Memory problem on a Lenovo 3000 0769-BAG

Hi !
I own this nice machine, and put into it a Linux 64 bits OS. (Fedora 7).
Everything is working fine, but I needed more memory to be able to scan/process large images.
So I went to Lenovo web site and saw I needed PC2-5300 Sodimm memory. For a maximum of 4GB.
I've bought 2 Sodimm labelled like that : 2GB DDR2-667Mhz-CL5 based upon 16 chips labelled PR128MB-3 "Made in Taiwan" ...
So I removed the 2 512MB modules and put the 2 2GB modules. The BIOS see them and count up to 4096 GB. Fine.
But after POST, Nothing happens. No beep no disk activity, no nothing. The message "Press F1 to enter BIOS or F12 for boot menu " disapears, the cursor goes on the upper left corner and that's it.
So I removed the first 2GB module and put an original 512 MB instead. The machine boots fine, I'm able to successfully test the RAM either with the Vista boot menu option or the Memtest which came with Fedora.
I've swapped the 2 GB module and done the very same test. OK. So I'm pretty confident on the operation of the 2 2GB modules. Vista and Fedora proudly announce near 2.5 GB of memory (depending of the shared memory assigned to the Intel Graphic card)
If I put the 2 GB module on the first slot, and the 512 MB atop, the machine refuses to boot.
So, Either there is a problem with my memory modules, or there is a problem accessing the maximal capacity using 2GB modules ? What do you think and what should I do ?
TIA !
Oh, BTW the BIOS is 68ET21WW (V1.05)

Very curious indeed!
You mention you have BIOS V1.05, the latest on Lenovo is V1.02 but with the same number 68ET21WW that you have. Typo?
Are there any memory settings in BIOS that you can play with?
Put in a 512/2GB combo, go to this webpage from Crucial, scroll down and have it scan your system.
Repeat with the other 2GB. What are the results?, are those 2GB sticks what they are supposed to be?
As you run Linux, I am at a dead end here, no knowledge.
I assume you have installed (not just downloaded) all the Lenovo updates for Windows?
A 32-bit OS can only address 3GB, so 4GB would be a waste.
A 64-bit OS (both Linux and XP or Vista) should be able to work with 4GB.
Can you borrow a 1GB stick and see if it works with 3GB?
EDIT:
After hunting around on the web, it seems that there is a RAM limit for the Lenovo 3000 N100.
Also, Lenovo says this on their website:
1 GB (footnote 4) (2-512 MB DIMMS) PC2-5300 DDR2 667 MHz memory, expandable with optional SDRAM SO DIMM module to a maximum 2.0 GB (footnote 5)
Support Center: 800-426-7378
4: For PCs without a separate video card, memory supports both system and video. Accessible system memory is up to 128 MB less than the amount stated, depending on video mode.
5: Memory options up to 1024 MB PC5300 DDR2 SDRAM SO DIMM can be added for maximum memory expansion.I picked up somewhere that some BIOSes test for an original Lenovo RAM stick, but could not find this reference again.
If you get that 1GB + 2GB working, that will be the max, otherwise hope for a new BIOS that will allow for 4GB.
On Buy.com (sells Kingston RAM), several users reported success with 2x 1GB Kingston RAM.

The camera driver is not original, it is automatically installed when vista operating system setup. So what can I do? Is there any original camera driver somewhere? Thanks a lot...

    Hi !
I have exactly the same laptop and I had the same problem.
It was hardware related. The camera wire become loose and was not connecting sometimes.
You can, if skilled, solve the problem yourself by following the dismantling videos and correctly plugging in the camera. If you route the cable correctly you'll solve the problem.
Bear in mind that you need some tools, time as you'll have to dismantle quite all the laptop and skills in order not to make things worse...

