Memory Hangs in Illustrator CS3

Hello!
I recently upgraded from a Mac Powerbook G4 1.67GHz with 2GB RAM to a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM. I did a clean install of CS3 on the new machine, and since then I keep experiencing memory hangs, mostly when interacting with the pallet menus (layers in Photoshop,InDesign, Illustrator, type in InDesign , etc..). I haven't noticed an of the filters in Photoshop being any slower – in fact those appear to be a little zippier than on myPowerbook . I've found that the same operation when done through the pallets hangs, while it goes as smoothly as expected when done through the menus (Hide Layer is a perfect example). Does anyone know a solution to this? I'm planing to install more RAM, but I would think 2GB would be enough to prevent these system-wide memory hangs on operations that shouldn't be that big of a task in the first place.2
Thanks!

Well, re-consider waht you just said, given that the operating system itself can consume up to 1.3 GB with all bells on. 2GB is by far inadequate for most computers these days. That does not necessarily explain your hangs/ laggy behavior, but it may be related. What you should definitely check, is whether the apps in question are not running in Rosetta emulation, but in intel native mode. For some reason that sometimes happens. Also, in case of strange issues, it is a good idea to run tools like OnyX and flush any cahces, including font cahes, system prefetch, boot cache. On that same topic, generalyl look for thijngs like offensive/ bad fonts as well as possibly otehr components inetrfering. Some Haxies for instance do interfere with some Adobe apps, but not all of them, leading to seemingly arbitrary behavior between apps...

  • Illustrator CS3 - "Not enough memory to place the file."  Help!!!???

I have a new machine running XP Pro 64.  Intel i7 processor, 12 gb ram.
I am trying to place a fairly small Photoshop image (with layers) into Illustrator CS3.  I have done this countless times with XP 32 bit os.
But now, I cannot place even a small Photoshop image into Illustrator... I keep getting the error "Not enough memory to place the file."
I tried the suggestion of 'right-clicking' the Illy launch icon and going to properties/compatibility and then selecting "Run this program in compatibility mode for..."  and then I check marked Windows XP.
Someone else said this worked in Vista 64.....but it DID NOT work for XP 64.....dang it.
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks

Well..... I just tried the same function on my 64 bit Leopard operating system on my MacBook Pro just for kicks.  Worked flawlessly!!
So, why won't it work on XP 64 bit? Is this a case of 'the mac os is just better?"
Talk about flame bait -- You trying to start the platform wars again? ;-D
Can anyone tell me if they can place a Photoshop image from WINDOWS 7 64 bit OS into Illustrator without issue?  We're talking 'PLACE' .... not paste.
Don't know about Windoze 7; but that operation works in Vista x64. XP x64 is
quite flaky at times. It was never finished IMHO.
Sure would like to know.  I'd upgrade if it made the difference.

  • Printer dialogue box hangs when printing from Illustrator cs3

OK... I'm not sure if this is Illustrator related or mac related, but it only happens from Illustrator. In our office we have an iMac (white, flat) running Tiger (OSX 10.4.11). Whenever we try to print from Illustrator CS3 the preint goes through to the printer immediately and prints, but the actual Illustrator spooling bar/printer dialogue box remains. The only way is to wait for about half an hour for the bar to finish or force quit the application and restart (even though it does not show as "not responding" in the Force Quit window.
Now I've tried reinstalling Illustrator. I've run disk warrior. Tried the fsck command on startup. our technical outsources tell us it might be a memory problem, but I'm not tsure as this only happens in Illustrator and no other programs.... any ideas?

I can vouch for the dock hiding solution solving the problem. It worked on three Intel Macs we were having problems with. Here are some links to articles about it:

  • Illustrator CS3 - problems saving as pdf  (or pdf-compatible)

