Memory Upgrade in 2009 Mac Mini?

Hi,
I want to upgrade my Mac Mini to 4 GB of ram, it's the core 2 duo 2009 model.
I don't want to pay silly amounts for Mac own memory, has anyone ever used Crucial Memory in a Mini Mac? if so how does it run?
The other option I guess is to look at Corsair! As i believe they make the memory for Apple anyway! anyone else upgraded themselves? how did it go?

I read a lot before I upgraded mine to 4 GB. The difficulty was overrated. It took me < 40 minutes from never opening a Mini to running it with 4gb all put back together. Don't be scared by others descriptions. But do be careful whenever you take apart any delicate electronics.
It was far easier than taking apart my Thinkpads. There are videos on-line showing the whole process. Much better than still pictures.

If you go to the Apple store, select either model, and learn more under memory, it says " To maximize memory performance, it is recommended that memory SO-DIMMs be installed in pairs".
In an Apple note on memory it says "For optimum performance, it is recommended to use two SO-DIMMs (one in each slot) of the same DIMM size (e.g. two 512 MB SO-DIMMs)." The note is at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303378

Late 2009 Mac Mini EFI 2.1 Firmware update not needed/already factory installed?

Here has been my issue of trying to figure out if Mac Mini can handle (and fully use) 8GB of RAM with my current EFI version.
I want to upgrade to 8GB on a LATE 2009 Mac Mini that currently has Boot ROM MM31.00AD.B00 and was told to update with EFI Firmware update 2.1 but it does not install saying "This update is not needed on this machine".
I found various contradicting posts saying that I need my Boot ROM to be MM31.0081.B06 or my machine won't utilize the 8GB fully
and will slow down in performance and/or crash after the Apple recommended 4GB.
But here's what I found interesting. Some users have mentioned that the Late 2009 Mac Mini's shipped with updated firmware and don't need this update but could not find a concrete answer as to yes it did ship with it or not.
Apple doesn't even list a Late 2009 Mac Mini as needing a Firmware update in this list of Firmware updates: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 . Should I just assume that my machine shipped with said update and is capeable of the 8GB? I use this for Logic Pro 9 as a somewhat portable workstation that I can take with me so maxing out the RAM would be ideal for me.
Any help or clarification would be greatly apprishiated,

Actually a Late 2009 can take 8GB of RAM and only the Early 2009 needs the EFI update.

Upgrading ram on Mac mini server - different?

I plan to buy a mini server 2011 and upgrade it myself to 8GB.
Is there any reason why some sellers on eBay sates DDR3 specs for a mac mini 2011 specifically for a i5 or i7 ??.... Aren't the specs provided for ram upgrade for my base model the same for the mac server ? I'm asking since I want to order it even before I get the mini server...

More RAM or memory; difficulty to install on 2009 Mac Mini

I have a 2009 Mac Mini (Snow Leopard) with the following:

When I look at the Activity Monitory I see:
Free: 11.2 MB
Wire: 394.2 MB
Active: 415.1 MB
Inactive: 205.2 MB
Swap Used: 1.82 GB
The green "slice" is almost non-existent.
Do I need more RAM or memory and how easy/difficult is it to install either of these on my Mac Mini? Years ago I installed additional memory on my Dell desktop without any issues/problems.

According to MacTracker, the only difference between the two model numbers is MB463LL/A comes with a 120 GB hard drive & MB464LL/A comes with a 320 GB hard drive. Because of this (& because more memory is better, all other things being equal), I suggest you buy at least a pair of 2 GB modules (for 4 GB total).

I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.
I'm not interested in buying a laptop. My mini works great so why waste $1,000 or more when I can buy a 1 to 3 TB hdd for under $300 and have exactly what I want. My late 2009 Mac Mini with a large hdd.
I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.

Trouble with Lion upgrade: 2009 Mac Mini not rebooting.

Hi folks,
I'm having trouble with the Lion upgrade. My 2009 Mac Mini (running Snow Leopard) won't reboot. Everything looked fine, but it just went black after the gray and white Apple symbol screen on the restart and I can't get it to get past this. I should mention I'm using wireless keyboard and trackpad (both Apple) and a Philips HDTV via HDMI cable as monitor. Any thought? Looking forward to using Lion.

Is anyone else having this problem (an infinite loop of "You need to restart your computer" messages)?
Any thoughts or suggestions? I don't know how I can fix the problem, since I can't properly boot into the OS. I tried holding down the shift button to boot into Safe mode, only to achieve the same results.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm really looking forward to using Lion.

Memory used in similar Mac mini

I am wondering what is true and what is not.
I had the local Apple Store upgrade my 2 X 2GB memory sticks that came with my 2012 Late Mac Mini to 16gigs. I was quoted a price that was fairly close to the non-Apple memory I had researched, plus I was told that there is a life guarantee on these non-Apple memory sticks. When I picked up the 2012 Mac Mini, I asked to have the 2 memory sticks that had been taken out. First I was told that they don't give back what they take out. When I pressed, I was asked what I would do with the memory sticks. I said, that my husband has a mid 2010 Mac Mini and if something were to happen to his memory sticks (mac mini was used when purchased) I could use the 2012 memory sticks in his 2010 mac mini. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that the memory from the 2012 late would not work in the 2010. When I pressed a little more, I was told that if they gave the two (2 GB) memory sticks back, I would have to pay $20.00 as the non-apple memory sticks they installed, had been discounted $20.00, This was the first I had heard about any discount.
Did I believe them, no. Will I go back and raise cane, no. Thus I looked up the two memory numbers and this is what I found.