  • Severe problem while starting Lenovo 3000 N200

    Dear friends & experts,
I am using Lenovo 3000N200 0769BDG laptop. I have following problems while starting the system.
Recently my system was hacked against which I installed an Anti-Malware software. It showed that the system was free from any Malware.(But believe me, it is true that the system was hacked.). But each time on starting the system, a  black and white window  is being displayed which contains the following message:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows didnot start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration  to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed , or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
    Safe  Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
    Start Windows Normally
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
    Seconds until Windows starts:30.....1
After 30 seconds, the Windows logo is displayed immediately followed by a Blue screen which lasts for 1 second and the system restarts.  I tried all the options listed above-- from Safe Mode to Start Windows Normally but the same problem recurrs. And the system doesn't shutdown until I press the power button.
I have a licensed version of Windows Xp SP3 as OS. I tried to repair the system using WinXP CD but I found the following message:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.
A point to be noted is that earlier, I removed the Rescue & Recovery from my system  thinking that it might not be of much use and now, I lament for it.
When I press F3 the same window appeared and the same problem recurred.
I tried to access the files in my hard disk using Ubuntu CD and it was successful. I used Lenovo hardware quick test to check for any hardware faults, and my system passed all the tests.
I request you to help me in solving this problem so that I can continue my studies peacefully.
    Thanking you,
    With regards,
    T.I. Kiran

First off, being "hacked" and having viruses/malware are two different things. Someone hacking your computer doesn't really mean you have a virus/malware, it means an actual person gained access to your computer remotely and did something to it.
More than likely you got a virus that corrupt your Windows System directory and/or registry. Anti-malware software won't necescarily detect all viruses, especially executable that run commands to simply delete files.
The blue screen you're seeing is what us technicians call the BSOD (blue screen of death), it's an indication that there is a direct corruption with the core files that Windows requires to function properly.
As an IT Technician, if this were one of my laptops or one of my end-users, I would simply reload it with a fresh copy of Windows XP. There's a possiblity that all data you had on the laptop is gone because if the Windows core files are corrupt/missing, then that could very well mean your system was wiped completely but the boot table is in tact, hence the fact that you even have the option to boot Windows XP.
One other option I would suggest is try to reinstall Windows XP. Sometimes if you have the right copy of the install, it will let you reinstall the Windows XP core files, leaving your programs, files and directories in tact.
    Good luck.

    hi guys,
i have a problem with my lenovo 3000 and the hvr-900 usb tv-stick from hauppauge. driver installation and software installation from wintv is no problem. finding the channels ist also no problem. sound is good but i have no pictures... the display ist black.
my grafik chip is the intel GMA X3100 onboard. i thought it was a problem with the overlay function. the wintv software shows me "surface vmr" on my old desktop with the old wintv pci card it shows me "surface overlay".
internet tv (tvu, tv ants...) works without any difficulties. but i can`t find a function to activate "overlay".
has anyone an idea? thanks for helping.

i try an older usb machine from hauppauge which supports analog only (the new stick supports analog/digital) and... it works... the wintv software shows me "surface overlay"... crazy...

  • Lenovo 3000 C200 turns on but fails to start

    Greetings all!
I have a problem with my Lenovo 3000 C200 and I'm hoping someone can help. Please be patient with me as I'm not as good with computers as I am with larger equipment. The problem goes like this:
I bought the laptop used about a year ago, running Windows Vista Business. It has worked without any problems until a recent work related trip to California 3 weeks ago where a balloon popped up telling me Windows Live OneCare was expiring and I needed to uninstall it and replace it with a different antivirus software. I didn't think much about it at the time and was going to install the newest version of Norton when I got home and back to work but before I could, I started getting the following error messages popping up on the screen during startup and intermittently while the computer was running
    SYNTPENH.EXE (code 0cx0000142)
    RTHDVCPL.EXE
    MSASCUI.EXE
    PHOTOSCREENSAVER.SCR
    SHELLEXECUTEEXFAILED (code 3221225794)
one of the guys I work with suggested I uninstall Windows Live OneCare and restart the computer but when I tried I noticed the "change/remove programs" prompt was missing. Also, I was unable to open Word documents, Excel files, download programs from the internet, etc.
another coworker suggested it might be a virus or Trojan and attempted to connect his laptop to mine via a Belkin Easy Transfer Cable, thinking he would scan my hard drive remotely with the antivirus software on his computer and remove anything harmful. As soon as the cable was connected, it flashed an application error message on the screen of my Lenovo (I didn't see exactly what it said) and about 30 seconds later my screen went black.
Now, when I press the power button, the fan comes on, it starts to make noise, the CD drive will start to spool up (if there's a disc in it) but stops before actually doing anything. Doesn't seem to matter if it's plugged in or running on battery, none of the F keys seem to do anything during this time and the screen never comes on. I've tried running the boot disc that came with it but no luck there either.
I don't use this computer for much other than checking email when away from home, charging my phone and ipod and watching movies or doing paperwork on the plane. Unfortunately, I'm away from home a lot so it's pretty inconvenient to be without it!
If anyone has a suggestion I'd really appreciate the help! If you've already covered this someplace else, please forgive the repost. And sorry for the book, just not sure what info might be helpful.
    thanks in advance!
    Roger

