Memory problems on Satellite L30-101

I have a toshiba satellite l30-101 laptop and wanted to upgrade RAM, so i bought 2x 1GB sticks to put in it.
Now i couldnt find any 533mhz ones so i bought 2 667mhz after a spoke to a technical guy who said if i got 2 of same speed it would work fine.
Only it doesnt at all i can put one stick in and it runs fine with the 533mhz.
One i have in if i try and put both new sticks in it comes up with memory errors and I get the bsod which restarts my comp and would not allow me to run my games or other programs.
Is there anyway to make it so I can have both of the new sticks in as i really need the ram and dont want to buy diff ones.
I mean if I can get one to work other one should surely work right ?
please help im going mad trying to fix the damn thing

Hi
I think the memory speed has nothing to do with the BSOD!
In my opinion the BSOD appears due to the memory module malfunction!
Furthermore the L30-101 supports only the 533 Mhz FSB. In this case you will be not able to run the 667Mhz memory modules with full speed.
The modules will run only at 533Mhz!!!
So in my opinion you should replace the faulty module with a one which works fine!
Best regards

• CPU upgrade on Satellite L30-101

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite L30-101. I've upgraded the RAM successfully to 2GB (2x 1GB) but I'm finding it incredibly hard to get information on processor replacements.
The laptop has the latest BIOS on it (3.10-WIN - 19/02/08) but when trying to find information regarding whats in it I'm hitting brick walls. Firstly the site > http://www.toshiba-tro.de/biosinfo/ < doesn't have my laptop on it,
Product Type: Notebook
Family: Satellite
Product Series: Satellite L Series
Model: ? unknown
Short Model No: ? unknown
I did hope I could stick an Intel Duo in but with the ATI chipset, I'm pretty sure it wont work but again without knowing whats within BIOS, compatible.. I'm lost. The only processor I can find which may work, same package, FSB, socket is an Intel Core Solo Processor T1350 which kicks out 1.86 GHz, not a massive difference and I'm sure it can't be the only replacement option.
Could someone and staff please help me with getting hold of BIOS info and compatible processors for my laptop. The current Intel Celeron M Processor 410 kicking out 1.46 GHz isn't good enough for Vista (cert on laptop) and basic multi tasking. Its lagging way too much even after a good tune up, ram upgrade, HD upgrade to 7200RPM. I'm in need of a processor upgrade but as mention finding it incredibly hard to obtain information of which would be compatible.
Sincerely,
Gourcuff

Hello
In my opinion your attempt to replace CPU is wrong. Why? Satellite L30 is not designed to offer some fabulous performance and it is designed for everyday usage. Best evidence for this was the price. It was not so expensive.
Can you please tell us why do you want to have new CPU? Do you use some special software?
Back to CPU replacement. As you probably know mobile computers have limited upgrade options and it is related to RAM and HDD upgrade. It is definitely unprovided for CPU upgrade and it is not supported. Specific design, especially cooling system is designed for certain CPU.
Due to all this you will not be able to find any relevant info about CPU replacement.
Check please this Toshiba document - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm

• Memory upgrade problems on Satellite L30-134

I have just bought 2 x 1GB memory PC4200 for my L30-134 and installed them they work fine in BIOS, show up and read as they should do, but when windows is booting up it will crash with both modules installed, only ever gets to the screen with the loading bar going across and then I get blue screen.
Forgot to make a note of the error code I am afraid... (Fool I know). If I remove one of the modules and install the original 512 module with just 1 of the 1GB ones it will work fine. BIOS has been updated to the latest 3.10 version and still I get the same problem...
because all seems fine from within BIOS I am thinking that its more likely to be a software (windows) problem of some kind maybe some corrupt data in the registry or a virus maybe... has anybody any ideas?
Also, the laptop is actually my step sons and he really wants to have the CPU upgraded from the Celeron 410 to one that's a little faster. When first looking into this we was told that several CPUs were compatible (although not really worth the hassle of installing) they were cel m 450 2 GHz, pent dual core t2060 and t2080, and also the core duo t2250,so he bought the t2250,and no surprises it wouldn't work, or should I say it powered up with no display and the shut off and just epeated the cycle. So did not take a genius to work out it wasn't compat...
I know the t2080 are used in the L30's and are 1.73 533 FSB with 1MB L2 cache- 65nm and do stepping. The t2250 is identical apart from the L2 cache is 2MB and the stepping varies from do to mo depends when u bought it... seeing as ow he already has the CPU he's gonna sell it on and use the cash to buy the one that will work. If anybody has any info that could help make sure that he does not end up going round in circles I would really appreciate it...
Oh and just to make you all laugh it was Toshiba tech line staff member that told him that the CPU would work and that the L30 was able to take 2 x 1GB memory and never once mentioned that there may be issues with both upgrades...
Issues as in neither soddin work....lmao

Hi!
The specs. you posted are correct. Xpress 200 could support dual channel: "Variants available with single or dual channel system memory support ". But there is nothing about dual channel mode in Xpress 200M specs. I have identical modules, but EVEREST doesn't say the modules are running in dual channel mode. So I think the info you found on the website gives the answer, but here are some explanation from Wikipedia to clarify the definitions:
*Dual-channel:*
"Dual-channel-enabled memory controllers utilize two 64-bit data channels, resulting in a total bandwidth of 128-bits, to move data from RAM to the CPU. In order to achieve this, two or more DDR/DDR2 SDRAM memory modules must be installed into matching banks, which are usually color coded on the motherboard. These separate channels allow each memory module access to the memory controller, increasing throughput bandwidth."
*DDR:*
"DDR SDRAM or double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory is a class of memory integrated circuit used in computers. It achieves greater bandwidth than the preceding single data rate SDRAM by transferring data on the rising and falling edges of the clock signal (double pumped). Effectively, it doubles the transfer rate without increasing the frequency of the memory bus."
*DDR2:*
"Like DDR before it, DDR2 cells transfer data both on the rising and falling edge of the clock (a technique called "dual pumping"). The key difference between DDR and DDR2 is that in DDR2 the bus is clocked at twice the speed of the memory cells, so four words of data can be transferred per memory cell cycle. Thus, without speeding up the memory cells themselves, DDR2 can effectively operate at twice the bus speed of DDR."
*UMA (Unified Memory Architectrue):*
"In computer architecture, Shared Memory Architecture (SMA) refers to a design where the graphics chip does not have its own dedicated memory, and instead shares the main system RAM with the CPU and other components."

• Memory upgrade on Satellite L30

I have a Satellite L30-11D and I am wanting to upgrade the memory modules in it, I have found this;
Part Number: PA3411S-2M1G
1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2-4300 DDR2 (533MHz)
and it will work but im unsure on this - can you have more than one plugged into my laptop?
Please help!!!

Of course you can do more then one memory module. On your Satellite notebook there are two slots available and you can put two memory modules. Your notebook can handle with max 2 GB of RAM.
According the notebook specification you should have now 512 MB of RAM. New 1GB module put in place where is now placed 512 MB module and old one put into empty slot.
If you need more assistance please write again.

• Memory upgrade for Satellite L30-134

I have a Satellite L30-134 which appears to be running quite slowly - I think due to large amount of photos and itunes music.
I am wondering which is the easiest way to resolve - buy a memory upgrade (no idea how to change the memory though) or get an external hard drive?
And if I change the memory will I lose what is already saved on the laptop?

