Memory upgrade for Satellite L30-134

I have a Satellite L30-134 which appears to be running quite slowly - I think due to large amount of photos and itunes music.
I am wondering which is the easiest way to resolve - buy a memory upgrade (no idea how to change the memory though) or get an external hard drive?
And if I change the memory will I lose what is already saved on the laptop?

I agree with Ganz the bigger HDD will not improve the performance but only increase the available HDD space it would helps you to store more music and pic files on the HDD ;)
The memory upgrade would also not bring an performance boost of course the performance would be a little bit better because the most stuff would be handled directly in the memory and not temporally on the HDD but generally its not really noticeable.

For the archive: Upgrading the Satellite L30-134

I got one of these old laptops off a mate who'd discarded it as obsolete.
However with just a little time and money it is possible to upgrade it to a very usable machine.
Not a powerhouse by any stretch but perfectly adequate for browsing the internet and watching standard definition video (just about watchable 720p) etc.
Whilst searching these forums for information for this project I found a lot of conflicting advice and some of my questions were not answered at all. I hope by documenting my experiences here I can help someone in the same position in the future.
*Model*
This machine is the Toshiba Satelite L30-134, Part Number: PSL33E-00E013G3. It is probably very similar but not necessarily the same as the other L30 models. Do not mix them up.
*Original configuration*
Processor- Intel Celeron m 410 (1M Cache, 1.46 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, Socket M). It is a single core version of the (Yonah core) Core Duo processor. It shares nothing in common, and is not swapable with the previous generation Pentium M or Celeron M processors. It is also incompatible with the next generation Core 2 Duo/Solo and the Pentiums and Celerons derived from them.
Memory- A single 512MB SODIMM of PC2-4200 (DDR2 533MHz). This is different to the previous generation DDR and the next generation DDR3. The memory controller only supports single channel mode. This is no loss as the FSB of the processor is not fast enough to take advantage of dual channel anyway.
*BIOS*
My laptop came with the very old version 1.3. Toshiba only provide the latest version (3.10) for download. This is reported to be buggy and messes with the fan profiles so I decided to leave it alone. I can confirm that my upgrades work without updating the BIOS.
*Upgrades*
Processor- I swapped the Celeron for a Core Duo T2350 (1.87 GHz). From all I have read it appears that all Yonah core Core Duo/Solos, Pentiums and Celerons with an FSB of 533 are compatible. The 667 FSB models are not.
The Core Duo T2450 at 2GHz is the highest performing compatible processor but is double the price on eBay. I only paid 12 (used) for the T2350 so there is really no reason to go any lower now all these parts are obsolete.
RAM- There are 2 slots on this machine. Toshiba state a 2GB maximum, 1GB in each slot. Unfortunately the memory controller is very picky and throws up weird errors unless you get just the right ones.
There's not enough information available to figure this one out so for me it was a process of trial and error. Thankfully I found an online retailer that guaranteed 100% compatibility and did returns by free post.
The second pair of sticks worked fine.

*Working on the machine*
Swapping the RAM is as easy as usual. Unscrew the flap on the bottom of the machine to get to them. Getting to the processor on the other hand is a complete nightmare. You probably need to have experience taking laptops apart. And I do mean apart- the motherboard has to come out so EVERYTHING that can be unscrewed and unplugged needs to be. If I hadn't had discovered these amazing instructions I might not have attempted it:

I've no idea who runs this website but it doesn't appear to be commercial. It must have taken them an age to do so click on the 'donate' button if you want to say thanks. If you click on the photos they enlarge and show exactly where the screws are. Brilliant site.
Don't forget to clean the heatsink and fan whilst you've got it all apart. I promise you'll never want to do this again. I forgot to plug the cpu fan back in the first time so I did...
*Other stuff*
As you'll know the BIOS utility is useless, there is very little you can change. There is one trick I found though. Usually I can't get it to boot from usb- there's no option available. However when you take the hard drive out (with an empty optical drive) it will!
The wifi is a Mini PCI card accessable from the second flap on the bottom of the machine. The pigtails (ariels) run into the lid. This is not the same as the modern PCIe (PCI Express) and is incompatible. The fastest version of wifi it supports is 'G' which is old and slow. When connected to a modern router this can slow all of your wireless devices down to this connection speed. The easy fix is to use a usb wifi dongle that supports 'N' speed (or if you're really fly, 'AC'). If you'd like to keep the convenience of an internal device I've only found one Mini PCI card that supports 'N' speeds. TP-Link TL-WN861N. Thankfully it's supposed to be quite good. I used usb since I already had one.
The hard drive conects via SATA. Someone on these forums tried and failed to replace this with an SSD. I don't know why it didn't work. Not worth the money in my opinion.
Whilst you're doing all of this format the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP. Never Vista. Then dual boot it with Linux Mint and only use XP when you absolutely have to. There are no more security updates coming for XP and Mint is better.

