Memory optimisation

Hi,
My question is the following : What type of memory optimisation does TimesTen do ? If this is used as cache for an oracle database- is the memory footprint really comparable to a relational database - or is there some type of internal optimisation i.e. by indexing or reformatting the internal representation. For example, if I want to cache a 500GB database and I only have 50 GB RAM - does that really mean I can only have 10% of my data in TimesTen ?
For example, if I have one table with 1MM rows and one of the columns only has only two distinct values - will TimesTen could do optimisation and only store those distinct values once - thus reducing the required foortprint.

No, TimesTen does not perform the type of optimisations that you are describing. It really is an in-memory relational database (and can be used as a standalone database without Oracle in fact). The common experience is that data tends to take up more space in TimesTen due to the different storage organisation (optimised for performance); a table that occupies 1 GB in Oracle may easily take 2 GB in TimesTen (but this is very schema dependant). Conversely, indexes tend to be quite a lot smaller in TimesTen than they are in Oracle so there is some degree of swings and roundabouts.

  • Fast PC yet still problems with memory optimisation on CS3

    I have a Dell 690 with eight 3GHZ processors and 3 Gig of RAM.
    I'm editing a half-hour documentary with lots of video audio and still files.
    Often when I create a new title caption, I receive a warning that memory is low. And now it's freezing up all the time when I'm animating stills (particularly when I apply a heavy effect like Gaussian Blur).
    Do I need more RAM? Or is Premiere CS3 just as lacking as the previous versions, when it comes to editing big projects?

    Two suggestions:
    1) make sure that under the Preferences options, there's a setting somewhere that says something to the effect of optimize for Performance vs Memory. (By default, it's set to performance). Switch that to memory.
    2) Consider using Vista 64. That will allow any 32 bit process to access up to 4 gigs of virtual address space instead of 3 gigs. This should help considerably... plus, you could throw more memory into the machine which would help if you're running multiple concurrent applications (case in point, if you're attempting to use Dynamic Link between AE & PPro).

    Its my first thread in my SDN.
    We are about to migrate a new system in our environment
    The new hardware will be IBM x3500 64bit with 20GB and for some unavoidable reasons we are planning to the use this system as 32 bit OS
    I am aware if we use the system as 32 bit we have to compromise the memory and performance. But I like to know will this cause a performance problem in SAP or we will not be able to avail the complete usage of memory in the applications and also in case of hardware issue will IBM support us?
    Kindly give your thoughts and with your inputs i can take it up further.

    Hi there,
    since 32-Bit support is basically just not there for most current SAP product releases, you won't even get to the point where performance would be your concern.
    A new server installation, with current product versions - there's no way to do this right on 32-Bit.

  • Save space on C with Maps on N97

    Well known tip for regaining space on C after installing the latest Maps3.04. Go to installed apps and remove all the 'share location' stuff, you'll get about 3 to 4 meg back, and if you really want to share location install Nokia social messaging/facebook and Twitter app, from Nokia Beta Labs or Ovi Store. This will install on E and both FB and Twitter will add location on posts

    I have a couple of concerns and questions. For starters:
    Every time I load a program onto my phone like a theme or software it decreases my phone’s memory even if I do select the mass memory option as a target. What can I do to change it because my phone functionality slows down when I load software?     Number two. What can I do to fix my browser? Every time I click on my Web icon on my phone’s home screen, I only get as far as the Bookmark option then I get cut off. It disconnects every time I try to connect to the internet. This includes trying to access the Ovi store and Nokia. I just cannot access the internet. I have checked my internet setting and it is definitely not that. What is procedure to reinstall the web browser?

    When I try to connect via the AnyConnect client I am presented with the certificate pop up.
    If I accept the certificate I get a message at the bottom of the AnyConnect screen stating “Connection attempt has failed”.
    If I deny it I get a pop up message from AnyConnect stating “AnyConnect cannot confirm it is connected to your secure gateway. The local network may not be trustworthy. Please try another network”.

  • [nForce] PowerColor Radeon 9550 256MB AGP

    I just received my MB K7N2 Delta2-LSR ver10 and use Live update for all of system, bios, firmware, etc.  This is a driver problem that I cannot solve, i get a blue screen crash and a 0x0000008e (etc.) win32k.sys error, I have reformatted the harddrive and reinstalled everything exactly like MSI and TUL/PowerColor requires and I still get the driver blue screen crash after only a few minutes.  stays up in safemode well, however, I cannot find the culprit driver,  I have done all the tests on the Power Supply, even the silly test on memory that microsoft has and reset the bios, reverted the bios and changed the cell values, does someone know how to get this AGP Board to work, it seems that a lot of you are using the 9550.

    what bios you got?  b3 is apparently best for stability.  b4 and b5 have known issues unless DOT in cell menu is enabled.  Mine works fine with everything (high performance and memory) optimised in there with b5.  I find that when DOT is enabled it doesn't come out of stand-by regularly causing DOT to disable itself.
    I have same motherboard and currently trying b60 (not officially released) but still exhibiting same problems as b5.

