Memory on computer??

How can i find out or look up how much memory is used and how much memory I
have left on my MacBook Pro computer??
And if, I am running low on memory on my computer how can I improve that??
Do I need to delete a few things?? check for viruses??? ect.

I contacted apple store, and they gave solution which ask you to restart to safe mode.
Shelley:
For starting the Mac in safe mode, we will want to shut it down first, then wait for ten seconds.
Shelley:
Press the power button to start your Mac up, and hold down the Shift Key just as soon as you hear the Startup tone, but not before the tone...
Shelley:
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator, which should look like a spinning gear or progress bar along the bottom of your screen.
Shelley:
Allow your Mac to finish starting up normally, although it may take a little longer than usual.
Shelley:
Log in to your account, as you would normally. Next, log out of your account and shut down, then restart normally.

  • Memory problems: computer freezes on heavy memory usage

Ever since I changed the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro (I installed a Seagate Barracuda 1Tb disk), I have the following problem:
Whenever an application needs a lot of memory (for example Parallels installing a new Windows system, or Acrobat Pro optimizing a big PDF file), the computer progressively freezes. What I mean by freezing is that I can still move the mouse cursor, but clicking has no effect, and there is no interaction whatsoever with the GUI. Even the clock on the menu bar stops.
I never had the problem before. I guess that under normal conditions the Finder will always keep a few Mb of RAM for its own use. After all I have 4Gb of RAM installed.
Is there some way I can prevent the computer from freezing? Has this something to do with VM? Ever since I changed the hard disk, this problem happens once or twice every day, and the only solution is to force a restart, losing all my work…
Thanks in advance for any advice…

First, do not assign more than half your available RAM to a VM. It's best to let the VM software's configuration to select the amount used by its defaults.
Second, watch how many concurrent applications you attempt to use. Monitor your memory usage in Activity Monitor. If the Available RAM (Inactive RAM plus Free RAM) is low and Free RAM is near zero, then you have too many concurrent applications running. This forces the system to start using the disk-based virtual memory file. With too many apps swapping into the vm file disk thrashing will occur that ultimately can lead to the computer appearing to freeze up or to actually freeze up.
Of course your alternative is to install more RAM if in fact you are over-taxing what you have now. You may find the following helpful reading:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Memory upgrade - computer won't come on

    Hi all,
Last week I put a new battery in my MacBook and noticed that one of those three screws by the memory slots was loose. I tried to tighten it but it (or perhaps the hole) was apparently stripped as it did not work. I was able to get the battery in by holding it down and the computer worked fine. Then my memory upgrade arrived and after getting the right screwdriver I was able to unscrew everything, put the new memory in, and put that plate back on. . . except that one screw would not go back in. I was again able to get the battery in by holding that plate down, but the computer would not turn on. The power light just kept blinking, even when I used the power cord. Not knowing if my computer failed to recognize the new memory, I put the old memory back in, but the computer is dead. It seems to power on but the screen is dark. I am using my husband's old computer.
Do you think it's an issue with the memory? I'm fairly sure I put it in correctly, and didn't think that would affect whether or not the machine even came on. My own thought is that without that stupid screw down tight something is not connecting anymore, and that I will have to take it to the Apple Store to get it fixed. Does that sound right and if so - any idea what it will cost? Should I just get a new computer?? I attempted to do my own upgrade to save money (Apple Store told me $180 to install 2MB!!) but it's looking like that has backfired.
    Thanks so much!
    ~Gina

Thanks for your help. Yes, it is a Core Duo MB. It is dead once again so I'm afraid I can't tell you anything besides the fact that I purchased it in June, 2006 so I think it is a first generation machine.
Like I said previously, I did get it to boot but it only recognized one of my old 256MB cards, and I don't know which slot. I tried reseating and switching them and pushing them in as much as I could but it's totally not coming on now. This is the product I purchased:
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partsinfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack= http://www.kingston.com&ktcpartno=KTA-MB667K2/2G
I suspect, though, that something else is going on since the old cards don't seem to work anymore. Is it the l-bracket not screwing in all the way? Could a ribbon cable be loose (I saw this on the Kingston FAQ) Does an entire slot need to be repaired? Should I even bother calling Kingston Tech Support? Is there anything else I can do before taking it to the Apple Store?
    Thanks again!
    ~Gina

