Memory management...enough Ram?

Coming off a thread below, I have 1 gig memory installed. Right now I am wondering if I have enough memory or is some process taking up memory? Going off this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918 , It say if the combination of free and inactive memory is very low you might need more memory. My free is 14.08mb My inactive is 296.44mb. Is this low?
I am only web surfing. I don't have any other programs open except Activity Monitor. I do have quite a few processes running but I don't know what is normal?

I'm not in front of my computer now so can't give you similar stats. But...
I originally had 1GB in my machine (the stock configuration). I have three accounts active through fast user switching (me plus wife and daughter). My daughter goes to websites that require obscure plugins so has to run Safari in Rosetta. This actually adds up to a lot of memory usage even though it is only web-browsing. As a result, I upgraded to 2GB. I wouldn't say that the difference was huge; I think of it as merely broviding a bit more breathing room and providing marginal improvements. (And, of course, I don't know if I've done anything since the upgrade that would have hit me badly if I only had 1GB of RAM. I have gone up to almost 1.5GB active memory occasionally though when I was editing a movie using iMovie and had iDVD and iPhoto plus the usual Mail, iChat, iTunes and Safari also open.)
The thing that gives me pause looking at your stats is the high number of pageouts - particularly as it is over your pageins. That suggests you might benefit (if only marginally) from more memory.
Some other questions: Do you find yourself closing programs a lot after you use them to free up memory? Do you not open them in the first place? Do you ever experience unexplained sluggish performance from your computer? Finally, can you spare $100-$200?

  • Are there suggestions for managing Multiple VMWare Fusion systems sharing files with a MacBook?  Suppose I have enough ram for 3 servers to share files.

Suppose I have enough ram for 2 or three VMWare fusion systems to that could benefit from file sharing.  Is it possible to configiure each VMWare funsion instance to have a common read only file share on my desktop and a common read/write area on on my desktop?
This would allow me to extend the power and mustle of my Mac Book Air, Retina Display system to its best advantage.  Whether native Mac processing or speciality linux or Windows systems as needed.
I am having trouble allowing more than one system to share the same read only and the same read/write areas so that software does the file locking and merge controls.  Even if these do not share a common read/write area, it would be truly handy for drive space management for them to share a common read only area.
    Thanks for your thoughtful input.

It really denpends on the os running in the vm and what the permissions are set to on those shares.
I run a few vms on both a mac at home and windows at work and all other computers in my home or at work can connect to the vms without any problems. Even multiple computer at the same time.
It also depends on how you have set the vm up for networking. If you are setting it up as nat, instead of bridged, that can also cause problems access it from multiple system. With nat the vm is on its own network branch.

  • Not enough Ram memory and cannot save due to a program error in photoshop cs6

Hi, I'm currently a beginner at photoshop cs6, and I've been using it since december last year, mostly to draw stuff and it has worked fine with few to no errors at all.
However, recently when I've been drawing, the same message keeps popping up over and over again "Can't use (tool) due to the computer not having enough ram" followed by either "cannot save due to program error" or, it just simply crashes.
This is obviously a something that worries me A LOT since at first, I thought that it was just a small error, but recently, it's been like this for several day s and I've been forced to re-start the computer (and photoshop) countless times... It really slows down my working progress and is VERY annoying to deal with.
As a beginner though, I don't really know how to fix this. I've been trying to look up some answers on this site, but I've just not found any answer yet...
I'm currently using photoshop cs6 that's up to date and I've got lots of memory left on my computer, so, I'm wondering. What exactly is the cause of this problem, and how can I fix it? Please answer as fast as you can.. I'm getting a bit desperate...
Oh, in case you're wondering, they're all saved as PSD files and every single one of them has about 15+ layers on them.

It would help if you could list a few things:
    1. Your operating system
    2. How much physical RAM do you actually have in your machine?
    3. Under Preferences > Performance, have you allocated "Scratch Disk(s)"?
    4. Also under Preferences > Performance > Memory Usage, what is the "Ideal Range" listed there, and what % is "Let Photoshop Use"?

  • Not enough RAM Memory

I've been using my Photoshop Elements 9 for a long time with no problems.  I use it to edit only and do not save or store photos in Elements nor do I use the organizer.  Today, while trying to open photos on my iMac with Elements for editing, I'm getting a message while on the Elements screen saying I don't have enough RAM Memory to complete the action.  I'm having no problem adding photos to the iMac, but can't open them in Elements.  Is this an Elements issue or an iMac issue?  Suggestions for a fix?

