Memory issues with K8N Sli

I run this mostly as a high end gaming rig and am not really into OCing.  I currently have:
Corsair CMX512-2700LLPT 512MB DDR333 XMS2700 64Mx64 184 DIMM CAS2 32Mx8 DRAMs Low Latency SPD Memory w/Platinum Heat Spreader Retail
Is this fine?
But it seems to be running at single channel 64mhz (which I can't figure out)?  An suggestions on what to do here?
If I were to buy some new memory what memory is best for this motherboard?
Registered or non-registered, or is that only Socket 940?
DDR or DDR2?
Buffered or unbuffered?
Does it take advantage of each?
I was looking at buying:

or

or
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=140328&Category_Code=Unbuffered_Corsair
or
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=140866&Category_Code=Unbuffered_Corsair
I did read as many memory threads as I could.

You get best timings with theese , and they would be excellent :
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=140866&Category_Code=Unbuffered_Corsair
And a total of 1GB would be enough for most of us .
As for your DDR333 ram , it should run dual channel if placed in one green and one purple slot .
Slot 1+2 is recommended if only two modules are used .

  • PLEASE HELP! Restarting issue with K8N SLI. need bios help???

      Hi people,
I would really appreciate some help this this problem im having. It’s a bit long winded but ill try to keep it short.
My pcs spec is as follows –
MSI K8N SLI (model MS-7185) motherboard
    AMD Athlon X2 64bit 4200+ cpu
    4 x 512mb ram
Running with a Radeon X700 256mb graphics card.
Ever since I purchased the machine ive been having problems with the pc loading up XP (or any OS for that matter!). Sometimes it would freeze on the loading screen and sometimes it would freeze on the black screen just after the loading screen.  Sometimes while running windows perfectly normally, a blue screen with writing describing the error came up and then the system restarted, however, I would only ever manage to read the title of the blue screen as the pc restarted so quickly. I remember seeing the word hardware though,  so I guessed it was a serious hardware issue. I lived with this for a few months thinking it might be something im doing that’s making it be so unreliable, such as a software issue, but I recently went on a mission to sort it out. The BIOS of the motherboard was password protected and I wasn’t aware of this until I had lost contact with who I had bought the system off, so I decided to restart the motherboard’s settings by pressing the reset button on the board itself. Next time I booted it up it told me that the defaults were restored etc and continued to boot windows, however now I can hardly get windows to start at all, the system restarts on the loading screen 8 times out of 10, and if it does boot up fully then it doesn’t last long before crashing on me. I messed about with a few of the BIOS settings, but to be honest I have no experience with working with these settings, its all very new to me. I have an idea  that it could be the processor or the graphics card causing the problem, just an inkling though!
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you. Adam

Can you furnish us some additional info on the 4 sticks of memory that you have?  Also on the power supply?  There is a label on the side of it that lists the manufacturer of the power supply and the amperage output for the 12volt power rail.
Thanks for your reply. here is some more info:
    4 x Kingston 512mb model no - KVR400X64 C34
The power supply is a Sweex Advanced Gold 650W [BA000110]. max currennt on 12v rail is 25A
Hope this helps. Thanks again for your reply.

