Memory Issues with D: Drive on my Satellite L500

This question is regarding my Satellite L500!
Right so my D drive has 148GB of memory and currently has just over 3GB left. I keep getting told to clear it down but when looking through the files there is 7GB taken by "HDD Recovery" and somewhere around 80GB taken up by "Windows Image Backup". This obviously doesnt come to more than 87GB however i cant find anymore files that are taking up space.
My question is why has it become so full? I do a backup every sunday, and have had the laptop less than a year.
Any help would be appriciated, if you need anymore info let me know and i'll tell you ^^
Thanks guys,
George

> My question is why has it become so full? I do a backup every sunday, and have had the laptop less than a year
You said you backup the data every Sunday and the 80GB are used by "Windows Image Backup
This means that the backups which you create every Sunday takes the space on the HDD...
By the way: HDD Recovery is Toshiba HDD image which allows you to recover the notebook without the usage of recovery disk. But I still recommend creating the recovery disk using the preinstalled tool called Toshiba recovery disk creator.
This is important in case something would go wrong with HDD!

  • Has anyone experience iMac memory issues with One Drive (previously Sky Drive) - uses 5GB of my 8GB memory!

I recently started experiencing memory issues with my iMac due to One Drive using up to 5GB of my iMac memory (total of 8GB). Every time I start up my iMac Activity Monitor shows One Drive uses around 4-5Gb of the internal memory for no reason. Previously Onde Drive seemed to work fine, it's only since about 2 weeks I notice this. It's really annoying as the iMac freezes up regulalrly and I need One Drive to synchronise my files across different devices.
Has anyone experienced this too and are there any known fixes?

Yes this is happening to me too, since the last upgrade. Eventually MacOS starts insisting I "Force Quit" all my applications as I have run out of application memory.
OneDrive doesn't appear in that list because it's not an application... but Activity Monotor clearly shows it's the culprit, taking up 5GB+ of RAM.
I've raised the issue on Microsoft's forums:

Try resetting the SMC 2-3 times, if that does not work then the DVD may need cleaning. Get a dry cleaning kit from your local office supply store.

  • Install issue with CD drives / and burning

I am running Windows Vista 64 on a new computer I built (latest ASUS P5K-E with a quad Q6600 cpu and 4gigs of RAM). I transferred all my music and installed iTunes. Everything is working fine except for the burning of disks. It did give me a prompt at the end of the iTunes install and on first startup that there may be a problem recognizing the CD drives. However, there is no problem importing music on those CD/DVD burner drives -- but I cannot burn on those drivers. I can burn using other software on these drives -- no issues with the drives at all. Under iTunes "Preferences", and 'Burning' it states "No supported Disk burners found". Both are Lite-on CD/DVD burner drives and less than a year old -- and of course worked on the old XP computer with iTunes. I have uninstalled, reinstalled iTunes -- no luck. Any ideas? This looks to be something in the Registry on install, but not sure what to do. Any help appreciated.

You may need the CD Configuration folder too, after you install the drivers.
Here is the CD Configuration folder, with the Files you need Just Unzip it and place the CD Configuration Folder into Your C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes Directory

I had my friend with Windows Vista x86 Install iTunes and give me the Folder and Files I needed.
    Hope this helps you

  • USB issues with External Drive

I am running a 1 TB Fantom drive (MDC1000) (2 Partitions) on new OS 10.5.6 MacPro via one of the back USB ports. Been using the drive for over a year with no problems.
Now intermittent issue with mounting drive. After successfully mounting and letting the drive cycle down, the USB2 connection disconnects when the drive starts back up again. I receive the Device Removal Message, then the drive tries to remount. Then I receive the message again. What is strange is that the drive seems to work fine when data is being accessed consistently.
I clicked off the "put the hard disc to sleep" checkbox in the Energy Saver preference which seemed to stabilize the intermittent problem, but now there is an issue with the machine not coming out of sleep, and I get the startup clock icon when I try to restart. The machine does not shut down with the USB connected.
I'm still trying to determine if it's the drive or the machine. I ran the disc utility and repaired the disc as the intermittent disconnections seem to corrupt the trees and directories. I am able to fix them. Is there any utility for testing the USB ports? There should BE.
Could this be due to a recent update? Or lack of firmware update from the drive manufacturer? Seemed to come out of nowhere.
    Thanks for any info.