    Ok, here's the results:
Tried plugged in but with battery out - no change
Unplugged, removed battery, held power button for 30 seconds, reinstalled battery, replugged - no change
Removed memory modules and reinstalled in original positions - no change
Removed modules and tried one at  a time in different positions - this did change things! One module had no change in either location, the other allowed the computer to start and run (back to the point of the original problems with the error messages and unable to open word docs, etc) in both locations. Installing the second (bad?) module in addition to the "good" module caused the computer to not start again, removed it and computer restarts fine.
So I'm guessing I need to replace the one apparently defective memory module and see if that takes care of the rest of the problems? Or is there something else I need to do to address the error messages and functionality issues?
And by the way, thanks for all the help!

  • Can't turn on my Lenovo 3000 N200

Hello, I've got a problem with my Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop.
Yesterday I used it without it's power supply, so it discharged. I let it charge, but none of the indicating power lights are lit up even though the power supply is good. It has now ''charged'' all night, but nothing has changed, no power lights and I can't turn it on. I'm confused, it's the first time when something like this happens, I haven't dropped it or anything it just completely discharged..
I already tried 2 times this trick when you remove the battery, push the power button for about 30 seconds and then put battery back in, but it didn't work.. :/
    Any ideas or it's dead?

could be power cord or mainboard issue due to "no power lights"
i believe you don't have valid warranty but is it possible to contact local support center? you'll need probably some more help to diagnose the problem.

  • Lenovo 3000 J115 Memory/RAM Problem

Hi everyone. According to the Lenovo website, the Lenovo 3000 J115 machine type 7387 is capable of 4GB of RAM. It has two DIMM slots and supports single or dual channel DDR2 memory. I really wanted to run with 4GB of RAM and it was a deciding factor when I bought the machine.
I purchased two 2GB DDR2 memory sticks, put them in the machine, and the BIOS only shows 2.5GB. The machine runs fine like this, its just not using the memory.  There doesnt seem to be anything in the BIOS to help me out with this. I saw some other people had similar issues with other manufacturers machines, but they only needed to enable something called Memory Remapping in the BIOS to fix the problem. There isnt this feature in my BIOS. I installed the latest BIOS hoping that it would help, but it didnt. I also tried a 2GB and a 1GB memory stick just to see what happens and it still shows 2.5GB even with 3GB of RAM installed.
Does anyone know how to get this machine to recognize 4GB of RAM, or even 3GB of RAM. I called support and at first they were trying to tell me it was a problem with Windows XP. Hmmm....I already told them I was running Windows Vista Home Premium. Which wouldnt matter anyway. If the BIOS doesnt see the memory, the OS wouldnt have anything to do with that. So how anyone could think it could be a problem with the OS is beyond me and flat out wrong. After explaining this and getting the team lead on the phone, they sent me out a new motherboard even though I was quite certain that wouldnt fix the problem, which it didnt. And now they are trying to tell me that it wont support 4GB of RAM after they cant think of anything else. The website says it does and that is why I bought the machine and the new memory, both of which I cannot return for a full refund.
Is there anyone else out there that ran into this? Anyone that has more than 2.5GB in their Lenovo 3000 J115? If yes, did you need to do anything special or did it just work.

