Memory on Flash Drive
Ok. So a while ago we were backing up our Windows computer (pics, word documents, etc.) on this little flash drive.
Now, I want to use it for school. So, I plugged it into our Macs for the first time, I was going to just delete everything from the memory.
However, when I plug it in, the computer recognizes it, but when I try to drag the folders in it, it won't let me.
It says that I do not have the privileges to do that. I also tried this on the Windows side of my computer and it said the same thing.
Here's something that may be screwing it up:
There is a little Lock, Unlock thing on the side of the flash drive. We aren't exactly sure which position is which, but I'll describe it.
When it is on setting A, the computer recognizes it, but you cannot click on it. Also, it freezes the computer and it must be restarted.
When it is on setting B, you can click on it, but you have the problem I described above.
Is there some way I can just go around me "not having the privileges"?
Thanks for your help!
I appreciate it!
I ran the disk utility and it says that the format is MS-DOS File System (FAT32).
It also says that no owners are enabled, if that makes a difference.
I went to the Restore tab, but I didn't know what to do with it. Maybe you can help me?
Thanks for your help!
By the way, I will be giving out points at the end of the post, just to make sure I give the correct points to the correct people.
I appreciate your help!

USB ports not recognizing my Memory/USB/Flash drives
My macbook, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 duo (if that even helps), with Leopeord 10.5.5 's USB ports stopped working, but the weird thing is, when I plug in my iPod or mouse, they work. But when I plug in my Flash drive to try to open up some homework or SD card drive, anything that contains memory, it doesn't work, the computer shows that it has been plugged into my macbook through System Profiler, it also shows when it's gone, but the drive doesn't show up on my desktop and I can't find it anywhere. I know the flash drives are working because I tested them on different computers, safely removed them as well. Some people on a different forum suggested PRAM and SMC reset, I've done PRAM, but I don't see how it helps. please help! I need to be able to finish hmwk!!

Maintaining Photo Sequence from An Album To A Memory Stick (Flash Drive)
In iPhoto '11, Mac OS x 10.6.7, I want to copy the precise photo sequence I have in an album to a memory stick, for input into a photo frame (so the photos will play in proper sequence in the photo frame slideshow mode). Problem is the photos exported from the album to the stick lose the sequence I arranged in the album. Within the album I did a batch change and separated the photos by 1 minute, which I thought would "cement" the sequence of the photos from the album to the stick. Wrong. The photos exported to the stick kept their original date / time imported (also called modified) and thus did not keep the sequence I established in the album. FYI, all these photos were originally hard photos and were scanned into iPhoto library and later put into an album - thus the sequence within the album was manually arranged because the original input scanning was random. So, now that I have nicely sequenced photos within an album, how do I export and maintain the sequence from an album onto a stick?
Thanks,
HThe photos exported to the stick kept their original date / time imported (also called modified) and thus did not keep the sequence I established in the album.
When you modify the date of the Photos in iPhoto you change the Exif metadata of the shot. This is standard photo metadata and how every photo app tracks the date and time of the photograph.
When you export to the Finder (as you do when you send them to the memory stick) it uses File metatada to sort. This is not the same as Exif and the Finder doesn't work with Exif.
So this trick won't work for you. You need to use something that the Finder understands and will sort on
Here's one (of several) way(s) to do what you want:
Set your photos in the order you want
Then Photos Menu: Batch Change -> Set Title to Text "John's Birthday", for instance, and tick the box to append a number to each Photo. Now your photos are titled 'John's Birthday 001, John's Birthday 002 ... etc'
Then File -> Export and in the Export dialogue set the Filename to "Use Title"
Sort on Filename in the FInder and you end up with a folder full of images in the same order as the Album in iPhoto.

