Memory leaks in JDeveloper?

Hi,
I have created two entity objects for two tables in Oracle database. In windows task manager, I started watching the memory usage for "jdevw.exe". When I keep clicking back and forth on the two entity objects in the navigation window, I see that the memory usage going up with every click. I watched it going from 70MB to 130MB until I stopped clicking.
Is this a known bug?
Product: JDeveloper 10G (preview version build 1375)
OS: Windows 2000 w/512MB RAM
DB: Oracle 8.1 running on the same PC

I have the same problem. I am using ADF with JClient, locally deployed.
And I have also noticed that after approx 5 or 6 commits (i.e. when I insert a new record, enters its values and then commits, and repeats these steps 5-6 times) the memory consumption is radically increased and finally the computer is running out of memory.
I really hope that these problems will disappear in the production release of JDev 10g.

  • ADF 10.1.3.4 Memory Leak

    I can re-produce a ADF memory leak in jdeveloper. The problems seems to be when I am running the application locally in the memory profiler, the memory usage keeps growing until the application halts with a outofmemoryexception. The main problem seems to be object references to the jspx page object (_index_jspx._jspService : line 989) under the char[] object when the application get loaded with 20 concurrent users for about 10 mins. I have tried adjusting both heap and max perm gen sizes higher and re-tested but it still seems to get hit with the outofmemoryexception after 10 mins longer duration.
    This is 1 very simple ADF page which accesses a read-only ADF BC view object with no other customizations. ADF is NOT scaling well in our load and performance tests.
    Here are details about my environment:
    Windows XP service pack 2
    Intel Core 2 Duo process @3.16Ghz
    4 GB of ram
    Jdeveloper 10.1.3.4.4270
    Jheadstart 10.1.3
    Oracle 11g database
    I can provide a dump of the memory profiler statistics at the point of failure if it is necessary.
    This is a critical issue for our team so please advise me on how to solve this asap. Thanks.

    The first thing to check is whether you can reproduce this behavior when you are running your application on a stand alone OC4J and not on the embedded OC4J in JDeveloper.
    If you can reproduce this problem then please contact support and open an SR with the test case.
    We have many customers using ADF 10.1.3 with more than 20 concurrent users.

  • Memory leak and char[] ?

    Hello all,
    I'm not sure whether this post should be here or in WebLogic section, so correct me if I'm wrong.
    I'm working on JDeveloper 11.1.1.3 while deployments are made on standalone WebLogic 10.3.3. This thing occurred in previous versions also.
    With every deployment WebLogic increases it's used memory until the famous PermGen space error, which is after about 5-6 deployments.
    I'm doing my best to understand how to use memleak detection tools. I've switched JDev and WL from Sun jdk which was used before to JRockit, same thing happens. Both JDev's memory profiler and JRockit mission control show something that I really do not understand. char[] uses around 30% of heap space and keeps growing with deployments, next is String with 8%. I never use char in app.
    Am I looking at the wrong thing? Is it normal for char[] to increase on WebLogic on deployments? Does anyone know how to check other things and what to check? Someone on other forums mentioned it would be useful to check if ApplicationContext keeps initializing over again on deployments. Does anyone know how to check this?
    One more thing, I have successfully deployed app on Tomcat, and Tomcat said there is a memory leak in app, but could not tell anything specific.

    It is normal for the PermGen space of the Sun's JVM to get filled after several re-deployments. PermGen stands for "permanent generational". This space is used by classes that is unlikely to need to be garbage-collected, so they are placed in this memory space that is never garbage-collected (for example, the Class instances). When you redeploy an application, a new class loader instance is used and it instantiates new Class instances that fill up the PermGen space. But why this happens on JRockit either, I could not explain.
    We have experienced memory leaks related to classes and components that use native memory. For example, we have had significant memory leak when using Oracle's JDBC OCI driver. We were not able to solve this problem, so we switched to JDBC Thin driver (which is very performant and stable today comparing to some years ago). If you are using Oracle JRockit, you can monitor the overall memory usage by the following JRockit command executed at OS command line:
    jrcmd <jrockit_pid> print_memusage>where <jrockit_pid> should be replaced by the JVM process ID.