The 3GB vs 4 GB limitation is actually a x86 issue, not operating system. A 32-bit system can only address 32 bits (4,096). There are a number of articles concerning this - Google 3GB vs 4 GB ram. Here is a link: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000811.html
The issue is basically a 32 Bit system can only address 4,096 of memory adressing. However in simple layman terms, the system must address all items on the bus like sound card, video, bios, pci bus, etc. (and the addressing of these items is like using memory).
Anyone familar with the old dos days remembers the software and memory managers we used to move the video, bios, etc above the 1 GB limitation, that way we had 640 KB Memory available for the applications.
Now several years later, we have hit the limit again, the 32-bit architectural now puts the addressing of items above the 3 GB level, leaving the lower 3 GB for memory use. So if 4 MB is installed, the 32-bit system addresses the computer components, then allocates what is left in the addressing range to the memory, thus why some systems with 4 GB do actually get 3.5 GB.
So on systems with 4 GB, with large memory video card and several other addressable items, it is percievable to only be able to use 3 GB. In fact, the recommendation with 32 Bit systems is to install 3 GB memory.
However, I do not know why the system wont recognize the installation in 3 GB mode only (have you installed only 3 GB total and see what it does?) My K100 system has 3 GB ram, (3) 1 GB sticks in 3 of the 4 memory slots. The system does recognize all 3 GB.
In fact, this addresses the reason Lenovo only put 3 GB in my system (I thought 3 GB was weird), because 4 GB would not all be addressed and the additional ram would be a waste of money.
Additional comments from users indicates that applications typically can only use the lower 2 GB anyway, thus leaving the last 1 GB for the OS (Vista). Unless you have applications that can use more Ram, the difficulty in getting the system to address the Ram differently wont gain you much.
And even a 64 Bit OS may not fix the issue, because some chipsets are only 32 Bit, thus addressing the components in the same method, which maybe why your system only see 2.5 GB at the bios level.
How much video memory you have? What do you have the allocation to the video memory set at in the bios?

  • Memory Upgrade for Lenovo 3000 Notebook N200 (Type 0769)

Hi I want upgrade my memory from 1Gb to 4Gb (x2 slices of 2Gb).

Ive tried two lots of memory from Mr Memory and both get stuck on the Lenovo boot screen. Ive tried all the combinations incl slots with same effect. Both pairs were not faulty as they tested ok at Mr Memory once returned.
Wondered if I need to upgrade the Bios or anythng else to run 2Gb or 4Gb of memory?
    Anyone else seen this problem?
Any help would be most gratefully received!

    hi yan_c,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
Have you tried to check the timings of the 2x2GB RAM if they are identical to the original 1GB RAM? You can use CPU-Z to check the timings of the 1GB RAM inside of Windows. As for the 2x2GB RAM, the timings should be in the packaging material.
    Sample timings:

    Source: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-3000-N200-Notebook.9088.0.html
It's possible that the Memory Reference Code under the BIOS can't initiate the RAM if it has different timings. Flashing the BIOS would be the second step in this scenario.
    Hope this helps.

  • Lenovo 3000 n200 Type: 0769 game graphics problem

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo 3000 n200 Type 0769 laptop which served me well at university with my 3D modelling in SolidWorks for my projects. However, when I tried to run games on it, the games always crash, even on a very low setting graphics setting which is extremely frustrating. The only game I have managed to run successfully with no problems is Football Manager (providing I dont use the 3d game play as when I do, like all other games I have tried, it crashes.). What do I need to upgrade to successfully run games on my laptop and also, (if it is only a new graphics card that is required) where can I find out which cards are compatible with my laptop?
Running games is the only problem I am finding with the laptop and any help anyone can give me will be very much appreciated as I see a few other people who have posted in the forum have had the same problem with no luck with help on here.
    Cheers.
    - Pete
PS. The games I have tried running with no success include; The Sims 2, Lord Of The Rings - Battle For Middle Earth 1 & 2, Command & Conquer Generals, Command & Conquer 3 and Warhammer Dawn Of War

I don't know about the desktops, but Lenovo laptops are the worst I have ever used. I have had mine nearly a year and the amount of problems I have had with it is rediculous, along with this problem, the hard drive has broken and needed to be replaced, the finger print scanner is broken and does not recognise the only finger prints that have been registered on the laptop, and now it has broken again and i cannot get passed the rescue and recovery screen. NO ONE should buy this laptop or any lenovo laptops like it, they are unbelievably unreliable!

