Memory heat 60*c when idling...should I worry?

The other day I bought off ebay 8 gig of mac pro ram for a very good price.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=11 0346089118
now on the item description it had photos of normal mac pro ram *with the big heat syncs* but the ram I receieved actually looked like this.
http://www.memso.de/downloads/fotoarchiv/produkte/fb4096hym9101280x12801.jpg
Now as you can see this has significantly smaller heat syncs, now my old ram *offical apple stuff* used to be about 45*c when idle and this stuff is idling at about 60-61 *c.
The question I have is should I worry about the temps this stuff is running at or am I safe, Or should I send it back and spend the same about to get a bit less but better quality ram?
I run a recording studio off this machine and I do alot of intensive video rendering too so I assume when its being taxed the ram will get even hotter.
Any suggestions?
Will

The temps are fine. You are lucky to have 45C temps but anything 70C or below is fine. It is when you get above 78-82C that you should be concerned.

And you want to stress them to death to see how well they behave if you decide to stick with them or search elsewhere.
But, they do look unique and unlike anything.

There use to be kits to add RAM heat sinks. Don't recall who sold them.

  • Virtual memory exhaustion when idle

Everytime I leave my laptop for a long period of time (couple of hours) and then come back I get the popup that windows ran out of memory.
So I tried to look into event viewer and here is what I see ( http://goo.gl/TLpkV6 ) //Sorry I'm not allowed to post pictures for whatever reason
The event details display those values:
    SystemCommitLimit 34 235 564 032
    SystemCommitCharge 34 088 890 368
    ProcessCommitCharge 4 058 849 280

    PhysicalMemoryUsage 4 248 018 944
    NonPagedPoolUsage 183 934 976
    Processes 129
I have the default Pagefile size (maintained by system) and it looks like something is using it all even though the physical memory has still about 50% free space
So I tried to attach a task to this event and I used PsList to dump all the processes when this event occurs. However I didn't find anything abnormal in the log.
    Here it is:

When I did the SUM, I got these results:
    VM: 33,601,910
    WS: 4,038,504
    Priv: 4,041,576
    Priv Pk: 7,109,352
So it looks like VM is really 33GB. So I tried to run the same dump again manually when I was using the computer, because I never get out of memory dialog when I actually use my laptop and I got total size of used VM of 39,035,346 KB
However the task manager says only 7.6 GB of virtual memory is used and like I said I never get out of memory error when I actually use the laptop.
    Task manager screenshot here: http://goo.gl/20lyjA
I've never had this problem until I upgraded my laptop to Windows 8.1 through Windows Store. Now I see the out of memory error every morning when I come back to my laptop.
Any ideas how to solve those memory issues when my laptop is idle?
    UPDATE:
I just found out that it only happens when I have a monitor plugged into the DisplayPort (even though the monitor is turned off). My laptop has Core i5 3210M with the latest graphics drivers installed (10.18.10.3496)

Today I killed Chrome for the night but the result is the same
Also Windows Defender didn't find anything.

  • Severe Memory Leak in Mavericks When Downloading

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.9.3 with 10 gigs of RAM.  The RAM works fine and checked out fine in AHT.  Since updating to 10.9.3 when I download things from Steam, iTunes, Mac App Store, etc. the available memory goes significantly down when only running one of the programs at a time.  It gets to dangerously low points around 7-8 MB available (monitored by memory clean and activity monitor.).  The faster the internet connection, the faster the memory is depleted.  It's like its downloading to ram and then writing to disk instead.   When it gets too low I purge the memory through a terminal program I wrote as it clears up more memory than memory clean.
Even after cleaning the memory it still depletes fast if I'm downloading something.  However If I'm not downloading anything on those apps they use little to no memory at all.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • High CPU Usage when Idle

    Hello Crew!!!
I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!
I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!