I just got a Swiss Memory swissbit flash drive that I attempted to completely erase and format in Disk Utility. I formatted as Mac OS X Standard and now my drive does not mount when I plug it in. The light on my flash drive blinks but I get no icon on the desktop or within the finder window. Disk Utility does not recognize it either for me to reformat and try again. Any suggestions?
I believe that could have happened. The drive
disappeared from the desktop after I selected "Erase"
in Disk Utility so I just removed it from the USB
port, as there was no way to eject it. Rebooting
gets me no where. However, the drive does show up
under USB in System Profiler as "Flash Disk".
Disk Utility will dismount a drive before it begins to format it. ( If it is mounted on the desktop, it is considered "in use" )
Once the format is complete, DU remounts the drive.
Of course, when dismounted, it will disappear. If you removed the device as soon as it went away, then the format process never completed, which would explain why it doesn't show up now.
Might want to check w/ the manufacturer to see if they have a reformatter utility for the drive. -
Can I install Windows ON a flash drive or on flash memory?
All over the internet I see questions from people wanting to install Windows from a USB flash drive with varying results, but my question is different. I want to install Windows ON removable flash memory. I would like to purchase a MacBook Air, but would like to also continue making use of Boot Camp without taking up too much of my limited hard drive space. I've found fast 3.0 USB sticks and flash cards that would be nice, but can they be treated as a partition in order to install and run Windows?
Ignoring the fact that Windows doesn't really support booting from removable media (you might be able to force it if you are willing to build a custom installer), I can think of another reason you wouldn'r want to consider this. Windows is notorious for heavy usage of the swap file, and I believe I recall reading one report where someone had managed to install Windows to a flash drive, and within 30-60 minutes, the OS had written to the swap file so much that the flash memory was beginning to fail. Remember that each time you write to flash memory, it cases a small amount of damage to the memory, and after a significant number of writed, it will fail. Regretfully, the Woindows swap file will cause this threshhold to be reached very quickly, and then you start getting write errors...

How do I get my pictures from my Bloggie TS10 onto a flash drive or memory stick?
How do I get my pictures from my Bloggie TS10 onto a flash drive or memory stick
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi Tom,
Welcome to Sony Community!
Pictures cannot be transferred directly to flash drive or memory stick. You can transfer them to computer and then to flash drive or memory stick.

Problem
High running Temperature
Specification
iMac 27 inch
Mac OS X Includes Software Snow Leopard upgraded to Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.03 (1278)
251 GB Flash Drive
2 TB Sata disk
Processor 3.4 Ghz Intel Core I7
Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970 2048 MB
Video: Software Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8
I use the imac mainly for editing Video which when doing so it has reached temperatures of near to 60° C which causes the program to become unstable and needs to be cooled down to operate correctly.
An Apple technician (by phone) advised me to download an smcfancontrol. This allows each individual fan to increase speed and also advises the current temperature at °C. The smcfancontrol has been downloaded but this has not resolved the problem. By increasing the speed of the fan more heat is generated and creates additional noise.
I have since taken the iMac to an Apple Store for examination as suggested by APPLECARE when the fans were found to be working correctly. An Apple Store technician carried out a test, but not whilst working under the pressure of FINAL CUT PRO when the iMac generates a high temperature.
The Temperature Specification for this model is
Operating Temperature 20 °c to 35°C
Storage Temp.47°c
Clearly the temperature my iMac is operating at is excessive and could cause the computer to break down prematurely. Has anyone experienced this problem.
Frank HowellWhen was the last time you cleaned/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports.
You need to do this with the iMac powered down, disconnected from power and everything disconnected.
Lay your iMac, screen down, on a soft surface, like a heavy towel. Use a small electronics vac, or portable or full size vac with hose and a crevice tool attachment and carefully and slowly vacuum every vent, slot and port on your iMac.
Then reconnect everything up, power up and download and install iStat Pro. Start working, then report the temps of your iMac after this has been done.
When using SMCFan Control, it is important not to run the fans at too high an RPM. This doesn't generate heat on its own, but will suck in more dust, lint and dirt into your iMac, and that will be the cause of additonal increases in heat.
I run my fans in the range of 1400-1600 RPMs. You can go as high as 1800 RPMs but it is important to keep the RPM range below either 1800 or below 2000 RPMs.
I, also, run a very small desktop fan pointed toward the upper back of my iMac to keep temps down even further. -
Ok, I am trying to purchase a camcorder for a gift. It's primary purpose will to be recording children's activities. I went to Best Buy today looking at the panasonic sdr h80k which has a hard drive. The sales associate suggested that I may want to consider a flash drive model instead, maybe the CanonFS200. He suggested this because he said if you drop your HDD then your videos are stuck in the camcorder.
Opinions?? Also, I would love opinions on camcorders - no expensive HDs. We have no HD units.
ThanksBTW, it can get confusing in the arena of camcorders when you say "HD", since some manufacturers use it to mean "hard drive" and others mean "high definition".
It sounds like you are talking about a high definition flash memory camcorder?
I don't know much about Sony high def camcorders, I tend to avoid Sony due to their NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome - they're notorious for starting format wars and using proprietary memory only usable in Sony devices (like Memory Stick), while nearly everyone else uses standard memory types like Compact Flash or SD/SDHC.
The Canon HF100 is an incredibly well regarded high definition flash camcorder. The Panasonic SD9 is also well regarded, for me the choice between the two was tough (I can't remember what made me go with the HF100 over the SD9 in the end.)
Define "not newer" as far as your computer? What processor does it have and how much memory?
It will most likely not be able to play the video from the camcorder directly, that requires a relatively new PC or at least a new video card (GeForce 8000 series or higher for NVidia, ??? for ATi). Of the 5-6 machines in my house, only my newest one can play back 1080p AVCHD video (the format the camcorders save in) smoothly.
That said, what you can do (and what I do) is archive the original source footage (the 1080p HD stuff), and convert each clip to a lower resolution (easier to play back and edit) and work with the low resolution clips.
As an example, I took about 10 3-5 minute clips of a friend's rock concert last Friday. I made a backup of the original clips, then used Handbrake (http://www.handbrake.fr/ I think, if that doesn't work Google it) to convert each clip to a 480p clip and worked with those for editing and such. On my machine the conversion process tool 1.5-2 minutes per minute of video, on an older machine it will take longer, but keep in mind that once you've gotten the conversion settings you want, conversion is a "fire and forget" process - batch up the clips for conversion, start the conversion, and go to bed. Wake up the next morning and it's done.