Just to follow up with this for anyone has a similar problem.
Tried new cables and seemed better for a short time, but then still would not mount successfully.
I called Micronet after I didn't hear back via their email form. The tech there seemed to suspect it was the power connection on the network card in the drive which would make some sense. He confirmed there were no firmware upgrades for the Fantom drive.
Also tried to mount the drive unsuccessfully via Firewire and it did not work.
So my conclusion is that it's not the drive mechanism but the network card in the drive. I have a sinking suspicion that there is a power issue in my office space, which may have affected the drive. I've had other machines and devices which have had power issues in the past.
Does anyone know any simple and easy way to test electrical integrity in a work/office environment?
I bought another 2tb drive, transferred the data and reformatted the old drive to see if that does anything.

  • MSI K8T Neo2 issue with SATA drives....

I have a K8T Neo2 motherboard, with a 3700+ San Diego core, running Windows XP Service Pack 2. I don't have the version with the Promise SATA Raid - using the VIA SATA RAID. I am using the latest BIOS (according to the Live Monitor).
The machine was set up (the OS installed) on an IDE 40 gig drive. All was fine, but I noticed that my machine lagged at times (mostly games, under heavy disk load) so I decided to get a couple of Seagate 250 gig drives (they have NCQ, which I know is not supported by this MB, but they were on sale, and I'd read that the drive should still work ok).
I attached the drives, and enabled SATA in the bios. The machine boots fine. I created a single 500 gig striped array using the two new drives. Windows XP sees the array fine, but that I have to initialize it.
Every time I initialize it I get an error that says, "An error has occured" and tells me to check the event log (nothing there), and to either restart the Disk Manager or reboot my computer. The OS actually locks up a few times when I'm doing this (the mouse-cursor freezes).
I've tried using the disks as two single disks, same error (and it reported that they were only 137 gig each, though apparently it's a registry issue, and I used a util to change that setting, but I haven't tested to see if it changed anything.).
I got the latest VIA SATA drives from the MSI site, and installed them (though honestly, WindowsXP saw the card and the drives just fine). One weird thing is that the VIA SATA RAID is listed under SCSI devices in the Device Manager - there is no SATA category in there.
I'm at a loss here. I've searched the web, and this forum, without luck.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
*Edit* I just unplugged two IDE disk drives from the computer, and when I started it up again, it found a Promise SATA Raid controller. I thought that wasn't included with the basic version of the board?
    David.

Ok - thanks - I read through the stickies and updated my bios tonight to 9.20 (the latest).
Had some dry-mouth moments when WindowsXP decided to "discover" every piece of hardware I had, right down to the mouse, and again when core-center rebooted my computer.
Also, there was some time where my memory (OCZ 2-3-3-6 DDR3200) was being set to CAS2.5, which was kind of weird, but it fixed itself.
Unfort, I am unable to increase my FSB/HTT speed past about 205 before my computer does a reboot.
I have an ATI video card (X800 Plat Ed), and I'd read that some other people had issues with ATI card and the AGP-lock, so I got the CG-ICS950405 clock-gen, and it does state that my AGP is running at 66 (and PCI 33).
Going to bump up my settings via clockgen as soon as I post this (want to post before it potentially crashes).
Should I roll back to the 9.10 bios? Not a lot of discussion on the 9.2, and I'm wondering if it causes some issues.
Thanks again for all the help and info. I used to have a firm grasp on all the components of a system, way back in the P3 days, but things have changed quite a bit...
    **EDIT**
Seems to be a Core-Center issue. Used ClockGen to o/c to 2600, with temp nice and low. Will run like this for a bit. Does Core-Center work with a 9.X bios?
I think all my problems are solved - copied a wack of files to my SATA drives, and there were no issues. I won't trust Live Monitor again for drivers or bios - it's still stuck way back at 3.30.
I'll pass the info I've learned off whenever I can.
    Comments and criticisms welcome.
    David.

