Memory Upgrade on Mid 2010 imac
Hi
I just want to expand my iMac's 4GB to 6GB, but simply just adding 2GB on a slot is said it won't support dual-channel, slows performance, so my idea is 2x1GB for the slots, but the Documentation said that the iMac will only support 2GB and 4GB. Mmm, still does 1x2GB still work? Anyone tried? Because I don't need 2x2 GB RAMs, ending up with 8GB- too much. 6GB will just fit.
Thanks

Just surf to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2010/DDR321.527 and make your decision.
Memory prices are stupidly low right now.

Memory upgrade on mid 2010 MacBook pro 13.3"
I decided it was time to upgrade the original 4GB memory in my mid 2010 2.4 ghz core 2 duo 13.3 inch MacBook pro and bought a 2X4GB pack from PNY. Unfortunately the memory is not reconized and my laptop doesn't start when using both 4 GB sticks. However when I use only either one of the new 4GB and one of the old 2GB sticks it does start up and reconizes 6 GB of memory. So both new sticks are reconized separately just not together. I tried reinstalling the two 4GB sticks together multiple times to ensure they were installed properly. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?
Thanks in advance. The problem is your memory. It's not the correct kind. You need to purchase another brand that is known to work in Macs, of which PNY is not. Dual ranked dual channel memory of good quality is what's suggested. Crucial or Corsair is your best bet. Cheap memory you find at retail stores won't work 100% of the time. Another user who bought cheap Kingston memory like you had exactly the same problem. Each module would work fine paird with an older one for max 6GB, but both new 4GB modules wouldn't work together.

I want to upgrade my mid 2010 17" i7 MacBook Pro from 4 to 8 meg. However, no memory is available. What should I do?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Mid 2010 MacBook Pro supports 8 GB of RAM. You can buy RAM at OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3
As your MacBook Pro has got two slots of memory, you will have to replace your actual memory and install two slots of 4 GB. Follow these steps > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link6 -
Pixelation after upgrade to Yosemite - mid 2010 iMac 27in
I have a mid-2010 iMac 27in with 16GB of RAM, 2.93GHz Intel Core i7, and an ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024MB display adapter. I also have a second display attached which is a 27in LED Cinema Display. I have never had a problem with either display with any of the previous versions of OS X. I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite over the weekend and now have random pixelation. Usually blotches of Magenta pixels, quite large in some cases. Sometimes the color varies and may be like a lime green. It doesn't show up on an open windows, just on the desktop background and it shows up on both screens, but not necessarily at the same time.
I have reset the PRAM and the SMC but problem persists. This sounds like a possible driver issue, but just guessing. Any thoughts?A client reported that this helped a lot:

I have a mid 2010 iMac with an upgraded i5 processor, however mirroring still doesn't work. What's the deal?
You did not look at Mountain Lion's Tech Spec's, click www.apple.com/osx and click the Tech Specs tab. That information has been posted for months.

I have windows 8.1 on DVD & on USB CF Reader/Card. I've followed the full steps in bootcamp, but when it restarts and its time to select the bootcamp partition to install windows (after alt rebooting to the efi startup) I get the "Windows can't be installed on this storage device. The chosen harddisk contains a MBR-partition-table. Windows can only be installed on GPT-harddisks on EFI-systems" error.
I've scoured the internet trying different solutions that seem to work for everyone else, but to no avail. I've reformatted from that screen, doesn't help. I've removed bootcamp partition and manually partitioned using disk util, leaving it empty once partition-wise, and filling it with a blank partition the second time. I've done a full back up and clean re-install of Yosemite, and nothing seems to be working.
Thats when I switched to DVD install, as I heard sometimes you can't install with a CF card. When I alt-boot, I can see EFI-windows and windows, but if I select EFI-windows, same problem as before, and if I select windows, I get the black screen of "no bootable device please insert boot disk and press any key."
I've been stuck w/o bootcamp for over 2 years now. Anyone, please help?
Mid 2010 iMac running 256gb SSD, Yosemite 10.10.1 trying to install windows 8.1I am having the same problem. Windows is trying to install. It identifies the various partitions but says that I cannot install Windows on the Boot Camp partition or any other. I select Drive options (advanced) and Format the Boot Camp drive, but it makes no difference.
This is the Windows error:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer BIOS menu.
I am not sure what Csound1 is suggesting with that post above. There are some involved suggestions over here <https://discussions.apple.com/message/23548999#23548999> about using Disk Utility to delete the Boot Camp partition and create new ones - is that the idea? -
I just updated my RAM (replaced the two 2 gig cards with two Corsair 8 gig cards) and I keep getting a crash report. I have a 21.5 Inch mid 2010 imac. I also am experiencing slow load times with Photoshop and when I try to open Final Cut it says that quartz extreme is not compatible and that I have no VRAM even though I do.
Here is the crash report:

The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated -
My mid 2010 iMac is running very slow.
I have done all the usual things such as checking the disk is clean, closing unnecessary programmes etc. I would rather not replace what seems to be a good machine. Any ideas? Below is an etrecheck report on the machine:

Windows 7 blue screen on Mid 2010 iMac running 10.8
I had previously had the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium running on my mid 2010 iMac running 10.7. However, after upgrading to 10.8, my Windows installation would blue screen after booting. I suspect this was due to upgrading to 10.8 as I didn't make any changes to my Windows install because I only use it for gaming.
I've since removed the Windows partition, and tried a clean install via the Boot Camp Assistant. Windows installs just fine and boots cleanly. However, after installing the Apple Boot Camp drivers (freshly downloaded during the Boot Camp Assistant process), Windows blue screens upon booting. I can repair the Windows install using the built in process, but any attempt to install Apple's drivers results in blue screening. I've tried a clean Windows install and redownloading Apple's drivers several times with no luck.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem? Thank you for your help!I do see this. And I suspect Windows updates. Not Apple (though I would be the first to suspect those too).
iMac graphic drivers for Windows seem touchy and common. The April Windows monthly patch updates hit a few iMac users.
One person found that if they only did updates in smaller steps and not all at once they were fine.
Tuesday this week was another Patch Tuesday.
Games, heat, disk blocks, even RAM errors - one person recently we went round and round... bad blocks not heat, new disk drive and they were 100% stable and rock solid but was hard to rule out. Windows though is easier to test RAM and sectors. And Lion was not even aware or sensitive to those bad sectors and read errors OR RAM errors that Memtest clearly showed (run in OS X).
One person had upgraded RAM, low and behold the new DIMMs were just not fully pushed in and seated and making good contacts.
Try to rule out hardware. Maybe you stumbled on bad block being used now. Run chkdsk if nothing else.
And when updating or preparing to, run Registry cleaner in CCleaner first, Go To %TEMP% and remove everything there. Make a system backup image to another disk drive (NTFS) or with WinClone 3 (HFS, $20) or CampTune ($20).
Or it could just be uninstall one driver at a time, start with GPU, look at what was last installed. Windows drivers are not desireable for GPU. Get the one from AMD or Nvidia instead. -
I can't install Mavericks on the new SSD in my mid-2010 iMac
I recently had my old 500 GB hard drive swapped out for a new 480 GB SSD on my mid-2010 iMac. I made a flash drive into an OSX Mavericks installer per instructions from online tutorials. With the flash drive inserted, I formatted the new SSD in disk utility and then selected it to install Mavericks. However, I can't complete the installation, which is supposed to take 26 minutes, because the screen goes black midway through. I tried this twice and the second time moved the mouse periodically to make sure that the computer wasn't going to sleep. Same thing happened. Installer says that the installation can be recovered, but it will not complete installation. Any advice much appreciated!
Wondering if this can be done
Yes.

Also I have 4 ram slots with 2gb in two of them can I install two sticks of 4gb in the empty ones without impacting performance
Yes. Recommended in pairs. So 2x2GB + 2x4GB SO DIMMS for a total of 12 would be fine.

My A1224 20 inch Imac has a damaged HD, so I am wondering if the 500 gb sata drive installed in my mid 2010 imac can be installed as I am looking to upgrade to SSD and would like to make use of the 'spare' HD.
If t.his is not possible can someone recommend the best drive to by for the older mac?
ThanksMy recommendation for the older drive would be to use it to create a bootable backup, that way you would have 2 backups. Your basic Time Machine backup and a redundant (very good idea for backups!!!) bootable drive. All you need is an expensive enclosure which you can find for less than $30.

I upgraded my mid 2007 IMac to Yosemite and it has been running very slowly since then. I have 3GB of ram. Has this been a problem for anyone else?
Your iMac year and model is low on RAM.
3 GBs is really not enough RAM to operate your Mac under OS X Yosemite OR Mavericks smoothly and efficiently.
New Macs now ship with 8 GBs of RAM as minimum, base installed amount of RAM.
Your Mac model can take a maximum amount of 6 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend purchasing and installing the necessary RAM amount to meet the 6 GB RAM total.
If you live in the U.S. , Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC (macsales.com) has the proper RAM module or kit needed to get your Mac to the 6 GB RAM total limit.
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S6GP/
RAM is user installable and is, relatively, easy to install be newbie and novice Mac users.

Mid 2010 iMac Windows 7 Problem
Hey there,
I have an Mid 2010 iMac running OSX Lion and I have Windows Vista installed via Bootcamp.
I have Windows 7 saved to a USB drive, and I tried to upgrade to 7 directly from within Vista but when the installation was completing I just got a black screen. I restarted a few times, but still got the black screen during the end steps.
I've tried to start from scratch about 3 times now, but it still wont work.
Can this problem be solved?I'm experiencing the black screen crashes since I started using Windows 7. It doesn't matter if it's 32 or 64 bit, the issue is persistent. First I thought it was the updated nVidia drivers, but after putting a fresh installation of Windows I left the original Boot Camp graphics drivers and the same black screen crashes continued.
However, when I'm running various computer games which utilize lots of GPU power, crashing never happens. Then, when I exit and start using Explorer, IE, MS Office and other simple tools, my computer goes dark. I don't believe reinstalling would change anything. This is definitely a unique problem that I just can't seem to figure out. -
Does an Mid-2010 iMac support 32GB 8x4 of ram?
Yes, it does.
Do not get OWC ram, mainly because it is overpriced.
If you are looking to upgrade get it from NewEgg.
Corsair 8GB DDR 1333

I don't know if the problem is the ram upgrade or that I run Lion from an external SSD.
Also, this iMac just returned from service because show an error running hardware test.
