Memory question crucial/owc/Apple

Ok, first off let me clear the air and say that I've been a long time crucial user in all of my computers and have not been disapointed but now with my impending promac arrival, well not until septemeber. I'm not so sure about crucial
I read someone (I failed to recall where now) that apple recommends its memory modules for the MacPro because of the heat sinks it uses is designed specficially with the cooling archtecture of the MP. I understand that OWC (and Crucial) has heat sinks on theirs but they may not be the same.
Second, while crucial appears not have any memory for the MP yet they have not that much cheaper in prices then apple lately. A dark horse in this is OWC, while cheaper I worry about the heat sinks and of course quality.
I'm a big believer in you get what you pay for.
I'm really only interested in getting an additional gig to bring the MP up to 2 gig. I'm a medium Aperture and low to medium photoshop user. I found 2 gig to be the sweet spot on my PPC mac's but I understand that may not be the case for intel macs. Budget is the over-riding factor for only getting a single gig.
Apple prices:
1 gig kit 300,
2 gig kit 700 (yikes)
OWC:
1 gig of ram 419 (buying the 2gig kit and trading in the install 1gig for a credit of 140) I don't seem to see a 1 gig kit at owc.
2 gig 559.
crucial
1 gig ????
2 gig???
they appear not have memory for the MP yet.
Any advice or suggestions would be welcome. Budget and peace of mind is of high improtance. I generally have to pay a little more (key word little) for peace of mind and get crucial but they seem to be getting expensive. When I purhcased my mini, their memory was the same price as apple's so I had apple install the memory (it didn't help that the mini's memory isn't considered user resplaceable) as a CTO option.

AccelerateYourMac has been on top of this story (OWC sponsered site) with notes from Crucial that they needed to do more work and they do have a close relationship with Apple (obviously).
Micron has had DDR2 'bleeding edge' memory in the 800 and 1000MHz range for the serious gamer / enthusiast / OC'er crowd.
Someone did get some early Crucial RAM before they stopped shipping, and it worked, but noted that the top riser seems to be get more airflow and run cooler.
Do you remember when the G5 first came out and what the prices looked like this time 2003? Initial prices of $400 per GB as I recall before dropping to $120 and below. There were also some problems the following summer when the next gen G5s came out and there were some compatibility issues mixing from different vendors or sources, or even different batch variations from the same source. Or that some RAM that seemed to work fine previously "broke" or caused trouble ("marginal RAM"? though more a catch-all phrase).
Also, OWC was carrying more expensive Samsung for the last year and is now carrying some Micron labeled chips as well as "OWC label" (house brand?).
I'm waiting for Oct/Nov for things to settle out and for any 'rev 2' changes, as well as avoiding early production problems.

  • Memory Question for G4 Cube

In accordance with recommendations on a previous question here I have ordered OS 10.4.6 from Apple to install on my Cube. The Apple rep said it would work with the 384 MB ram I now have in the computer. I think I will add more memory though and the Apple rep advised I visit <www.crucial.com> to get it as Apple no longer stocks memory for the Cube. The spec for memory in the Cube manual says to use "PC-100" synchronous DRAM (SDRAM). The crucial.com site recommended a 512MB chip that says it is "PC-133" and implies it will work, guarantied. Will it?
It will be 2 weeks at least before Apple will ship the OS 10.4.6 package as it is on backorder. I know I will have some questions on installation when I get it.
    JTB

PC133 RAM is usually less expensive than PC100. The cube has 3 slots, and the max you can install is 3 x 512 megs. If all three slots are already filled, you will have to remove one of the modules and replace it with the 512 you plan to buy. I would personally stick with PC100, particularly if the modules that will remain are PC100.
I usually buy my RAM from Ramdirect. Their prices are competitive, and they have always stood behind what they sell - there is a lifetime guarantee. I will recommend them without reservation.

(I have no relationship with the company, other as a satisfied customer.)
Installing the RAM is dead easy, but you might want to download a service manual.

  • Memory Question "4x1 Gig or 2x2 Gig?" what is faster?

Memory Question "*4x1 Gig or 2x2 Gig*?" what is faster?
I'm still don't know if witch to choose?
4 times 1 gigabyte Ram Memory is cheaper but if I choose for 2 times 2 GB Ram I can always beef it it later.
And is my memory faster if I'm using 4 slots with 1 gig over 2 slot with 2 gig?
I'm asking this question because I think using 4 times the memory bandwidth will be faster?

    Hello Jan
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The iMac (Late 2009): Installing or replacing memory article and your User's Guide are pretty clear, they both say that +"You can use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot."+ and not 1GB modules. > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3918
To upgrade your ram you will want at least 2 more 2 or 4GB modules and add that to the current 2 x 2GB of ram. > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/DDR321.527

I suggest you get 9.2.  You need to install the same or later version of the OS.  One some computer the shipped version has extra drivers.  The drivers will not be in the official release in this case 9.1.  They would be in 9.2.
Mac OS 9.1 (Mac OS ROM 7.5.1) and Mac OS X 10.0.4 (4P13)
    *blinking question mark*
The blinking question mark means that your mac firmware could not find a valid operating system
on one of your disk volumes.
Somethings to do to resolve the blinking question mark.

Try holding down the option key then power on.  This brings up the startup manager.  Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
    What is firmware?
The firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down command+option+o+f
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1 or later version of Mac OS Classic.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the Mac OS 9 updates from the Apple site.