It is not "normal" and cannot be "normal". Programmers like that must be fired immediately.
It's like iTunes - scroll cover flow fast enough, and you can get memory usage up to 1GB (!!?) which is even not fully returned after you stop scrolling.
And those people are making jokes about Windows? Yes, it is ugly but when they have blunders like this, at least they correct them. Just returned from the shop, wanted to buy 27" iMac. 3.06GHz model was running Parallels with Vista, processor usage continuously like 3-5%. iMac was cooking - if I put my face 0.5m from the screen, I could feel the heat!
I don't know about iTunes... some of the recent Mac apps (Safari, iTunes) are so slow/inefficient I stay away from them. However, Logic's CPU use when idle is completely normal for a "real time" application that starts approx 20 threads minimum. All DAW application do this to some extent, some more than Logic.
What's not normal is how much heat the new Macbook, MBP and iMacs are generating, the folks over on the Macbook forums are starting to see heat related failures.
As a side note, Windows 7 is much more efficient than Windows XP_Professional, that's saying something as XP is a good real time DAW OS. After Vista I didn't expect much but Win_7 is a nice OS.

  • Is it normal to use over 9,000,000k of memory (Private Working Set) when working on 3-4 photos with approx. 10-12 layers each while running CC??

I started using CC in December with absolutely no issues. In April, CC suddenly started crashing on me when I would run certain actions that I have used for years. My first thought was that my computer was going bad. This began a two month process of eliminating any potential computer problems. Fixes were as follows:
    Installed new SSD.
    Installed new 2T storage drive.
Installed new video card and power source to run new video card.
I am operating Windows 7 with 16G of RAM on a quad core, which should be more than sufficient to handle the demands of CC. It worked fine for four months, so obviously it is capable of doing the job.
$400 later, CC still crashed while using certain actions.
As a test, I tried running the same files with the same actions on my husband's computer, which is a year newer. CC crashed on his as well when the actions were ran. After much head banging, tears, and communication with Adobe, it was determined that it's not uncommon for older actions to not be compatible with newer versions of photoshop. As a result, I spent weeks reworking my entire workflow to redo/remove the actions I had come to rely on.
Fast forward to today. I have fixed everything I possibly know how to fix, yet I still have to be VERY careful not to push CC too hard. I used to be able to work on 6 photos at a time, with 10-15 layers on each photo. CC NEVER crashed on me. Now, I can barely work on 2 or 3 photos and it will crash if I'm not careful about running one action at a time (instead of batching) and I have to keep my layers to a minimum. During the time I was trying to figure out my computer problems, I started paying more attention to my memory usage while CC was opened. Before all the changes, I would use 5-6,000,000k of memory with only 2 or 3 photos opened. AFTER all the fixes, I still continue to use an insane amount of memory.
Things to consider before offering any suggestions:
*Yes, I have re-installed CC about 5 times after my computer upgrades, mainly because I could not get my actions to populate. So I don't think a re-install will help.
*I tried removing most of my actions from CC, and it made no difference in memory usage. Besides, when I did the test on my husband's computer, the only actions installed were the few I was trying to test.
*I disabled auto-save and the recovery feature. Still no difference.
So, bottom line, my question is if it is normal to use so much memory when doing such simple tasks?? Most of my layers are levels, curves, fill, and a sharpening layer and noise filter. It doesn't seem those would be considered task intensive. Not only that, but also when I did the test on my husband's computer, I checked his memory usage and he didn't even break 2,000,000k at the same time I was using 5-6,000,000k for the same task. And he only has 12G of RAM. So SOMETHING is not right! Is there a setting I need to change so that CC is not so memory intensive?? I could see if I were doing 3D graphics of something, but these are simple photo edits that I have done for years without any problems.
Sincerely hope that somebody has some/any suggestions on how I can get the memory usage down so I can run CC as it's meant to be - fast and efficient!
Thanks in advance for any help!!

Thanks again for your suggestions Noel! I do hope that resetting my preferences will be a last resort. After my re-install it took me a week or two to get everything back to where I wanted it! For some reason, the way the computer techs set up my new drives, CC did not populate any of my actions/preferences/etc. I figured a round about way to get my actions to load, but it was a real pain in the butt!! I certainly hope I don't have to do that all over again. Although I will say that even before I got everything reset in photoshop, I was still having problems. The only thing I pulled into a fresh install of CC were the few actions that were giving me problems ( I worked with the defaults until I could figure out how to reconfigure everything). Before and after my changes, CC was still crashing on me and using tons of memory. Just something to keep in mind regarding my preferences being an issue.
Here is the information you requested. Hopefully the answer lies within! I have been in tears many times since April trying to get my CC/computer back to running the way it used to. This has put me SO far behind on editing I've even had to stop taking sessions for now. So I am VERY appreciative of any and all suggestions you can offer!

