Memory in ipod mini

I have an ipod mini that currently has 3.7 GB with 819mb available. My iTunes Library file has 3.87 GB's.
I can't download the 3.87 into the mini even though the majority of the songs are already on the mini. I'm just doing an update.
What am I doing wrong?
Sony   Windows XP

If you look at the numbers he posted, it is not a simple as "the library is larger than the iPod holds".
iTunes shows 819 MB still available on the iPod.
3.7 GB plus 819 MB = 4.519 GB
His library is 3.87 GB.
According to the iPod it should fit but it won't go.
Assuming it's a 4GB iPod, in reality, only 3.7 GB is available.
Probably just glitch in the iPod.
Reset the iPod.
If it doesn't clear it, restore it.
Generally, I have ~25-100MB that won't get filled up, even though songs are ~5-6MB each.
Try deleting songs your not too keen on, or songs you don't listen to too often.
Not a real good solution. What happens if he gets more songs?
Make a smart playlist.
Edit it so it selects 3700 MB songs at random not rated 1 star.
Rate songs you do not like as 1 star.
Open iTunes prefs -> iPod and select Update only selected playlists and select this new playlist.
The music (all of it, no matter how much) will cycled through the iPod whenever it gets synched.
Any songs rated one star will be removed from the ipod and will not get reloaded.

  • I think my iPod Mini has battery memory. I need help.

I searched all over this site before I bought my Mini and this site said that you can't get battery memory on iPods. Well, everything that's happening to my Mini now, suggests to me that I have battery memory.
After charging it it displays the "no battery power remaining" symbol.
After charging it again for about 4 hours, it plays for about 2 and then that symbol appears again.
Sometimes I can then switch it on again right after and play it for about another 4 before it displays it again.
So please help if you can. Is this battery memory? And if there anyway to replace the battery if it is? Or fix it if it isn't?
I'd really appreciate iit if you could help me

Sounds to me like it's time for a new battery. Lithium-ion batteries of the type used in the iPod do not suffer from the memory effect.

  • Ipod mini memory issue

My Ipod mini randomly loses songs from its memory if I don't use it for at least a week. And the screen is starting to get glitchy, too. What do I do????
      Windows XP

Usually Apple doesn't actually replace the battery, but instead places it with an exact model.  So yes, your data will be lost, so be sure to back it up to your computer if at all possible before sending it in for repairs/replacement.

  • Old iPod mini with a new iMac using a different iTunes library

I just bought a new iMac (never before owned one). I have an iPod mini with a bunch of music on it that I downloaded from a library on an IBM, which I no longer have. How can I transfer all of the music that is currently on my iPod mini to the library in iTunes of my brand new iMac? I can't seem to find any options that allow me to do this. It looks like I can only erase my iPod memory and replace with the Library on my iMac, which is currently empty. Please tell me that I don't have to re-create a new libray on my iMac.
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the information. I just got done with the iPod. I was able to use Senuti to dowload all of the contents of my iPod into iTunes and then update my iPod mini's software and reload all of the songs back onto the iPod. It was freakin' awesome!!
You really saved me a huge headache and a boatload of time!!
    Thanks again!!!

  • Non responsive Ipod mini

    Hi,
My ipod mini has gone strange on me! I have been transferring music and podcasts to it successfully until last night, when I get an error message when transferring ipods which says "the ipod cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable". The podcasts I'm trying to move show up on the ipod through itunes (and shows and increased use of memory on the ipod) but it doesn't update the actual ipod. If I try to move music it simply won't let me move it at all. Other than once disconnecting my ipod before ejecting (after which it worked fine), I don't know what I could have done to have caused this. All of my ipod music and podcasts are still on my ipod and plays fine. Just can't move new stuff on there!
    Any suggestions/help please?

  • ITunes no longer recognizes iPod mini

Things with my ipod mini have been going downhill lately. Along with reduced memory (down from 4G to 3.77G last time I checked) and a weaker battery life, then it had when I first bought it. Now for the first time, the ipod is NOT SHOWING UP IN iTUNES! I realise the thing is getting old (almost 2 years) but I'd really rather not replace it yet, until it totally craps out on me and stops working (is that time coming soon?).
When the device was new and I connected it to my PC via the usb port, iTunes would open and the mini would be displayed on the left hand menu. Now it isn't showing up at all, I've given it some time, and it still isn't present. The mini beeped a few times when I first connected it, and the logo showed the cross circe with the "do not disconnect" logo. and then it went to the battery filling, only the graphic does not show the battery filling with the logo "charging" as it used to but instead the battery is 1/4 full and there is no movement in the graphic. Every once in a while it flashes back to the "do not disconnect" and beeps before returning to the battery graphic.
The iPod is of no use to me if I can't update music on it, unless I want to listen to the same songs over and over, but I'd really like to be able to update them, that's what I bought it for. Last time I charged it via the usb port on the computer it had difficulty (it did show up though) and I thought it had to do with my music library finally exceeding the mini's limits. The mini wouldn't charge and instead kept trying to update the libray of music, when it was too much for it to handle. I managed to go around the obstacle by deleting music off of it and dragging new music from my library onto the mini's icon in the menu (then it was in the mini's music.
After that incident I haven't had a need to update music on the mini and I have charged it using outside ports, which have work normally with the mini behaving like it used to and charging completely.
I'm hope my post is understandable, I'm not a very technical person, so my language might be amatuerish. I really would like to enjoy my mini again though so any help is appriciated.
    Thanks, Ashley

Update: I disconnected the mini for a while and just now tried re-connecting it. This time the ipod showed up in the menu after a minute or two. It still doesn't want to charge through the usb, but I can continue to use the wall port for that if I have to. Good news is I can now update my songs again =)

