library (finally some first result after many hours of effort). Then I agreed that this iPod can be associated with this iTunes Library (that already contained those 1700 songs) and let it synced with this iPod.  After some time the iPod was indeed erased. No music in it any more. As much as I tried again and again to sync it with iTunes Library, the process went in three short steps and finished. The result - no music on iPod, whatever I do ... Full music Library in iTunes on MBP
What shall I say and still keep my expressions decent ? (difficult) This iTunes and this system of working with files on iPod or iPhones is for me the most stupid invention ever. How could someone ever create such a terrible nonsense that make simple things impossible and highly frustrating ? Instead of simple file transfer between devices ... I have no words for that ... It is also possible that it is me who is stupid, in that case, please let me know how can I transfer songs from iPod to iTunes and how can I how some songs on iPod (that are already in iTunes Library). Not to waste computer space by having iPod library copied there, is another thing, but let us not go to details now

Yes, all played in iTunes in the computer, right boxes checked (see the printscreens) ...  In the end , I restored to restarting iPod and MBP. After that it started working (synchronisation). But only up to some extent. In iTunes Library I have about 1700 tracks, but only 660 were transferred to iPod. Now I made: "add to library" - adding to library all the song I already have in Library: and the iTunes started working hard to add the rest in the Library (but they were already there ...)
So finally I spend nice whole day to add/remove songs in my iPod ...
Another thing is - when in iTunes Library I want to add/change genre to some songs, the process takes so long, it is like each song is freshly copied just to add the tag "classical" etc to each ... I thought I have the "fastest Mac ever" ... Waiting so long for such trivial process is unbelievable ... (with rainbow circle making a nice decoration now and then)

  • How to connect ratings between iPod and iTunes

Hey I just got an iPod and I want the ratings I set on the pod to update onto my computer. When I connect the iPod I can see the songs on the iPod have the ratings I set when I was using the iPod, but the original songs on the computer aren't updated.
    Any advice?
Or do the ratings only flow one way? Thanks a lot guys,
    Josh

It works for me; i.e. when I set ratings on the iPod, and then I sync the iPod, the ratings in the iTunes Library change to what I set on the iPod.
Maybe it depends on the iPod model?

  • Has anyone experienced memory discrepancies between iPhone and iTunes?

    Hello,
After upgrading my iPhone 3GS to 5.1, the iTunes sync program was reporting memory shortage of 456MB and would not sync. The iPhone itself reports 5.1 gig available, but the iTune software is reporting short 456MB of memory to be able to sync...what would be the fix for this condition?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    GerryLP

I checked again last night, and now iTunes matched the phone settings, saying zero space was available. I had nearly 20 gigs of "Other" data :/
So I erased all settings/data on the iPhone and restored from an iCloud backup from last week, and now everything seems fine, with over 15 GB of available space.

  • Checking consistancy between iPod and iTunes library

Is there a way to tell which files are missing from an iPod that are in the iTunes library? My library on my computer says 2948, and for my iPod it says 2947. I was hoping maybe there was some program that would tell you rather than having to go through every file and check. Thanks.

I don't think there is any programs like this. You can search Google. To make sure you are getting all of your songs from iTunes onto your iPod follow these instructions:
    1. Go to all of your songs(Library)
    2. Click on your first song on the list and press and hold Shift
    3. Go to the last song on the list. Click on it and let go of Shift.
    4. Then all of your songs are highlighted. Right click on any song and click on "Uncheck Selection". Now all of your songs are unchecked.
    5. Now right click again on any song and click on "Check Selection". Now every single song is checked.
    6. Now update your iPod again and everything from your iTunes library should transfer correctly onto your iPod.
I have tried this solution and it has worked for me. I personaly created these instructions so I helped you out

I just purchased a 120gb iPod classic 6th generation from a friend. I have the latest iTunes installed and the software on the iPod is also current. My problem is whenever I'm syncing the iPod and iTunes freezes between the 250- 300th song... I have to manually reset the iPod for the iTunes to run correctly, but then my music isn't added and iTunes tells me I have to restore the iPod... I've done this numerous times only to no avail... Someone please help!!!

