Memory questions concerning Mid 2010 Nehalem 4-core

I have a Mid 2010 Nehalem 4 core Mac Pro - the base $2499 model which I purchased to upgrade from a Dual 1.8 GHz G5 (which still works great as a media center).
The G5 had 4 GB of memory which was sufficient. The new Mac Pro came with only 3 GB and I found myself hitting swap.
I found online a good deal for a 4 GB module, Kingston KTA-MP1066/4G. I installed the module in slot 4, but the "memory utility" notified me that it was better to put the 4 GB module in slot 2 and move the 1 GB to slot 4.
So I did that and booted again and memory utility said this was the best configuration.
I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to get two more of the 4 GB modules, so I could run in "triple channel" mode. The problem is that I've read conflicting things about triple channel in the base model $2499 Mac Pro. One site said that it didn't matter. Most of the sites seem to be focused on the more powerful (read: more expensive) Mac Pros.
Obviously, I'm already running faster if I'm not hitting swap, but I expect as the years go on I'll gradually use more and more memory as I did with the G5 (going from 1.25 GB, to 2 GB, to 3 GB, and finally 4 GB). I might as well deck it out now and enjoy the triple channel speed - if my machine really even supports it...

I don't run CS5 or anything like that. The Mac Pro is actually more Mac than I need, but I tend to overbuy and then hold on to a machine for a very long time. I'd still be using the G5 if not for Intel only software. I expect to hold onto this Mac for at least 6 years. I figure that's cheaper than buying two weaker iMacs in the same time span, and this Mac Pro will probably still be faster than iMacs released 3 years from now.
I ran some benchmarks, and it seems that the memory is a little slower with 7 GB in this arrangement, when compared to the stock 1 x 3 GB. However, I think not hitting swap (and possibly the extra caching) more than make up for this slight decline. In the future I can pick up additional Kingston 4 GB sticks (probably at an even cheaper price). The one I got seems to be specific for the Mac Pro with the thermal sensor, etc.

Thanks, the write-up was informative, But it do not answer for my question, that is where to look for serial # on my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 White Unibody Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz 13.3"? Its not on bottom-case and the above article does not mention this model?

Click on the Apple and then on about this Mac. In the new window, click on the "version 10.9.2" until you see the serial number displayed.

  • Memory upgrade on mid 2010 MacBook pro 13.3"

I decided it was time to upgrade the original 4GB memory in my mid 2010 2.4 ghz core 2 duo 13.3 inch MacBook pro and bought a 2X4GB pack from PNY. Unfortunately the memory is not reconized and my laptop doesn't start when using both 4 GB sticks. However when I use only either one of the new 4GB and one of the old 2GB sticks it does start up and reconizes 6 GB of memory. So both new sticks are reconized separately just not together. I tried reinstalling the two 4GB sticks together multiple times to ensure they were installed properly. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

The problem is your memory.  It's not the correct kind.  You need to purchase another brand that is known to work in Macs, of which PNY is not.  Dual ranked dual channel memory of good quality is what's suggested.  Crucial or Corsair is your best bet.  Cheap memory you find at retail stores won't work 100% of the time.  Another user who bought cheap Kingston memory like you had exactly the same problem.  Each module would work fine paird with an older one for max 6GB, but both new 4GB modules wouldn't work together.

My bad Eric. The startup preference recognizes the primary as a 10.8.3 startup volume but when u select it the system does not boot. I can only boot from my external backup drive

  • Memory Upgrade on Mid 2010 imac

    Hi
I just want to expand my iMac's 4GB to 6GB, but simply just adding 2GB on a slot is said it won't support dual-channel, slows performance, so my idea is 2x1GB for the slots, but the Documentation said that the iMac will only support 2GB and 4GB. Mmm, still does 1x2GB still work? Anyone tried? Because I don't need 2x2 GB RAMs, ending up with 8GB- too much. 6GB will just fit.
    Thanks

Just surf to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2010/DDR321.527 and make your decision.
Memory prices are stupidly low right now.