  • New option: "Export XMP when idle"

like many, for performance reason i do not have "Automatically write changes into XMP" checked. yet i am a firm believer that the changes *belong* in the files themselves (for portability), so i must constantly do manual XMP exports when im finished w/ a set.
in my book, "dumb" (not image-specific) manual steps are, well, dumb, and should be removed for an ideal workflow.
therefore, i think it would be cool if LR handled XMP-to-file in a slightly different way -- a new checkbox for:
"Export XMP metadata to files when idle"
...so whenever you leave LR open and you arent doing anything w/ it, it will auto-export all not-yet-embedded XMP changes to the files. this gives you portability, and piece of mind at no manual cost.
    just my thought.
    matt

    > Select only the images you want to write the metadata and/or settings
    > to!
that is an added manual step. as i said, dumb (generic) manual steps that dont relate to the images in question are to be avoided.

  • P67A-C43 / Windows 7 64-bit freezes when idle or during low activity

    Greetings,
I've seen a few similar topics regarding freezes when idle or near-idle, but the troubleshooting steps I've tried don't seem to work. My P67A-C43 with an Intel 2500K Core i5 is not overclocked. It is repeatedly freezing in Windows 7 64-bit. It also did this when I was running Vista 64-bit. I also have Mac OS X Lion on this PC, and I never get freezes under OS X. This appears to be something related to how Windows interacts with idling or lower-power states. But I can't figure out what.
I have tried this with windows on a mechanical HDD and with the current SSD - no change.
I have tried running just one RAM module at a time - they both individually exhibit the behavior.
I have tried switching graphics cards from a GeForce 6500 GT to the current Radeon HD 6850 - no change.
I have tried switching power supplies from an Inland Gold 500W to the current OCZ 650W - no change.
I have tried switching from Intel SVID to APS mode stepping - no change.
I have tried switching C-States off - the system didn't freeze, but it got VERY hot under no load. Without C-states turned on, the CPU temperatures quickly reach 95C to 98C.
I've got the latest BIOS, the latest drivers, and everything else I can think of. Any more ideas?

    WOW do I feel silly.
I opened the case to take a good look at the processor cooling, and found that the fan/heatsink assembly was not snapped in on one of the posts. The pre-applied thermal paste was only flattened on one side of the copper contacts for the heatsink.
I re-attached and snapped it all back in, and now my BIOS temperature reading is about 55C, whether C-State is on or off. In Windows without much of a load, it was 40-45C with C-States off, and 33-45C with C-States on.
    What I've learned:
    - double check your connections
    - C-States is an amazingly effective system
    - Intel makes some darn tough chips. They'll work (sort of) even if you install them wrong.
I'm still not sure if the freezing is fixed - I don't know how long I've been running without a proper heat sink. I'll leave it idling overnight (It's 23:30 here now), and see if it freezes.
Thanks for the help, guys. This is a nice forum.

  • Continual HD activity, high CPU usage when idle

I got my first notebook, a Compaq V2000, a few weeks ago and have Arch set up pretty well on it but I have a few issues.  Even when the machine is sitting idle it sounds like the HD is doing a read (or whatever) about every 5 seconds.  This only starts after I log into Gnome and stops if I log out.
I tried a couple of things with hdparm:
If I try 'hdparm -y /dev/hda' the drive goes to standby but immediately spins up again.
'hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda' disables APM and stops the cyclic behavior.  This would seem to be good but during the 5 second cycle the drive alternates between quiet and noisy and this leaves it in the noisy state.
I tried to determine what might be causing all this disk activity so I edited lilo.conf to remove "acpi=on apm=off" from the "append=" line and in rc.conf I put a ! in front of all modules and daemons and rebooted.  I removed the applets from task bar.  No change.
I ran top to see if I could tell what was accessing the HD but I'm not knowledgable enough to make much sense of it.  I did notice that on my notebook the top summary shows:
CPU: ~30% user, ~10% system, ~60% idle with 'wait' bouncing between 0 and 5%
On my main computer, also running Arch/Gnome, I get
CPU: ~2% user, ~1% system, ~97% idle with 'wait' solid at 0%
On the notebook, if I run hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda the CPU #'s for user and system remain high but the wait # drops to zero and stays there.
I don't think all this HD activity could be good for my machine, and I know I find it very annoying.  If anyone could help me stop all the HD accesses and understand the high CPU usage I would appreciate it.

