Memory Hangs in Photoshop CS3

Hello!
I recently upgraded from a Mac Powerbook G4 1.67GHz with 2GB RAM to a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM. I did a clean install of CS3 on the new machine, and since then I keep experiencing memory hangs, mostly when interacting with the pallet menus (layers in Photoshop,InDesign, Illustrator, type in InDesign , etc..). I haven't noticed an of the filters in Photoshop being any slower – in fact those appear to be a little zippier than on myPowerbook . I've found that the same operation when done through the pallets hangs, while it goes as smoothly as expected when done through the menus (Hide Layer is a perfect example). Does anyone know a solution to this? I'm planing to install more RAM, but I would think 2GB would be enough to prevent these system-wide memory hangs on operations that shouldn't be that big of a task in the first place.2
Thanks!

Well, re-consider waht you just said, given that the operating system itself can consume up to 1.3 GB with all bells on. 2GB is by far inadequate for most computers these days. That does not necessarily explain your hangs/ laggy behavior, but it may be related. What you should definitely check, is whether the apps in question are not running in Rosetta emulation, but in intel native mode. For some reason that sometimes happens. Also, in case of strange issues, it is a good idea to run tools like OnyX and flush any cahces, including font cahes, system prefetch, boot cache. On that same topic, generalyl look for thijngs like offensive/ bad fonts as well as possibly otehr components inetrfering. Some Haxies for instance do interfere with some Adobe apps, but not all of them, leading to seemingly arbitrary behavior between apps...

  • I am having problem with Photoshop CS3 hanging

I am having a lot of problems with Photoshop CS3 hanging and crashing. Particularly when I open hi-res photos and click on tools, like the type tool. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?
    Thanks.

Buy more RAM, plain and simple. Sounds the program is severely suffocating. for on-screen display fonts need also be rasterized, which also costs RAM, even if they otherwise remain native vectors. How much memory do you have? as a short term solution, you may wish to increase the program's RAM usage in the prefs, but it may not resolve the issues entirely.

  • Photoshop CS3 "Not enough scratch memory available" error.

    Hi,
I am Using Adobe Photoshop CS3 Version 10.0 and I keep getting the error "Not enough Scratch memory available to perform this action" whenever I try to Save a .psd file to a .jpg/.jpeg file.
I did go to Edit -> Preferences -> Performance, and add my other two partitions as scratch disks, also put up my E: drive as the primary scratch disk on the top of the list (Which has 80GB's of space) but I still keep getting this error.
My file (the .psd that i am trying to save to a .jpg) has a total size of 56MB and 300dpi with 4 or 5 layers in it and the target jpg file is supposed to be 12inches by 20inches.
Some other things I have tried is celaring the %temp% folder, Defragmenting my Hard Drive(s), Disk Cleanup, set my System Page file to 4GB, but all this is of no use.
I know that I have enough RAM and Hard disk space so please help me get rid of this problem.
Also, this maybe a stupid question but, does the type of RAM and Processor you are using effect this? I have a DDR RAM.. 2GB, I know its outdated, its our office computer I am working on.. My Processor is a Core 2 Duo which isnt bad.
    HELP PLEASE!!!

  • Photoshop (CS3) Hangs When Started

I just purchased PS CS3 and after spending an entire evening and morning getting to the point where the software asked for my serial number, I still have not gotten anything other than a PS window and an hourglass cursor with the window indicating that Adobe Photoshop CS3 is not responding. I am running Windows XP with all the Windows updates installed. I get the same result with the version right off the DVD or after having dowloaded and installed all the updates to the various components. I did many installs finally using the CS3 cleanup script at level 3 and this allowed me to enter my SN.
If I look at the application event log in XP I can see the following:
Hanging application Photoshop.exe, version 10.0.1.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
I looked through the forum and did not see the exact problem in other posts. Is there a switch that can be used with Photoshop.exe to log the application startup?
Any help would be appreciated. I am starting to think I made a terrible mistake buying this software based on using an older version years ago.
    Thanks,
    John

I am also trying to install CS3 on my computer and I have the same problem. I am using Windows Vista. After installing, the application hangs also just as described. I have contacted customer service who told me to uninstall and reinstall. I did and it continues to hang when opening. I contacted customer service and they told me to uninstall and reinstall. Did so and it hangs.
Several customer service of uninstall, download CS3 from website, and still hangs.
After several days I was referred to technical support, they had me uninstall and reinstall. The application still hangs with technical support on phone. After 2 hours on the phone, we were still creating new users, uninstalling and reinstalling, changing msconfig and still hanging.
Finally I was told by tech support to uninstall and reinstall again but you guessed it, it was close to closing for tech support and was told I would have to call back.
Waited until Saturday and you guessed it, tech support is only available Mon thru Friday. I have to work to pay for programs like this and can't take off during the week right now to spend all day with tech support.
I never saw and answer to the post as to what steps to take to correct it from hanging.
anyone else have same problem or can resolve it?

