Memory on new iMac 3.5GHz I7

I just ordered a new iMac 3.5GHz I7 with 1TB SSD and 8GB of memory.  I have two 4GB iMac memory pulls that someone gave me when they went to 32GB on their new iMac.
My question is what would 32GB over 16GB on this mac with OEM 1TB buy me in performance increase.  I am thinking not much...
Would appreciate any comments.

Sorry my Bad..
No more than a Virtual machine ever so often, Photoshop, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie.  MS office every once in a while.  Chrome & Safari for browsers and of course Mail other standard OS X programs.
The memory is Apple1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM 2x4GB so I don't expect any problems.  He bought new in ~July 2014.
Thanks for the input.

  • Memory on new iMac 27"

I'm getting ready to purchase one of the new iMac 27" computers (yeah!) and I've basically figured out everything I want at this point other than the memory. I'm trying to decide b/w the 16 and 32 GB options. The main applications I run are Parallels and associated Windows applications like PPT, Word, Excel and remote desktop connection; iTunes and a Windows-based statistical package.
Any thoughts on whether it's worth going up to 32 GB or whether 16 GB should do it? Part of the reason I'm asking is because I found that 8 GB of memory on my MBP was simply not enough when running Parallels and noticed a nice pickup in performance by upgrading my memory to 16 GB on my MBP.
    Thanks
    JK

Parallels consumes a lot of memory depending of the memory you assign to your virtual machine, so maybe you will need 16 GB.
However, don't buy your iMac with 16 GB of memory. I recommend you to buy it with 8 GB of memory, and then, buy 16 or 32 GB (maybe 32 GB are too much) and install it on your Mac. You can buy the memory in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L It will be much cheaper than buying the iMac with 16 GB or 32 GB.

  • Can I use firewire to transfer everything from my Macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.25 GHz) to the new iMac (2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5)?

I have a MacBook Pro to use at work. It has everything (all genuine softwares, server connection etc). The company is using a contract IT company so connecting to the server and setting email is real issue with me as this IT people can't configure Mac. Last time it took them 1 week to set up everything for me ( me one the phone with them as they aren't coming to our office - they only use QuickViewer to get access to my laptop).
Now the company is buying me an iMac so that I can use the laptop at home. Can I use firewire to transfer everything to the new iMac so that I don't waste my time installing softwares & calling this IT people to set up my email and connection to the server again? If it works do I have to enter serial numbers in again for all the softwares or I have to buy new softwares (I know with Adobe CS - I can only install in one computer)?
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the adobe suite on the imac you will have to deactivate it on the MBP or it will show up as being used. That is if you can only install it on one computer. Some licenses you can install it on 2 computers but it has to say that on the cd key tag.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the contractors. It is not that hard to get stuff like that up and running on the mac.

My iPhoto Library (version 8.1.2) is 280GB (greater than 50% of my 500GB total storage memory on my iMac.  It was too large for me to drag it to a new hard drive so the Apple geniuses did it for me.  However they did not delete the Library from my iMac (that's my responsibility).  I dragged it to Trash and when it started to move I clicked over to the new hard drive to confirm it had indeed been copied.  I became nervous when I didn't see among the few files on this otherwise empty new hard drive anything that resembled a 280GB Library so I cancelled the migration to trash.
How can I be sure that my iphoto has been copied and that all my "metadata" survived in tact?

    the new backup drive
I thought the new drive would be your data drive to host the iPhoto library. Do you also use it for TimeMachine backups?
I am unable to search either in email as well as Finder.  I AM able to search within iPhoto though, thankfully
Spotlight may still be busy rebuildig its index.
You could try to rebuild the Spotlight Index, if you do see no progress:

I hope, other frequent posters will drop in. I have not used iPhoto 8.x in long time.

That certainly looks like a low memory issue, 2 GB ram is barely enough to run Mac OS X versions from Lion through Yosemite.  The high number of Page Outs and killed processes show very high memory pressure.
Try adding memory, but be sure it is high quality, Mac certified memory such as that from OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com

  • Can I use memory from my old G4 laptop in a new iMac?

My old PowerBook G4 (PowerPC) just died and I know that I have some extra RAM installed in it that I can remove.  Last year, I bought an iMac and would love to be able to use my old RAM in my iMac - will the Intel iMac be able to support my old PowerPC RAM that was in my laptop?  What about my MacPro at work running Mac OSX 10.7.4?
I'm just not sure if the new hardware in the iMac/MacPro will be compatible with the older hardware from my PPC.

You can go to http://www.everymac.com and look up the memory in the old Mac and the new and compare, but the answer is going to be no, the older memory will not be compatible with the new iMac.  Different modules, chips, speed, etc.

  • Powerpoint on a new iMac-- memory issue

Using 2004 Office/Powerpoint on a new iMac with 8GB RAM...continue to get 'not enough memory' message when trying to make a large Powerpoint file...so far, 200 pp of photos, with 100 to go.  Why?  Solution?

Office 2004 will not run on a new iMac. Only Office 2008 or 2011 will run under on a new iMac.
Yes, you may be running out of RAM. Launch Activity Montior and see how much free memory is available.
What resolution are the photos? It's wise to reduce the photo resolution to a more manageable size by exporting them from iPhoto before creating a Powerpoint slideshow.

  • 2011 IMAC has only 4Gig memory..new OS is eating it up....what do I do?

Before spending big bucks or 20% of new purchase on new IMAC...how high should I uopgrade memory to?