  • JSF: partial page rendering is causing memory leak leading to outofmemory

    JDeveloper 10.1.3.2.0
    JDK: 1.6.0_06
    Operating System: Windows XP.
    I test my application for memory leaks. For that purpose, I use jconsole to monitor java heap space. I have an edit page that has two dependent list components. One displays all countries and the other displays cities of the selected country.
    I noticed java heap space keeps growing as I change country from country list.
    I run garbage collection and memory usage does not go down. If I keep changing the province for 5 minutes, then I hit a java heap space outofmemory exception.
    To narrow down the problem, I removed the second city component and the problem still exists.
    To narrow it down further, I removed autosubmit attribute from the country component and then memory usage stopped increasing as I change country.
    country/city partial page rendering is just an example. I am able to reproduce the same problem on every page where i use partial page rendering. My conclusion is PPR is causing memory leak or at least the autosubmit attribute.
    This is really bad. Anyone out there experienced same issue. Any help/advice is highly appreciated !!

    I haven't seen this problem myself, no.
    To clarify - are you seeing this behaviour when running your app in JDeveloper, or when running in an application server? If in JDeveloper, a copuple of suggestions:
    * (may not matter, but...) It's not supported to run JDev 10g with JDK 6

  • Marshelling Web Service Response Memory Leak

    I believe I have found a memory leak when using the configuration below.
    The memory leak occurs when calling a web service. When the web service function is marshelling the response of the function call, an "500 Internal Server Error ... java.lang.OutOfMemoryError" is returned from OC4J. This error may be seen via the TCP Packet Monitor in JDeveloper.
    Unfortunately no exception dump is outputted to the OC4J log.
    Configuration:
    Windows 2000 with 1 gig ram
    JDeveloper 9.0.5.2 with JAX/RPC extension installed
    OC4J 10.0.3
    Sun JVM version 1.4.2_03-b02
    To demonstrate the error I created a simple web service and client. See below the client and web service function that demonstrates it.
    The web service is made up of a single function called "queryTestOutput".
    It returns an object of class "TestOutputQueryResult" which contains an int and an array.
    The function call accepts a one int input parameter which is used to vary the size of array in the returned object.
    For small int (less than 100). Web service function returns successfully.
    For larger int and depending on the size of memory configuration when OC4J is launched,
    the OutOfMemoryError is returned.
    The package "ws_issue.service" contains the web service.
    I used the Generate JAX-RPC proxy to build the client (found in package "ws_issue.client"). Package "types" was
    also created by Generate JAX-RPC proxy.
    To test the web service call execute the class runClient. Vary the int "atestValue" until error is returned.
    I have tried this with all three encodings: RPC/Encoded, RPC/Literal, Document/Literal. They have the
    same issue.
    The OutOfMemory Error is raised fairly consistently using the java settings -Xms386m -Xmx386m for OC4J when 750 is specified for the input parameter.
    I also noticed that when 600 is specified, the client seems to hang. According to the TCP Packet Monitor,
    the response is returned. But, the client seems unable to unmarshal the message.

    Many thanks for your help.  This solved the issue for our .NET code, however the leak is still present in the report designer.  I was also wondering if you could help further: because of the limits on the java memory process is there a way to ensure that a separate java process is started for each report that is loaded in my report viewers collection?  Essentially the desktop application that i have created uses a tab control to display each type report, so each tab goes through the following code when displaying a report and closing a tab:
    Is there a way to ensure that a different Java process is kicked off each time that I display a different report?  My current code in c# always uses the same Java process so the memory ramps up.  The code to load the report and then dispose of the report through closing the tab (and now the Java process) looks like this:

  • URGENT: Memory leak in UIX 2.1.7?????

    We are using UIX 2.1.7 and when searching for potential memory leaks we found a situation where UIX does not release some of our dataObjects after a page has been rendered. Analyzing the problem we found out that there are CompositeRenderingContext objects which seem to be reused but they always maintain a reference to the dataObjects that have been used when rendering the last page.
    The references are: CompositeRenderingContext holds CompositeRenderingContext holds Comp...... holds TableRenderingContext holds CustomDataObject
    In our case this is a very bad behaviour because some of our dataObjects are quite large and maintain references to lots of other objects, which can never be released (even after all users logged out) unless the RenderingContext releases our dataObjects.
    So my question:
    Are these observations correct?
    Is there a way to make the renderingContext release the dataObjects after rendering the page - or to explicitly say remove all unused renderingContext objects?
    How many such CompositeRenderingContext trees can the UIXFramework at most hold?
    Please help - this is very urgent as we have a customer that thinks the memory consumption of our application grows indefinitely and they cannot go into production with such a problem.

