Memory on ESXI 5.1

Dear All,
my Lab ESXI has 16GB memory and I7 Processor, however i run out of memory and my MOBO doesnt support more than 16GB,
i was thinking to buy SSD HDD to use it as memory,
is this possibly on ESXI ? if yes how can i configure it ?

You could buy an SSD and use it as cache/page file. ESXi Host > Configuration > Under Software, Host Cache Configuration.

LOAD BALANCING VM'S in a Cluster

Hi Guys,
I have 2 ESXi 5.5 in a cluster with HA and DRS Enabled .
One of the ESxi in the cluster is heavily loaded although it has enough ram and storage to create 2-3 VM's but not more than that.
Other ESXi is running just 3 VM's and has enough ram and storage.
Also i have certain constraints as well .
There is no shared Datastore .Both the ESXi have there own datastore thereby VMotion not an option.
All i want whenever There is a request to create VM's in Cluster , VM should be created on the ESXi with Less load (which has only 3 VM's Running).
I know this can be achieved by DRS but i believe for DRS there should be a shared datastore which i don't have.
I know this is a silly question but any answers will be appreciated.
Where i can find to configure memory of ESXi in a Cluster..If threshold is achieved ..Vm's will be created on new ESXi.

I am aware of EVC but it does not solve the Purpose. EVC will change host and datastore of an existing VM which has memory constraints on a particular
ESXI. It wont stop Creating VM on that Particular ESXi which is running on high load.
All i want Cluster to choose ESXi which has less load at the time of VM creation .Can you please tell me are there any memory threshold options in a cluster..i am not able to find them?.
Yes i will be deploying via vCO ..can you please tell me where and how can i script the Workload.

I am using AMD PHENOM II 1055 125w CPU on MSI 785GM-E51. Memory Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1600 x4
I can put memory in slot 1 and 3 it will boot fine.
If I install DDR3 in slot 1 and 2 the system will not boot. If I full populate all the memory slots it will not boot
In both scenario's after the system does not boot and go back to just using slots 1 and 3 the system boot with CMOS checksum error and need to go in to BIOS setup. All the changes need to be made again, saved and exit and it reboots fine.
I have already attempted to setup the memory speed to 1333 and 1066 with no luck. Any ideas?

CUCM 8.6, UnityCon 8.6 and Presence 8.6 on ESXi 5 C200 web interface lag

When trying to bring up any web interfaces or even vSphere it is so slow as to also not be usable.. Brand new install on 2 C200 UCS servers.
Before you ask. Yes LRO is disabled according to Cisco's instructions and confirmed. I have CUCM and Presence on one NIC and Unity Con by itself on the other NIC.
Restarting Tomcat does nothing to help..
Even restarting the entire cluster does nothing to help..
All 6 machine Pubs and Subs of each application type were created in ESXi 5 with .ova files and unchanged.

What does RTMT or CLI show about CPU memory and process usage?
Probably should not affect GUI but is correct VMware tools installed as well?
Once you verify apps check what VMware says about performance.
What size ovas did you use? Are you over subscribed?
How long have you waited? Is it just cups performing sync and hogging resources for example

C240 BIOS Settings and ESXi - AES, SSE

Hello,
I'm currently converting from an IBM server to a Cisco C240M3, (2) 2697 v2 CPU's, 128G Memory, BIOS 1.5.3b.0..... (all new from Cisco, just setting it up)
ESXi is installed on both machines and is working, as is vCenter for both.
When I try to copy my appliances from the IBM to the C240, I get the errors shown on the attachment. The only advice VMWare has is 'see your system provider'
I looked in the BIOS, searched on Cisco.com and the internet and did not find any information about enabling AES SSE (or having them shown to the OS underneath). I did look at the specs for the 2697 v2 processors and they support everything they seem to need.
Is there a BIOS option to specifically enable the options I need that were on the IBM server such that I can just copy my appliances from the IBM to the Cisco? This is what I have done in the past and it saves a ton of time.

This have been a real struggle. One star less to MSI for this one.