    What 20 percent?
I've bought all my Mac RAM from one place for over a decade and they have a kit to add 4GB RAM to your model for about US$60:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S04S/
That kit will give you a total of 8GB RAM, which should be adequate for most tasks outside of pro video and audio apps. Installation takes about 10-15 minutes and is an easy DIY project.
Also remember that OSX has better memory management than many people give credit. Often, what comes across as a RAM issue turns out to be system confusion due to the installing of system-modifying hacks, anti-virus software, or those awful "I'll clean up your Mac for you" programs. I hope you have not trod that path!

  • Will new imac support DDR3L memory

My new iMac came with 8GB of memory and I want to upgrade it to 32GB. Does Ivy Bridge support the lower voltage chipsets like what OWC sells. I have usedOWC memory on my MBP's for years without a problem. Suggestions??

What does OWC say about DDR3L in your iMac?

  • NEW IMAC MEMORY

Well, I've done it!  The new iMac has been released in Australia and I have ordered a 27", 3TB drive, biggest graphics etc.
My problem is that I have previously used PC. and I don't know much about memory. The cost of extra memory in Aussie is prohibitive!
In the order it said 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM,which I have only ordered 8GB and wish to purchase additional ram.
Could somebody please explain in English exactly what I need to order. I know that I want 16GB (2x8GB), but I don't know how to explain it.
Also could you please advise the best place to purchase.
I have been advised that the iMac will be delivered in the Christmas week. Thanking you in anticipation, yackem

    Hey down there!

They do ship here, no idea of the cost, but you can find that out there also... & ask them about it!

New to the iMac and apple

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you aren't going to use your Mac for anything special (Final Cut, Aperture, Photoshop, games...), you don't need that graphic card and you will save money.
Also, as it looks like you are going to buy the 27-inch iMac, I recommend you to buy the Mac with 8 GB of memory, and then, buy the memory that your iMac needs in OWC or Crucial (the iMac supports 32 GB of RAM) > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L
Doing this, you will save a lot of money. Also, it won't void the warranty of the Mac. If you need help installing the RAM, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5540

  • Does the new iMac use the same memory as the previous?

Right now i have the 24" 2.16ghz iMac and i am considering selling it to buy the newest 24" 2.4 ghz version. My question is, do they use the same ram? The apple specs page for the new imac says it uses 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) which is what i thought i had in my current iMac. For some reason though on crucial's website it says the new imac uses 800mhz ram, i would likely trust apples specs but i just wanted to confirm if it is the same so i know if i can keep a 1gb stick or not to put in the new one. Thanks!

By using the manual method (Apple > iMac > 2.8 GHz) I only got PC2-5300 (667 MHz) RAM (although I do get PC2-6400 RAM for the 2.4 GHz model - but you probably won't benefit from the performance boost, just like my Mini has now 1 GB of 400 MHz DDR RAM running at 333 MHz). And yes, the new iMac uses the same RAM as the older one.
I'd suggest you visit an Apple store and see the new iMac for yourself though. Your iMac still seems like a pretty good computer, and the 2.4 GHz processor and/or Radeon HD 2600 card may not warrant the upgrade price, especially if you don't like the glossy screen (which is reportedly much glossier than the MacBook's display).

  • How often do new iMacs come out?

I've never owned an iMac (Just the monitor). I'm keen to purchase a:

    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M with 2GB video memory
    $1,999.00
Before I buy one, I'd like to know how often the new ones come out because I'd hate to spend all my money on one then a brand new version comes out. I'm not sure if they change the actually iMac (change the design/dimensions) or is it only the software that updates?
I also understand there are lots of options you can select, which impact the price, such as:

With just the monitor would I be able to run windows software as well, such as FL Studio?
So I'm wondering what happens when I get his thing. Do I just turn it on and start using it as I would my MacBook Pro? Do I need to install things, configure updates etc. Will I need system unit or will a hard disk with a lot of space be equal?
I plan to use the iMac for absolutely everything, Adobe Mastercollection, Music Production (FL Studio/Ableton/Logic). I'd like to be able to plug in synths, digital pianos and I also need good sound, can I plug in speakers or anything?
As you can see, I don't know much about the iMac even though I've looked around and read reviews. Thankyou in advance!

  • Doom 3 custom reolution on the new iMac?!?!

I wanted to know if anyone here knows how to change the resolution of Doom 3 to fit the iMac? (in my case I want to change it to 1680 x 1050)
Any help is VERY much appreciated..

    Hello All!
After responding to this thread, I noticed that a couple of posters do not list intel iMacs on the "what system do you have?" line below their message.
This being a Core Duo iMac Discussion Group, I simply assumed that everyone posting here had Intel machines. That error means some of the suggestions I made are not necessarily appropriate.
If you are running the new version of Doom on a non-Intel Mac, you may have problems with the software that are NOT inherent to the upgrade or the game.
The Doom Universal Binary patch recodes part of the game to take advantage of Intel-specific chip features that improve performance on those CPUs.
In addition (possibly most important), the patched version takes advantage of lookahead features in the ATI video cards on the new iMacs that may or may not be available on your system.
SO--if you don't have an intel CPU, OR if your video board cannot take advantage of the lookahead option, OR if you have too little RAM or video memory, OR if you have an older video card, OR if you have a below 1.5GHz CPU, OR if you have an older version of OS X, you will have problems running at higher resolutions or with all the features switched on.
OTOH-you can probably have fun at lower resolutions and fewer features, so all is not lost!
    Regards,
    Gene