    Hi Guido,
    This was fixed in UIX 2.1.16 and UIX 2.2.0. This is not an unbounded memory leak; it will eventually peak. Patching to UIX 2.1.16 or later will resolve the problem. You'll have to contact your Oracle support team to get this release. I'm not sure how that works.
    JDeveloper 10g Preview has UIX 2.2.

  • Memory leak when running in database

    I am somewhat new to java and very new to java in the db. I just ran into a problem with what appears to be a memory leak. I have a substantial java program used to parse XML files. I developed this app in jDeveloper and for testing purposes created a method that would connect to the database so that I could run the app from jDeveloper instead of having to deploy it everytime i needed to run it. When deployed the application uses the existing connection to connect to the db.
    I am running Oracle 9i on a windows 2k machine.
    When I run the application through jDeveloper the javaw.exe process takes up roughly 20mb of RAM and doesn't increase. I also watched the oracle.exe process and there was little to no increase in the RAM that it was using.
    When deployed to a db and run through a java stored procedure the RAM used by the oracle.exe process sky rockets, jumping from 70mb to 139mb at about 2mb per second.
    Hopefully this will make some sense to someone as posting code would be somewhat difficult considering the size of the project. Is there something I'm missing? I've tried calling the garbage collector explicity but it has had no effect. I have made sure that all my cursors, statements, resultsets are closing. I have a number of Vecotors which are all being de-allocated(as far as i can tell). Are there any known issues with the garbage collector in a 9i DB?

    The size of oracle.exe is not an indication of how the Java VM GC works; so you are not comparing apples to apples. It'll be too long to explain here but in my upcoming book (see hereafter), I gave a detailled explanation of the various memory areas the Java VM uses and how these are GCed and also how you can meausre their size (not all, though).
    In short you want to use OracleRuntime methods such as
    OracleRuntime.getSessionSize(); --> get he current size of Sessionspace
    OracleRuntime.getNewspaceSize(); --> get he current size of Newspace

    struggle with similar issues and I found this great utility that
    will help you confirm if your webservice is returning the data
    correctly to Flex. I know you said it works in other applications
    but who knows if flex is calling it correctly etc. This utility is
    been the most amazing tool in helping me resolve web service

    Once you can confirm the data being returned is good you can
    try several things in flex. Try changing your result format to
    object or e4x etc. See how that plays out. Not sure where your
    tapping in to look at your debugger, you might want to catch it
    right at the result handler before converting to any collections. .

  • Jheadstart memory leak

    Fellow developers! My team has been using jheadstart 10.1.3.2.52 (jdeveloper 10.1.3.4) and jhs 11.1.1.2.29 (jdeveloper 11.1.1.2) extensively for some time now, for a number of applications. However some of the application definitions we have created have become quite large. When we generate from these definitions, we always encounter a huge memory leak on the ide's jvm. After two or three generations, java.lang.OutofMemoryError hits the jvm and we are forced to restart the jdeveloper. This problem is more noticeable on jheadstart 10.1.3.2.52 but we neither had the time nor the tools to memory profile the ide and quarantine the problem. Is it just me or is there anyone else out there who encounters the same memory leak issue?

  • ListOfValues Cancel button creates memory leak

    I believe one nuance of the listOfValues element (in an LOV page) gives rise to a memory leak. The examples and listOfValues documentation shows storing data needed by listOfValues events in the session. This is all fine and good if the user clicks on the "Select" button, as you get both a lovSelect and lovUpdate event to work with and clean out session data. But in the case of a user clicking the "Cancel" button, no event is fired, nor is a forward to another DataAction done. The window is simply closed. This strands all the data for the LOV (which could be quite sizable) in the user's session. You can't send this data on the request, because the LOV data must exist across several requests.
    Am I completely missing something? How does one clean out a user's session when the Cancel button is clicked on a listOfValues component?