First try resetting the prefs: quit the editor, then relaunch it while holding down command+option+shift. Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.
If that doesn't do it, what is the situation with your computer? How much ram do you have? Does About this mac>more info indicate all the ram you thought you had?

  • Not enough Ram memory in photoshop -please help

    Hi
When I try to save any of my work in photoshop as a jpeg (not large files-even only 5Mb size ones) it comes up with an error message saying not enough Ram to save. IM using windows xp, I have 2.5Gigs of ram, 100Gigs free space on C drive and 100gigs free space on my other drive (J:).  I have checked the scratch disk prefernce and allocated 65% of ram to memory. I have also made my J: drive the number one scratch disk and C:drive as number 2. I have defragged my computer, and made  sure no other programs ar running at the same time when im using photoshop. i have checked for viruses and spyware...and it still wont save....can someone please help i dont no what else to so?

    What is a "scratch drive"?
How do I make sure there are not large temp files on it?
How do I make sure the RAM allocated to PS in PS Preferneces is not to high?
A "scratch drive" is one of your hard drives (C:\ if you only have one) that PS uses to write to as an extension of normal memory. It is needed even if you have lots of RAM.
In PS, if you go to Edit > Preferences > Performance, you will see not only the amount of RAM allocated to PS (which should be in the recommended "Ideal" range) but also which scratch disks are nominated.  With more than one hard drive, it is best not to have the system disk as scratch.
With PS closed, you can then look in Windows Explorer to check if there are any large temp files left on that drive and delete them.

  • Not Enough RAM? 12gb of Memory on iMac

I just started getting the "Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM)." error and now I cannot do anything in Photoshop CC at all. It started before the most recent update, after updating Photoshop it only got worse. I cant even get to the Preferences menu without the error coming up. I also noticed that when I open photoshop it will appear with a completely empty workspace.
Any suggestions here? I dont feel like it is because I dont have enough RAM all of a sudden.
    My iMac is
    27-inch Mid 2011
    3.4 GHz Intel
    12GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.9.2
    Thanks for your help

    looking at font issues

    disabling any system haxies
I went through steps 1-5. I didn't have any results until I tested the same tasks as a new apple user. Worked fine with a new user.
When I originally did step 2 I re-created my preferences (cmd+opt+shft while opening photoshop) instead of deleting them. I went back and removed some of the main preference files along with my workspaces (since I noticed the workspace being empty when starting photoshop). This has solved the problem so far. Thanks for the help.

How can I manage more RAM on my iPod Touch 4G ?
My iPod Touch 4G used to have 120MB of free RAM, but it suppost to have 256MB of RAM...120MB is totally not enough for the applications and the iOS to run smoothly...my applications always close in a sudden and the iOS is extremely lag...
I'm thinking is there anyway to manage of free more RAM on my iPod Touch 4G, I wanna free at least to 150MB...
I've tried iMemoryEnhancer, Mem Tool, Daemon Tools and Memory Free; but none of them work...I've also tried simply click on Free Memory on SBSettings...but all applications came out with the exact same result...120MB...
My iPod Touch 4G is running on iOS 4.3.1(8G4) and got 277 applications installed with around 10 Cydia tweaks..so please can anybody help me out ?