  • Software for copying phone memory to computer

I have a 2-year-old pearl 8100. I need to copy my address book to my computer. I lost the software that came with the phone. Which software do I need? When I go to the Blackberry website it asks me which software version I need and I have absolutely no idea. All I need to do is make a copy of what's on my phone memory and save it on my computer. Exactly which software do I need. thanks

    Desktop Manager 5.0.0 B28 English
once installed if you do a backup, this will make a complete backup of your databases. However only readable if restored back to a BB.
if you want to copy your address book to a a viewable source you will need to use syncronize and sync it with outlook, or outlook express.

  • Photoshop using too much memory, freezing computer

Over the past month Photoshop has become a nightmare to work with.
I am using CS6 because I have never been able to get CC to install. My computer specs:
    Lenova Thinkpad
i7-3632 CPU with 16 Gb ram running Win 7 Pro x64. The graphics card is the Intel HD Graphics 4000.
I have used Photoshop since 1996, so am a seasoned user. These problems began about 1 month ago and I suspect may be related to the fact that one of the 2 CC memberships associated with my account was about to expire. (I wonder if there is something internal increasing checks of licensing given the upcoming and now passed expiration.) It also may be related to whatever underlying problem makes it impossible for me to update Photoshop CS6 or install Photoshop CC from the creative cloud. I have tried suggested solutions and short of uninstalling/reinstalling everything nothing has worked.
What I noticed first was that PS would take a long time to open, affecting other programs during the process. Music playing in iTunes would "skip" like an old record, with several pauses in the music while PS opened or saved a file.
When I checked the task manager, PS was almost 1Gb ram to view a single jpg. It seems like PS is not releasing memory when images are closed. For example, I just had 3 files open and closed all but a 56Kb jpb - yet PS is still using 1.142 Gb of ram. If I close PS and reopen those files, I see a more expected ram usage.
The problems are not consistent, which is odd. For example, opening PS will be okay one time and open in seconds, then it will take minutes another time and freeze my computer. (Which is why I suspected it may be connected to a CC license check routine.)
The biggest problem is that PS is also causing problems with other programs, esp. Microsoft office programs - that only occur when PS is running.
Does anyone have any idea of why this is suddenly a problem and what I can do to fix it? I am literally at the point of looking for and switching to another program if I can't get this fixed.
    Thanks - Julie

Thank JJMack - that has helped me get closer to the problem.
I opened the resource monitor and you can see a screenshot of what is going on when I try to save a simple, 9 Kb graphic. (I'm saving an RGB JPG, not a PNG or animated GIF file. Doing anything complex / memory intensive than saving or simple edits in PS is almost impossible.)
As you can see from the screencap below, when I save (it doesn't make a difference if it is save vs. save to web or a network or local drive) Photoshop becomes unresponsive. (From past experiences, if I try to switch to a non-Adobe program it will also freeze and sometimes crash.) When PS becomes unresponsive, the NT Kernel & System immediately goes to the top of the list and uses 200+ threads.
From there Photoshop will typically be frozen for about a minute, then will recover and take another minute or two to finish the save. At that point PS is okay, but the rest of the computer is still frozen with CPU oscillating up to almost 100%.
As soon as the NT Kernel & System settles down, everything is back to normal again (as long as I haven't used other programs, which in one case required a hard reboot.)
It is pretty clear the problem is rooted in Adobe / Window 7 as I only have this problem with Adobe programs. (Illustrator isn't as bad, but I've had problems with it as well.)
The question is: How do I fix this, as it is killing my ability to work?
    Thanks! Julie

  • Low Memory Error (Computer also reporting that my hard drive is almost filled)