I agree with Ganz the bigger HDD will not improve the performance but only increase the available HDD space it would helps you to store more music and pic files on the HDD ;)
The memory upgrade would also not bring an performance boost of course the performance would be a little bit better because the most stuff would be handled directly in the memory and not temporally on the HDD but generally its not really noticeable.
Anyway if you want to upgrade the memory check this:
http://www.orcalogic.co.uk/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=25737&ft=m&st=3
You have to use DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) 200-PIN SODIMM

• Memory upgrade problem on Satellite L30-11D

Hi all
I am trying to update the memory from 512MB to 2GB.
I used Crucial's memory tester and ordered memory: 2X 1GB DDR2 667 CL5
I can use either chip in either memory slot but not both chips at the same time
I have updated the BIOS
Any ideas?
Cheers, rofleuk

Maybe you should use compatible DDR2 533 MHz modules. Compatible RAMs for this models are 1 GB with part number PA3411U-1M1G.

• OS installation problem with Satellite L30 (PSL33E)

Hi all.
So I have been given a laptop by my firiend to fix. Now what he has told me is this. He was playing a game and the laptop froze. He held down the power button and restarted the laptop. Upon restarting the laptop it said windows recovered from a serious error. After this he could log back onto his computer. So he used the toshiba restore cd but this only fixed the problem for a short while.
Now when he gave it to me I booted it and as it tried to load vista it says there a missing file: wdsuti.dll and i got an ErrorCode:0x3E7. I looked this error up and from there I formatted the drive and tried a fresh install of vista.
Vista installed fine to the point where it asks for a restart as soon as it restarted it failed to load again.
Now I've tried other disc's like the XP disc I ahve to install XP and then use the vista upgrade disc but the same thing happens.
At the moment im trying another installation of vista. It has installed vista but is running very very slow and took forever to install. Upon its first boot it crashed and came up with this error message:
Windows Failed To Start
file: windows\system32\config\system
status: 0xc00000e9
Now Im stumped with a PC im fine as I can take the parts out and swap them etc.
My guess the hard drive is dying.
Am I right or could it be another problem?
Any help would be much appriciated.
EDIT: Also to note I did reset the BIOS to default settings and I am now currently running Windows memory diagnostics tool.

Hi Richard
I agree with you and think it can be because of hard disc. I have had similar problem on my old Satellite notebook. Suddenly the notebook was slower and slower. I was able to install OS but after short time I have noticed the same.
I have checked HDD and there were so many defective sectors. I presume the same situation is with this notebook. To avoid service try to obtain some used HDD for test purposes.
Sorry but I do not have other idea what you can do.

• EMS memory problem on Satellite M40X

Hello.
I'am new user sat. m40x-116. I must use EMS and XMS memory in MS-DOS based programs. But now it's not be. I look with MEM command in dos mode, and my programs messeage is "OUT OF MEMORY". I changed windows xp home to xp pro. But it's negative too. But my all desktop PC and old notebook isn't those problem. I don't understand this problem. I must solve this problem.
Thank you
[Edited by: admin on 09-Jun-05 14:21]

Hello
As far as I know the newest notebooks are created for using WXP and not for using old MS-DOS based applications. You know very well that MS-DOS dont exist any more in the old form and it can not be used successfully.
Architecture on new notebooks is construed or designed for NT technology and not for old MS-DOS technology.
In my opinion you should try to find a windows version of your old MS-DOS based program (if exists).
Good luck!

• Satellite L30-113 Memory Problem

I have a Satellite L30-113 that is not reporting the correct
memory size.
The system was supplied with 512Mb and I have installed an additional 1Gb
Stick but for some reason windows is only reporting 896Mb installed, and the Graphics card
is using 128Mb. The BIOS is also reporting that only 896Mb of ram is installed.
When I run system Info for windows it only detects the 1GB module installed
although if i remove one memory module and have either the 512 or 1GB installed
it works fine.
I have also installed the latest BIOS and this doesn’t seam to
have had any affect.
Also both memory sticks have been tested in an other laptop so i know they both work.
Are there any issues with mixing memory sizes in these laptops or do the memory
sticks have to be matched sizes?
The OS is Windows XP Pro

I don't agree, because usually L30 supports not only the same modules. One of my friends has 512mb Hynix and 1gb Kingmax in his L30 installed, and has no problem with it. There's a guy in another topic how uses 533mhz and 667mhz modules together, and he also has no problem. So I think you should choose the modules carefully and I recommend the same modules too, but it doesn't mean you couldn't use different modules in L30. Mostly you should care about the manufacturer, for example Kingmax, Kingston, Corsair, Samsung, Hynix could be a good choice. I'm sure there are another good brands too, but as I see usually there are no compatibility problems with these modules.