I looked at the motherboard page - they recommend 3.30 unless you have having issues (which I kind of guess I am). Funny that Live Monitor won't pick up those BIOS changes - wonder what else I'm missing.
So 9.1 fixes the AGP/HTT overclocking issue?
The stickies are great - thanks.

    Quote
    I have a MSI 975X Platinum rev 2 mb with a e6300 processor overclocked to 2.24ghz.
If your CPU operates @2.24 GHz, it means that you increased FSB frequency to about 348 MHz.
To make sure there is no misunderstanding here, let me point out the following:
Memory frequency is ALWAYS linked to FSB frequency by the FSB/DRAM Ratio you can select in BIOS.  If you select 1:1 for example, the BIOS will show that memory frequency is 533 MHz. This value however, only applies to the default FSB clock speed of 266 MHz:
    266 MHz x 1 = 266 MHz (or 533 MHz effective DDR2-frequency).
If your system is overclocked, what counts is only FSB/DRAM ratio, not the memory speed displayed in BIOS.  That means, if you set FSB/DRAM ration to 1:1 and FSB frequency to 348 MHz, your RAM will operate @:
    348 MHz x 1 = 348 MHz (or 696 MHz effective DDR2-frequency).
    The main question is:
What are you talking about when you say, you can't make your RAM operate @800 MHz?
The BIOS does not offer a proper divider to get your RAM to 800 MHz @348 FSB clock speed to begin with.
You have the following choices if your overclock your system:
    FSB=300 + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1.33
    300 MHz x 1.33 ~ 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
    FSB=320 MHz + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1:1.25
    320 MHz x 1.25 = 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
    FSB=400 MHz + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1:1
    400 MHz x 1 = 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
Use CPU-Z to monitor the DRAM frequency that is actually set if you are overclocking.

  • IDCS4 V6.0 memory issue with preflight

When I create a custom profile for preflight and run it i encounter memory issue. Hard disk starts running indefinitely and after a while InDesign crashes. I have try, by steps, to make the profile less demanding (I should try the reverse way) but instead of crashing, indesign finally sends memory error message and can crash later. Apple Activity monitor shows that sometimes indesign requires all the memory available (1,5Go)
Any of you have ever try to set a custom preflight profile ? The basic one is really too tolerant.
    Thank you.
    I'am on Imac 3,06 2 Go

I've spent quite a bit of time working with custom preflight profiles on my MacBook Pro, 2 Gb memory, Mac OS X 10.5.5. I have never run into a memory error. In fact, I've never ever run into a memory error in InDesign. Memory errors can occur because of defective fonts. Have you tried with different fonts? Have you tried on a different computer?
Yes, the [Basic] preflight checks only for missing fonts, missing or modified graphics, and overset text. You need to work with custom preflight profiles depending on your particular workflow.

  • IMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, Finder issues with flash drives - related?