The T2350 benchmarks somewhere around the fastest netbook/htpc processors (AMD E series, Intel Atom D series), Early ultra mobile (U series) Core 2 Duos and the first generation of dual core desktop chips (Pentium D, Athlon x2)

Memory upgrade on Satellite L30

I have a Satellite L30-11D and I am wanting to upgrade the memory modules in it, I have found this;
Part Number: PA3411S-2M1G
1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2-4300 DDR2 (533MHz)
and it will work but im unsure on this - can you have more than one plugged into my laptop?
Please help!!!

Of course you can do more then one memory module. On your Satellite notebook there are two slots available and you can put two memory modules. Your notebook can handle with max 2 GB of RAM.
According the notebook specification you should have now 512 MB of RAM. New 1GB module put in place where is now placed 512 MB module and old one put into empty slot.

Your L10 has two memory slots available and will support a maximum of 2Gb RAM (2 X 1Gb modules).

Memory upgrade for Satellite A10-S811 PSA10E

I want to upgrade the memory on my old laptop i've found the manual and read a bit in it.
Apparently it uses PC2100 DDR (266 Mhz) has two memory slots and only allows up to 512 mb modules.
Is it at all possible to use larger and/or faster modules.
I'm hoping the low speed and size has something to do with the time it was produced before larger modules were as common as they are today.
Also how many pins are there on modules, i guess DDR modules for laptops are different from those for desktop computers.

Yes, maybe Intel said that the chip set supports 2GB but its only known to me that the Satellite supports 1GB max.
You can try it with 2GB but I think it will not work. The BIOS and other factors must support more RAM.
As far as I know you buy double sided RAM because the notebook has only two slots. This fact is only interesting with more than two slots.

Memory upgrade for Satellite P15: How to install it?

Hello everyone, first time poster needing some help please....
My Satellite P15 has 512mb (2x256bm) ram installed and I'm looking to put 1gb ram into each of the two slots to bring it up to the maximum supported 2gb. At first I wasn't sure which sort of memory but I ran a search on crucial.com's system scanner and discovered I need DDR PC2700 SODIMM modules of the 200 pin variety I believe. I opened up the flap next to the heat sink / fan and found the existing memory sticks but i'm amazed how difficult they are to get out. I can't seem to get them to budge and obviously I'm wary of applying to much force - does anyone know of an easy way to remove the memory sticks via the bottom of the laptop or will I have to go through the whole taking apart the keyboard etc which there are no guides on the net that i can find?
Also, as 2 x 1gb sticks is quite an expense I want to make sure I get it right. I was looking at this item on ebay:

I think the memory from ebay will work in your machine.
Removing the memory module normally is very easy.
After removing the plate on the bottom you just have to push apart the brackets, which hold the module at its side. Then the memory will jump up and you can pull it out.

CPU Upgrade on Satellite L30-134

Has anyone managed to upgrade the CPU on one of these yet??? Ive already maxed out the memory, but its still a bit slow if you know what I mean...:P
Ive been looking at the Core2 SLV3W 2x1.33Ghz, same operating temperature and FSB, both socket 478/9 but not sure if the BIOS is going to chuck a teddy, the Pentium mobiles look a little to hot to run on this board, although its amazing what you can do with a dremel tool and a bit of copper tubing, if needs be I will doctor the existing cooling....
Any feedback or suggestions greatfully recieved.

unfortunately no one here would be able to give you really good information which could be useful for you. Since youre a Pro you should check e.g. this site: http://www.irisvista.com/tech/
The BIOS cannot be modified but if the chipset is able you can try it. The socket is always the same so the package should fit in the hole ;)
But I recommend you NOT to modify the cooling system because its aligned to work with the whole system together. The system would perhaps run a little bit "non-cooler" and wouldnt be quiet as before but it should work.
So, how you see on your own. I am with you but I cannot give you proper information since I am just modding desktops (and already upgraded a notebook with some new CPU so I know something about it and I can just tell you: Dont ask here. Just read the topics and you will see why :) )

I would like to put in a 1gb memory chip in my current A60 as it only has 256mb built in.
When viewing the parts on the Toshiba site, it is not showing the part available. Are these no longer available?

