Memory upgrade - computer won't come on

Hi all,
Last week I put a new battery in my MacBook and noticed that one of those three screws by the memory slots was loose. I tried to tighten it but it (or perhaps the hole) was apparently stripped as it did not work. I was able to get the battery in by holding it down and the computer worked fine. Then my memory upgrade arrived and after getting the right screwdriver I was able to unscrew everything, put the new memory in, and put that plate back on. . . except that one screw would not go back in. I was again able to get the battery in by holding that plate down, but the computer would not turn on. The power light just kept blinking, even when I used the power cord. Not knowing if my computer failed to recognize the new memory, I put the old memory back in, but the computer is dead. It seems to power on but the screen is dark. I am using my husband's old computer.
Do you think it's an issue with the memory? I'm fairly sure I put it in correctly, and didn't think that would affect whether or not the machine even came on. My own thought is that without that stupid screw down tight something is not connecting anymore, and that I will have to take it to the Apple Store to get it fixed. Does that sound right and if so - any idea what it will cost? Should I just get a new computer?? I attempted to do my own upgrade to save money (Apple Store told me $180 to install 2MB!!) but it's looking like that has backfired.
Thanks so much!

Thanks for your help. Yes, it is a Core Duo MB. It is dead once again so I'm afraid I can't tell you anything besides the fact that I purchased it in June, 2006 so I think it is a first generation machine.
Like I said previously, I did get it to boot but it only recognized one of my old 256MB cards, and I don't know which slot. I tried reseating and switching them and pushing them in as much as I could but it's totally not coming on now. This is the product I purchased:
http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partsinfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack= http://www.kingston.com&ktcpartno=KTA-MB667K2/2G
I suspect, though, that something else is going on since the old cards don't seem to work anymore. Is it the l-bracket not screwing in all the way? Could a ribbon cable be loose (I saw this on the Kingston FAQ) Does an entire slot need to be repaired? Should I even bother calling Kingston Tech Support? Is there anything else I can do before taking it to the Apple Store?
Thanks again!

Memory upgrade | PC won't boot

    Hi,
Most DDR400 works at 2.7V some can even go higher. So adjusting the voltage to 2.6 and then 2.7.
Yes, DDR400 will work with P4 and Celeron 400FSB.  Have a 2.6 Celeron 400FSB  in 848P Neo S mainboard and is running fine. (Also tested in 865 Platinum mainboard (dual channe)l and 845GE max mainboard.)
The only other suggestion is you ask a friend to MEMTEST for you.
Where did you download bios from? As the MSI bios download for "link"mainboard is only 2.1........

  • Monitor/Computer won't come on?

I have an iMac (self contained) computer. Yesterday I moved the iMac to another room, the computer worked fien, but I decided to move it back to its original location. I didn't plug it back in last night ... I waited until this morning to plug it in and turn it on. But when I did, the monitor wouldn't come on. The little pulsing white light (i.e. the heartbeat) in the bottom right corner pulses, but the monitor itself won't come on. It doesn't do anything ... it just stays black. It there something I can do?
    Help! Thanks!

I connect my charger to computer light green then immediately turns to red and computer tries to come up but cuts off.  What could be the problem?
    Do I need another charger?

Option click the battery icon in the menu bar to check the condition of the battery.
If it says "Normal", try to reset SMC.

    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you may have to take the MBP and the charger to the Apple store to have it checked out.

  • Memory upgrade - now won't boot or wake when peripherals attached

I just bought 2x1GB PC2700 333Mhz 200 Pin DDR SODIMM and now if I have my external monitor attached or anything USB attached (even just a mouse) it will not power up. When I unplug the monitor and/or USB it powers up fine.
I've already had the memory exchanged as the original upgrade memory was incompatible (had the same incompatibility problem when I replaced one of the 256's for a 512 at time of purchase).
Anyone else have this or know the fix?
It's not deadly, just annoying to not be able to put it to sleep after 4 years of using it without any problems.
    Appreciate any help.

I have the same problem. This just happened a couple weeks ago. I purchased a discounted version of 10.4 online, and installed it. That's when everything started acting odd. I have 1.25 gig of RAM. One day the computer locked up, rebooted and clicked on about this mac and it said that only 256 of RAM was installed. I turned the computer off, opened the RAM slot, removed the memory and re-installed. All was well. A couple hours later, the same thing happened again. I thought it was the RAM going bad, so I swapped the location of the RAM, put the 256 in the lower and the 1gig in the upper. Restarted and waited. A couple hours go by until it locks up, then Re-boot. This time it says I only have 1 gig of RAM. Definitely the lower slot going bad on the logic board. ifixit.com has the board for $450, but out of stock. Funny how Apple's recall is only for the 1.5~1.6 machines...

  • Memory upgrade | PC won't boot

Hi everyone. I've just upgraded my memory from 256MB to 1GB, I took out the 256 one and only inserted 1GB one so that they don't clash as they are of different makes. Now when I start up my PC, my monitor says 'Monitor is working, check you PC or cable' and nothing boots up, not even that screen where I can get into system setup/bios etc. So from there I have to turn it off by pressing the start CPU button for 5 or so seconds.
I can run memtest only after booting up when it goes to that stage where floppy or cd drive is checked, but it doesn't. CPU does start but nothing comes on the screen, instead the monitor says 'Monitor is working, check your pc or cable'. when I put my old ram in, it runs the memtest, no problems.
Help would be loved here, my £40 are at stake, please. :(

  • Photoshop CS2 upgrade -- computer won't recognize the CD

I'm trying to upgrade my Photoshop7 to CS2. When I insert the CD, nothing happens. I went through Toast and Disk Utility and they both insist there is no CD inserted. The same happens with the training CD that came with the upgrade. Also the same with my old Photoshop 7 CD and a Corel Painter CD. However, any Apple CDs are read fine as are my own data CDs and also audio CDs. I tried a permissions repair. I've tried reinstalling Toast. I ran Drive 10. Please, any other suggestions for my Panther 10.3.9 G4?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

A co-worker of mine has had a similar problem. What she did was run Norton Disk Doctor and apparently the problem was fixed. However, after talking to her, she's no certain if Norton fixed the problem or if just shutting down the computer for the night fixed it.
I suggest trying either. Also check to see if the upgrade is for PC or Mac as Adobe's software isn't able to be read by both anymore because of the differences between OS X (10.3.X) and Windows XP. While some may still work I was advised to use the CD's designed for the specific operating system.
    Hope this helps.