    I am using JDeveloper 9.0.5.2. The restrictions of the project prevent using a newer version of JDeveloper. I am using ADF/Struts, and pure UIX (no JSPS).
    The functionality I am speaking of is the standard behavior of the <listOfValues> component (lov for short). The lov component generates events for various behaviors (lovFilter, lovUpdate, loveSelect, etc.). It also completely encapsulates the Cancel and Select buttons, so you have no direct access to those. In order to manage an lov web page (presumably launched from an <lovInput> component on a previous page), the events need access to a certain collection of data (data for the table, max size, starting row, selection, validity, etc.). Because use of the lov page will result in potentially multiple submits, the request is not a good place to store this data, as the data needs to persist for the life of the lov page.
    If you look at some of the lovInput/listOfValues examples on the OTN, you'll see that this data is persisted in the user's session. In and of itself, this is fine.
    The problem is introduced by the fact that the lov's Cancel button (or window close) does not generate any events, and you don't have direct access to those controls to add an event of your own. When the cancel button is clicked, the window just closes, and in the words of the lov documentation "no other events occur."
    This is very problematic -- your session is still stuffed full of data to support the lov. I am looking for a way to remove that data.

  • Memory leak when browsing through records

    Hello,
    I have a problem with any page containing the component related to each other on three or more levels. (1st level ADF Table, 2nd level ADF Table and 3rd level ADF Form)
    By navigating through the records of the first level, there is refreshment at other levels (using partial triggers), but suddenly there is loss of memory (memory leak) for components of type Select One Choice.
    Precisely, the problem appears when browsing another Show Detail Item in the same page.

    Hi,
    the screenshot does not indicate a memory leak. Memory leaks show by the server memory consumption that leads to slow performance or stale applications. Your issue seems to be different from that and doesn't really explain in the screen shots. If you have a support contract then customer support is the recommendation I like to give

  • Jheadstart 10.1.3 Memory Leak Problem

    Hello,
    I have encountered a re-produceable memory leak in ADF jheadstart in jdeveloper. The problems seems to be when I am running the application locally in the memory profiler, the memory usage keeps growing until the application halts with a outofmemoryexception. The main problem seems to be object references to com.sun.faces.ExpressionInfo$JSPExpressionString.<init> : line 192 under the char[] object when the application get loaded with 20 concurrent users for about 10 mins. I have tried adjusting both heap and max perm gen sizes higher and re-tested but it still seems to get hit with the outofmemoryexception after 10 mins longer duration.
    I followed the step-by-step jheadstart tutorial as described here:

    These are basic jheadstart pages with no customizations that are NOT scaling well in our load and performance tests.
    Here are details about my environment:

    Jheadstart 10.1.3
    Oracle 11g database
    I can provide a dump of the memory profiler statistics at the point of failure if it is necessary.

    We are using the jheadstart 10.1.3.3.81 build. The testing actions are very simple. I continuously load one page with concurrent users.
    I actually performed 2 load tests using a jheadstart generated version and a pure ADF drag-and-drop version and unfortunately they show the same behavior. This is the reason why I started two separate threads (one for jheadstart and one for pure ADF) hoping that someone else has encountered such issues.
    In both cases, at about 20 concurrent users using the oracle application testing suite, they both suffer from high memory usage of the char[] object and the Object[] objects which eventually ends with outofmemoryexception.
    In the jheadstart version, the problematic referring object from char[] is com.sun.faces.ExpressionInfo$JSPExpressionString.<init> : line 192.
    In the pure ADF version, the problematic referring object from char[] is indexjspx._jspService : line 989.
    According to these tests, it seems that the problem lies at the ADF/JSF layer but if you have any insights, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • How to determine memory leaks?

    I tried in XCODE, the RUN/ Start with Performance TOol / and tried out the various options. I was running my app and looking to see if it would report increasing memory use but it seemed to be looking at my total system (i was running under the simulator). In general what is the recommended procedure for determining memory leaks, which tool to use, and what tracing can i use?
    How does one look at the retain count of an object? are there system routines that have knonw leaks?

    You took the right path. Once instruments comes up select the Leaks tool. Turn off automatic leak detection. In your app, start off at some known state, do something, and come back to the known state and check for leaks. For instance start off in a view, do something that brings up another view then come back to the original view and check for leaks. Leaks will show you if you leaked. Since you took a very deterministic path then checked it should be straight forward to go to the code and find / fix the leaks. Leaks shows you where the code where the leak was generated.

  • Memory leak in JSpinner implementation (maybe others?)

    I am developing an application using Java and Swing, and have run into some problems with memory leaks. After examining the source code and making an example program (provided below), I can only come to the conclusion that there is a bug in the implementation of JSpinner in Sun Java 1.6.0_03.
    If one uses a custom model with the JSpinner, it attaches itself as a listener to the model. However, it never removes the listening connection, even if the model is changed. This causes the JSpinner to be kept in memory as long as the model exists, even if all other references to the component have been removed.
    An example program is available at http://eddie.dy.fi/~sampo/ModelTest.java . It is a simple swing program that has the JSpinner and two buttons, the first of which writes to stdout the listeners of the original model and the second changes the spinner model to a newly-created model. A sample output is below:

    In my case, I have an adaptor-model which provides a SpinnerModel interface to the actual data. The adaptor is implemented so that it listens to the underlying model only when it itself is being listened to. If the JComponents using the model were to remove the listening connections, it, too, would be automatically garbage-collected. However, since JSpinner does not remove the connections, the adaptor also continues to listen to the underlying model, and neither can be garbage-collected.
    All in all, the listener-connections seem to be a very easy place to make memory leaks in Java and especially in Swing. However, as I see it, it would be a simple matter to make everything work automatically with one simple rule: Listen to the models only when necessary.
    If a component is hidden (or alternatively has no contact to a parent JFrame or equivalent), it does not need to listen to the model and should remove the connections. When the component is again set visible (or connected to a frame) it can re-add the connections and re-read the current model values just as it does when initializing the component. Similarly, any adaptor-models should listen to the underlying model only when it itself is being listened to.
    If the components were implemented in this way, one could simply remove a component from the frame and throw it away, and automatically any listener-connections will be removed and it can be garbage-collected. Similarly any adaptor-models are collected when they are no longer in use.
    Changing the API implementation in this way would not require any changes to applications, as the only thing that changes are the listener-connections. Currently used separate connection-removing methods should still work, though they would be unnecessary any more. The API would look exactly the same from the view of an application programmer, only that she would not need to care about remnant listening connections. (As far as I can tell, the current API specification would allow the API to be implemented as described above, but it should of course require it to be implemented in such a way.)
    Am I missing something, or is there some valid reason why the API is not implemented like this?

    Another cognition: It's the following code, that causes the memory to be accumulated:

    ctx = NamingContextExtHelper.narrow(obj);For the first 4 calls to this code the memory usage of the nameservice is unchanged. From the 5th to the 8th call, it's increased by approx. 10KB per call. And thenceforward (beginning with the 9th call) it's increasing by approx. 10MB.
    What's going wrong here?

  • Memory Leaks   Unresponsive Mouse

    2009 8 core Mac Pro w/ 24 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 4870, and a SeriTek PCIe eSATA card (card only has drives connected when running a manual drive clone).  When running Toast 10 or Parallels 9, my RAM will fill up (I use a program called Menu Meters to monitor stuff).  This machine worked just fine under OS 10.9 and earlier - no issues like this at all.  ClamXAV will also completely fill the RAM up (the meter will be full green, instead of part green, then mostly grey when Toast or Parallels fills it up).  I have to use Terminal to purge it so that the machine is usable.
    The other thing that happens is that sometimes when the computer wakes up or I am in the middle of doing something, the mouse will still move, but the dock will not pop open and the left button the mouse doesn't respond.  The right button will open the right click menu, but will not respond normally at all.  I have tried a different Magic Mouse, but the problem is the same.
    I thought that it may be a problem with the factory RAM and the Kingston RAM not playing nicely together.  So I ran it with just the factory 8 GB and then ran it with the Kingston 16 GB - the problem persists no matter which RAM is installed.  All of the RAM also passes the memory tests in Rember and TechTool.
    So, I need to find out if someone thinks that maybe the bluetooth module may be going bad causing the mouse issues.  I also need to find out what is causing the memory leaks.  I followed the steps that someone gave on this site to boot into safe mode, repair permissions, reset PRAM, then reset SMC (or the other way around - I did it like they said to).  It did nothing to fix the problem.
    I need some guidance here.  As I stated early on, the machine worked perfectly with OS 10.9.  I have WAY too much software that I use, so doing a completely fresh install is out of the question - I don't have time to reload everything.  This problem is annoying and I know that I am not the only one having these issues.  Any input will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