SQL Server 2005 Memory Explosions

We have the following configuration:
ESXi 5.1.0 running on three clustered Dell 710 servers
vCenter Server 5.1.0
The clustered servers have a total of 88G of RAM
SQL Server 2005 x86 running on a virtual Server 2008 R2 x64. All databases run fine for several days with memory usage seeming at ~25%. Suddenly, the memory consumption
shoots up to ~98% and we have to reboot the server. This is based on information from the task manager and the measurements in vSphere Client. I understand that the task manager is not an accurate measurement when AWE is active but that’s the best I’ve got
at the moment.
Here's what we've done thus far:
Looked through the logs on the SQL Server and found the following:
In the System log, Resource-Exhaustion-Detected appeared at the same time but the highest memory consumption was services.exe at 125MB. Doesn’t seem to be the culprit.
In the Applications log, started getting MSSQLSERVER errors indicating ‘The Server was unable to load the SSL provider needed to login.’ These errors persisted through the downtime.
In the SQL Server Log File Viewer, we see the following errors, though I’m not sure that they are at all related:
A significant part of sql server process memory has been paged out. This may result in a performance degradation. Duration: 0 seconds. Working set (KB): 4464, committed (KB)
66976, memory utilization: 6%
(About 4.5 hours later) Warning: the available page file has dropped below 4Mb. It is at this point – seemingly – that the memory usage has jumped up to near 100%.
The virtual server has 8G of RAM allocated. However, within the vSphere Client, the Memory Granted and the Memory Consumed seem to be at the same value…meaning that
the consumed value seems to be at 100% under normal operating conditions. Not sure why that is.
If anyone has any recommendations or areas to look, we would certainly appreciate your assistance! Thanks in advance.

We are getting a few other errors in the SQL Log that has given me some concern:

I run a query SELECT SERVERPROPERTY(‘edition’); and it shows ‘Standard Edition’ rather than ‘Standard Edition (64-bit).’
We are using Windows Server 2008 R2. I don’t believe that there was an x86 version released but I could be wrong.
I’ve actually looked at enabling the LPIM but we are on a domain that we have no control over and there are GPOs that make it very difficult if not impossible to gpedit but that is something
we can certainly look into with the domain owners if you think it might help.
I just ran the following script in SQL:

The response is name – awe enabled, minimum – 0, maximum – 1, config_value – 0, run_value – 0
There is no third party software on this server.
The Max Server Memory is set to 5GM

Exchange 2010 Std. on Esxi 5.0 (suggestions for deployment)

Dear Experts,
Soon we will be starting process of moving from E2k3 to E2k10 and it is going to be on Esxi 5.0. In this regard, I have concerns are there some guidelines to follow for it exchange 2010 virtualization?
- How much size HDD when server holding , HUB, CAS and mailbox role?
- The above three roles on one virtual server are OK?
- Memory assignment for the virtual server
- The exchange DB should be where, on a RDM or as a second HDD to the virtual machine like a D:\ drive
- Edge transport should be on seperate virtual server?
- Backup is possible of exchange DB is on a RDM ?
Any other aspects since it is first time for us going for Exchange virtualization. I found vmware document for this E2k10, but any resource with easy understanding steps and to follow.
If more details are needed from my side, please let me know

It's very difficult to answer your questions without some context about your environment. When it comes to Exchange 2010 there really are no "generic" sizing guidelines. For example, there really isn't any rule of thumb to say that for 5,000 users you need xx amount of vCPU and yy amount of memory per server. You'll need to do some math from your environment to figure that out.
Thankfully Microsoft provides all of the numbers you'll need to figure out how much CPU and memory you'll need to size your servers. This link does a good job of taking you through some of the math you'll need to understand:

In addition, Microsoft makes a calculator that you can use to plug in your requirements and it will produce the required amount of CPU and memory for your Exchange environment. Take a look here:

To answer your other questions:
- Yes, you can combine the Hub Transport, Client Access, and Mailbox Server roles on the same virtual machine. You'll need to size for it so that you can ensure proper performance. See here for more info: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd298121.aspx
- The Exchange databases can either be on an RDM or on a VMDK attached to the virtual machine. It comes down to your requirements and if you're using a SAN based snapshot, backup, or replication tool. If you're not then I would stick wtih VMDK files.
- The Edge Transport server is designed to be at the network perimeter and not joined to your domain. You cannot combine it with other Exchange roles so you'll need to deploy it on a separate virtual machine.
I hope this helps. Read the Microsoft links to get an idea of how to size your environment based on your organization's requirements and that should give you a good start.