    Hi,
My office are trialling Illustrator CS3 as we're getting some business card type work and we'd like to be able to send the proposed designs to the client as a multi-page PDF.
Unfortunately, I'm having a terrible problem when saving a particular file i) as .ai format, if PDF compatibility is checked, &
    ii) as a PDF.
In both cases the progress bar goes half way and then Illustrator hangs, eventually saving after 3 hours, at the last try!
The multi-page document consists of 7 x A4 tiles, I know this sounds big but actually there's not that much stuff in it: on each page there's a bit of text, a gradient, 3 monochrome logos and two drop-shadows. There is also a spot colour and a linked image (500kb). If/when it eventually saves the pdf is <150kb and the .ai is <2mb.
I've tested various options when saving to try to trace the problem and it ONLY hangs when PDFing is involved; it saves with compression really fast.
Obviously the time it's taking isn't practical so I'm hoping someone can suggest what might be wrong. The PC is a decent spec: WINXP sp2 / 3GHz P4 / 1mb ram / 256mb gfx / 1.5Gb swapfile / 5gb defragged space on HD. I've looked at the Windows Task Manager as Illustrator is trying to save - the CPU is only up to 50% and the swapfile usage is 300mb - if it's taking so long why isn't it maxed out?
Hope someone can help, thanks in advance.
    smithy_ss

I can't save a 1.4 meg .ai file as .pdf. Program freezes.

  • Illustrator CS3 wont open

    Hi folks,
Ive recently started having problems trying to open Illy CS3...Im getting the window saying 'The application Illustrator has unexpectedly quit' when I try and open it.
From reading these forums I have done various things that people have said to do, ie:
    1) Send the crash report
    2) Check font book for any corrupt fonts
    3) Deleted fonts I never use.... now I have 288 fonts, is that still too many?
    4) Ive created a new user but still no luck
    5) Ive restarted the machine a few times
    6) Ive went to user/library/preferences and deleted the illustrator cs3 folder
and none of these have worked.
    Im using a 24" Imac...2.93 GHz...Intel core 2 duo...4GB memory...and ive still loads of space on disc.
    Any help is great.
    Thanks

I have to ask you a couple of things first,
Did you quit Illustrator before you trash the Illustrator Settings folder?
Did at the same time trash the com.adobe.illustrator.plist file also in your user's preferences? You can try trashing both but you must first quite Illustrator.
Did you try to disable all your fonts except for the systems fonts?
When you created a new user did you load your fonts under that new users? I think you loaded your fonts, you should not have if you did!
Did you delete the font data base files the AdobeFnt.lst files?
I do not think you did that at all.
I think you have a corrupt font or your scratch disk is pretty full.

  • InDesign CS3 Crashes When Placing Illustrator CS3 Art

    Hi all-
I've been having some problems over the past week with InDesign CS3. Specifically each and every time I try to place an Illustrator CS3 element, the dialog says it is importing the art. Then the trouble starts - InDesign grinds for about 10 seconds and then I get an error message stating that "InDesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."
When I click on details, I see that the error signature is "AppName: InDesign.exe AppVer: 5.0.3.662 ModName: adobepdfl.dll ModVer 8.1.0.1146 Offset: 001a1fcd"
I've already done the obvious - trashed my prefs files, then deleted the CS3 Suite (Master Collection if that matters) and reinstalled - still have the exact same issue. I even zapped the dll after the reinstall, and then reinstalled again - no luck.
This ONLY happens with native Illustrator art - .pdf, .eps, .PSD, .jpgs, etc can be placed with no issues. Yeah, I can save everything as an .eps, but that will take a lot of time to convert every asset.
I'm on Windows XP, Service Pack 3, running on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with 2 Gigs of physical memory. Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00 GHz.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help, here!

  • Force Quit Illustrator CS3 on PC

HELP!! I'm working on a PC and every time I try to quit Illustrator CS3, the program delays and does not quit. The only way to get out is to force quit. This is so frustrating. I remember reading something about it on another forum and it mentioned to install an Adobe Bridge patch. This worked for a few days and then my Illustrator went right back to needing the force quit. Anyone else having this issue. Please help!