  • Question for those with memory issues on k8n neo plat

I have been having issues with my memory on the k8n neo platinum board since i built the system last month and i just recently discovered a fact I had overlooked.
I Have discovered that  if i test the system while it is cool (having sat turned off overnight for example), then memtest will pass the ram just fine and the system will be stable for a short period of time, generally longer if no intensive applications are used, ie. doom3 vs. websurfing).
This system, once it heats up ( seems mostly to be the nvidia 3 nb that needs to be "hot"- that is, a probe placed in contact with the module reaches about 58+ degrees c) then the system becomes unstable and memtest, if used, fails.
Prime95, if used on it when its cool, will usually take about an hour or so to fail, but if its used on the system when its been running a bit ( temps from nb at 58c+ and memory module hot to the touch) then it fails after about 20-30 seconds.
I have placed an active hs on the nb in an attempt to correct this, but temps still remain high with failures occuring.
I have spent the better part of three days testing the sytem this way and the above facts have held true in all these tests.
I have  tested at stock ratings ( not using "auto" in bios, but using "approved ratings" of 10 x 200 for fsb and timings of 2-3-3-7 for my ram at 1:1 (which is recommended as well) since i am testing for base stability at this point;Voltages have been left at auto settings, however.
I was wondering if anyone else with memory issues could try this out and post if this seems to be the case for you as well.
Perhaps the memory issues on these boards are directly related to a problem with the nvidia 3 chipset running too hot?
Does anyone have a memory issue with these boards who is using water cooling on the NB ?
Lack of issues from people using 'problem" memory, but having no failures with water cooled nb's would support my assumption.

    Yes i did mean chipset.
I am using a stock hs/fan from amd, which seems to run a tad hot but, considering that I wont overclock until I can get board stable, its not an issue. (runs 35-40 idle and up to 72 intensive). I need the warranty more then the extra mhz at present.
I removed the stock heatsink from the nvidia chipset and bought a generic chipset cooler (green, very little in the way of fins and seems to be aluminum) with a small fan.
I used a generic silver paste from Compusa to adhere both the cpu hs and the chipset.
I didnt lap either hs, just installed each as per instructions on artic silvers website (figured it had to go on the same way even generic).
I also bought a kingwin thermal center which i ran probes from to the cpu, case, and nb chipset.
I am not using it to adjust fans so those arent connected - its just a reference temp I can see at a glance, esp considering the funky bios reading this boards been known to give.
I assume from these responces that even a nvidia 3 250 chipset shouldnt get as hot as mine?
I asked about that from the retailer i bought this from but he seemed to think it was "ok" at 50ish celcius, but then again he didnt look too confident when he said it, lol.
Idle right now reads on Corecenter at 28 celcius for cpu and 33 celcius for the chipset, although, I have readings of 37 c and 43 c from the kingwin thermal center, which i believe to be more accurate.
My voltage reads at 11.67 for the 12v line at idle right now.
The psu i got is stick from the xblade case i bought in store. (http://www.xoxide.com/xblade2.html)
I have a dvd burner, cd drive, and two maxtor ide hd's attached to the system; The only card is the agp.
Is there a way to check and see if the cpu ispower starved? software monitor or even an external probe perhaps?
I havent put a probe on it, but the ram came in its own heatspreader, which gets very hot to the touch as well.
What temps should I be looking for on these items?

  • Has anyone experience iMac memory issues with One Drive (previously Sky Drive) - uses 5GB of my 8GB memory!

I recently started experiencing memory issues with my iMac due to One Drive using up to 5GB of my iMac memory (total of 8GB). Every time I start up my iMac Activity Monitor shows One Drive uses around 4-5Gb of the internal memory for no reason. Previously Onde Drive seemed to work fine, it's only since about 2 weeks I notice this. It's really annoying as the iMac freezes up regulalrly and I need One Drive to synchronise my files across different devices.
Has anyone experienced this too and are there any known fixes?

Yes this is happening to me too, since the last upgrade. Eventually MacOS starts insisting I "Force Quit" all my applications as I have run out of application memory.
OneDrive doesn't appear in that list because it's not an application... but Activity Monotor clearly shows it's the culprit, taking up 5GB+ of RAM.
I've raised the issue on Microsoft's forums:

  • Bios issues with k8n neo2, turn of memory test, and dmi pool data

    Hey guys.
I recently flashed my bios to the 1.9's for the K8n neo2 running in my main machine.
Everything went ok for the most part, though i had some issues with boot record, and boot.cfg file.  That stuff is all worked out now.
However, with this bios, I constantly get the extended memory test, on my 2 gigs of ram.  The old bios i had, 1.4's, didnt do that.  Is there an option to turn that off?  I cant seem to find it any where?
My 2nd question is this, after this bios upgrade, my verifying dmi pool data takes longer then it used to, if it even did it before, im not sure, because my boot sequence was much faster.
How can I get rid of the "verifying dmi pool data" or speed it up?
    Thanks guys

Tried to used the Bios 1c by Syar's. His bios is nice and easy. Maybe bould solve your problem.BTW do used liveupdate to flashed your Bios or is it manual? Stay away from using liveupdate as it causing a lot problems. Manual is the best way. Refer to my sig for the manual flashing. Here's the location of the files for the Bios 1C. Gd luck.