How to launch USB-based ESXi 5.1U2 installer on IBM x3200 M3 (7328) Tower Server

I have an existing server with ESXi running. I want to wipe all settings and update ESXi.
I have the ESXi 5.1U2 iso written to a USB stick.
Selecting it in the server's boot settings, it just starts booting the existing installed ESXi OS.
Same thing when I go into BIOS boot manager, tell it to boot from file, browse USB>ESXi>...select the x64 file. It just launches the existing installed OS.

Memory dump in virtual machine

One of our VMs is restarting frequently and is using a Windows Server 2012 R2.
From the screenshot it have memory dump.
Is this a hardware related issue even though it happened on a virtual environment?
Will we be able to get cause of error if we try using any memory checking tools on the virtual environment? or should it be done on the ESXI host level (physical server)?

It's ok, I having health hardware status for the server in the HP SIM 7.3 by wbem with Custom HP Image ESXi 5.5 onboard by wbem .

Have now solved it myself:
1) Create system restore point
2) Uninstall mobile broadband driver and centrino ultimate-N in device manager, but keep files
3) Reboot
4) Lenovo access connections automatically connects to mobile broadband. It's then just a matter of going in there and connecting to wifi also.
Everything is working beautifully now, and switching between wifi and mobile automatically. I think it was just corrupted TCP/IP settings in one or both adaptors.

CUCM on ESXi install

Hello,
I've made a new installation of CUCM 8.6 on VM with ova template in ESXi 5.0 host. Is it normally that on Xeon 5410 host with 2 allocated cores and 2gb RAM installation process takes veery long time? Even pre-install checksum validation takes about 10-20 minutes. All process takes about 2,5 hours. But the strange thing is that after succesfull installation CUCM works quite slow. Even the first start freezes on "Loading, please wait" screen for about 10-14 seconds. And that screen freezes every time you log in. Former employee that was working with telephony have installed cucm 8.5 on another VM and it runs much faster. Even on less hardware resources.
Did I miss something in installation? Maybe there is some pre-install configuration of VM needed to run cucm faster? Guy who installed 8.5 doesn't remember anything about this. In cucm on VM installation guide i haven't seen any advice.

Do you mean that if host processor will be 200MHz faster then CUCM performance will be amazingly higher?
Unlikely but you need to start this thread off with the disclaimer that you're playing in a lab and not having a production problem then. I have CUCM 8.6(2a)SU1 running on my MacBook with reasonable performance and it doesn't meet the CPU requirements either.
You could launch RTMT and see if there is a high IOWait which may suggest a HD IOPS performance issue; much of Informx is sequential write-oriented after all. Also, is that 4GB reserved for the VM; or, is the hypervisor swapping it as virtual memory? Slowness in Tomcat (e.g. "Loading, please wait..") is esspecially indicitive of memory shortages. I have seen that exact behavior when I forgot to add memory to an MCS server during an upgrade.

Vcenter fails to sign in after update to 5.5 due to adding 3rd esxi 5.5 host

Added new 5.5esxi host, and attemted to add 5.5 host using 5.1 vcenter. Asked for license or evaluation then dropped host.
Vcenter will not authenticate with two 5.1 esxi hosts after 5.5 upgrade. I then updated 5.1 vcenter to 5.5 then tried to sign in, and vcenter failed however when I sign in one host in vsphere client the dialog box states that my vcenter at xx.xx.xx address is in use.
Unable to login, to vcenter. Since the hosts are live production servers, am unsure of the next step since I don't want to disconnect
The users "live production" from inventory.
I've updated to 5.5 due to a third esxi 5.5 installed over weekend.
There is no domain used and the domain controller is off.
Please offer assistance