I loaded lsof and frankly it scared me.  It listed what looked like a couple hundred files and I didn't know exactly how to use that information.
Then I tried laptop-mode-tools.  The man pages didn't sound too promising since it uses, among other things, hdparm, which I already tried with mixed results.  I gave it a try anyway and right out of the box, with no configuration, it worked.  HD access when idle dropped to essentially none, the drive spins down and the cooling fan runs much less frequently.
So far all I have changed in the config file are the HD idle timeouts.  The default of 5 seconds was starting and stopping the HD too often so I changed that to 20 seconds for now.
Whatever laptop-mode did to stop the 5-second HD accesses the effect persists even if I run 'laptop_mode stop' and '/etc/rc.d/laptop-mode stop'.  When I get the time I should be able to use 'laptop_mode status' and laptop-mode.conf settings to determine exactly what the magic bullet was.
Thanks, lucke.  I never would have tried laptop-mode on my own because I thought it only duplicated functionality that I already had with hdparm and powernowd.

  • [Bug] Email - Doesn't check email when it should and plays alert muliple times

There is a bug in webOS 2.0.1 on ither a verizon or unlocked Pre 2 where the email app does not check email when it should. For example, if it is set to "as the arrive" it only checks ever 30 min.
In addition, when emails do arrive it will play the alert tone as many times as there are new emails in the current check. For example if it checks for email and there is 4 new messages the phone tires to play the email alert ringtone 4 times at once.
Post relates to: Pre 2 p102eww (Verizon)

Do you have more than one device checking the email acct?  If so, please have only the Pre2 getting that email acct using as items arrive (IDLE) and see how that fairs.  I can replicate this issue with certain mail providers if I use IDLE on more than one deivce to it.  Keep me posted.

  • Firefox uses up 10% of processor even when idle. Why?

Firefox 3.6 uses at 10% of processor power even when idle, parked on Google. I have McAfee, which uses 5% to 10% on top.
Firefox loses keystrokes. It gobbles up a lot of memory very fast (did not do this before). After about 2-3 hours of surfing, it uses up 6-% to 70% of processor power to the point I have to reboot.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

sometimes, when it can connect, the password already correct, but it didnt want to connect.
it suddenly happened, without i changed the seeetinggs or else.
i read every solutiuon on google., etc2, and tried the way, but it still wont work.
anyone can help ? pleasee ;(

This is a totally absurd suggestion, except that it worked for me with my iPad.  Forget the network, then when asked for the password, enter a wrong one.  Try again and enter the correct password.  Good luck.

  • [Solved] High load average even when idle after update

    Hello arch fellows!
I have a Dell Inspiron N4110 intel i5 4gb ram. I think it is a decent laptop and should run Arch Linux pretty well, right? Well, it does until I run 'pacman -Syu'. After the update, the load average gets over 1.00 even when idle. It hardly gets under 0.40. Before updating, the average is under 0.10 most times. The command top doesn't show me anything. All the processes are practically 0%. It seems to me the problem would be the kernel, am I right? But I tried the fallback option when booting but it is the same.
Does anybody have an idea of what could be the problem? I appreciate any help.

Thanks for the reply. It was really a kernel problem. I downgraded it to an older version and it looks normal now

  • Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?

Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?
I have a macbook 6,1, 4gb of ram, and my os seems to be spinning the rainbow quite often and laggy. I watch my activity monitor and it never drops below 90% cpu available. Is this normal? if not what can I do to clean up my os. Does anyone have any resources or help? Thanks

    Hello:
    Answer - no.
The activity monitor should indicate what is consuming the processor when your system is idle.
I just looked at my own system with Safari running and the usage is about 3%.

i was talking to someone at frankfurt about this (possibly logic had crashed on something we were looking at - i don't remember) and they said error messages like that were for the developers. the fact you saw the error message yourself was in itself a bug.
i don't know for sure, but i think you are seeing some kind of bug relating to memory management. try deleting history and reorganizing memory if you get this error a lot.