  • Bad OC with K8N SLI -F

    Hello!
I have a problem, when i try to OC my PC, with this board MSI K8N Sli-F, the FBS isn´t greater to 232. I have a 3700+ SD, and I want to OC more my PC. I try all that I can do. But in this moment I can make anything. So I want to get a ModBios for this mobo. I´ve install the 1.6v bios to MSI. So who can help me!
PD: excuse me for me english, but I speak spanish!! Thx!

    Ok oK... you have reason.
    My PC is:
    Athlon 3700+ SD
    MSI K8N SLI - F
    Kingston Memory Value 2x256

  • [Resolved] No boot with K8N sli Platinum & AMD 64 X2 3800+

    Hye,
I've received these new stuff last night (everything is good until here) :
    - Antec Sonata II 450W
    - MB MSI K8N SLI Platinum
    - Proc. AMD 64 X2 3800+
    - GC Sapphire X800 XL 256Mo
I've assembled all and turned it on... No bip... but all the fans are turning... and the screen says "No signal" and becomes black ( and me    )
    Can someone help me? Please?
On the MSI site, I also found this :
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=641&kind=1
Maybe the proc. and the Motherboard are not compatible? Has someone already tried this combinaison (MB+Proc.)?
    My Thanks in advance.

I will ask the sellers if they can update the Mobo for me.
But with the last version of the bios, will the mobo accept the dual-core with this proc. AMD 64 X2 3800+?
And if it's not possible I'll change the mobo.
    Thanks .................................. again.
Pretty much any SLI motherboard supports the X2 3800. MSI is just really pathetic sometimes. So, I had the Abit AN8 SLI before and their latest BIOS (17) supports all X2 CPUs. But Im sure most other brands support them too.

    I have a MSI 975X Platinum rev 2 mb with a e6300 processor overclocked to 2.24ghz.
If your CPU operates @2.24 GHz, it means that you increased FSB frequency to about 348 MHz.
To make sure there is no misunderstanding here, let me point out the following:
Memory frequency is ALWAYS linked to FSB frequency by the FSB/DRAM Ratio you can select in BIOS.  If you select 1:1 for example, the BIOS will show that memory frequency is 533 MHz. This value however, only applies to the default FSB clock speed of 266 MHz:
    266 MHz x 1 = 266 MHz (or 533 MHz effective DDR2-frequency).
If your system is overclocked, what counts is only FSB/DRAM ratio, not the memory speed displayed in BIOS.  That means, if you set FSB/DRAM ration to 1:1 and FSB frequency to 348 MHz, your RAM will operate @:
    348 MHz x 1 = 348 MHz (or 696 MHz effective DDR2-frequency).
    The main question is:
What are you talking about when you say, you can't make your RAM operate @800 MHz?
The BIOS does not offer a proper divider to get your RAM to 800 MHz @348 FSB clock speed to begin with.
You have the following choices if your overclock your system:
    FSB=300 + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1.33
    300 MHz x 1.33 ~ 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
    FSB=320 MHz + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1:1.25
    320 MHz x 1.25 = 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
    FSB=400 MHz + FSB/DRAM ratio = 1:1
    400 MHz x 1 = 400 MHz (or 800 MHz effective DDR2-frequency)
Use CPU-Z to monitor the DRAM frequency that is actually set if you are overclocking.

