Memory/space-hogging apps on iPhone 4

After my most recent sync/backup, I noticed that my iPhone is down to .33 GB of free space. This is quite surprising, as just a few days ago I had a full 3 GB free. A quick peek at the "Capacity" graph showed that my apps are taking up 9.7 GB of space, so the culprit must be in there. Is there any way to determine how much system resources an individual app is using? Clearly I need to empty out some trash, but I don't know where to start.

Seriously, I have over 200 apps on my phone, and I can count the number of them that allow control over cache options on the fingers of one hand. But prompted by your pertinent suggestion, I cleared the caches on every app I've used in the last few days (the Capacity only spiked in the last couple days). Result: almost no change, a difference of about 200MB.
Unless someone else has another idea, looks like I'm going to have to start deleting apps one at a time, starting with the most recently installed, to see what has a serious effect. I hope one of you very, very smart people has a simpler option.... anyway, thanks again.

Well, the app programmer does not consider the saved data "unnecessary" - it's there to perform some function of the app. The Google app, for example, saves your searches so it doesn't have to use data every time.
However, in the Google App itself tap the Settings icon, Privacy, Browsing. You can enable or disable "on-device history" and also clear the on-device history. That's what I meant when I said that some apps have settings to manage their cache.

How much memory/space are Mac Apps Taking?

I know this is probably a very simple question for you experts but as a newbie, I dont know how to figure it out. Im trying to find out how much hard drive space (and maybe memory?) the apps I have downloaded from the Mac App Store are taking up? Where would I find this? Ive looked in the Finder but couldnt find what I was looking for? Does the Activity Moniitor or something else break it down to just the Mac Apps?
Also do you know if Time Machine saves your organizational Launchpad Folders when you back up your machine? Just was curious if you had to switch macs or something, if the folders would all come back up or if its best to keep a list of what apps you have in what folders.
I also was wondering if anyone else has had a problem of your Launchpad Folders and individual apps within folders getting out of order when you have to restart your system. Since I dont yet have an iphone and apps were new to me, I got a little crazy in downloading a bunch of free apps and games (many of which I think Im going to start deleting because I dont really use them)...but Ive organized them in all in alphabetical order - Ive got folders in Alphabetical Order as well as the apps within folders in alphabetical order. Its strange becuase whenever my system gets restarted, several of the folders and apps get mixed up. Ive been working with Apple techs on this for weeks but just curious if anyone else has had a similar problem. The tech told me most people dont keep it as well organized as I do.

To find out how much hard drive space (or how large the App is), Right-Click on the App in your Applications folder and choose Get Info. This will show you xx MBs on Disk (hard drive). To see how much memory the App is using, check Activity Monitor while the App is running. It will be on the list of all processes running.
But you can also click the  (apple) in the upper left hand corner of the screen and select about this mac>more infor>storage

An iPhone is just like any computer when the operating system detects that storage is low it prevents any further updating to avoid compromising the installation
You have too much on too smaller iPhone something will have to be deleted to proceed

iTunes stores your iPhone backups in the Library folder in your Home folder.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes

Update using iTunes on your computer. The space requirement does not apply because of how the process works via iTunes as opposed to over the air.

"Other" includes data such as contact information and photos assigned to contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cookies/history, notes created with the Notes application, SMS messages, email stored locally or cached, and 3rd party application data created and stored by the application.
If "other" is more than say .75GB at the most, you had a corrupt sync. Try syncing again and if the problem persists, the recognized fix for this is to restore your iPad.

Other is usually around 1 GB...
A ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup... But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup... Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on the router
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Do you have any still images in your sequence? Make sure thay are in RGB color mode, not CMYK and that the bit depth for the images is 8 bits/channel.

It sounds like you would like to free up disk space on your computer by listening to your purchases directly from the Cloud, rather than storing them on your computer. First check the preferences setting to Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases in your iTunes preferences:
Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases
Display items purchased from the iTunes Store that haven’t been downloaded to your computer. These items have a Download button next to them.

Then you can delete all the songs in your library, and empty your trash to free up the disk space.

If you have music in your library that was NOT purchased from iTunes, this will not work for them. In order to store those songs in the Cloud and listen to them via streaming as outlined above, you would need the iTunes Match service.

As far as your iOS devices, simply sign into your accout in Settings > iTunes and App Stores and that will sync your devices to your iTunes account.

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