  • IPod mini shows up as corrupted in iTunes but works on another PC

I know this is a long shot, but I'm having some issues with my iPod mini and am hoping someone here has heard of this before. When I tried to sync my mini up with iTunes v7 I got a message saying that my iPod was corrupted and that I should restore it. I did this and it didn't correct the problem. After trying several different fixes that I found on the support page I gave up and purchased a new iPod nano. When I connected the nano I got the same error. Upon further investigation I discovered that my mini and the nano work perfectly fine with iTunes on every other computer that I've tried. I turned to a friend for help and we discovered that my computer isn't recognizing that my mini is formatted - it's showing the system file as RAW instead of FAT32. When I connect it to another PC it shows the correct formatting. I've tried everything that I can think of and still can't figure out the issue. If anyone has had this type of problem and knows how to fix it I would be very grateful for your help!

hmmmmmm. by any chance do you have a digital camera?
i'm thinking it's plausible here that you could be getting a Windows drive letter confusion on the PC, where the PC is thinking that your ipods are a camera (or some other device with onboard memory storage).
that's actually also consistent with relentlessly getting some messages telling you to restore the ipod (even though the ipod is showing up as perfectly fine on the PC).
working on that theory, let's see if these documents are of any help:
"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore"
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • How do i get rid of all the songs on my ipod mini?

I want to get rid of the songs on my ipod mini but i dont want to delete the songs on my itunes? i am doing this because my itunes are only 1.1 GB but on my ipod mini it says ive used 2.81 GB. whats going on??

This seems to happen from time to time. I have not read a good explanation, but I suspect that the iPod's operating system isn't the best at memory management.
These are the ‘standard’ fist steps to this type of issue:
First try Resetting Your iPod to correct this problem. It may take several attempts.
If that does not solve the problem, then Restore Your iPod and put the music back on your iPod, from iTunes.

  • Switching iPod mini from windows to Mac, and how to transfer music files

Hi all. Brand new mac just getting it setup, an Imac, love it so far. I have an old ipod mini I got a couple years ago, it was setup as a windows mini. Plugged it into my imac and it doesnt do anything. As well, I never used itunes software on my old PC, I was using some kind of software called anapod that allowed me to put music in the ipod mini. I've got like 1200 songs on the mini and want to get that into the mac, plus be able to use the mini with the mac now, the pc is hitting the trash when I get all my old files cleared out of it.
Thanks very much for any help!

Hey, not a dumb ?, in fact a good ?......nope, I did not install any software at all, I just figured the imac would recognize it automatically.
We also got a brand new ipod nano, not the new video one, the older one, it was a back to school promo thing, anyways, I got that one all setup no problem, just plugged it in and was good to go.
So I have to install some software on the mac for the mini?
Been doing more reading, sounds like I might have to erase the memory of the mini somehow, not sure how?? But what about my 1200 songs on the PC, how do I get those over to the mac and into itunes?

  • De-registering my old iPod mini

As my collection of digital music is expanding, I'm going to replace my iPod mini with a fifth generation iPod with a larger memory. My mini is only nine months old, and as it's in prime condition it will make a nice gift for someone else.
How do I "de-register" my iPod mini, allowing whoever it belongs to after me to undertake a clean registration of the device with Apple ???
    iPod mini 6GB   Windows XP

Both #1 and #2 are sort of tied together.  The Mini is currently associated with your iTunes library.  If this young girl connects the iPod to her own PC or Mac running iTunes, the iPod will see her iTunes library as a new one.  In order for the iPod Mini to start syncing with her own iTunes library, the iPod must be wiped all all content.  So it probably wouldn't work for you to leave your music on the device.
The only way that would work is it the iPod was set up for manual management.  See here for more details.
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
Perhaps an easier solution would be to purchase an iTunes Giftcard and include that with the iPod.
As for registration, she'll have to register it under her own Apple ID before it is removed from your list of registered products.
Hopefully this helps clarify your 2 questions, at least a little.   Kudos for giving your iPod away like that!

  • Original IPOD Mini Battery

I have been having a problem with my IPOD mini since 2007 and figured since it was past warranty why bother.  But I now want to know the answer since my other IPODs are doing it now. It indicates that it needs to be charged, I charge it until it reaches 100% then I try to use it and it plays 1-3 songs then stops working indicating it needs to be charged again. It only works if I plug it in and use it plugged in. Any ideas what might be wrong with me or the IPOD?

Interesting fact about the iPod mini.  Its tiny "Microdrive" is compatible with standard compact flash cards.  So, you can give it a flash upgrade.

  • Playing Tracks from iPod Mini throught iTunes

I have an iPod nano and when i connect it to my laptop i can play music from my iPod through iTunes. However, My Father has an iPod mini and he cant play music from his iPod through iTunes when it is connected to his PC. The Tracks are faded out on the screen and u cant click on them to play them. There is also a strange lock symbol beside the Memory status bar on the bottom of the screen. Has anyone ever seen this before or know what to do if if does appear???
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers Gavin.

You have to place the iPod in Manual Music Transfer in order to play music on the Ipod through the PC.

  • I can't put songs on my iPod mini

When i plug my iPod mini into the computer an error bubble pops up in the bottom right corner of my screen saying that the destination of the file is invalid. I have tried everything and have tried putting the songs on my iPod multiple times and i'm not getting anywhere. The songs i have bought from the music store have not been used 5 times yet and there are 397 mbs left on my ipod, so it is not a memory problem. Please help!

    Manual Transfer.

  • Ipod mini won't reset

My Ipod mini won't reset. Help!

    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. BTW, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
    9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
