Memory ? & Program transfers? OS Mt. Lion Backup disk

Have several IMac's (5) 22" all intel duo core, (3) mini Macs duo core, (2) 24" Duo's. (1) 27", (1) MacBook Pro 17" duo.  Do each of these units have their own set of rules to memory upgrades? Currently I'm trying to find out 24" which are DDR2 to 27" being DDR3 can I interchange?
2) Is there anyway to copy my programs or must I do a clean install on each, 1 being CS5 collection?
3) Mt. Lion be backuped onto a flash drive, jump drive, CD or any reusable access to load on other units without paying $20 for each unit? If so how do you do it?
What happened to the old get a hard copy with purchase?

I'll answer what I can.
1. No, you cannot exchange different types of memory. Macs are very picky about ram and if you don't use the correct ram you're asking for problems. To see exactly which Mac requires which ram the quality vendors such as Crucial and OWC have tools that will tell you what you need and offer you the options.
2. Cannot speak to CS5. You should probably check the license agreements for each software package to see if you can install on more than one machine.
3. Mountian Lion, as are all Mac App Store purchase, are tied to your Apple id. Buy it once and it can be installed on every Mac you OWN. With the App Store approach Apple stopped providing physical discs, other vendors are starting to follow suit.

please help me ,i forgot the synchronising password for my mac pro lion backup disk

If the backup volume is encrypted, and you forgot the password, then you'll have to erase the volume and start a new backup. There's no way to recover the password.

The set up program is running since two hours and it says it will take 9 days to backup about 56 GB.

The new HD is a WD My Passport Edge 500 GB capacity
5 hours to do 6 GB of transfer is NOT normal, even for USB 2.0 so there's something wrong here. I'd say cancel it, wipe the drive and then test the integrity of the drive. Do some file transfers over to and see if it's behaving normally. It could be a bad USB cable, it could be a bad drive or bad enclosure. As it's new, I suspect you haven't really put it through its paces yet and it's important to do that first before commissioning it to serve as your "reliable backup."

  • I loaded in Lion - but my time capsule will not back up. I get an message: couldn't complete backup due to a network prolem. Also it says "make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network, and that the backup disk is turned on.

I installed Lion on my Mac Pro laptop. Regarding Time Capsul - I get a messaage as follows: couldn't complete backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network and that the  backup disk is turned on. Then try again to back up. I have time capsul turned on. bill

I have exactly same problem with my MBP and MBA, after upgrading to Lion. I've tried to fix this issue while cheking key chain issues and network setup, even formating hdd and time capsule firmware upgrade (ver. 7.6.1.). Nothing can help. It is very annoying.

  • HT3275 Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP feat

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • Time Capsule "looking for backup disk" problems, running Lion on 24" iMac

    Hi,
I'm having problems with my Time Capsule.  I can't get the backups to run for about a week.  The backup just says "looking for backup disk" for ever.  This is a first gen Time Capsule, and it's still working fine for two MacBooks in the house.  I have all the Apple updates installed, and I'm running 10.7.2.  In Preferences, Time Capsule, I can see the available/of space and there is plenty left.  It's not showing any Oldest and Latest date info for backups.
If I go to "select disk" and choose the Time Capsule, I'm prompted for the password.  When I press "Connect", the message changes to "Stopping Backup" and this will run for ever.  I have plenty of disk space available, have repaired permissions, have booted in safe mode, reset pram and nvram and probably a few other options to no avail.  I can enter the Time Machine and see all of my backups without problem.
As a side note, I have also noticed instability whereby various programs have been 'not responding' of late, and need to be force quit.  Once that happens, the iMac won't properly shut down and restart; I usually need to how down the power button.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm having the same problem.  Anyone have a fix?

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

  • Why is Time machine saying backup disk disconnected? Using MBP 17" Lion 10.7

Why is Time machine saying backup disk disconnected? Using MBP 17" Lion 10.7

Do you have an external drive connected?
If you do has it gone into sleep mode? There is a setting in the OS to put drives to sleep if they aren't being used. Energy Saver "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".
Also most external drives have a built in sleep function that if they aren't being accessed for a period of time they go to sleep by themselves.

Since upgrading my Macbook to Lion, the time machine backups are failing - error message: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Jackie Scanlon's Time Caps/Jacqueline Drabczynska’s MacBook.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."  I have rebooted the TIme Capsule and it worked OK, but don't want to do that every time.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

    Any new info on this?
I had the exact same problem and went crazy and spent a hecka lot of time trying to deal with my brand new 2TB Time Capsule and almost brand new MacBook Pro.  Then I thought I fixed it...and I tried SO MANY things, I don't really know what did it...except taking out any apostrophe's in names of stuff that Apple puts in there...BUT...now it's back.
    Grrr...

  • Time machine backup problem with upgrade to Lion - Choose Backup Disk button non-existant

Hi, I just upgraded my mac mini to Lion and have encountered a problem with by Time Machine. It no longer sees my networked drive for back up. So, I followed the instructions on this site http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/ and get to item 6b. and have a problem I have not been able to sort out. Instead of the button "Choose Backup Disk" on the Time Machine window, I have a button "Select Disk" with a button "Options" under it. When I click "Select Disk" I get a window promtping me to "Set Up Other Time Capsule" and clicking that takes me to a window for AirPort Utility. (screen shot )
Anyone know why I don't have the right button for starters and why I can't access any drives on my machine at all? I followed the web instructions on the site I mention above because initially I had an error about AFP, so suspected the drive set up here (it is my work) is incompatible.
(The only IT guy we have is on vacation for 2 weeks and then I am on vacation for 2 weeks and can't wait a month in order to back up! Thought I would try here to see if I can get answers before I am away.)
    Thanks in advance!

i had a similar problem when I first installed Lion last year.  It seems that some network NAS products need a firmware update to work with Lion.  I contacted the manufacturer and they helped me out.  I am using a Synology NAS system.  Problem solved after firmware update.

  • Time Machine Backups disk not automatically unmounting after backup completes in Lion

I am using Time Machine over WiFi on a 3rd party USB drive shared as an AirDisk through an Airport Extreme router. Ever since switching to Lion (clean install), I have noticed that the Time Machine backup disk will not automatically unmount after a backup is completed. This creates a problem when my MacBook Pro comes back from sleep. Specifically, the WiFi notification icon in the Finder toolbar indicates that WiFi is connected, even though it's not connected to a network, and I am unable to connect to any networks for what seems like several minutes until the Time Machine backups disk disappears from the desktop and WiFi actually connects.
Since the disk was not cleanly unmounted, Time Machine then keeps complaining that the sparse bundle file is locked and cannot be mounted every time it tries to do a backup. I have to either disconnect/reconnect the USB drive physically from the router, or restart the router every time this happens to resolve the issue. That is getting really annoying to have to do every time. I suppose I could manually unmount the Time Machine disk after every backup but it's ridiculous to have to do that every time I want to put the computer to sleep.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue and is there a fix?

For others who might be having this problem - I was able to resolve it by connecting my backup disk to my mac via USB, completely erasing it, and starting over from a new backup. Disk Utility was not reporting any errors when I verified the disk, but I went ahead and repartitioned it and started fresh. The disk now automatically unmounts after backups complete.