Memory upgrade problems on Satellite L30-134

I have just bought 2 x 1GB memory PC4200 for my L30-134 and installed them they work fine in BIOS, show up and read as they should do, but when windows is booting up it will crash with both modules installed, only ever gets to the screen with the loading bar going across and then I get blue screen.
Forgot to make a note of the error code I am afraid... (Fool I know). If I remove one of the modules and install the original 512 module with just 1 of the 1GB ones it will work fine. BIOS has been updated to the latest 3.10 version and still I get the same problem...
because all seems fine from within BIOS I am thinking that its more likely to be a software (windows) problem of some kind maybe some corrupt data in the registry or a virus maybe... has anybody any ideas?
Also, the laptop is actually my step sons and he really wants to have the CPU upgraded from the Celeron 410 to one that's a little faster. When first looking into this we was told that several CPUs were compatible (although not really worth the hassle of installing) they were cel m 450 2 GHz, pent dual core t2060 and t2080, and also the core duo t2250,so he bought the t2250,and no surprises it wouldn't work, or should I say it powered up with no display and the shut off and just epeated the cycle. So did not take a genius to work out it wasn't compat...
I know the t2080 are used in the L30's and are 1.73 533 FSB with 1MB L2 cache- 65nm and do stepping. The t2250 is identical apart from the L2 cache is 2MB and the stepping varies from do to mo depends when u bought it... seeing as ow he already has the CPU he's gonna sell it on and use the cash to buy the one that will work. If anybody has any info that could help make sure that he does not end up going round in circles I would really appreciate it...
Oh and just to make you all laugh it was Toshiba tech line staff member that told him that the CPU would work and that the L30 was able to take 2 x 1GB memory and never once mentioned that there may be issues with both upgrades...

The specs. you posted are correct. Xpress 200 could support dual channel: "Variants available with single or dual channel system memory support ". But there is nothing about dual channel mode in Xpress 200M specs. I have identical modules, but EVEREST doesn't say the modules are running in dual channel mode. So I think the info you found on the website gives the answer, but here are some explanation from Wikipedia to clarify the definitions:
*Dual-channel:*
"Dual-channel-enabled memory controllers utilize two 64-bit data channels, resulting in a total bandwidth of 128-bits, to move data from RAM to the CPU. In order to achieve this, two or more DDR/DDR2 SDRAM memory modules must be installed into matching banks, which are usually color coded on the motherboard. These separate channels allow each memory module access to the memory controller, increasing throughput bandwidth."
*DDR:*
"DDR SDRAM or double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory is a class of memory integrated circuit used in computers. It achieves greater bandwidth than the preceding single data rate SDRAM by transferring data on the rising and falling edges of the clock signal (double pumped). It currently has a Nanya 256MB SDR-133 Mhz-CL3 & I undestand it can be upgraded with an additional 256Mb card.

You have several ways to find out what memory module is compatible and supported.
You can use a diagnostic too like Everest, you will check the user manual or the Toshiba website for details or you will contact the service in your country for supported modules.
I will try to answer the question: The Satellite A50 should support PC2700 DDR-RAM like these parts:

On the Satellite Pro A40 you will find 2 memory slots and you can upgrade the memory to max 2GB (2x1024MB)
It should be possible to use these modules:
PC2100 512MB (PA3164U-1M51)
PC2100 1GB (PA3278U-1M1G)
And
PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-1M51)
PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-1M1G
I purchase the compatible parts and devices always form the Toshiba service partner in my country because so I'm 100% sure that this parts are compatible.
So I would recommend you also to buy the modules form the ASP in your country.

Memory upgrade on Satellite Pro L40-15d

I have Satellite Pro L40-15d with 512 memory (Samsung) but I wont upgrade to 1GB. I have Kingston ktt667d2/1g I have tray to put in to both slots but nothing work I cant switch on computer.
But when I change for old one laptop is ok. What can I do? Install special program or update BIOS or maybe the memory stick is broken.

The notebook doesnt boot after the memory upgrade due to these different issues;
- memory modules are not compatible together
- memory modules are not compatible with the notebook
- memory modules are faulty
- one of memory slots is faulty
In most case the memory module replacement helps.
One hint; did you try to switch the memory modules in the slots? Sometimes this helps.
Several weeks ago I have updated my memory and the notebook didnt boot.
I thought its a memory malfunction but after module switching the notebook booted correctly.