  • IDCS4 V6.0 memory issue with preflight

When I create a custom profile for preflight and run it i encounter memory issue. Hard disk starts running indefinitely and after a while InDesign crashes. I have try, by steps, to make the profile less demanding (I should try the reverse way) but instead of crashing, indesign finally sends memory error message and can crash later. Apple Activity monitor shows that sometimes indesign requires all the memory available (1,5Go)
Any of you have ever try to set a custom preflight profile ? The basic one is really too tolerant.
    Thank you.
    I'am on Imac 3,06 2 Go

I've spent quite a bit of time working with custom preflight profiles on my MacBook Pro, 2 Gb memory, Mac OS X 10.5.5. I have never run into a memory error. In fact, I've never ever run into a memory error in InDesign. Memory errors can occur because of defective fonts. Have you tried with different fonts? Have you tried on a different computer?
Yes, the [Basic] preflight checks only for missing fonts, missing or modified graphics, and overset text. You need to work with custom preflight profiles depending on your particular workflow.

  • Out of memory issues with PSE 8

I am using PSE 8 64 bit on a Dell desktop computer with Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 920 at 2.67 GHz. with 8 GB of ram. My operating system is Windows 7, 64 bit.
My problem is that I get out of memory or insufficient ram messages in PSE Editor with some PSE tools when my CPU resource utilization reaches 37 to 38%. In other words, even though my computer is telling me I have almost 4 GB of memory left, PSE is saying it does not have enough memory to complete the operation. It looks to me as if PSE is only using 4GB of my 8 GB of Ram. Is this true and what do I need to do to allow PSE to utilize all of my available ram.

Thanks, that does answer what the problem is, but not necessarily a solution. I like working with 8 to 10 pictures (files) in the editor tray at a time. I make whatever changes needed to each and then group 4 or 5 into an 8.5 X 11 collage. Each picture in the collage is a separate layer and each separate picture may multiple layers of its own. I print the collage on 8.5 x 11 photo paper and then put the page in a photo album. I like the pictures in different sizes, orientations and sometimes shapes, so the album and multiple picture options offered in PSE are not much help. My process eats a lot of memory, which I mistakenly thought, my 8 gb of ram would solve.
Anyway, now that I know the limitations, I can adjust the process to avoid the memory issue and hopefully, a future version of Elements will accommodate 64 bit.
Maybe, I am wondering, do I need to look at other programs or am I missing a PSE function that would make my chore easier.

  • Sata issues with k8n-fsr

    Hi list!
I have serious issues with my sata drive on my K8N Neo-FSR.
The SATA drive is connected on the SATA3 controller, and an IDE DVD is connected as master on IDE channel 1. The DVD is detected by the BIOS and can be booted...
BUT, the SATA hard drive is not detected by the BIOS, and so neither by WinXP or Linux installers...
I tried loads of configurations settings in the BIOS like SATA3/4 Enabled, RAID IDE enabled, ... Boot priority options do not show the HD...
    Please help!!!!!!!
    Here is my config:

Hitachi 160 Go 7200 RPM 8 Mo Serial ATA (bulk)
    Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro
    NEC ND-3500 - DVD(+/-)RW

    hi zorloc,
looking at size of your new drives are they the new ncq capable seagates, in which case it may be a compatability issue. Maxtor 10 series users have had similar issues.
Try updating bios to the new officiial v1.5 which has Raid v4.6 & may be better for these drives.
You'd also be best upgrading to the latest Nvidia 5.1 drivers .
Other than this Try & see if any of the fixes that worked for the Maxtor users work for you.
see Maxtor 16Mb Cache HDDs & Neo2 Problems there are several more member €ric had some success at end of included thread.
Edit: This may also be of interest Ech a fellow Neo 754 user has had a long stuggle trying to get his maxtor 10 to work Updated Neo BIOS to fix Maxtor 16Mb problem?

