Memory usage jumps from 3 to 5 GB in less than 24 hrs!

I have an iPhone 3GS with 8GB and iOS 5.1.1
Practical available memory is usually 6+GB
Yesterday, when I last backed up, my memory was about half full, a combination of music (0.9GB), photos (0.16GB) and apps (1.4GB).
Just now, not even 24 hrs later, I see my memory usage has jumped up to nearly 5GB, leaving only 1.57GB free. When I look in iTunes, the yellow "other" bar now accounts for 2.2GB but I know I did not add anything there.
The only new thing is that system settings notifies me it wants to install iOS6. I do not want to upgrade. Could it be that the phone downloaded the upgrade, even though I did not tell it to?
If it is not the new OS waiting to be installed, what could it possibly be? And how do I get rid of all that bloat?
Please advise, thanks in advance!

As much as it drives me nuts loosing memory to Other I've decided the best way for it not to be annoying is to never sync or update any software again, I'm very good at being an ostrich when I want to.
I backup my contacts with an iPhone app, all Gmail emails are store permanently on the Gmail server, any music I purchase is automatically backed up in iTunes and if my phone ever does crash and needs a restore I'll do it then, hopefully these things will be fixed at that stage.
Apart from the annoying Other Memory issue, and the battery problem with iOS5, the iPhone has been my most reliable and enjoyable phone to date and I've decided to just enjoy it as it is. I'll replace the phone in about a year when my plan finishes and, by then, most of these bugs should have been sorted out. If not, Samsung looks pretty good

trying to make an ibook and have 800 photos, want format of 8 photos/page, but default is not that- "create" the initial book from iphoto "album" it loads less than 800 pics and then when i change layout i have blanks.
if i clear the book so that it is all blanks and then try to load in the pictures i have it loses the chronology of the pictures that i had established in the album.
is there a way to import photos into an ibook template and keep the original order of the photos without having to do them one at a time?
also, is there a way to insert a photo rather than just dragging it? i have tried the cut and paste funciton but it doesn't seem to work, the target site doesn't seem to register with iphoto.
    many thanks for your help.

Photos are added to book in chronological order.  So if you want to add them to a book in the order you have placed them manually in an album do the following:
1 - select all the photos in the album.
2 - use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option as shown here. Select any date and add 1 minute between photos.
3 - select just one photo from the album and create a book from it.
4 - in the book click on the Options button ➙ Book Settings button and make sure the checkbox for Auto-layout pages is unchecked.
5 - drag the album with your book photos onto the book icon and they will be imported into the Photos tray of the book in your pre-determined order but not into the pages themselves.

  • Is there a fix for battery drain on ipad 2 IOS 5.0.1? drain from 100% to 70% in less than 20min had it on playing music with display off

is there a fix for battery drain on ipad 2 IOS 5.0.1? drain from 100% to 70% in less than 20min had it on playing music with display off

About all that can be suggested is to use the feedback form and talk to Apple. They have communicated with some users, trying to get more info to find out just what the battery drain is so they can fix it. Unfortunately with the myriad of operating systems, apps and individual tweaks, there could be several combinations of settings that are draining the battery.
My personal suspicion is that it has something to do with iCloud and the wifi syncing. (My ipad, before I changed the setting, was reaching out to find a sync on a regular basis. And it may still be doing so, however I set my iTunes to not automatically open to keep my device from trying to sync several times in an evening...not to mention the constant aggravation of iTunes opening regularly)
That said, I could be wrong and it could be an app that users have in common, or several apps.

  • Ps CS6 Memory usage 14GB from 50 meg file???