  • Questions about Mid-2010 Mac Pro graphics card upgrades

Hey guys and gals, so I've been searching the web for any PCI-E Mac and Windows Compatible graphics cards. I currently have the stock ATI Radeon 5770. From the sites and resources I've found, I'm set on the EVGA GTX680 Mac Edition but I also heard about the different cards you can use if you "flash" them. I have a few questions: 1. Are there any more recent lists with compatible cards 2. is flashing worth it and how difficult is it. I am moderately tech savey. 3. what websites are trustworthy besides OWC and Newegg.
    Thanks

  • A lot of beach balls - Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010

    Problem description:
    Hi, I have a MacPro 5,1 Mid 2010.
    6 core 3.33ghz
    24GB OWC RAM 1333mhz
OWC Mercury PRO 256GB SSD installed in 2nd optical slot w/ Yosemite
OWC Mercury Electra 480Gb for Bootcamp in slot 1
    3 ST31000340NS 1TB, 2 in Raid 0; all HFS journaled.
Unchecked “Put hard disks to sleep”
I constantly have the beach balls in lots of apps, seems like the computer is freezing frequently. I'm posting the logs that come out most often, and also a full startup log.
I was upgrading from an Imac 27” i5 mid 2011 that was noticeably faster… Which is strange considering the power of this Mac Pro.
Any ideas? I read a lot on apple support forums so I’m also including etrecheck log
    Thank you!
**Update** I think I found part of the problem; I removed all my fonts from Suitcase Fusion 5; It seems like my suitcase fonts are corrupting Font Book (threw a lot of font errors in console), but I need those fonts for graphic desing; Is there another way of adding them than copying the SuitcaseFusion.Fontvault File?
Though I still have occasionnal beach balls from clicking and opening apps.

    Thanks for your help!

You have turned OFF GateKeeper, thereby eliminating the protection built into Mac OS X from non-signed downloads. Legitimate downloads from registered developers are signed with their registered signatures, and stuff that is not signed should not be downloaded onto a system you appear to be using for business purposes.
So many entries in the Hosts file sometimes indicates the installation of pirated software.  You have a number of very invasive and quite questionable items kernel extensions installed on your Mac, and do not appear to be keeping them up-to-date.
Why do you need aftermarket key mapping software Karabiner? Mac OS X has key mapping built in.
If you insist on using third-party VPN, you should use one that is up-to-date. I expect some of the XPC errors are coming because of your antique VPN software.

So my quick assessment is that your Mac is unstable because you have added too much Junk. [Junk is defined as stuff that is perfectly good, but you do not happen to need right now, such as the things in your attic.] Clean out the attic and your Mac will run more smoothly.

    Apple Unibody 13.3" MacBook Pro (Mid-2010): 4GB vs. 8GB DDR3 1066MHz Memory (RAM).

         Memory (RAM): 4.00GB DDR3 1066MHz (2 x 2.00GB)
Hard Drive: 320GB 5400RPM (Apple Stock HD)

Operating System: Mac OS X Lion (10.7.1)
    2. My concerns/questions
For quite some time now, I've been planning to upgrade the memory (RAM) of my MacBook Pro from 4.00GB (Apple Stock) to 8.00GB. In terms of "FASTER BOOT TIMES, IMPROVED RESPONSIVENESS (OPENING and CLOSING PROGRAMS, FILES & ETC.), SMOOTHER GRAPHICS, ABILITY TO OPEN MORE PROGRAMS SIMULTANEOUSLY AND OVERALL IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORMANCE", does it really make a BIG difference?
If ever I am going to pursue this upgrade, should I let Apple do the upgrade or buy the parts and do it myself?
If I am going to buy the parts and install it myself, what brand do you recommend? Crucial, Kingston, OWC & etc.?
Why does Apple charge so much for memory (RAM) upgrades? Is the memory module they are using any special compared to the ones we can find in Amazon (Crucial, Kingston, OWC & etc.)?
Thanks for helping me out with my concerns.