  • Is anyone else having memory issues with Safari after updating to 10.4.7

Safari appears to be using to much memory.
    345 Safari xxxxxx 0.10 9 317.80 MB 703.39 MB Intel
I usually keep the program open and the computer running. However, it gets like this in under a day. This just started to happen since I update to 10.4.7.
    Using Mac OS X 10.4.7 (8J2135)
I am curious if anyone else is having this issue or if anyone knows a work around.

I believe that I have found the issue. The issue appears to be the Flip4Mac Universal Beta. It had worked fine under 10.4.6 as far as memory goes but must have an issue with 10.4.7. I uninstalled Flip4Mac and memory went back to normal range.

  • Freezing issues with K8N Neo2 Plat & 6800 gt

Well I get random freezing during games. Sometimes it freezes for 5-10 seconds then comes back, while other times it just freezes and the sound comes back but not the game.
I had this problem when I first upgraded.
    K8N Neo2 plat
    1gb corsair xms 3200
    athlon 64 3500
    aslo have:
420-30? antec tru power supply. I cant remember exact number.
    6800gt ultra
    audigy 2 plat
Now I first posted my problem a while ago and someone told me to try chaning the HT to 4x instead of 5x. So I did and it worked. It worked for a few weeks and now the problems have come back.
    Any Ideas?

Along with the above issues, I've also found that a lot of my gaming probs with the 6800 are due to it being a "bandwidth hog" & it's latency needs to be adjusted lower to enable the other devices on the PCI bus (i.e. sound card) to get enough bandwidth to function properly. This isn't noticeable until you start some heavy gaming with a lot going on at once...
If your game ever practically chugs to a halt when a lot of sounds are being produced, this is the main problem. Here's a way & some notes on how to deal with it. Just like every "tweak" though, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone but I got noticeable benefits from it.
    - D/L (I got it @ guru3D) PCI Latency Tool & give the "Read Me" a quick once-over. Write down the values for your devices, in case you need/want to change 'em back. Most items are well labeled - the 6800 & your sound card will be what you are most interested in. I wouldn't mess with the rest of 'em, as they deal with low level system items that are best left alone. Unless you are truly an Uber Geek!
    - The latency for my 6800 listed as a massive 248 clks! For some reason, I've read that ATI cards don't default at such a large value, which might explain why people don't seem to have as many performance issues with 'em. Anyhow lower the 6800 to a more "reasonable" value, like 128 or 64. 64 seemed to work best for me.
    - Save the settings, reboot & test it out. You can experiement with the sound card latency too, in order to find what works best for you, but I wouldn't set it at less than it's default value (32).
    Hope this helps.

  • Overclocking issue with P7N SLI

Hey guys, first time I've posted since I got my board, because I have had zero issues with it.  But that, unfortunately, was at stock settings.  The minute i overclocked the board, I loved its stability.  A Q6600 to 3.0 GHZ on stock voltage and auto everything!  However, I have run into a problem...
When I boot up with a 1420 FSB, I get a clock speed of 3.19GHZ in the POST info, and it loads windows (Vista 32bit) instantly, no problems.  However, all of my applications (CPUZ, windows system properties,, etc) show me at 3.0GHZ still.  I have run benchmarks between 3.0 and 3.2 and I see no variation in points, at all.  I'm booting into windows fine with is overclock, but windows is not accepting and applying it!
Any info that anyone can give would be much appreciated.  FYI, I am running the current 2.1 bios from this site, actually the board came with said bios installed.  Thanking you all in advance...
    -Slamd-

OK guys, just a little update.  My OC is now showing up in Windows and is now making a difference in my benchmark scores.  All I had to do was drop the multi to 8 and then up the fsb to 1600 (for 3.2 ghz) and it booted normally.  It's passed prime for 8 hours now, so I have no reason to believe its not stable.
Still not sure why my OC wouldn't work in windows until I dropped my multi tho, any suggestions?
Only thing I can guess is that the OC wasn't stable at that fsb (fsb hole), resulting in a failed OC.  After dropping the multi, I added some Vcore and upped the FSB voltage a bit, and voila!
Headed for 3.4 GHZ tonight =D