    Hey,
Does this memory usage make sense?
I'm working on a 48 meg file, but my RAM usage was up to 13.9 gigs. I just restarted Ps and opened the file and it's up to 10.7 gigs.
Previously I was always maxing out 10 gigs everyday out of 12 available gigs in the machine also working on small files.( 25-30 meg on average) IT tried playing with things forever and finally just tried ordering more RAM. They ended up putting 28 Gigs in the box. And I'm really not seeing any advantage in Photoshop, other than my system still runs OK outside of Ps while I'm working. (Well Rhino 3D still crashes from being out of memory, even though there was still 6 gigs free??? but that's for another forum) Mostly it just freaks me out how much RAM it's using for such a small file...?
I'm just drawing, no filters, not too many layer masks. I do have maybe 15-20 vector smart objects in the file, and I'm at 147 layers. The issue I was having is Pen lag on the Cintiq when I draw starts getting horrible as the RAM usage gets higher. I had been restarting Photoshop constantly to get it to release RAM. But I haven't the last couple days since they doubled the RAM in the machine. And obviously on restart the file still needed a lot of RAM???
Anyone got any sugestions? I can live with the lag, sucks, but I can still work. I just don't understand why these small files are using so much RAM. Back in the day on 32 bit systems with 4gigs of RAM I would sometimes create posters/covers/magazine spreads that were 1.5- even 4 gigs that would have to be saved as Tiff's because PS didn't support a file that big. This machine runs like that everyday. At home I've been doing some freelance book covers that get up to 450 megs now and then and it still runs better, Cintiq at home draws smoother than this machine that costs 3-4 times more!
It's a win 7 64 bit box, 2 Dual core 2.4 Xeons. two quadro 2000's, now 28GB ram, OS on a 560?GB drive with files on a Terrabyte drive that gets backed up. My hardrives arent rated very high, 5.9, but at least im working local to the machine as the network is slow as heck around here!
Thanks for any suggestions anyone might have!

Your issue is stroke lag drawing.  You state nothing about the brush and tool being used.  Looking at your hardware and knowing Photoshop is using a lot of ram its most likely swapping a lot ram to scratch disk space.   Faster disk may help. Also having two quadro 2000 does not improve Photoshop performance over having just one.   Yes Photoshop does not give back RAM it allocate during a session even if you close all the open documents.  This may well not be a bad thing. Photoshop is surly managing the RAM space it allocates. Having a lot of ram to work with may well cut down on Photoshop RAM swapping and speed thing up.
Your lag problem may not be a ram problem.   Some brushes require GPU support and the size of the rush can easily increase lag.  For example if I boot my machine and look at RAM used window 7 64bit professional I see 3.5GB allocated 36.5GB free. If I start CS6 open a new document 11"X 14" 300dpi fill it with a spectrum gradient I see 5GB of ram. In use.   If I select the mixer brush tool and a large brush size and make quick brush strokes there is quite a bit of lag and my video card is a quadro 4000 a little faster then your quadro 2000.  My swap space is on SSD much faster then spinning disk ratting 7.9 out of 7.9.... and I have dual 6 core xeons.
Some brush type tools like blur, smudge, dodge, burn sharpen require a lot of sequential repetitive processing .. a large tip smudge always seems lag on forever... Its the repetitive nature of the processes that cause the latency not so much the compute power.

  • Updated my 3gs to 5.0.1 and my battery life has gone from 1.5 days   to less than half a day with no Apps open - how can I roll this back to 5.0 until a fix comes out?

Since updating my 3GS to 5.0.1 my iphone battery has gone, overnight, from 1.5 days + (with multiple open Apps) to less than half a day to completely discharge from 100%.
I desperately need to roll this install back to 5.0 but there are no resources on the internet (or this site) which indicate how I would do that.
    Please help.

You cannot and should not go back to 5.0.
    A fix is coming soon

  • Droid2 data usage jumps from zip to 100's of MB a week

After seeing similar threads with sudden and unexplained data usage, I want to share my problem with one possible SOLUTION!
I was alerted that my account was going over the 150mb limit. I checked online my usage and saw nothing, the usual flat line at zero mb. I assumed it was another sales attempt to get me to up my data service. I rarely even use the internet on my phone (maybe price check at the store) as I always have a laptop or a customer’s fast internet available. BTW - I am an independent IT consultant, MCSE, Novell CNE, HP/Compaq Engineer, and COMPTIA Security Specialist. I admit the phone is a different monster for me. I get a bill with $30 extra charge and go back online (details) to see that my phone started "using" data at up to 144MB at a clip near the end of the billing cycle. I have the 150mb plan. Ouch!!! Now with the new billing cycle, I am on target to hit 3 GB and $400 plus monthly phone bill. I triple checked my settings. Everything is turned off, zero apps (except what came with the phone) are installed. I went to the local Verizon store. They said to turn on my wireless settings and up my data plan to 2 or 3 GB. What??? I don't use the data plan, it was required  with that phone. The usage did decrease with wireless turned on, as it was using my clients Internet and my limited satellite (rural) internet. But my phone was still using over 300mg per month average. In the previous week it already racked up 750 mb, with 3 more weeks left on the billing cycle! I felt like I left my credit card in the Verizon 24 hour ATM machine!
SOLUTION: Last night, I went to a 3rd party Verizon store where they really try to gain your business (commission based?). Immediately the rep saw that the phone was using the internet and NOTHING was running. 3G was staying on.  Phone was up to date, no apps running, nothing. A call to Verizon and 10 minutes later a hard reset (read lose any all not backed up settings) and the phone calmed down. The bogus data charges have seemed to go away overnight.
Was the phone defective? The software hosed? Why would Verizon not readily know about this symptom?
Question to Verizon: After reading tons of complaints from customers with similar complaints.....
Given that in the last 27 months of owning this phone and hardly ever using any data, and being a Verizon customer for 8 or more years.....Are you going to remove the excess data charges from my bill without a fight?