    Hey Dan,
I found this message on a Photoshop forum and I deleted all unused network printers except my main printer and the PDF option and so far, as of yesterday, it has worked. Let me know if this helps.
    Photoshop CS3 Not Responding trouble
    feckmo - 03:37pm Nov 10, 2007 Pacific
    Hello!
I'm having trouble with Photoshop CS3 that is causing real productivity issues for me. Basically, the software hangs *constantly* but randomly. It doesn't crash -- it merely sits and sits and sits for 30 - 40 seconds when I attempt to do just about anything. Resize, apply effects, transform, save, print, you name it. The weird thing is that it does NOT do it consistently. In other words, applying a layer effect to one layer will cause the problem, but applying the same effect to another layer (or even the same layer) will not cause it the next time. Or maybe it will. Again, it's constant, but apparently random.
Clicking once anywhere on Photoshop when it's in this "hanging" state causes the title bar to switch to "(Not Responding)". Clicking it again causes the whole application window to turn white as though it crashed. Then it recovers and continues merrily on its way.
My machine is a workhorse -- Two dual-core Xeon 3.2 GHz processors, 4 GB RAM, 32-Bit Vista, 4 TB disk space.
I searched the forum and the Web and couldn't find much on the issue, but I have confirmed that the issue exists on more than just my machine. I also have the issue on my laptop.
Any thoughts or a point in the right direction? This issue isn't crippling, but it's more than a little frustrating.
    Thanks!
    --Jim.
    Response:
    Jim,
This behaviour is usually caused by PS constantly trying to find a printer that isn't there.
Do you have a network printer configured?
Try to disable printers in Windows to see if that's the culprit.
    Rob
    You might also try this:
Launch AI and go to Preferences > Plug-Ins and Scratch Disks. Change your Scratch Disk from Startup to C. This allows your entire hard drive to become your scratch disk, not just the startup folder. You can set secondary scratch disk to C: as well. Or another drive letter if you have more than one hard drive. Close AI and relaunch the app for the changes to take effect.
    Good luck, E

    appRef.DoScript "Change", "Convert"
    While (appRef.ActionIsRunning)
    WScript.sleep 1000
    Wend
    Error 1:
Could not complete the Play Command because the action is playing.
    Error 2:
The Object "Document Color Mode: CMYK Color" is not currently available.
Could you please explain how to solve this error.

The input data provided as the first argument to ore.tableApply and rqTableEval are physically being moved from Oracle Database to the database server R engine, and then serially operating on the entire table  The benefit to using ore.tableApply/rqTableEval in this case is the potentially greater amount of RAM on the database server.  But it's important to note that R’s memory limitations still apply in this case.
You may have already seen the blog post on Managing Memory Limits and Configuring Exadata for Embedded R Execution where we discuss setting memory limits for the database server R engine. These suggestions can be used to load reasonably sized data tables, and you may still encounter limitations when using a very large table.
In contrast to the "table apply" functions, the "group Eval" and "row eval (" functions are parallel-enabled embedded R execution functions. They support data-parallel execution, where one or more R engines perform the same R function, or task, on different partitions of data. The following training and blog links should be helpful in choosing the correct function for your use case:

  • MAC Adobe Illustrator CS3 cannot be installed because it conflicts with Adobe Illustrator CS3

    Model Name:iMac / Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo / Memory:4 GB
When I installed Illustrator CS3 at the first time, I didn't complete it and closed it. While I installed it again, it said "Adobe Illustrator CS3 cannot be installed because it conflicts with Adobe Illustrator CS3". I was be stopped on this step, so I deleted the Illustrator CS3 from Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers without clicking it to uninstall. And I deleted other Illustrator CS3 files. After that, I tried to reinstall Illustrator CS3 again, but it kept to say "Adobe Illustrator CS3 cannot be installed because it conflicts with Adobe Illustrator CS3".
I cannot find any Illustrator in my MAC. What is wrong? How can I install Illustrator again? Should I format the computer and install all the applications again?

On the Adobe site probably under support do a search for Adobe CS 3 Clean Up Script.
Before running the script read the instructions al the instructions first, do not assume you understand from reading the first sentence. There are some files that are not so obvious that are necessary for activation and they are probably still around but they can only be removed by the script.
Next time you will have to read the instructions.
The only other ways around this is the do an archival reinstall of your system or if that does not work a complete reinstall of your system. Running the script is the easier and better way to do this but you must read the instructions completely first.