My iMac falls asleep for no known reason, often in the middle of active use. (Similar problem recently described in thread with messageID=11829917.)
Sleep onset is frequent but seems to vary based on both currently-running software and attached devices (particularly USB flash drives). It will almost always wake up when I hit the space bar afterward, but might sleep again within a minute or two, then not for an hour or more. The sleep occurs with little notice (brief stall of display, sometimes enough time to click on another app window and bring that forward before the screen goes dark), and 95% of the time the computer wakes up after hitting the spacebar. The other 5 % of the time the display reappears but the entire OS is frozen and usually requires unplugging the power cable. There are other symptoms in the Finder - more below. Once in a while the fan revs up like a WWII fighter plane taking off from a carrier, but this is unusual and all the really irritating stuff also happens without this symptom, which usually stops on its own. Immediately after reawakening error messages are displayed to report that flash drives were improperly disconnected (Tell me about it! This has been the case for several months whether the computer goes to sleep by itself or if I put it there manually.)
The computer seems to go into sleep mode most frequently when not-particularly-demanding graphics (Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader) and video (QuickTime Pro 7.6.4) apps are running. Turning these off makes nod-offs less frequent but doesn't stop it entirely. When video thumbnails are displayed in Finder windows a lot of time may be required to load the data and this often paralyzes everything else AND this also seems to be a trigger for a nod-off (i.e. QuickTime not necessary to make the computer choke). This is highly variable and some video clips load quickly (< 20 sec), while others take several minutes, and this doesn't necessarily correlate with file size.
Another factor is whether flash drives are connected - these seem to make the nod-offs more frequent AND Finder regularly loses communication to these both while just sitting there and also in the middle of file transfers. A very early 250 MB drive (Lexar - vintage 2004) will always communicate, but different USB2-capable drives all are either unreliable (Lexar 8 GB and KData 4 GB both < 1 yr old) or apparently dead (Lexar 2 GB ~ 2 yr old). The failures may be damaging the drives - they are inconsistent-to-bad at communicating with my MacBook Pro. I know this sounds like the drives are at fault, but there are things which make me suspect the OS (both computers use the same version): 1) different flash drives display the same on-again-off-again behavior AND the 2) the 2 GB drive that hasn't communicated with my Macs in over a month has no trouble talking with my wife's WinXP computer. When communication isn't working with these drives, they do not show up in either Finder or Disk Utility. When the Mac-dead 2 GB Lexar is plugged into either computer and I launch Disk Utility, the initial scan for drives never finishes so I have to force quit. (When they are working, on the iMac the large drives only appear in Finder if I go to User and press Command-uparrow (to go up a directory layer) - in columns display mode nothing appears in the left-hand column.
(The following describes a set of problems I've had a little longer and which may or may not be related):
At times the Finder loses some but not all functions:
    1) Sometimes files in the Trash can't be ejected* even when all apps are turned off
    2) usually when problem 1) is observed, no keyboard commands work: nothing happens when pressing Command-W, Command-uparrow or Command-N to open a new window. Text typed will not be entered to change filenames (but this can still be done by typing the desired text in TextEdit, copying there and selecting and pasting with mouse commands.)
<* I have downloaded an app for forcing file deletion, but haven't really needed it - the delete option and keyboard commands all return after shutdown and reboot, and there's usually enough annoying stuff going on by this time that that seems the best thing to do.>
Things which I've tried to fix it with so far (not in this order):
    - blowing dust out of the back with canned air
    - checking temperatures - CPU/GPU showing 72/73, HD bay 51, etc.
    - fixing permissions from normal boot
    - boot from install disk and running extended hardware test (no problems found during scans repeated several times during the past month)
    - fixing permissions and running Disk First Aid from install disk boot
    - getting files off the hard drive (was as low as 3 GB free space, currently ~ 35 GB and climbing)
    - clearing PRAM
    - resetting system manager (name? - hold down power button when reconnecting power cable, etc.)
    - Power Saver display and computer auto sleep are shut off (both on "never" - I regularly put it to sleep manually)
    - virus scans (Clam XAV)
I realize that this is a kitchen sink collection of symptoms, but these things may be related and if so, OS developers may want to be sure these problems are avoided in current versions. (Yes I will upgrade my OS soon...)