Is there a diagnostic tool or something else I can do to find out why I'm getting an low memory error?
    I have a Compaq Presario CQ60. I have 4.0GB of RAM and a 2.0 GHZ processor.
I only have 5GB left on my hard drive. That can't be right!  The drive is 285 GB total. What told me that I had a problem was when I removed 40GB of music that I ripped from my CD collection. I moved it off. It cleared up room on my HD until i rebooted it a few times. Then all 40GB were mysteriously gone.  Program Files is 17.0 GB, MyDocuments 4.88GB, Music 5GB, Pictures 900MB, Videos 400 MB.  Downloads folder 1.14GB. When i run Defrag from Windows 7 Home Premium, it fails.
I can't believe I've run out of memory or hard drive space. I think something else is going on. I've been using this computer for years and what I'm doing now is no where near as intense as I've done in the past.
Is there a tool i can download and run? At one time, my computer did restart and do a check on the Hard Drive sectors but it returned no errors.  I don't know what to do.

Some very good tips here- includes tools to view what is using hdd space. (just be sure to ignore the ads)

  • Sync interal memory to computer

OK I understand that I posted a subject that is frequent but I feel like my problem is different enough that I need to post, that being said, here we go
First, I do not have a media card in my black berry 8310,therefore,  I use the internal memory for pictures and stuff. When I plug my blackberry into the computer it recognizes that something was plugged into it but  when I go to Computer to access the D: drive, my removable drive, the computer tells me to plug in a removable disk, yes whilst my blackberry is already plugged in, very frustrating. i dont understand why. Also i do not get a message on my phone to turn the mass storage on or off, i went to options and i have it on and tell my blackberry to prompt me also.
Second, if the first problem can be resolved and my computer can recognize my blackberry as a storage device, is it possible to recover any lost pictures off of my internal memory with recovery software?
THank you all, i hope to hear for you all soon

Hi and welcome to the forums!
A couple of places for you to visit: Blackberry 101    Tips & Tricks
The pc will not see your BB as a mass storage device unless you have a media card installed.  The size care you can use is determined by the OS you are running on your BB:  Media Card Capacity
Once you have a card installed go to options-media card
    Settings should be:
    Media Card Support: On
    Encryption Mode: None
    Mass Storage Mode Support: On
Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected: Yes
Once enabled, when you connect your BB via usb, a windows explorer will open and show your device as another drive on your pc. You can then just drag 'n drop your pics, music, videos, docs between your BB and pc.
Using internal device memory for storage is not a good idea as there isn't very much on the 8300 series devices and you want to leave what is available for your device to operate correctly.
When you have your media card installed, you can move your files from device memory to the respective folders on your card.  Go to media-menu key-explore and move the files to your card.  If you cannot find your pics by exploring device memory in this manner you have probably lost them as the device uses this memory to operate.
Happy to have you here!   Let us know how it goes.

  • Have a problem with full memory in computer

have a problem in computer because always memory full

Somehow you are getting material from Disk Utility...you should be seeing an image like this:
This shows the amount of memory installed and More Info will take you to the a window that allows you to select the System Report to get the model number of your computer.
What Mac OS X version are you using?

  • FlashBuilder 4.7 is appropriating more and more memory until computer becomes non-functional.

I've been monitoring resources and watching it climb climb climb till it's over 1.5gb while MINIMIZED and inactive.
Using Win 7 Enterprise Sp1 64-bit on Quad-core i5 iMac with 8gb of physical memory.

Anyone have any idea? I see more threads like these (from 2010 !!!)
Apple, why will you not fix this?