hello David thank you for replying, I have to hosts that are running in production and they were previously connected to vCenter via 5. 1. the third host is not currently up and running yet and it is on soon to be vcenter 5.5. . The vCenter still loads as 5.5, and I can sign into the first host and the second host independent of the vSphere sign on via its ip address. . when I sign into the other hosts the to host involved with a dialog box stating vcenter in use. . Since it is a busy weekend for my client due to Memorial Day weekend. cannot afford to have an error with respect to disconnection of the host from the center when I sign on to vCenter via the web client I get a error message that it cannot connect to port 443 even though the vCenter client is connected to 9443. if you're stating that I should remove the host from the client "will I lose any existing inventory that is currently residing on the host on the production machines. please note, the domain controller, and ad seever are off currently due to client working in workgroups. Soon to move them on a domain..

ESXi 5.x on W530 - Possible !?

Hey Guys ~!
This is my first thread in here and became an owner of W530 few days ago.
Basically, I am a system enginner which needs to consume lots of VM for testing and therefore bought this powerful machine so that I can test on different things.
I am supposed to have lots of challenges on running ESXi on bare metal. I was successful in tackling the ethernet driver issue. However, I got no clue why ESXi did not find my disks on W530. No matter I used AHCI or Compatability mode, it still fails to scan any drive
Is any one having the same issue as mine also ?
Having VM Workstation on Windows is a workaround to me, but I do not want to waste my memory and processing power on Windows service. Nested VM is another consideration if I want to use ESXi, however, I believe the performance will be degraded.
Nice to meet you guyz amd I do find that this community knowledge looks quite up to date.

Who cares a virutal desktop management GUI ? vSphere client will have it
If ESXi , all other people can use vSphere client to setup VMs at the same time. I do not have the RAID enabled, but two harddisks has been installed
Workstation 9 seems support some of the features, but I just cannot find anything working right now

Esxi Ram Issues / Questions

Hey guys so have some issues with the only Vm i am running on this box A virtual Unraid Build
so i currently have Esxi 5.5U2 running specs are as follows:
Mobo: Asus P7P55WS Supercomputer
Cpu: Xeon X3440
Ram: 8gb crucial
Ssd: Raid 0 128gb Vertex 4's (Unraid cache drive)
Hdd's: 5 x 3tb WD Reds
Hdd: WD 250gb Blue - Datastore drive psu:
Corsair TX750 Case:
Norco 4020
Nic: Brocade cna 1020 10GB - Setup in Esxi with a vm Network to Unraid using Vmxnet3
Raid card: Silicon Image 3114 - For the Esxi Datastore
IBM M1015 flashed to Lsi-9211-IR-8I
I have passed thru the 6 ports on my motherboard to the VM for unraid
My main issue is that i am unable to allocate more than 4GB of ram to the VM. I get all kinds of errors when doing so.
This started after I enabled passthru.
I get this message:
[code]Powering on the virtual machine fails with the error: Invalid memory setting for FPT: memory reservation (sched.mem.min) should be equal to memsize(xxxx) (2002779)[/code]
So i tried setting the memory for the VM in MB and then changing the reservation for to match exactly in the settings. After doing that i get this error
[code]The Execute Storage vMotion for Storage DRS task fails with the error: The available Memory resources in the parent resource pool are insufficient for the operation (2070921)[/code]
I have no idea where to go from here. Any ideas?
I have plans on getting more ram for this machine, but dont want it to go to waste if i can figure out how to allocate more than the 4GB i already am

If I remember correctly the window's paging file is set to a discrete size, believe recomended 1.5 x ram size. If Bridge is running in 32 bit mode guess you only need 6 gig paging file, but would more do anything? How large is it, is it on a seperate partition? Also consider this:
If a paging file resides on a partition that contains other data, it may experience fragmentation as it expands to satisfy the extra virtual memory that is required. An unfragmented paging file leads to faster virtual memory access and to a greater chance of a dump-file capture that is free of significant errors.
Is fragmentation a consideration?