    try these
    1. quit apps on MT bar
    2. restart your ipod

  • OSX inactive memory management problems

On my 2010 Macbook Air 11" running OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, I have run into some major issues with memory management. This problem persists across both my Mac machines and multiple generations of OSX. I have a 2007 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro Running Lion (upgraded from Tiger) with 3 gb 667Mhz DDR2 RAM and my 2010 Air 1.4Ghz Core 2 Duo (Upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion) with 2gb 1067mhz DDR3 RAM. On both machines, for some time now, during normal usage; especially web browsing using Chrome and Safari (respectively); the inactive RAM on both machines will grow to consume around 30% of all RAM and force time consuming page outs to the mass storage drives on both machines. The Pro has a slower hard drive and the problem is the worst here, the air has a much faster SSD. I have found myself constantly having a window of Activity Monitor up on at least one of my desktops watching my RAM usage, using terminal to purge ram upwards of 10 times an hour to prevent costly page outs, especially on the Pro. I know Apple claims that inactive RAM is essentially free RAM that is temporarily storing recently used information for ease of access later and that it's supposed to be released as free memory when needed, but this obviously is not happening. Right now on my air my swap file is over 650Mb and I've seen it top 2Gb before. The air is exponentially better than the Pro due to the faster SSD, but I do notice substantial UI lag and a massive drop in fluidity as soon as my meager 2Gb is full and I start paging. The Pro is another story entirely, the entire system will essentially become unusable, having to wait several seconds for mouse clicks to even register. That's why I upgraded the stock 2Gb of RAM it comes with to 3Gb hoping that a 150% increase in RAM would help, but it just prolonged the inevitable. I still end up paging out just as bad across both systems if un checked. Even when I keep a close eye on memory usage and purge often, I still end up paging out because I'm not vigilant enough.
I have to limit my browsing to less than 5 tabs and keep my number of open programs less than 2 on both machines. My active and wired memory rarely seem to top 70%, meaning the rest gets taken by inactive, which isn't functioning as Apple claims. Even if my conclusions aobut what is happening under the hood are incorrect, something is going terribly wrong. I can't upgrade the RAM on my Air at all, and the RAM on my Pro is capped at 4Gb. I'm holding on upgrading because I don't think the excess hardware will solve this software memory problem. Whatever is happening is causing a serious drop in performance for me (yes I do know I have underpowered machines), but there has to be something I can do to speed performance. I've read about disabling the dynamic page file entirely, which just seems to crash the system when free memory is gone, and I've read about programs that claim to free memory. Those programs seem to work by taking a high priority in the process heigharchy of the OS and then proceeding to eat up large portions of RAM and releasing them as needed in an attempt to replicate the true intentions of inactive RAM, but I've heard of problems with this method as well. Does anyone have a viable solution? Monitoring my RAM usage myself and ensuring I don't end up paging out is costly, time consuming, annoying, and inefficient since I fail to catch the problem before I page if I get particularly busy. There is no other OS I've ever been acquainted with that has this problem, not any flavor of Linux, not even the dreaded windows. I seriously hope Apple can do something to manage this runaway memory problem. I'd like to be able to open more than 3 windows in Safari. I've had to purge 3 seperate times while writing this on my Air, and I now have 678 inactive memory, 741 inactive, 582 wired, and less than 14Mb free out of 2Gb with a growing swap at 680Mb. Each purge becomes less and less effective and the last one I did freed up only about 100Mb and it got eaten up again by inactive in less than 10 seconds. On my Air, the memory hog is Safari right now at 700Mb between the web content and flash player with only Facebook, youtube, and this Apple Supprt tab open. I have NO other applications running in the fore or background other than Activity Monitor and Terminal. On my Pro the memory hog is always kernel task, I use Chrome and Safari both. While the memory used by the browser does not usually take up the most substantial portion of the total used RAM out of any process, the more tabs I open, the more RAM I use. The browser is usually the second heaviest RAM hog to Kernel Task. So it seems that across the two machines there are two lsightly different manifestations of the same problem with the same results: massive performance drops and extremely annoying and costly page outs no matter the reason. I just want this problem to go away. I've used underpowered windows laptops that can open a dozen tabs in a heavier browser like IE or Firefox while using other programs like Word or Excel and more with no memory lag issues. There's no way in **** I could manage to open that many pages in a browser while using Pages and/or Numbers on either of my machines and expect reliable (swap free performance). This is just kind of sad in my opinion. Does anyone have a way to get my OSX machine running smooth so that I can remove the one thing that windows and Linux fan boys get the right to laugh at my Macs for?

    Hi Zephryl,
I was actually able to get an initial response from Sun on this a few months ago. However, the Sun Swing team has not followed up on a resolution for this pervasive problem, even though they noticed the same problem when running a test applet I had created for them. Apparently, I.E. is not releasing memory from the heap.
Below is a quote from a Sun rep. on this in an e-mail sent to me on Dec 4, 2002:
"I suspected the leak is in the native code because the # of handles and GDI objects keep increasing but no obvious Java objects are left behind in the Java heap during page switch."
So, until Sun and/or Microsoft work out a solution to this, anyone who uses I.E. 6 and applets for their UI seems to be in a lot of trouble.
As a note, trying to invoke the Garbage Collector does not do anything, but generally a very small amount of memory will be released (like maybe 5-10% of the memory allocated for the applet).
    Cheers!

  • Photoshop CS2 Not Enough RAM error message (wrong forum)

For some strange reason, my copy of Photoshop CS2 (macintosh) has started giving me an error message after program start up: could not complete your request because there is not enough RAM. I don't have to do anything. This message pops up about 1 minute after I start the program. The program works fine. I just close the window and go on. I haven't installed any new plug ins or changes to my prefs or hardware configuration. This just started for no apparent reason. It doesnt't refuse to work, it's just annoying. I've tried deleting the Photoshop prefs file and reinstalling the program from the master disc. Didn't help. I'm running OS 10.4.2 on a dual 1.8 gz processor mac with 4 gigs of RAM; Photoshop set to retain 60% of that. Anyone with any ideas about this, or should I just quit whining and go back to work...

  • Could not use the Brush tool because there is not enough RAM? Photoshop CS6?

That and I couldn't even save a project I was working because (There was not enough RAM)
My computer is running Windows 7 with 4 (3 usable) GB Ram, Pentium Dual Core; @ 2.00 Ghz
-I have allocated all possible RAM to CS6
-I set 6 scratch disks (the first two are 1TB external HDD)
-I fixed the file peeling so that there is quite a bit of it
    - I have Photoshop CS5 still installed (it works fine) as well as Elements 9, I don't know if that could be a problem or not.
I like the new features of CS6 especially the new 5000 px brush, but half the time I can't even use it because of this problem! What can I do to fix it?
I mostly use it for digital art so the pictures get to be at most 5000-3300 pixels. I get the problem mostly when I use brushes at 5000 px. CS5 works just fine and it uses the scratch disks I emplace, it seems as though CS6 doesn't even use them.

Obviously, you are running Win7 32-bit OS. Is that correct?
What are the full specs. of your Windows Virtual Memory, the Page File? What is its size, location, and is it static, or dynamically managed?
With a 32-bit OS, I would set the Page File to a fast, internal, physical HDD, set it to be statically managed, and size it to about 2.5x the installed RAM (~ 10GB in your case, and with a 32-bit OS).
That should provide more resources, and by being statically managed, save you CPU cycles too.
I also agree that you do NOT want to allocate all RAM to PS, as the OS needs some too. That will be counter-productive.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Getting "could not...because not enough (RAM) often

Hey guys, I think  my Photoshop CC 64 bit has something wrong with it. Maybe it was one of the updates I've done. I have windows 8, intel i5 4th gen, 16 gb ram and a junk graphic card at work. I just turned on my computer for the day and opened my file which is big, I've been working with files this size for years, 1.5gb and smaller. This file says it's 1.14gb in photoshop. I opened this file did a few things and now it won't save becase "not enough (RAM).
In my task manager it tells me my photoshop is using 563.2mb of memory. In photoshop I have 10,917mb allocated for it to use. I have 535BG of free space on my hard drive and I have an external USB SSD drive plugged in that I'm using as another scratch disk. This has been happening a lot over the last month. I haven't installed anything new and this morning the only things I have open are outlook, Photoshop, Lync (internal messenger for work) and word with one doc open. Photoshop has the one file open. I have the new 4th gen processor with GPU on it, not sure if I'm set up right for that or if that would even be related to this problem...any suggestions?

OK.  So you are stuck because you need to save your file, and can't close Photoshop or restart the computer until you have done so?
What do you see in Preferences > Performance?  How much of your 16Gb is available, and how much are you using?
Is that external SSD still marked as scratch space?  I believe that you have to reinstate external drives as Scratch space every time you restart the computer, unless those drives are mounted.
How much Scratch space is allocated?  You are going to need a huge amount of Scratch with a file that size.
What do you see in Task Manager > Performance tab?  How much RAM is used?
My best guess is that your problem is insufficient Scratch space, and that external drive is no longer allocated.  Check the above and come back.
    Good luck.

  • Applications quitting unexpectedly. Not enough RAM?

    Hey,
I have a Macbook 13" Aluminum. It's not a pro because I bought it during that small window of time where Apple hadn't given all the Aluminum Macbook's Pro status yet. Anyway, lately my applications have been quitting unexpectedly. These applications are those such as firefox and safari. I know web browsers take up the most RAM compared to other applications, except for Adobe products and other high CPU using software. These applications have started quitting when I started creating a disc image with Toast Titanium 10. I'm trying to back up a TV series I recently bought because I would like to keep a back up. The encoding is taking a lot of time. iFreeMem show most of my RAM is being taken up. Are the applications quitting because Toast is taking up too much RAM, so that the other applications don't have enough to run.
Any insight on this issue is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Snow Leopard uses nearly 1 GB of RAM. Running two browsers, Toast, and some Adobe software is just too much for the RAM you have available. This causes the virtual memory system to start using the hard drive swap file for additional RAM. This causes system slowdown and disk thrashing. The latter may easily lead to crashes or kernel panics.
You might consider using fewer applications concurrently. Also see:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Memory management in jelly bean xperia tablet s and performance issues