  • Added new memory, now computer won't boot at all

    Hello
I added a new pair of 2*8GB Coursair memory along with my old memory which was 2*2GB, for a total of 20GB Ram. It was working fine for a day (except one random restart), but got steadily worse. Yesterday iMac was shutting and restarting more frequently. I decided to remove the old pair thinking the   different brands may be causing a disturbance. I did, but the restarting didn't stop. I removed them again to try put it back more firmly or something, that was the last time my iMac booted. It will show the apple logo, then some short loading bar will come up, then it would promprtly shut down.
I tried putting back my original RAM and it still wouldn't boot. Tried them individually, new old, different slots, nothing worked.
So I guess I damaged my memory slots or all my RAM modules stopped working. Any ideas what to do next? I've already requested a replacement for the new RAM.
    Some extra info:
-Old ram was running at 1333Hz and new one was 1666Hz, I tried them together .
-First time I tried to remove RAM, I tried to pluck them out with my hands by leveraging the sides with a small screw driver. Realised I had to pull the black thing later on. Don't think I applied too much force though.

Well, you should not mix different specs RAM. And, it's best to purchase RAM for the very finicky Macs from either OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial which guarantee the RAM to be Mac compatible and offer a lifetime warranty.
I would guess that the new incorrect spec RAM is the problem. Additionally, you might have damaged the slots inadvertantly.
You might need to take it to your nearest Genius Bar for a free evaluation. Additionally, I would return the RAM as not being compatible.

  • Add memory to computer

    Can you add memory

Yes, and it is an easy, do-it-yourself job.
The Mid 2007 iMac can "officially" take up to 4GB RAM by installing a 2GB module in each of its two RAM slots. Unofficially, it can take advantage of newer 4GB RAM modules introduced after its specs were written. You can install one 4GB and one 2GB for a max of 6GB.
Hardware limitations prevent using any more that 6GB. Also, the newer 4GB modules are rather expensive so you need to ask if it is worth it.
How much RAM is currently installed? Normally, iMacs of that period shipped with RAM in both slots--for your model, either two 512MB modules or two 1GB sticks. Either way, you remove the old RAM and replace it with larger modules.
This is the proper RAM for a Mid 2007 iMac 24" from the RAM vendor I've used for over a decade when buying for any Mac:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo
(I buy their "house brand" and never had a problem)
and here are some installation videos from the same vendor:

  • I'm currently having trouble understanding why my Inactive Memory (Displayed in Activity Manager) is running at such a high rate.

I'm using Quicktime Player to export movies. I'm just bothered by the fact that is says "Inactive" rather than "Active". Can someone please explain to me why I have such low Free Memory?
    Computer Specifications:
    iMac i7 3.4Ghz
    RAM: 16GB DDR3
    1TB HDD
    AMD Radeon 6970m 1GB

Inactive Memory is memory which has been allocated  to applications which were previously, but no longer, using it. It remains available to them on a "first call" basis. In theory, it should be readily available to other applications on demand, but in practice it doesn't seem to work this way.
Looking at Page outs and Swap used down at the bottom -- and I won't go into any details right now -- it looks like you are low on RAM, but maybe not critically, and could use more. Either that or run fewer memory intensive applications concurrently.
One (little known) way to regain some of that Inactive memory to Free memory, which right now on your system is quite low and will end up causing your Mac to run sluggishly or freeze it completely, is to open Disk Utility in Utilities and run repair Permissions. Another way is to simply restart. If you want to read more on memory

    I just bought
    new memory for upgrade.
    My old was: 2 X 512MB. PC2 5300 DDR2 667
    The new: 2 X 2GB. PC2 5300 DDR2 667.
When I installed the new memory the computer is turn on, i can enter to bios ( i see that it reconized 4gb)
but i can't boot the computer after the bios. the system stuck.
    I can only boot the computer with 1 X 2GB , and 1 X 512MB (the old memory),
and also the 2GB Sim must be in the upper slot, if not it will not boot.
So now the system is running with 2.5GB...
    what can be the issue?
btw: I upgraded the bios to new one. V 3.03
    Thanks,
    Eli.

HE meant to say this software is usefull for testing whether the memory chips are still "good" for running (.i.e. were not damaged by static electricity while manually handled)
if the test shows that they are not good, then buy new one
if opposite, then something is wrong with your laptop (double check on ther laptop anyway)