Answer: possibly, but you will have to contact CS. This is a peer-to-peer forum and you will not necessarily even hear from Verizon on these boards.

  • Date data from Crystal Report one day less than Date from Source

    Hi,
I am creating a Crystal Report 4.0 for Enterprise Users (Client Version only) based on a BEx query. I have a field called 'Date' that I am bringing over from the BEx query. It has a format of MM/DD/YYYY. When I view the 'Date' in Crystal Reports, it is displaying as 1 day less from the actual data. For example, in the BEx Query, 'Date' = 11/01/2011.  In Crystal Reports, it is showing up as 10/31/2011, which is one day behind.  I'm not sure what's going on.
    Please help!

Well, this is as weird as it gets!
Here are the observations on SP02:
    1) The Date Characteristic is a day off in the report while the 'Key' shows correct date
    2) It displays in the '30.01.2011' (DD.MM.YYYY)format
    3) When you right-click this field to change the date format, the date option is missing
    4) You create a formula to see if this is a date and it returns True. The formula you can try is :
isdate(). It returns False for any other function like isnumeric() etc
    5) So, this is a date filed, or CR4E thinks this is a date field, however doesn't let us change the format
    6) You cannot use this field with date functions like cdate(); weird!
    7) The only way you can show it the way you want is to write this formula:
    *mid(,4,2)&"/"&left(,2)&"/"&Right(,4)*
This is still a string field, however displays as MM/DD/YYYY.
In Crystal Reports 2011, however, the following formula on the same date field returns a date value, meaning you can further right-click this formula field to change the date format like a normal date field:
    cdate(tonumber(Right(,4)),tonumber(mid(,4,2)),tonumber(left(,2)))*
The same formula, however, throws a 'String is non-numeric error in CR4E and I found that it doesn't like this:
    *tonumber(Right(,4)) ; same error
I've tried a lot of combinations to make this a date field in CR4E, however none works!
So, the only option is to use the formula that I mentioned above.
P.S: If you install Patch 2.10, you'll notice that the Characteristic value shows the correct date. For some reason though, it is in the same format as the 'Key' and if we wish to change the date format, the only possible workaround is to extract the numbers and join like I suggested above.
    Hope this helps!

  • 0.5 MB program has 832 MB memory usage even before it is run

I just uninstalled and re-installed LabVIEW 2011. I was hoping this would do something to lower the memory footprint. Alas, it did not make any difference. This is what I see:
    - When I launch LabVIEW, it uses 94 MB even before I have opened a single VI, i.e. only the front end uses this much memory.
    - When I open the VI (the size of the .vi file is 549 KB), memory usage goes up to 836.4 MB. This is before I have even run the program.
    - Finally, when I run the program, memory usage jumps to 1.17 GB.
I find this memory usage grotesquely high. Can anyone please shed some light on what can be done? I have uploaded the VI. It's a rather simple VI.
    Thanks,
    Neil