  • Illustrator CS3: Very Slow Open, Very Slow Save

    Hello all,
I just recently have been issues with Illustrator CS3. Up until about a few weeks ago, it had been running flawlessly. Now, whenever I try to open up any EPS or AI, Illustrator will literally take at least a minute to open it. This happens with a complex 2mb AI files, but also for a tiny simple files consisting of a 1" square on a blank artboard. No matter the file size, it will take around a minute to open it up.
    Opening a 44kb .eps: 75 seconds
    Opening a 210kb .ai file: 67 seconds
    Saving a 76kb .eps: 56 seconds
Export to grayscale PNG: 66 seconds
Export AI Layers to SWF Files: 2 seconds
    This is ridiculous.
Saving is the same issue. It takes a ridiculously long time to save even a blank document.
It's not my machine (2x2.66ghz Intel Mac with 5gb ram, OSX 10.5.6). Photoshop feels a little sluggish too, but not to this extent. InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat all run perfectly. I even uninstalled all the CS3 products and reinstalled to find the same issues. And now that I've been given a time sensitive job, I need to get this program running quickly again.
I'm not sure what I can do to solve the problem, aside from trying to reinstall OSX and start fresh. Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Well, I reinstalled Mac OS X before even trying those methods. It was less of a hassle than I thought it would be. Solved the problems with Illustrator. Everything is running fantastic.
But, I was just working in Photoshop, opening about ~20-30 small PNG's at a time to resize, grayscale, etc. I opened up about 60 at once to make things go quicker. They all opened up, with a little bit of lag. Now, if I even try to open up 10-15 PNG's at a time, they load very slow, like the problem I was having before with Illustrator...
Is there anyway to reset some memory settings? Or clear some cache? I believe this is what caused my issues with Illustrator before (opening too many files at once.)

  • Gradient with stroke problem Illustrator CS3

We make a gradient object in Illustrator CS3 and give it a stroke which is centered. Then we rotate the object and the gradient rotates with the object.
But then when we put the stroke alignment to inside or outside the gradient fails. It shows the gradient in the original 0-position instead of the angle we have created. When we put the stroke alignment back to center the gradient shows as we meant it to show again.
When stroke alignment is on outside or inside before we rotate the object it shows the same problem.
But when I copy an object from CS2 with an angled gradient and a inside or outside aligned stroke. The problem isn't there. When we start copying the object within CS3 the problem shows again (not when I use alt-key to copy, but with ctrl+c and then ctrl+v, ctrl+f or ctrl+b).
Illustrator CS2 didn't have this problem. But now in CS3 we have it. I used to have this same problem in old versions from Macromedia Flash. But I never had it with Illustrator.
Is this a bug or do we need to handle our gradients in a different way when using Illustrator CS3?

It's a memory issue. If you scale your artwork down (say, to 50%), then save, it should work (it can be scaled up in the page layout software). If you're using raster effects you'll have to make sure they scale as well and that your raster effects resolution is appropriate for the final output size.

  • My adobe illustrator CS3 won't work with OS X Yosemite

after installing OS X Yosemite software upgrade my Adobe Illustrator CS3 will not open with the ability to use the tools, only as a Read only file. I was told to install JavaForOSX2014-001 but that has not helped.

Yes I am having the same exact issue.  CS6 works fine except for InDesign.  I have used the Java Legacy Updater with no help to the scenario.  Just bounces up/down and then gives me this nice little error message, which I get repeatedly:

  • Unable to update Illustrator CS3

Adobe Updater tells me my software needs an update so I dutifully let it download what it wants. It starts the installation and then hangs. It gets about 80 - 90 per cent through installing the update for Illustrator (13.0.1) and just sits there. I let it run over night and it was right where I left it the night before. I can quit the update installer without having to Force Quit. Tried to launch Illustrator and it wouldn't launch. Gets to the Open screen and quits. I have to re-install Illustrator. This is the 3rd or 4th time I've tried to update. Same result. Any suggestions? Using on an iMac G5 2.1Ghz, 2.5GB RAM, running Leopard (OS 10.5.8).

Your patch seems to be failing because the ownership of file at following location is not getting set correctly -
    /Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS3/Adobe Illustrator.app/Contents/Resources/AMT/application.sif
(ctrl+click over Adobe Illustrator.app and choose Show Package Contents to view files inside the app)
Correcting the group/owner should fix this problem, or simply rename this file to something else say xapplication.sif then manually run the update.
You may download the 13.0.1 Illustrator update from the following link -
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=27&platform=Macintosh
Let me know if this fix your problem.