• Satellite L20-101: Question about memory modules mixing PC2-4300 and PC2-4200

Hello
I have Toshiba Satellite L20-101. It has onboard 512MB RAM (PC2-4300). Today I added another RAM module but this new module is PC2-4200. Is there anything wrong doing this? Both modules are DDR2 and 533MHz and 512MB.

Hi Pawel,
In principle there is no problem with mixing RAM modules of slightly different types but normally the total RAM will only run at the speed of the slower module. If your notebook recognises the correct amount of RAM from both sticks then there will ne no problem.

• Problems with Ethernet controller and PCI device driver on Satellite L30-10X

Hellow!
Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Russia.
Just few days ago I bought Satellite L30-10X with W Vista on board. My opinion, that this OS does't very good on this computer, so I install W XP.
I have some problems with drivers. At first, I dont know what model I have:PSL30 or PSL33? I download all drivers for both models. But, after installation, computer doen't find drivers for Ethernet controller and PCI device...

Hi
Satellite L30-10X belongs to the PSL33E series. This number can be found on the label placed on the bottom of the unit!
You have to choose this number from the driver download form to get the compatible XP drivers.
I dont know why you are not able to install the LAN driver. Ive got the same notebook with Vista and Ive installed the XP and all drivers run fine.
I assume you have installed the drivers in wrong order. Please take the look in the Toshiba installation instruction txt file. In this order you have to install the driver! Its important.
I think you should install the XP again to ensure the clean registry and then download and install the compatible XP drivers like mentioned in the installation instruction file.
Good luck

• Satellite 2430-101: USB 2.0 External HDD problem

Hallo Everybody,
I have Toshiba satellite 2430-101. I recently bought external 40GB hard disk. When I connected to my toshiba usb hub, it says it exceeds the limit of power suppy and I need to detach the external hard disc. When I read from recent questions, somebody suggested to uncheck the power options to the usb hub, but still it says the same. Are they anybody to help me.
Regards

Hello Sri
Has the USB hub own power supply? If yes I hope that you have tested it with and without power supply.
Can you use HDD if you connect it directly to the Satellite notebook?

• RAM Upgrade on Satellite L30-11D

My brother has a Satellite L30-11D and he has bought an additional 2GB RAM to upgrade from 512MB.
HE has sent me an email - extract below, but does not get regular access to Internet and therefore no time to post this.
My laptop had 512 MB ram and I was told by Toshiba etc that it could be upgraded to 2 GB. I obtained 2 x 1 GB cards installed them.
The problem is that if I remove the 512 MB card the laptop doesn't see the GB cards at all, so I put the 512 card back in and that was OK, then I put a 1GB card in and that worked OK, thinking it might be a dud card I triedthe other card plus the 512 and that works.
Also if I put either one of the GB cards on their own in it works.
According to Toshiba the computer can be upgraded to 2 GB RAM - so what am I doing wrong.
Any ideas would be appreciated."

Hi
I googled and found this Satellite L30-11D specification page:
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=UK&com.broadvis ion.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=128130
According to this page the Sat L30-11D can be upgraded to 2GB RAM (2 x 1GB)
You should use the 200pin DDR2 RAM (533 MHz) modules.
I think the notebook does not recognize the 2GB RAM due to the compatibility issues You should try RAM modules from another manufacturer. Maybe Kingston would be ok.