Wow, thank you, what an awesome little tool!
So, I found that these 2 RAM products are compatible with my laptop:
    Part Number: CT758799
    Module Size: 2GB
    Package: 200-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR2 PC2-6400
    Specs: DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •
    Part Number: CT699699
    Module Size: 2GB
    Package: 200-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
    Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •
I then went to a well-known auction site and found RAM cards from the same manufacturer with exactly the same specs as above but with different Part numbers. Does it have to be the exact part number or do I stand a good chance of it working if it has the required spec? I searched for the exact part numbers and yielded 0 results.
Thanks for all your help on this.

  • Lenovo 3000 N200 graphic card memory problem

    Hello,
Ive recently bought a new Lenovo 3000 N200, which has a onboard graphic card Intel X3100 with 256MB (shareable) memory.
The problem is, it shows, in the Intel media graphic accelerator driver (under information) it has only 128MB.
This is a copy-paste of the info, the graphic driver shows me:
    DirectX* Version:        9.0
    Physical Memory:        2038 MB
    Minimum Graphics Memory:    8 MB
    Maximum Graphics Memory:    128 MB
Graphics Memory in Use:    10 MB
So i would like to know, how can i extend this shareable memory (tried in BIOS, but theres nothing there).
    Thanks in advance.

Okay, some of you people are using the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics rather than the Intel X3100 graphics chipset. The GMA 950 is supposedly to have the maximum shared v ram of 224 mb, but this is only accessable only when the ram is paired and also depends on the motherboard chipsetyou are using. This is also true for the Intel x3100 graphics chipset. However, the catch is that the shared vram is not the bottleneck, you can still play WoW if youwith all the graphics setting to low.

  • Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 ERG upgrade memory 1GB- 3GB only recognize 2GB

    I bought a Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 ERG with 1GB installed in first slot.
To get the system better work I wanted to expand the RAM.
As the spec's tell a maximum of 3GB should be possible.
    Thefore I added a 2GB mem-card.
I expected to see the I would have in total 3GB in use.
Now the system and BIOS tells that only 2GB is in use.
    I already checked:
    - startup with only 1GB works correct.
    - by adding the 2GB card the total value increased from 1 to 2 GB so the card is expected to be correct
       + systems works correct
    - only using the 2GB card gives problems, system doesnot recognize RAM at all.
On this forum I see some suggestions to place 2 x 2GB cards and Vista only recognizes 3GB.
Is someone aware that this may be a solution?
Does someone else have an other solution.
    Your help is very welcom.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 Startup Problem

    Hello,
    I recently installed a new harddrive which is a Samsung HM251JJ 250GB 7200rpm
Before I inserted the new harddrive I disconnected the the power supply and akku as mentioned.
I started the Laptop and after the message mouse initialized the System hangs... So I have no chance to get the Boot Menu to install the Operating System...
First I thought, might be a problem with the harddisk itself but I've run a full harddrive scan with serveral tools also from Samsung itself but all reported that the haddrive should work fine...
Next thing I did was a Bios update to the newest available version, which does not solved the problem.
Another Idea I got was installing another harddrive this time also a Samsung with 250GB but instead of 7200rpm it had 5400rpm that drive worked fine...
So I wonder if the Lenovo 3000 N200 does not support harddrives with a speed of 7200rpm???
    best regards

I once had a "wake" key stuck on a keyboard, and the computer kept re-booting!
I thought maybe the "one touch restore" button, or one of the F key could
    be stuck partially down.
Your computer problem is very strange, have not heard of that one before.
    Sorry to be no help.