If your wondering why I would not raise cane with the owner... It's because this would be the second time I was lied to, to my knowledge; I don't plan to set foot in the store every again.

Early 2009 Mac Mini slow with Mavericks

I bought an early 2009 Mac Mini, and it was really slow with Maverick 10.9.1 installed. I proceed to upgrade the ram to 8GB and replaced the Hard Drive with a WD 500GB Blue Drive. The system is still pegging the CPU to 98%. I am posting 2 EtreChecks.

I just had more ram installed in my 2009 mac mini and now there is no audio at all.

Hi all,
I have a late 2009 Mac Mini which I update to mavericks. This was not a great idea. The performance has been aweful since upgrading. I finally looked into adding RAM. I was told by the Genius at my local store to buy RAM on line and bring it back to the store for install. I had the Ram installed today and I am satisfied that things function much faster now.
The problem now is that the computer does not make any noise. I have speakers plugged into the headphone jack but no noise comes out. When the system boots up, there are no beeps or tones audible. The speakers were all working earlier today when I unplugged everything to take the mini to the store. I also plugged the speakers jack into my phone and they work. I was able to connect a bluetooth speaker and play music through it.
I have tried to reset the PRAM but I"m not sure if I was successful. The instructions I have read for PRAM reset say hold keys until second chime is heard. I heard no chimes at all.
I am a novice when it comes to computers but I am good at following detailed instructions.
Any help would be graetly appreciated!

Yes, this was an Apple retail location.
I made an appiontment thinking that they would sell and install the RAM. When I got there, the genius looked up the specs for my mini and said they did not sell what I needed. He explained that the mini was older and out-dated. He looked up the specs on what RAM i needed and suggested that I purchase it elsewhere and bring it back for them to install. He suggested that I purchase a new computer but I couldn't justify spending $600 or more. I am a very light user and would only be wasting money on a newer set up.
It was when I returned that I was informed (by a different tech) that Apple would not be responsible for any damage that might occur during the replacement.
I decided to proceed anyway thinking that an apple tech was less likely to do damage than I was.
After taking it in the back and swapping the chips, he brought it out, plugged it in and proceeded to open a bunch of Ram hogging apps, graphing software, and internet sites. I was happy to see that the performance was greatly improved and the spinning ball was not dominating the system.
After I hooked it back up at home and tried to play some music, I realized that there was no sound.

Mountain Lion not installing on 2009 Mac Mini

I have tried a few times to install the new Mountain Lion OS X onto my 2009 Mac Mini. I have gone through the basic checklists of what to do prior to installing but the install keeps on getting stuck after the original download and restart.
Once downloaded and the install process has begun it restarts and then the OS X install screen apears and it shows how many minutes it will take to install.
It remains at 34 minutes, the second time I attempted an install I left the computer on overnight to make sure it wasn't installing very slowly, it was left on for over 12 hours but did not advance in the process.

I have viewed many other problem threads here based on installing Mountain Lion and the hard disk having problems. My computer will just not advance past the very beginning of the install and I am able to reboot the install disk and retry or just go back to OS X Lion so I can use the computer again.
Anyone have a tip or something I can look into to see what may be the problem??

Found this elsewhere after a couple weeks of searching, inserting an old install DVD worked;

Funnily enough I had the same problem yesterday.. tried 10 times but installer kept hanging at 34mins as well.. I noticed that while it was loading it was accessing the DVD drive.. with nothing in it then hanging.. I put in an installer disk for Snow Leopard, and the ML installer loaded and installed.. don't ask me why, no idea but give it a try..

Installation on 2009 Mac Mini

Does anyone know if the original 10.5.0 Instal CDs will install on the new Mac Mini hardware? I wanted to run as a server, and want to know if it can be done before I purchase the mini.

I wish you guys did what you are supposed to do before posting directions. I have been a member of this board for over 9 years a former official discussion helper and actively help apple with the progression of these boards. I dont say this to show off but to qualify my position on this.
What was always in the helper ethos was never to suggest anything you have not confirmed yourself or by another source that works, i.e a working procedure. Otherwise state I am not sure if this works i have not done it myself.

So unless you own a new 2009 mac mini you could not test it.
So whoever said check the other install folder is wrong.
The Apple Trainer who said navigate to the Installations folder and run MacOSXserverinstall.mpkg is wrong the installer says "You cannot install Mac OSX Server on this volume. You cannot upgrade this version of Mac OSX". This procedure did work for me in the past on earlier hardware.
The original retail copy of leopard server does not boot the new mac mini it goes into an infinite loop of boot crash, boot crash so on so on.
The only person who got it right is to install this on another mac bring that up date with software update then clone the drive onto the mini.

Will Mountain Lion Server be slower that Lion Server on my 2009 Mac Mini?

I have a 2009 Mac Mini running Lion Server. Specs are: 2.0 GHz 8 GB ram.
As always, I'm wanting to reap the benefits of the latest OS without upgrading my hardware. I know mirroring won't be supported, but who cares about that on a server.
Does anybody have Mountain Lion on a similar setup?

We've found Mountain Lion Server to run just as fast as Lion. MLS boots a bit slower on our Mac minis, but it's
neglegable.
Also have had trouble migrating from Lion and 10.6.8 server to Mountain Lion Server. Issues with Open Directory and Mail.
Hope Apple puts out a .1 release to address the issues soon.

Can a 2009 Mac Mini 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor accept Mavericks OS?

Considering buying a 2009 Mac Mini with a 2GHz Intel Core Duo processor. Before the drive was wiped to sell, it ran OS 10.9.2. Will that accept a new OS and an upgrade to Mavericks?

10.9.2 is Mavericks. 10.9.4 is also Mavericks.