Most used apps are always in memory.
while recent apps few remain in memory untill memory is full.
this is how memory management is supose to work.
pretty much same as windows 7
but if this true then why are games lagging ?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3TwBlW5ibk
When their not enough memory games i suspect lagging.
if their not enough memory recent apps getting killed to free up ram.
     why does't this happen ?
And why are their apps in memory that i never use ?
tv sideview never use why its in memory ?
social life again never use again using memory
reader widget again using ram again never use at all
music unlimited again in memory never actualy use
Like i say'd most used apps are in memory all the time while rest is in cache.
But my most used apps are never in ram untill i start them
now if disabled lot apps my tablet become much faster respondsive.
Can sony plz plz plz plz fix memory management stop saying you did ?
You maybe reduced random shutdowns by like 90% or 95% perhaps even 99.99%
Before random shutdowns happend because of broken memory management, which obviously still broken as i see lag in games
sony apps use way to much ram, stop treating it like a computer with infinity amount of ram

I rooted my tablet, and when looking at the processor speed in SetCPU, Sony uses a governor for power management that makes the tablet run jagged... I changed the power governor to ondemand, and got MUCH better smoothness and performance, while not sacrificing my battery life. You should try it out, maybe that'll help with games and such.

  • EMac has poor memory management

I use an eMac and a G5. I would expect the G5 to be much faster than the eMac but here's a funny thing: I find that the G5 also manages memory much better than the eMac! For example, when I run OmniWeb for a long time on my eMac and really put it through its paces, loading up multiple pages and tabs, I find that OmniWeb starts running slower. Not surprising, but the rest of the computer starts running slower too! For example, creating a new folder may take several seconds.
Even stranger: after I quit all of my programs, the sluggishness continues. My eMac does not recover until I completely restart. Maybe OmniWeb has a memory leak or something, but this doesn't happen on the G5! I can put OmniWeb through its paces on the G5 and launch twice as many programs, including Photoshop, with no noticeable slowdown.
Now here's the weirdest thing of all: both computers have exactly the same amount of memory (768 MB) and both have plenty of free hard drive space (over 40 GB). All the memory on my eMac is Apple brand. I have even clean-reinstalled the OS on my eMac, to no avail.
Is it normal that memory management would be so much better on a G5 than an eMac?

The improvements in each OS generation in memory management involve swapping tasks in and out of memory more efficiently, not using less memory --- invariablly more memory is actually used (to do more tasks). It would've been clearer had I noted that each OS generation does more with the memory and places more stringent demands on the RAM timing. Memory chips tha were good enough under 10.1 failed when 10.2 came out; ditto with 10.3/10.2 and 10.4/10.3
See what Console and/or Activity Monitor tell you is using CPU cycles.

  • What is difference between 32 bit and 64 bit sql server memory management

What is difference between 32 bit and 64 bit sql server memory management
    Thanks
    Shashikala

This is the basic difference...check if helps:
A 32-bit CPU running 32-bit software (also known as the x86 platform) is so named because it is based on an architecture that can manipulate values that are up to 32 bits in length. This means that a 32-bit memory pointer can store a value between 0 and
4,294,967,295 to reference a memory address. This equates to a maximum addressable space of 4GB on 32-bit platforms
On the other hand 64-bit limit of 18,446,744,073,709,551,616, this number is so large that in memory/storage terminology it equates to 16 exabytes. You don’t come across that term very often, so to help understand the scale, here is the value converted to
    more commonly used measurements: 16 exabytes = 16,777,216 petabytes (16 million PB)➤ 17,179,869,184 terabytes (17 billion TB)➤ 17,592,186,044,416 gigabytes (17 trillion GB)➤
As you can see, it is significantly larger than the 4GB virtual address space usable in 32-bit systems; it’s so large in fact that any hardware capable of using it all is sadly restricted to the realm of science fiction. Because of this, processor manufacturers
decided to only implement a 44-bit address bus, which provides a virtual address space on 64-bit systems of 16TB. This was regarded as being more than enough address space for the foreseeable future and logically it’s split into an 8TB range for user mode
and 8TB for kernel mode. Each 64-bit process running on an x64 platform will be able to address up to 8TB of VAS.