  • Memory slot utility

    Hi everyone
    I have just upgraded my mac pro early 2009 with an ATI 5870 and an extra 1gig of ddr3 ram.
    All seems to be fine no problems all the ram checks out ok and is working but this utility keeps telling me everytime I boot up or log out and into another profile that the memory modules are installed in the correct slots which is really nice to know but does it have to tell me this every time as once is enough.
    I have tried moving the memory modules around as slots 1 2 3 had the base ram installed at the factory I then added the extra 1 gig in the 4th slot and started getting the message as stated above. So I swapped the ram around with one of the base ram sticks and put one of them in the 4th slot still the same but when you remove the ram from slot 4 and boot up with 3gig of ram its all happy again.
    So I then placed the ram in slot 4 3 and 2 leaving the 1st slot empty and the utility tells me it is the wrong configuration which is fine as thats expected as it will not give optimised preformance i just wanted to see its reaction.
    I have phoned apple and they gave me a number for a local shop and the guy there said he has had this happen as well just make sure software and firmware are up to date and it should clear which of course they are  and I have double checked.
    So for now I went into system on mac HD and then into core services and removed the memory slot utility and placed it somewhere else for safe keeping and it has stopped now but thats because it can't use the utility.
    I am stumped I can't see this being hardware it seems it could be software or a bug not sure either way I am covered under warranty but I just want to get to the bottom of this other people have reported this on these forums but not mentioned how they got on.
    My next step is to reinstall lion I have my old osx leopard cd's also and then I can reinstall everything else from scratch but this seems extreeme
    If anyone has any ideas I would be really gratefull

    Thanks for the replies and the suggestions much appreciated for now I have disabled the memory slot utility as I know the memory is installed correctly so I don't need it.
    I went into the finder then into systems and then core services and removed the memory slot utility which is no problem all fixed the only thing that does concern me is if it is a problem that needs addressing because if I need a new processor board I would rather apple pay for it while I am with applecare as those babies cant be cheap.
    My applecare service expires next september so I will keep an eye on things for now.
    I have done some more checks my ram is fine no problems my system checks out ok and all is running fine as it has for the past two years since I bought my mac pro.
    All my ram is apple certified ram and they are all equal memory modules 1gig in size each.
    Memory can be added to slots 1 2 3 no messages but any ram added to slot 4 and it tells me the memory modules are installed correctly which really warms my heart but just don't tell me this every time I boot up and log in and out it tends to get on your nerves after a while.
    Also if we do something that is not correct like put memory in slot 4 3 2 leaving slot 1 empty it then gives you a longer message telling you its all wrong and to swap them around which is fine as I did that on purpose just to see what would happen.
    So do you think I am worrying to much and I should just chill out on this I found my fix just take the memory slot utility out of core services and it is all fine or like X423424X said enabling root though I went for the safe option and just removed the memory utility.
    I know I am not alone I have searched the web and on this forum and there are others out there and everyone has different solutions the guy I spoke to at my local apple authorised reseller said he had the same thing happen but it was his firmware but that is not the case for me and others as that is all up to date and my software is also current.
    Do you think its a hardware issue or software is there cause for concern as these things are not cheap.
    Again thanks for your suggestions and comments its appreciated if anyone does find out what this is please let me know as it is playing on my mind I am one of these people who has to find the solution or cause I can't leave things be.

  • High memory usage when rendering

    Hi.
    Using a new cs4 system: I start a new 1080i project.
    I dynamically link to a new AE file. Within the AE file I put one 4mb jpg running over 20 seconds, and save.
    Back to Ppro, I put the AE comp on the timeline.
    At this point, Task Manager shows that PPro is using 0.5 gb ram.
    I render the 20 seconds of the timeline which has the AE clip.
    After rendering, Task Manager shows PPro as using almost 2GB ram.
    But this ram doesn't seem to get freed up again... so after a few minutes more working, I start to get ram warning messages.
    I've tried changing the "Optimise rendering for Performance / Memory, but this doesn't have much effect.
    So I've got a new system with loads more memory than my old XP cs3 system - yet the performance in PPro is nothing like as good.
    After rendering, I can save, close and open the file again - it's marked green for rendered, and the memory is back to 0.5gb. But then I have to let it generate the PE file again (see other thread). And I shouldn't have to close the programme between every render, I'm sure.
    Suggestions very welcome to get what should be an awesome system up to scratch.

    We were just testing on other projects and things seemed far more normal.
    This project is huge, about 50MB saves, I think I'm going to start a cut down version and lose a lot of the old stuff.
    In the problematic project I was using Sapphire plugins and Zaxwerks Invigorator 1.0.2, although just 3 objects on one layer. The Sapphires are MatteOps, Gradient... I think that's it.
    I guess Zaxwerks is likely suspect although I thought it was reputable.
    There are also 750 plugins in total on the machine. These are Sapphire, Zaxwerks, Magic Bullet, some DigiEffects and Trapcode Suite. All of with I thought were supposed to be stable.
    If it is Zaxwerks is there anything I can do to get around the issue? Except either to not use it or to reset After Effects every 10mins.