  • Memory question on Arch x86_64. 2x2048 MB = 3950 MB?

I have a naive memory question for some knowledgeable folks.  My machine has 2x2 Gb sticks which should total to 4096.  When I do a free -m under Arch, it's only showing 3950.  Is the remaining 146 reserved or..?
    $ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 3950 422 3528 0 28 157
    -/+ buffers/cache: 236 3714
    Swap: 2000 0 2000

Thats a really good question and the result you get is normal as far as I know.
Part of it (a small part I believe) is used by the kernel, the rest of it, and this is where things are not so clear, is reserved as an agp apperture.
As far as I could tell (I have stumbled uppon that too) the problem seems to be that some bioses don't setup everything as they should.
The thing is that some devices can only handle 32bit addresses so their address is somewhere until the 4GB mark, because the bios doesn't setup the memory remapping correctly (sometimes the user has no way set anything related to memory remapping, this seems to be the case with some desktop boards and most notebooks/laptops). This memory remapping "problem" was anticipated and there are ways to properly handle that.
For some reason unknown to me (and most people that have stumbled upon this) many bioses don't setup (or allow the setup) of proper remapping. To add to the problem the kernel seems to reserve 128MB of agp aperture by default even if you don't have an agp card, this reserved address space falls in the first 4GB of addressing space therefore stealing you some memory.
I have tried to regain those MB, I have tried to recompile the kernel with a different config and I've tried several kernel boot parameters and the only thing I could regain was 64MB if I recall correctly. I can't find now what I have added to regain those 64MB, I didn't keep that option in the kernel line, 64MB were not worth the possibility of having problems later on.
I know its a pain to have that voice in the back of your head telling you that there is some memory that is being wasted, specially if you have tried a 32bit kernel with support for 64GB of address space and got 4050 MB of usable memory, but just leave it as it is, it's not worth the time and the trouble.

I am being prompted to enter security questions when making a purchase on my new IPad.  I don't believe I have ever setup security questions on my apple id.  I have tried logging into my apple id and have chosen the security and priviacy settings to set up security questions.  However I am prompted to enter answers to security questions and am told they don't match.  How to I create new security questions or reset them?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • Flashing Question Mark & Sad Apple Logo

I had my Mac for quite some time and everything seem to be going well until yesterday, when I pressed the power key all it showed was a white screen and the apple logo, I had called Tech and they said i was out of warrenty, but informed me that it would best to load the Mac OS X cd when I loaded and reached the select a destination part I saw my hard drive with an explanation point. she stated this was bad and that i would need to compeltely whipe the hard drive which didnt bother me. I went to Disk Utilities and chose my hards drive clicked options and choose to zero all data, also clicked download OS 9 drives. After waiting for about an hr it was completed, and i gave it a volume and went on with the installation i choose the volume and all seemed well. yet, after the computer rebooted and all i saw was a Flashing Question Mark & Sad Apple Logo. not quite sure what this means but checked other threads and followed some of the advised given to repair this, yet for me it doesn't work, as of now i tried erasing all data again but now it seems i can't set a volume. Not 100% percent sure which OS cd i have i will double check and reply later, I have a powerbook G4. any help would be great.
      Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Richard,
I was hoping you'd respond Thanks to the link to S.M.A.R.T reporter, but things have deteriorated since my last post and now it won't boot up at all.
I hit the power button, hear the start-up chime, then nothing but eerie silence and a gray screen.
The lack of noise usually created by a HD spinning up should be obvious that this is indeed a hard drive issue, but I want to make sure I can sound intelligent when throw myself at the guy who replaced the drive.
I tried booting from a 10.3 install cd (holding down 'c' at startup) to run Disc Utility but it won't even do that. I can hear the cd-rom spinning, reading the disc, but after a while it just gives up. In fact, I think if I listen hard enough, I can hear the faintest sound of mocking laughter....
Is this painfully, obviously, a hard drive gone bad?
It's not the end of the world, just very aggravating.

  • Question on the Apple Policy Payment

    Hello all,
i'm iphone apps dummy. i really don't know about the terms and condition from apple.
A company I work with is considering to create a e-commerce service apps for iPhone users. My concerns are apple/itunes will charges us when customer buy our product? it's there anyway to avoid the charges 30% payment from apple?
If i use web based 3rd party payment gateway direct to our own website, will apple remove our itunes apps?
Another Issue is will apple allow top up via Iphone apps, don't want to get into the complications with Iphone Apps policy payment? Example, customer will top up as credit on our website, then customer buy our product using our credit on iphone apps? will that legal?
Please send me the link apple policy regarding on the e-commerce payment. thanks so much... i'm dying to look for the policy in apple site.

Why cant I post my question on the apple website?

I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8 with iTunes installed. Now my iPhone 4S is no longer recognized in iTunes. Connecting the iPhone with USB sends me directly to the MS app that downloads pictures from the iPhone. Suggest this is a question of missing Apple driver for Windows 8, iTunes and iPhone. MS does not care! This seems to be a general problem with Windows 8 that a number of drivers that used to work with Windows 7 now do not work, ie. iPhone to iTunes, HTC to HTCSync, Samsung to Kies etc. I need this connection to work in order to syncronize with Outlook and my iTunes library.

Another user had success doing the following:
I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
"done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
    Good Luck friends!