  • Memory access door won't come off!

I just got a lovely 4GB SDRAM combo and was raring to get it into my iMac when, d'oh, the access door won't unscrew! The screw turns, but hit a kink then keeps on turning without coming out.
Has anyone else had this problem? And hopefully had it resolved.

    Agreed.
When I changed my memory I was a bit worried when the door did not just pop off after unscrewing. But all was well, i just need to get a thin blade screw driver (or knife) in the seam to pry off the panel. You should be able to do that with no problems.

  • Computer won't come out of Sleep mode

I just bought my first apple computer.  It worked great for 2 days.  Now it goes into a sleep mode and I can't wake it up.

  • Dropped CPU...now computer won't come on.

I had a problem with the laptop with the power connector. After leaving a message on the message board and getting the answer I needed. I replaced the power jack to a updated one. While cleaning the CPU I dropped it on the floor. I picked it up and didn't notice anything wrong. No pins were bent or anything. I proceded to put it all back together being careful not to harm anything else. I put it back in the same direction as it was. All ribbions and plugs are ok. When I plugged it up I was so happy to see all lights come on. The power button, the three lights in the front and the fans all come on, then the fans go off as they always do but nothing else. The screen is blank and the computer wont start. I took everything back apart and all looks good but still no computer. Please help!!
    Kudos! Thanks!

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller? That is a good first step for power related issues such as this.
You may want to consider getting a new battery as well. Apple sells them on the store for about $129, and other users have reported being able to purchase 3rd party batteries for $20-30 on eBay.
    Best of luck.

  • Added new memory, now computer won't boot at all

    Hello
I added a new pair of 2*8GB Coursair memory along with my old memory which was 2*2GB, for a total of 20GB Ram. It was working fine for a day (except one random restart), but got steadily worse. Yesterday iMac was shutting and restarting more frequently. I decided to remove the old pair thinking the   different brands may be causing a disturbance. I did, but the restarting didn't stop. I removed them again to try put it back more firmly or something, that was the last time my iMac booted. It will show the apple logo, then some short loading bar will come up, then it would promprtly shut down.
I tried putting back my original RAM and it still wouldn't boot. Tried them individually, new old, different slots, nothing worked.
So I guess I damaged my memory slots or all my RAM modules stopped working. Any ideas what to do next? I've already requested a replacement for the new RAM.
    Some extra info:
-Old ram was running at 1333Hz and new one was 1666Hz, I tried them together .
-First time I tried to remove RAM, I tried to pluck them out with my hands by leveraging the sides with a small screw driver. Realised I had to pull the black thing later on. Don't think I applied too much force though.

Well, you should not mix different specs RAM. And, it's best to purchase RAM for the very finicky Macs from either OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial which guarantee the RAM to be Mac compatible and offer a lifetime warranty.
I would guess that the new incorrect spec RAM is the problem. Additionally, you might have damaged the slots inadvertantly.
You might need to take it to your nearest Genius Bar for a free evaluation. Additionally, I would return the RAM as not being compatible.

  • Battery gets low, computer won't come back out of sleep for 5 min.

    Here's my problem:
I'm using my computer without it plugged in and I get the usual warning about reserve battery, and then about 10 or 15 min later, the battery gets so low that it puts the computer into sleep mode. All of this is normal. My problem is that upon connecting the power adaptor, my computer does not start right back up.
On average my computer has to be connected to the adaptor for about 5 min before it will even start back up.
I'm going to have a talk with Apple about this, and see if I can get my battery replaced. I've posted this problem in the forums before, and yes I've tried permission repairs, volume repairs, battery calibration... the works. So if anyone here has any other ideas before I take my computer in, I'd love to hear them.
    Thanks,
    -David Crow

    Hey David,
Well I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. My computer would go into sleep mode, so I would plug it in to my adapter, and it would remain sleeping. Although, you say about 5 minutes yours comes back one? Well I could never get mine to wake up from sleeping, I would have to restart it. The thing being that it wouldn't even let me restart it for awhile. I took it into the Apple Genuis Bar and they reset my power management, which isn't hard, and ran some diagnostic test. They didn't find anything wrong. You can call Apple and have them walk you through resetting your management, because I don't remember exactly. I know I probably didn't help much, but I just wanted to let you know, your not alone!

  • My HP Pavilion dv2500 series computer (dv2845se). Computer won't come on -Case Manager contact me

I have a HP Pavilion dv2500 series laptop (dv2845se). Pushed power button to use and computer would not turn on at all under battery or ac power. I would like to speak to a case manager about this.

You cannot get to a Case Manager through this Forum. We are peer users (consumers) like you. That model series has known defects in the motherboard. Of course, it is now at least 4 years old and long out of warranty. HP will fix it for you but it will cost $300-400. There are many services on the internet and ebay that will do a good job repairing the faulty chip on the motherboard for around $100 or less. Personally, if it is possible financially I would get another laptop if I were you. Even with a repair the unit is inherently unreliable. You are lucky to have gotten as long a life out of it as you have.