  • Photoshop CS3  Hangs for over a minute upon opening a file

My Photoshop CS3 (Windows XP) all of a sudden takes over a minute to open any file. The programs starts fine, then when I select a file to open, the program pauses, then hangs for over a minute and the photoshop window becomes blank before the file finally appears. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Photoshop CS3 causing new iMac to hang

I have an issue with Photoshop CS3 hanging my iMac.
When the application is active but in the background and unused for a while and I return to use it the entire machine becomes unresponsive, the mouse cursor can still be moved around the screen but nothing can be clicked (wireless mighty mouse), force quit can not be invoked to kill PS.
I have to resort to switching of the machine in order to get it back up.
Has anyone else seen this, either on an iMac or other intel macs..?

Not to dismiss your problem by any means, I thought I'd report my experience since I'm running PS CS3 as well. I'm on a 24" iMac and PS CS3 has been running well for me.
In addition to the keyboard and my Epson all-in-one printer (plugged into the back), I have a Logitech cordless mouse whose dock is plugged into the keyboard, and I have a USB 2.0 Maxtor hard drive plugged into the back.
I am getting general problems when I try to use my Belkin usb hub and when I use my usb card reader for any length of time, but I can't see that they have had any effect on running PS CS3.
Like I said - not to dismiss your issue - I just thought it might be helpful to share about my peripherals etc.
    Good Luck,
    Frank B.

  • Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 launch hangs while Initializing menus

Can anyone please help me? Everything was fine yesterday, then today CS3 blew up. When I click to launch Photoshop CS3 Extended the application panel displays and starts listing what it's loading. Every time it reaches "Initializing menus..." the app stops responding.
I've already performed a CS3 uninstall and then reinstall and then installed the patches, but the problem persists.
Also, my Illustrator CS3 files will not longer open. The application becomes unresponsive. Illustrator will launch but will not open files. Problem was the same before I did the uninstall and reinstall of CS3. Problem still persists.
This morning I had to repair my HD with Apple's Disk Utility. These problems with Photoshop and Illustrator were occurring before I repaired the disk--thought that might cure the problem.
    I'm using a PowerMac G5 dual 2 Ghz processor
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
    6 GB of RAM
    Any ideas on solutions?

Hi - just had the same problem and found it was related to my printer...
    1. Run CS3 until it hangs (during Initializing Menus stage).
    2. Run Activity Monitor, find the CS3 process, and click the Sample Process button. In the call stack I noticed there were printer-related calls.
    3. Ran System Preferences and selected Print/Fax - it also hung.
I had a networked printer configured.
    Then - to fix...
    1. Killed off everything.
    2. Disabled Airport.
    3. Ran System Preferences, selected Print/Fax, deleted my printer.
    4. Re-enabled Airport.
    5. Ran CS3 - worked straight away.
Even if you don't have a printer problem the Activity Monitor step may help find out what CS3 is up to when it hangs.
    Hope this helps,
    Jon.

  • Photoshop CS3 memory release problem

    Hi,
I have been working on a large group of DNG's and I'm noticing that as I proceed through the edits my computer memory seems to be 'not releasing'. Example: Select photo, process it in RAW, open it in Photoshop CS3, edit, save and CLOSE the image. My computer memory does not seem to be refreshed when I close the image and eventually, after several images, I have to close the application to retrieve the memory. I am running on a PC Vista with 3 gig of memory (max my operating system will work with).
If anyone has suggestions, I would appreciate them.
    Thanks,
    J.

It won't use only 75%, either. It
    i allocates (i.e. reserves)
75% at opening if prefs are set that way, but will use all the RAM that the system has available if necessary. That's the reason you don't set ridiculous memory allocations of 90-100% in prefs (unless you have more than 2GB of RAM, which is PS current maximum) - there's no free RAM for the system to use after Ps launches in that case, so only virtual memory remains for the system and everything will slow or crash.
Once PS has used all available RAM (not only its allocated RAM), then it will start writing scratch - which is also set up and waiting at opening. I'm assuming PS was set up this way for initial speed - if it has RAM already allocated at opening it will not have to waste processor time calling for RAM.
It took me a while to get around the concept of all this, but I think I understand it now - it is in fact very well thought out for maximum speed and stability.

  • Photoshop CS3 Using 16.7 TB of Memory!

According to the Activity Monitor, Photoshop CS3 was using, get this, '16,777,216.00TB' of Real Memory. I spoke with both Adobe & Apple, and neither has any reports of anything similar. I have seen a number similar to that before. Weird! Anyone else have this oddity?

    16,777,216.00TB = 2^64 bytes
(if we assume 1TB = 1024^4B - this is not SI usage)
So it's the maximum amount of memory that can be
    addressed under OS X.

  • Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 - Launch hangs on Registration Screen, All menu items grayed out

    I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS3 10.0.1.
When launching, the window labeled "Adobe Design Suite Premium CS3" opens - it's only filled with white, and no text or graphics (I think it's usually the window asking me if I want to register, which always comes up when I launch the program (rather annoying in itself).  However, now it seems that the launch gets "hung" on this window, as, even the the program starts, all the menus are grayed out, and I can't open any files or do anything.  Also, the window mentioned above only has the yellow "minimize" button available in the top left corner, so I can't close it or otherwise get rid of it.  Since even the Quit function is grayed out, I have to quit the program with a force quit.  Also, this same thing happens in my other CS3 programs (In Design) as well.
I tried trashing the photoshop plist file (com.adobe.photoshop.plist) and also the com.adobe.118.registration file, which had no effect.
Any advice on how I can fix this?
    Thanks!

Hopefully this solution will work for you:

  • Photoshop cs3 hangs when using  "File open"

I am running Photoshop CS3 extended on an HP desktop XP( fully updated) computer - 2 GB RAM -running fine util tonight when i tried to do a "file>open" the file menu idsappears in a split second and then it locks. It acts the same when i use the keyboard shortcut. But if i reopen it and try to open a file through Bridge-it works fine. it also allows me to open recent files.

    bernadettebuechler,
Are you allowing enough time for PS to do its "thing?" By that, I mean that since CS, PS loads and looks ready. Count to 5, and all of a sudden, you will see the hourglass up for a moment. Count to 2, and the hourglass will flash on very briefly. Then, it's ready to go. I've only had one PS lockup from ver. 2.5, and it was because I was anxious to go, PS "looked" ready to go, and I hit File>Open too soon. Palettes go white, "Not Responding" shows in the program title bar, and boom - a lockup.
Speculation was afoot, back when Activation began, CS, that PS was "phoning home," to check with Adobe, to see if all was OK. This was never confirmed, and people without an Internet connection still had this little pause, though their program ran fine, without the Internet.
I quickly learned to be patient, until I see the two hourglass "blinks." This is on two very fast systems, though with CS2. My speculation is that the reason that PS will run fine when an image in Bridge, or Windows Explorer launches it, is that you (and I) are not hitting keys, while it does its little hourglass dance. Instead, we're waiting for our image to Open, and PS is smart enough to not fully load that, until it's good and ready.
I hope that this is what you encountered and nothing more sinister.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS watch for the two hourglass blinks. First is longer - pause - quick blink - good to go.

  • Photoshop CS3 white screen / freeze

had CS3 for over a year or so(legit on work computer) and this just started happening this week. at start up and/or after a few minutes in photoshop CS3 it freezes, goes to white screen and hangs and becomes useless. it starts off lagging like if i turn layers on and off takes a moment to change, if i mask something marquee slowly moves or stops moving altogether, flip between different workspaces, open and close files large and small, any of those it freezes and dies having to force it to close. i have photoshop CS2 also installed and it runs fine. everything else CS3 works (illustrator, acrobat etc.)
    things ive tried:
    1. reinstalling: ver10 of disk does this as well as 10.1 update
    2. delete preferences: from docs and settings as well as thru Photoshop
    3. cache purge
    4. yelling
    5. change scratch disk: i have 3 internal drives
    6. memory test
    7. turn anti virus on and off
    8. change page filing size
    help anyone?

I'd remove them. if they're critical, only put them back when you need them in another app, or get a font manager.
photoshop is very persnickety about fonts and will have problems with a font that's not exactly right, where another app might overlook an internal font error. my guess is there IS something funny about those fonts, but the other apps ignore the parts that are "broken".

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Image Processor not converting files to sRGB Profile

I have been experiencing a problem with Photoshop CS3 Image Processor no longer converting profiles to sRGB.   It converts all of the files from Camera Raw to JPEG, but not sRGB as well.  I used to be able to batch convert an entire folder of RAW images to JPEG, sRGB through the Image Processor.
My Photoshop CS3 Working Space is Adobe RGB (1998).  I need to convert an entire folder of images selected in Bridge to sRGB working space in order to publish a photo album from one of the on-line publishing companies.  I can open each individual Camera Raw file in Photoshop and convert each to JPEG, sRGB, but this takes a tremendous amount of time.
The following procedure has worked for me in the past, but for some reason no longer works:
I select the images in the desired Bridge CS3 folder.  Upper tool bar, "Tools" > "Photoshop" > "Image Processor".  In Image Processor:
Section 1 - ""Process files from Bridge only (11)"  Whether or not I place a checkmark by "Open first image to apply settings", it makes no difference in the outcome.
Section 2:  "Save in same location"
Section 3 - "Checkmark by "Save as JPEG, quality 12".  Also a checkmark by "Convert Profile to sRGB"
Section 4 - Checkmark by "Include ICC Profile"
I replaced my iMac one month ago and reinstalled Photoshop CS3, but this Image Processor problem had been occurring even with my old computer.
Not sure if you need this information:
I'm currently on Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
Processor:  2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory:  8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I don't know if it's related,  Photoshop CS3 on my old computer was running in Rosetta.  I don't know if it's running in Rosetta now, the name does not appear when Photoshop boots up.  How do I get it to run in Rosetta again?

Heh heh heh.  It's always true that we find the answer just after making public our problems, which in turn we did after trying to find the problems ourselves for hours.
Thanks for following up with the answer.