Thanks for checking in, Miriam - sorry to get testy about it.
The iMac's RAM is maxed out (2.5 GB)
Yes, the system log does report overtemp message to Power management prior to shutdown (today's log at end of post)
Where do I find normal temperatures for the system? What are the important parameters to watch and what sort of fixes are possible?
    iStat currently shows:
    HD 54° CPU 67° GPU 72° Incoming air 38° (???)
HD bay 54° GPU ambient 71° opt drive 49°
    ==========================================
Console.log was largely full of stuff about a bad flash drive I stuck in as a Hail Mary and failure of communication with a scanner (old HP, driver package installs a program which starts at launch which doesn't show up under Startup Items. Apparently the permission got mislaid, so I fixed permissions and this seems OK now. (Only included that because some of it shows up in System.log and it's not worth focusing on.)
[That all said, there is a software/OS component to the problem and it is graphics-related. The other night I was looking at some flash videos in a series and one in particular repeatedly caused shutdown, while others played normally: domain = jebhost.com /youtube/list.php?q=Henry+8.o&Submit=GO "The Tricycle Thief" only played through once out of about six tries.]

  • Out of memory issues with PSE 8

I am using PSE 8 64 bit on a Dell desktop computer with Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 920 at 2.67 GHz. with 8 GB of ram. My operating system is Windows 7, 64 bit.
My problem is that I get out of memory or insufficient ram messages in PSE Editor with some PSE tools when my CPU resource utilization reaches 37 to 38%. In other words, even though my computer is telling me I have almost 4 GB of memory left, PSE is saying it does not have enough memory to complete the operation. It looks to me as if PSE is only using 4GB of my 8 GB of Ram. Is this true and what do I need to do to allow PSE to utilize all of my available ram.

Thanks, that does answer what the problem is, but not necessarily a solution. I like working with 8 to 10 pictures (files) in the editor tray at a time. I make whatever changes needed to each and then group 4 or 5 into an 8.5 X 11 collage. Each picture in the collage is a separate layer and each separate picture may multiple layers of its own. I print the collage on 8.5 x 11 photo paper and then put the page in a photo album. I like the pictures in different sizes, orientations and sometimes shapes, so the album and multiple picture options offered in PSE are not much help. My process eats a lot of memory, which I mistakenly thought, my 8 gb of ram would solve.
Anyway, now that I know the limitations, I can adjust the process to avoid the memory issue and hopefully, a future version of Elements will accommodate 64 bit.
Maybe, I am wondering, do I need to look at other programs or am I missing a PSE function that would make my chore easier.

  • Issues with external drive on Mac Mini / Lion

I'm using an external SATA drive in a Newer Technologies Voyager dock (which I like to call the "toaster") with a brand new Mac Mini i5 2.3G via FW800.
The drive was formatted using Disk Utility on a G4 running Tiger (10.4.11)
With the drive mounted, the Mini's performance seems to slow down, and it randomly dismounts the drive, with the usual warning, "you disconnected your drive without dismounting it first, bla bla...)
I think I remember when Leopard was new, there was a firmware issue that had to be dealt with, and when moving drives from OS 9 to X and back to 9, I lost access to the data on the drive.
I'm also aware of the partitioning scheme difference when formatting drives for use on the Intel machines.
Could either of the above have anything to do with the problem I'm having here?

I'm not an expert in this, but as far as I know, GUID only comes into play if you want to boot from it, but...... you never know, it could - here is an excerpt from Disk Utility:
If you’ll be using the disk only with Mac computers, choose GUID Partition Table.
Another thought is: how old is that drive? All hard drives fail sooner or later - have you tried to check it with Disk Utility or something like Disk Warrior?

  • Is anyone else having memory issues with Safari after updating to 10.4.7

Safari appears to be using to much memory.
    345 Safari xxxxxx 0.10 9 317.80 MB 703.39 MB Intel
I usually keep the program open and the computer running. However, it gets like this in under a day. This just started to happen since I update to 10.4.7.
    Using Mac OS X 10.4.7 (8J2135)
I am curious if anyone else is having this issue or if anyone knows a work around.