USB flash memory stick - 2 drives mount!
Hi,
When i insert my new "integral" ice flash drive, 2 drives mount on my desktop. Even disk utility sees them as different disks rather than partitions.
I only want one! Any clues?Aha, a proper Eureka moment.
Thanks for the tip, and it does exactly what I hoped it would.Thank you, I knew it had to be a simple solution ( too simple for me to work out though ! ) -
USB Flash Drive Memory Problem
Dear all,
Yesterday, I had a problem with my flash drive when I was trying to save stuff to it. This is the second time it's happened to me, the first time with a different flash drive. I was saving Word files onto it normally. All of the sudden, when I tried to save another file, it gave me an error message that the disk was full or that it was write protected (which is not) or that there was a problem with the file name (which was not the case either). I tried a couple of times, but still the same thing. Instead of saving the document directly from Word, I decided to save it to the desktop and then dump it into the flash drive. It gave me a message that the disk was full. I checked with "Get Info" and it still had a lot of space! I have a 1GB flash drive, and it says that it's only using 258.9 MB. I don't know what to do. The flash is formatted in MS-DOS File System FAT16, fyi. Help!
Thanks!Hello Again! Have you emptied the trash with it plugged in? The fat32 filesystem won't allow certain characters us Mac users are used to using all the time. If the size still doesn't seem to be resolved you can reformat it fat32 (msdos) on the Mac or on a pc to regain the total size. Tom