    When I turn debug mode on for server via config tool, I've got 503 error and message "SAP WebAS Engine is starting... Message: Dispatcher running but no

    Windows Taskmanager shows me that 2GB total memory and near 600 MB of memory free.
    Also I'm confusing about these nodes ("general", "bootstrap") with similar parameters and don't know which parameters I should set up according to note

    2) I need to modify Java applications, build, deploy to local server and debug it there. Also may be ABAP debug will be used. Please give me information
    about optimised engine (and, if needed, NWDS) settings for these tasks.

    In general terms, the bootstrap process is what is used as java is starting up and pulling objects into memory. The heap used for the bootstrap process (I believe) is returned to the system after startup.
    The server process is where the Java application server applications are so it will require the most heap.

  • How to change default memory storage for music in ...

    i want the memory card to be default in the phone, so that i can just put all my music on it and forget about it. at the moment i use ovi player but this just puts it on the mass media memory, therefore filling it up quickly. is there a setting in either the phone or the application to put memory card as default?

    There are some serious flaws in the Nokia software when it comes to saving your music to your phone's memory card instead of the mass storage area.
    I have an N8 with a 32GB MicroSD card and I keep all my music there. It totals over 18GB at the moment so it won't fit on the mass storage area (16GB) no matter how much the Nokia software might want to put it there. This is how I get around the dilemma:
    Nokia Music Player is what I use to handle my music collection. However, I don't use it to transfer the music to my phone because it will only copy it to the mass storage area. You can not configure Nokia Music Player to transfer to the MicroSD card so you can stop trying!
    Nokia Suite on the other hand can be configured to save to your phone's MicroSD card and happily, it reads and respects the music library that Nokia Music Player has prepared. Unfortunately, Nokia Suite has very limited abilities when it comes to managing your music. It can't sort out the album art for example.
    So you will need to use both programs, Nokia Music Player to manager and prepare your music library complete with embedded and optimised album art, and Nokia Suite to tranfer it to the MicroSD card on your phone once it's all ready to go.
    Alternatively, you can connect your phone to you PC and treat it like a disk drive, copying all the MP3 files over manually. That's what a lot of people do because the Nokia software is awkward to say the least.

  • Remote Desktop Consuming ALL System Memory

    Folks, I have a Windows 7 enterprise machine through which i RDP to another desktop on the same floor as mine, which ends up freezing my machine untill i donot close out the RDP program from Task Manager.
    On checking from the Process tab i see that MSTSC.exe process is consuming almost all of the 8GB of memory i have on my machine. When i kill the present RDP session and start a new one, it starts consuming memory from MBs and reaches to GBs almost
    all memory capacity.
    I have replaced my machine with a new rebuilt machine alltogether, but still is the same issue.
    I have also changed the Experience setting and optimised the session settings for RDP but no good.
    Please suggest as it is hampering my day to day work.

    I suggest we first run Xperf tool to take a look for the high memory usage:
    WPT: WPR/Xperf: Capture high cpu, disk i/o,
    file, registry, networking, Private bytes, Virtual bytes, Paged Pool/Nonpaged pool and/or application slowness.
    Similar threads suggested that the high usage caused by MSTSC.exe is some printer related issues, please take a check with your printer configuration and the printer drivers.

  • Memory leak analysis

    I've been writing a multi-threaded, non-blocking I/O game server and I'm kinda taking a break from hammering out code at the moment to analyze how efficient the server is. With 100-300 clients each transmitting data and receiving a proper response once every second or so, the server has almost 0% CPU load (on an AMD 4000+ 64bit CPU) so I am very happy with this.
    However, I find that with -verbose:gc on, I can watch the memory every so slowly leak away.. for instance, I will lose around 3 kb / minute with an initial stack of 128mb, 256mb max with a few clients, and this can get as high as 100kb / minute with 200 clients hammering the server. I have looked quite hard at the code and I cannot see anywhere where I am continuously allocating memory and retaining references to it, so everything should be getting GC'd, but some additional kilobytes remain after each GC.
    What I am wondering is, how can I profile the memory usage to, for instance, have an up-to-date count of how many objects of type X (including Strings and ArrayLists and stuff) that are currently in existance at any given time? This would at least give me a better idea of where this potential memory leak is?

    You may find the JVM is still warming up. It attempts to optimise as it goes and can still be consuming more memory as it re-optimises.

  • Converting a laptop into a MAME cabinet: Looking for optimisation.

    I recently turned an old laptop into a MAME arcade cabinet.
    So far I only have the laptop working with MAME able to play games. I will build the cabinet from scratch once I have fully optimised the laptop.
    Let me explain all of this in details.
    First of all, I got motivated with this video of someone making a MAME arcade cabinet out of an old computer and something that looks like an empty Neo-Geo arcade cabinet.

    While the idea seems really nice, using FreeDOS (or any DOS operating system) really bothers me.
    Since, in the video, DOS is used to boot really fast and have nearly nothing between MAME and the operating system, there's no reason not to use GNU/Linux to achieve the same goal.
