Memory module Installation error

Hi HP team,
My notebook is HP Pavilion dv6-6169er  P.N. QC800EA. Memory is actually 6GB (2GB+4GB). Once I tried to install memory modules myself. The problem is that the system does not boot when I turn on the laptop. CAPS LOCk button blinks 3 times and the screen appears to be black.  When I insert only one memory card, laptop boots well. This is valid for any combination of RAMs. Both RAMs and both slots work well (I verified this by inserting every single RAM to single slot). However, the laptop does not boot only when there is BOTH memory modules inserted. Please, could you help me fix this and install  both RAMs to get full 6GB?

Are both memory sticks the same brand and type?
Here is a great document on upgrading your RAM:

  • Portege 3500 - 512MB memory modules lead to error

    Hallo,
I tried to upgrade the memory in my P3500.
currently there is 1 256MB module installed in the slot beneath the keyboard.
    I purchased 2x 512MB SO-DIMM PC133 ram modules, but both lead to errors / BIOS-beeps. I tried different combinations:
    keyboard-slot: 512
    bottom-slot: empty
    --> long short
    keyboard-slot: empty
    bottom-slot: 512
    --> long short short
    keyboard-slot: 512
    bottom-slot: 256
    --> long short
    keyboard-slot: 256
    bottom-slot: 512
    --> long short short
    keyboard-slot: 512
    bottom-slot: 512
--> long short (pause) long short short
This sounds as if the bios refuses the 512mb modules
    I guess the beeps mean:
long short - keyboard-slot ram refusal
long short short - bottom-slot ram refusal
but according to the manual it should be possible to install 1 or 2 512mb modules. What am I doing wrong?
Do I need a BIOS update? (currently installed: "ACPI BIOS 1.20")
If only a new BIOS supports 512mb modules - is there a possbility to upgrade the bios from unix?
(the only BIOS download I found on the Toshiba support pages unfortunately just works for windows)
    Help would be much appreciated...

Yes, you can upgrade your 3500 up to 1024 mb memory ( 2 x 512 mb ) but only with the right modules
    You need *16 x 32 ( 16 chip architecture )* PC133 , 3,3v sdram modules ( 144 pins so-dimm )
I fear that your 512 mb modules are not compatible :-( you can count the chips on the module, there should be 8 chips on both sides of the module

  • Edge Technologies memory modules keep getting error codes on AHT test

I received a brand new replacement chip set (1GB/2 512s) directly from Edge Technologies. I ran an Apple Hardware Test on the machine just to make sure everything checked, and again received an error on the new chips. I tried all kinds of configurations and tests to make sure it wasn't an issue with the slots or the motherboard and kept getting an error on the same chips (the new one just sent me - item APLPMG5001GPC3200). Could it be a compatibility issue of some kind? I have 3 other sets of chips, all different manufacturers and they test fine every time.
I did notice they all have a "CL 3" code on them, where as the Edge brand does not. I've been in touch with tech support with Edge, and they seem to be stumped as well.

Hi Allan - Thanks for writing. I only have the original Apple Hardware Test version 2.1 disk, the same that originally came with the computer. I was wondering if I should try to get a newer version - or if one even exists that is compatible with my computer.
    Hi ratbastage;

  • K7T, memory modules and slowness

    Bonjour à tous.
That’s the first time I post… It’s hard for me to write in english…
My motherboard is K7T Turbo (MS-6330). I have two problems :
    1. I have three memory modules : 256 MB, 128 MB and 64 MB. All three are 133 MHz speed.
The memory test of  Norton Utilities indicates alwys an error at  an address about 356888576 (the address is not always the same, but always greater or equal than the one I wrote above.
 When just one of these three memory modules is used, the memory test is always OK (any module plugged in any socket)
 The test is also always OK with the two modules 256 an 64 MB,
 Also OK with the two modules 128 and 64 MB,
 But it is Always failed with the two modules 256 and 128 MB.
Here is my conclusion : my K7T Turbo has a problem « addressing the memory in the space around the address 356888576 and above ».
    356888576 is 1545B000 in hexadecimal. 256 MB + 128 MB = 18000000 (hexa) is the only combination of my memory modules that goes ahead 1545B000 (256 MB + 64 MB = 10400000)
Do you think my motherboard is guilty ?
    2. The Memory Bandwidth Benchmark of  SiSoftware Sandra 2002 gives me a result about 895 MB/s.
The result is the same with one, two or the three memory modules. And It seems to me very low.
Is it possible to obtain better ? Is it necessary to upgrade the BIOS (my version is 2.9) ?

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.

  • 3 memory modules?!?!

I'm currently using two 512MB memory modules in dual channel. i want to add more ram to my machine, but i want to keep the pieces that i currently use. so my question is, can i add one more module (1 GB) so that i will have a total of three modules (2GB), or adding the third module will cause instabilities and i should stick with even number of modules (2 or 4)?

it will probably not work in dual channel mode, if your cpu is smart enough to drop back to single channel mode it might work but you'll lose performance...
afaik there is no option to force single channel on that board, so if your system tries to run dual channel mode on that combination it's almost surely in for some memory errors...