I believe that I have found the issue. The issue appears to be the Flip4Mac Universal Beta. It had worked fine under 10.4.6 as far as memory goes but must have an issue with 10.4.7. I uninstalled Flip4Mac and memory went back to normal range.

  • FireWire issues with external drive in Yosemite

I have just upgraded to OS X Yosemite, and I have an annoying problem with my 500GB FireWire external drive (which I use for Time Machine backups).
Basically, after updating the drive won't show up anymore, neither in the Finder nor in the Disk Utility. I also tried the "diskutil list" command in the Terminal, but it is nowhere to be found. Note that the drive does indeed receive power from the port - it spins - and when I look into System Report --> Hardware --> FireWire it does show up there (but I can't mount it). Furthermore, if I use a USB cable to connect the drive everything works fine, so the disk itself seems to be OK.
The funny thing is that if I boot with the drive plugged in the FireWire port the system mounts it normally. But as soon as I eject the drive, I am unable to mount it again (unless I switch to the USB cable, as mentioned above).
Prior to the update, everything worked flawlessly. For now, I backed up my Mac via USB 2.0, but it's very slow and I definitely don't want to resort to this workaround everytime. And it goes without saying that I don't like having issues with my primary backup device in general.
I already did all the usual troubleshooting (rebooting, resetting NVRAM and SMC, ...), but the problem still persists.
    Any suggestion?

I had the same issue on a rMBP 13'', brand new 2015 March.
Two thunderbolt adapter connected: one for ethernet, one for firewire Lacie drive.
    and...
even after taking the ext. Firewire on the Spotlight exclude list, and also after disabling sleeping hard drives, I always got the issue.
Until I realized that touching the laptop or moving the screen was immediately leading to disconnection.
Then I exchanged the thunderbolt connectors, and now it is stable and does not disconnect again.
??? Maybe one of the ports is more "delicate" than the other?
    Big hardware weakness here...

  • Issue with HtmlUnit Driver by using oracle extended selenium webdriver

    Hi,
I need to run test case in silent mode i.e. silent playback. Thus, using HTMLUnit Web Driver which is available in oracle extended selenium binaries.
The recorded files works fine with firefox driver but when i converted my code to html unit driver, it failed to find link inside ADFTable of my fusion web application.
Is htmlunit driver which is in oracle extended selenium files compatible with ADF Application???
Is there any other approach for silent playback of ADF Application test cases other than headless and VM.
    Please guide on this issue.
    Regards,
    Meera

*## After running csscan and csalter*
Did you really run csalter.plb? csalter.plb should not be run before a full-export A-to-B type of migration. On the other hand, if there were convertible data in the database, csalter.plb should have just reported an error and terminate without changing anything.
*## "[Oracle][ODBC]Syntax error or access violation"*
This error does not say much. Why do you think ODBC does no conversion?
The conversion for the ODBC driver is performed by OCI to/from UTF-16 and it is independent of the NLS_LANG character set. If the C++ application is written in the ANSI mode (does not use wide character data types), Microsoft ODBC Manager will convert between the application and the Oracle ODBC driver, between system code page (Cp 1252) and UTF-16.

  • USB Issue with Flash Drives

I am running XP Pro with SP3 and all updates as well as all Bios updates with Lenovo.
I have an issue with my USB ports.  Everytime I put a USB flash card in any slot I do get installation and driver installed correctly.  But when I go to the Explorer I get "is not accessible"  Then it says under that "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"   But when I leave the USB flash drive in the drive and reboot I am able to to access the drive.  Any suggestions on this issue I am not sure if it was the Bios update or one of the XP udpates.  Anyone else come accross this issue?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Would you try this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
I don't know what you are looking at to determine space available. You need to do that by selecting the device's Desktop icon then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. The capacity and available space will be displayed in the Get Info window. A portion of the device will be allocated for the RDB and directory, so some space will be shown as in use.