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • Reloading ipod and itunes on a new computer

I am trying to reload ipod and itunes on a new computer I recently bought. Because of disc management issues, I had these on an external drive (assigned the letter "F") on my old system. The letter "F" is assigned to a disc drive on my new computer. Every time I try to load ipod or itunes, the installer sequence tells me there is no available memory on drive F of the new machine (true enough), but will not let me re assign to a new drive.
suggestions on how to resolve this?
    many thanks. Bill

  • TS4062 prevent syncing between ipod and iphone

I  don't want my contact list to sync between my iphone and my daughter's ipod touch.  I checked the "don't synch automatically" option, but this don't seem to correct the problem.  Any ideas anyone?

As long as you sync before you start to listen then the iPod and iTunes will always start playback from the same point.

  • My ipod and itunes is no longer showing the music videos i purchased..

    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • HT203175 My Ipod and Itunes on my computer are both working fine except on my Ipod when I try to play music it will not allow me to play any music

Hello there everyone,   my Ipod and Itunes on my computer are working fine,  but my Ipod is frozen,  I can do anything else on it except I cannot play
music on it  or  play music from a dock on it   ,    please let me know what I can do ,   thank you  !

Hi all. Never had any problems with iTunes over the past 6 or 7 years but suddenly (in last week or two) I can't play any songs with 10.6.1. I can select songs and get the speaker symbol, but the song does not play and the indicator stays at 0, while the play button is replaced by the pause button, as it normally does when a song is playing. I am using a one year old PC with Windows 7 and have had no other issues. Tried starting iTunes in safe mode...same result.Thoughts? Thanks.

  • IPod and iTunes Need Couples' Counseling?

OK, I've been having some really weird problems with connecting my new 4th gen iPod touch to my Windows Vista PC and getting them to recognize each other properly. I plug my iPod into my computer's USB port with the iPod USB cable, expecting my computer to recognize the iPod like it used to with my old one, and automatically bring up iTunes. But to my surprise, no such luck. The computer and the iPod don't connect properly, I guess. The weird thing is, if I open iTunes manually, the program will freeze, I will force-quit it through the task manager, and then if I disconnect and reconnect the iPod, the computer will recognize it and everything will be peachy. Until iTunes freezes again, and I have to shut it down again, and then even if I open iTunes manually, it will not recognize the iPod (which won't appear in the sidebar in iTunes the way it usually does). Anything I can do to get my iPod and iTunes back on the same page, so they will play nicely together again?
    Thanks!

What version of iTunes are you running on your PC? What about the iOS version on your iPod Touch? Is it possible that you are running iOS 4.2.1 on your iPod Touch and have an iTunes version lower than 10.1? If that is the case, try updating your iTunes to the newest release and see if that helps.

If iTunes purchases, delete and redownload by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise delete and resync if they play OK in iTunes on the computer

  • My ipod and itunes both are skipping to another song about in the middle of the song. It doesn't happen on all songs...only some songs. I have reset the ipod, I have done a restore, I have reloaded itunes, I have updated the ipod but still am unable fix

My ipod and itunes both are skipping to another song about in the middle of the song. It doesn't happen on all songs...only some songs. I have reset the ipod, I have done a restore, I have reloaded itunes, I have updated the ipod but still am unable to figure out why. It did not used to do this. I can't figure out any pattern to the songs it does it on versus that it doesn't do it on. Some of the songs are purchased, some are imported, etc. We are running Windows 7.

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

  • All songs erased from ipod and itunes

I'm trying to help a friend and learn in the process. When he turned on his ipod all the songs were gone and when itunes was opened to see about putting the 3000+ songs back on to the ipod the library had disappeared as well. He said he hadn't done anything, and he didn't back up any of the music. Is there anyway to rescue all of these songs from either itunes or the ipod? We bought and ran a program called Recover My Ipod, but it didn't work and I'm not to sure about it's reliability. Any help at all would be great it's windows xp.
      Windows XP

Don't give up on looking for the songs.
You can use Explorer to search your computer for missing songs.
On the Start menu, click "Search".
    Select "All Files and folders".
In the "All or part of the file name" field, type the song name and then click "Search".
If you see the file you are looking for in the Search Results window, you can add it back into your iTunes library.
See: How to add songs from your hard drive to iTunes.
If they truly are gone from both the iPod and iTunes, have a read of this post which offers some hope.