    1) If I understand correctly, what you are saying is that when I open the VI, the data structures associated with the intensity charts and waveform graphs are initialized to default values (e.g. 0), so there is memory usage even before the program is run and anything displayed, right?
Yes, a huge array still takes a lot of memory, even though it compresses well for storage inside the VI. Once the VI is ready to run, these arrays need to be allocated in memory.
    nbf wrote:
    2) Is there an alternative to using the value property node that doesn't duplicate the memory content? (e.g. something like pointer or reference in C++?)
One possiblity are data value references. You can open a DVR and fill it inside the subVI, then extract slices later as needed. If done properly, you can also keep the 2D data in a shift register (yes, please learn about them!).
    nbf wrote:
    4) Regarding the clearing of the indicators, could you please tell me how to do that, without removing the color ramp settings?
The color ramps can be set programmatically using property nodes based on array min&max and you can assign colors for the ramp values at will.
    nbf wrote:
    5) You are correct that I am displaying 4000x2000 array data in an intensity graph with 400x200 pixels. But then I change the min/max of the charts/graphs to zoom into the region of interest; I can identify the region of interest only after displaying the full 4000x2000 array of data. I don't know if there is a way around this.
Do you really need to show the 2D data in three different transforms? Maybe one intensity graph is sufficient. You can apply the other transforms on the extracted slices with <<1% of the computing effort. What is the range and resolution of your data? Do you really need DBL or is a smaller representation sufficient (SGL, I16, etc). From looking at the subVI, the raw data is U16. The subVI also involves a coercion to DBL, requireing another data copy in memory. When running, make absolutely sure that the subVI front panel is closed, else additional memory is used for the huge array indicator there. For better performance, you might want to flatten the subVI to the main diagram or at least inline it.
    nbf wrote:
    6) Yes, I use the continuous run mode instead of a toplevel while loop. Is there a disadvantage to doing that?
As Samuel Goldwyn ("A hospital is no place to be sick") might have said: "Run continuously is no way to run a VI"
Run continuously is a debugging tool and has no place in typical use. What it basically does is restart the VI automatically whenever it completes, and as fast as the CPU allows. It is mostly useful to quickly test subVIs that don't have a toplevel loop and play with inputs to verify results. Any toplevel VI needs a while loop surrounding the core code. Period!
So, my suggested plan of action would be:
Use a while loop around your toplevel code
Decide on the minimal representation needed to faithfully show the data.
Keep a single copy of the 2D array in a DVR
You optionally might want to undersample the data for display according to the pixel resolution and use other means of zooming and panning. For zooming, you could extract a differently sampled small array subset and adjust x0 and dx of the axes accordingly.
Use a single 2D graph (if you need to see the various transforms, add a ring selector and transform the 2D array in place. Never show more than one intensity graph.
    See how far you get.

  • Network stream fxp excess memory usage and poor performance

I'm trying to stream some datas à highspeed rate (3 channels à 1Mbytes/s) from my 9030 to my windows host. Because i don't need to use data on the rt side, i choose to forward FXP <+-,24,5> to my host throug a network stream.
To avoid data loose i choose to use a wide buffer of 6000000 with this buffer my memory usage grow from 441mo to 672Mo and my rio is unable to stream the data.
With sgl or double, memory usage is 441 to 491Mo and datas can be streamed continusly.
    Anyone have encoutered this problem?

SQL Developer is java based and relies on the jvm's memory management.
I'm not aware of any memory leaks as such, but memory tends not to be returned to the system.
Queries which return large return sets tend to use a lot of memory (SQL Developer has to build a java table containing all the results for display).
You can restrict the maximum memory allocated by modifying settings in in <sqldeveloper>\ide\bin\ide.conf
    The defaults are -
    AddVMOption -Xmx640M
    AddVMOption -Xms128M

  • SQL Server Memory usage is high

    Hello,
One of our production SQL cluster is eating up more memory on server.
Here are the server specifications :
    OS : Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise
    SQL : SQL Server 2008 SP2 standard edition ( 2 node cluster )
Memory : 16 GB ( 8 Gb to SQL and rest to OS )
    CPU : 8
This server is heavily used by CLR and linked server events.
I have seen the memory usage of databases , it's not using more than 7 GB and leaving 1 GB free in sql memory area ( from our Idera SQL dm
monitoring tool ). I'm suspecting CLR events are causing these spikes.
When i look at the task manager sqlserver.exe is using 15.7 Gb ( close to 16 GB )
Not sure how to see which process are using the memory.
Also we are seeing the below error messages in error log very frequently
10/27/2014 15:23:52,spid1s,Unknown,AppDomain 85 (xxxxxx) is marked for unload due to memory pressure.
I have looked at some blogs in internet, i didnt get any correct info. I have seen this is kind of bug in SQL 2005 32-bit system but we are
    using 64 bit system.

Can anyone please help me on this ?