  • Has the duff memory module screwed my MB

    I have a Neo2 Platimum AMD64 3200+ (standard heatsink)
    Memory is Corsair CMX512-3200XLPT (2.2.2.5)
    2x 512Mb twinX
Everything has been working fine for the last 2 weeks, but this morning the PC died
I was getting memory initialisation errors on the LED's
So I've now tested each memory module in turn in each of the dimm sockets.
                Skt1(P)      Skt2(G)     Skt3(P)    Skt4(G)
Dim 1      FAIL         WORK        FAIL        WORK
Dim 2      FAIL         FAIL           FAIL        FAIL
So It look's like the MB is broken and the memory too.
Could the memory module have stuffed up the Motherboard ?
The memory controller is on the CPU, could that have been affected ?
Has anyone else had this sort of problem ?
    Andy Cooper

Not having any spare DDR memory I purchaced 128Mb dimm (PC2700) and proceeded to test the slots.
It worked in skt 2 and 4 (same as the working corsair memory module).
So I definitly have a fault on the motherboard and it also looks like I have a fault on one of the corsair dimms.
So either the MB killed the dimm or visa versa.
Looks like 2 RMA's in the offing

  • H87M-P33 bios hangs (code 99) when both memory modules installed

    Hello everyone!
    MB: H87M-P33
    CPU: Intel Core I5-4670
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 2x4GB kit 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 1.5V (CML8GX3M2A1600C9B)
    PSU: Corsair CX500
Besides power button, nothing else is connected.
I'm building a brand new system. It boots with either module from the memory kit in either slot, but bios hangs (code 99) when BOTH memory modules are installed.
I tried to update bios to v2.1, but still won't boot with both modules installed.
Then I looked on the global site and found v2.2 bios for this board, which states "- Improved memory compatibility." and released on 2013-08-19, which is fairly recently. I tried to download it from download site (US, EU, CHN) but all sites give 404 error (file not found) to me.

It boots fine with a single stick in either slot. I tried flashing the attached beta bios via UEFI interface (choose the option with ME) and it updated. It still won't work if both slots are filled, works fine if either of dimm slots is filled with either stick from the kit.
ADD: I also tried putting whole RAM kit in my main machine and it works, so RAM isn't faulty.
Use a single RAM module, boot up, access the BIOS and be sure XMP is disabled.
Set the timings to 9-9-9-24, the voltage to 1.55-1.60V and the speed to 1333MHz.
Save the settings, shut down, insert the 2nd RAM module and see if it works.

  • Mixing memory modules on Westmere

    Dear Hardware gurus,
I have a 12-Cores Westmere. Do you know is it possible to mix different memory modules on it, namely:
    6x1 Gb 1330Mhz
    +
    2x4 Gb 1066Mhz
and if yes, in which configuration?
Thanks a lot for any comment!

    Kappy, thanks for the note.
I am actually going to order some more 1333 modules, but just for the short time I have to work with what I have currently (see my original post).
As I posted above, I tried a bit already to combine the modules and Mac doesn't boot
Can you suggest a configuration, which will work?

  • Memory modules and hard drive not recognized

I removed and reinserted the factory installed Satellite L505D-LS5007 laptop hard drive and memory modules just as practice for installing a hard drive upgrade and an 8GB memory upgrade. The problem is obviously with the memory and not with the hard drive.
After the first practice try, one memory module was recognized. Also for a few seconds after the first practice try, I ran the PC with the battery installed, but no memory installed. I did not look in the User's Guide first to see that I should have removed the battery before removing the memory.
Now the System Indicator Lights for the HDD Activity and Memory Card Reader do not light up. The PC turns on and the display is solid black with no messages.
Before buying new memory modules, what possible ways might there be to get the PC to recognize the factory installed memory modules and hard drive again?

  • Memory modules for Msi Big Bang trinergy

    Hey forum,
i want to buy some memory modules for my trinergy mobo because the ones i had earlier also proved to be incompatible. I would like to ask you if there are any memory modules besides the ones recommended from the MSI site concerning my mobo. I am looking for a 2x2 gb ram kit with a heat dispenser so it can work around 1600mHz. Thank you in advance
P.S Is the list on the site the only one? i mean are there any updated versions of it with more high end memory modules tested?

Ideally you would provide us with your fullsystem specs first >>Posting Guide<<
From a memory perspective, the reason these modules have heatspreaders is mostly due to marketing and to impress the potential buyers. The secondary reason is that most manufacturers sell you overvolted and overclocked 1066 or 1333 chips on a 1600 marketed module that needs 1,65V instead of the standard 1,5V. Your memory controller is part of the CPU and natively only supports 1333 at 1,5V.
If you really insist, then at least get yourself a 1600 kit that does this speed at 1,5V. One of the modules that seem to work well are the CMZ4GX3M2A1600C9 from Corsair. From a user perspective, the mem modules from Crucial that you see in my signature come highly recommended as they have been proven to work on the P55 platform whenever used.

Yes, you can do this. You will get a slight performance hit on video, but that will be more than offset 99% of the time by the extra RAM reducing overloading of the Virtual Memory system.
However, it is enough work to replace the RAM and RAM is cheap enough, that I'd recommend putting in two matched 1 Gig modules instead.