Do not buy the USB3 PNY Turbo Flash Drive!
I have highly recommended the USB 3 PNY Turbo Flash Drive in the recent past as a fantastic Read storage device. Well do not buy it. PNY drastically changed the memory chips inside without changing the model number and now it is a terrible device for holding your media for editing operations.
Thanks to Randall for making me aware of this problem. I now have 4 of the older good type and 3 bum ones. Here are two Windows 8 transfer plots of a large AVI file from the USB 3 Flash drive to a Samsung 840 Pro on my laptop. The first one is the original one that I purchased last July with a file transfer rate of 185 MB/s, and the second plot is the lousy performance of 120 MB/sec.of one of the last devices purchased in November.
The new ones are usable but nowhere as desirable as the 1st generation. I checked several websites and see that they no longer advertise the old faster specifications. Also I have tested all my devices and scoring is consistent and very repeatable. Now, that I know it is possible, I will start looking for a new vender that give the great read rate ideal for laptop editing. Of course it is not as convenient as a USB 3 Flash drive but my Vantec NexStar 6G USB 3 SSD enclosure with a Samsung 840 Pro drive has a Read rate of 250 MB/second.Bill,
It looks like you may have to settle for a slower flash drive at this price point for the foreseeable future: Every single one of the USB 3.0 flash drives at this capacity point that delivers at least the same level of read performance as the original PNY Turbo costs much more money than the PNY. ($150-ish for a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive, anyone?)
With that said, the PNY Turbo 3.0 is only intended to compete with the slower USB 3.0 flash drives such as the SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 drive (whose maximum read speed is only 100 MB/sec even in its largest-capacity 128GB version). -
Cannot Delete Files From a Flash Drive
I let a friend of mine borrow my flash drive so that he could do some type of system recovery or something on his microsoft surface tablet. He gave it back to me so I could use it for something I need to do, but he did not delete any of the recovery files, so I currently do not have enough memory to use it for what I need it for. I tried deleting the items and everytime I receive an error message and I cannot delete them. If any one has any ideas of what I can do to fix this I'd really appreciate it. I right clicked and went to get info to check the permissions and it said read and write was enabled so I'm not sure what else to do.
Sweet...that totally worked. Thank you!

No /dev/sda1 for flash drive w/custom kernel [solved]
I think I may have made an error selecting the right drivers for my kernel or something. When I put my flash drive in with the official arch kernel, /dev/sda1 is created. However, when I put my flash drive in with my custom kernel, it does not. The weird thing is when I do a tail /var/log/messages.log, it gives me this:

I will be more than happy to provide any more info that you may need. This has bothered me for a while, so any help would be much appreciated! Thanks for the reply penguin!
I tried adding it to the kernel, but it did not work. I think usb_hid is just for usb keyboards/mouses/etc.
I noticed that every time I remove and plugin my flash drive /var/log/messages.log says something slightly different for my flash drive if that helps:

Finder crashes in 10.7.5 with sandisk ultra 16GB flash drive
I have tried using 3 different 16GB SanDisk Ultra flash drives, and all 3 lead to a finder crash. When the drive is first put into a USB slot it will appear to mount and the contents are visible. I then eject the drive and put it back in. At that point I may get the message that the drive was not propoerly ejected, or I may not. Sometimes I have received the same message when I try to eject the drive. Under any circumstance, the finder seems to crash (and is listed as not responding in the force quit application) and it will not restart appropriately.
I do not believe this is a hardware issue because if I boot into BootCamp with Windows 7 running the flash drive can be mounted and unmounted without any difficulty. Further, it can be mounted and unmounted on several PC's that I have tested. I also don't believe this is a formatting issue because the flash drive can be mounted and unmounted successfully in another iMac that is running OS 10.6.8.
I have wondered if this is related to some program running in the background, so I have booted in Safe Mode, but when in Safe MOde the flash drive won't even mount. Lastly, I have reset the PRAM and this hasn't helped.I appreciate your help. Here is the full report:

I have a MacBook Air and I need to free up space...
1) I have three series of a tv show on my itunes which are taking up loads of memory - see image - I want to move these movie files onto a Flash Drive. However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
Is this possible?
2) I have managed to copy the movie files onto the flash drive, however when I tried to play one to check that they were loaded properly it didn't have a program that could run the file (they have copied over in a m4V format). Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
Thank you so much for any answers posted.
Best,

If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system. If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player. This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.
If you want to set all .m4v files to open with Quicktime by just double clicking on the file, you can follow the steps here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2573/os_x_how_to_change_default_application_to_op en_file_type/
3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop. When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes. I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard. In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.
I hope that helps!