I recommend OWC RAM because it's reasonably priced and OWC's support is great if you ever need it. I recommend installing the RAM yourself because it's dead simple. There is no good reason for anyone ever to pay Apple's prices for RAM.
I don't think you will see faster boot times with more RAM, but that shouldn't be a concern, because there's seldom any need to shut down or restart a MBP. Just put it to sleep when you aren't using it, unless you won't use it again for more than two or three days. Opening and closing programs won't benefit significantly from more RAM either, but when running multiple large programs at once, you will see a significant improvement in their performance. It's well worth the small investment ($65) to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB.

  • Macbook 7.1 (mid-2010) RAM and hdd upgrade questions!

    Hello!
In a bit of impulsiveness, I have just acquired a Apple laptop: a lightly used Macbook 7.1 (released mid-2010 and discontinued, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo). This is my first Apple computer!
I want to upgrade just a wee bit to squeeze a bit more performance out of what is currently probably a mid to low end laptop. Two questions:
    1) I know this Macbook takes 1066 MHz DDR memory. But I have two 2 GB sticks of 1333 MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SODIMM. Can I put those in? Or do I have to get 1066 sticks?
    2) I'd like to put a 7200 rpm hdd in it. Will there be any potential issues with heat? (I'm assuming a 7200rpm drive generates more heat than a 5400rpm drive.)
    Thanks!!!!

Faster RAM will have a great chance to lead to problems. If it works it will not be noticeably faster; The bus speed is still 1066. Ram being cheap I would either put in more ram and not faster ram, buy from high reputation suppliers like Crucial, OWC.
The 7200 will not lead to problems, be sure that it is compatible, the fastest way to replace if you are using (snow) leopard OS: make a clone of the existing drive to the new one, boot from it when still outside, to test;  replace the internal disk with the new one, et voila...

  • Single 8gb module supported? (Mid 2010 Core i5 15" MBP 6,2)

I have a mid-2010 15 inch MBP which can support a maximum of 8GB ram.
This is traditionally 2x4gb, and the economics of 2x4gb vs 1x8gb make more sense. The Apple docs _do_ say that the sizes supported are 2gb and 4gb.
The problem is that it turns out that I have a bad memory slot - I get "bad ram" beeps if I use the "inner" slot. Right now I'm limited to 4gb just because of this.
I'm wondering if the memory manager will support a single 8GB module in the remaining "working" slot.
These new 8gb modules have become available for the new 2011 MBPs, which would solve my problem if they worked.
Has anyone tried this out, or have any reasons to support my €100 experiment to see if it'll work?
    Thanks

Have an answer to my own question. In essence, no, this doesn't work.
Tried an 8GB module rated for the newer macbooks. The mac starts and runs up to a point. Then there's a freeze.

  • Memory Upgrade on Macbook 13" Mid 2010

    Hi,
Reviewed the forums regarding upgrading from 4GB to 8GB on a Macbook 13" (mid-2010). It appears many have had success with QWC.  I just wanted to run this by folks to get any feedback.
I was at BestBuy this evening and picked up some PNY memory (2 x 4GB). The Bestbuy clerk is also an Apple user.  Yet, the Apple guy at BestBuy, with the black shirt on, said "only about 70% of the time does the PNY memory work).
What I thought interesting is the PNY is for 1066 MHz @ DDR3.  When I run my Serial # on the Apple check site, it says my Macbook is 1066 MHz, yet, when I click on the Apple icon, strike About this Mac, the memory is 4 GB 1067 MHz.  Any idea why the descrepency from the serial # site of 1066 MHz and my Macbook telling me 1067 MHz.  Is this why the PNY won't work (which it didn't)?
    Thanks,

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 667mhz not 675mhz or 800mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed.
This is from one review of PNY RAM:
"These modules are actually 800Mhz. PNY no longer makes or sells 667Mhz modules. Not all computers that require 667Mhz are compatible with 2 800Mhz modules. They refuse to down clock properly. This is especially true with a number of Core 2 Duo MacBooks. Spoke to PNY support, they flat out told me that yes, they sell 800Mhz modules in 667Mhz packaging. If you RMA a module that is 667Mhz (or supposed to be 667Mhz) they will replace it with an 800Mhz module as they no longer have any 667Mhz SODIMMs, not even for RMA replacement!"

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris
