Memory Vendors Inconsistent

I am interested in upgrading my iBook G4 1.33 12 inch from the standard 512 MB by adding an extra gig. On page 53 of the iBook manual it says to use PC2100 DDR 266 Type RAM or PC2400 DDR 333 Type RAM. Crucial has listed for my model a PC2700 1 gig of RAM. What does this mean? The manual then goes on to say that the PC2100 configuration is preferred. Can anyone explain this to me?

Hello ZacharyZach,
Apparently most memory manufacturers/suppliers have stopped producing PC2100 RAM now. Just a process of technological/economic advance I guess.
According to previous threads on the subject
PC2700 with work perfectly well as long as all other specs are met. The iBook will see it as 2700 but it will only run at 2100.

hi just purchased a imac intel with 512mb memory, wanted at least another 512mb but the apple store doesnt stock it yet and nobody else stocks it like best buy, compusa.so my question is the imac takes pc5300 ddr2 200 pin notebook memory will pc4700 ddr2 200 pin work or will i have problems

Both Crucial and RamJet do not have it in stock yet and those are two very reliable Mac memory vendors.

  • New Xserve 24GB memory options

    Hello people,
While configuring the new Apple Xserve I was wondering why there is such a big difference in price between 24GB option with 12x2GB and 24GB with 6x4GB!? I understand that the 4GB sticks are a tad more expensive as the 2GB ones but there is a $ 3600 price difference between the two.
Case in which you get the same amount of RAM why would anyone buy the 3x more expensive 4GB option?

Regarding answer 1: So faster means what? 1-2% faster than with 12 dimms or how much faster?
From memory, each additional DIMM on a channel adds 2.5 - 3% overhead, but writes have a higher overhead, so the specifics depend on your usage pattern (e.g. read vs. writes).
Regarding answer 2: No comment. But then again why doesn't apple offer 48GB of RAM in 12x4?
I wondered that myself. Maybe they were scared of showing that price?
Regarding last answer: Are you refering to the economic rules of supply and demand? Because if you are, then i know that when the demand is high the supplier raises the price. Based on this should i conclude that the biggest demand is for 24 GB Xservers with 6x4GB dimms?
No. The laws of supply and demand have two factors to consider. You're assuming that demands is high. I'm saying that supply is low - the 4GB DIMMS are in lower supply than 1 and 2GB DIMMs, therefore they command a higher price. Check any memory vendors' FB-DIMM pricing and you'll see the same (although Apple's pricing is, of course, higher than most).

  • 2GB memory...bad

appears/disappears. Be absolutely sure they work or are guaranteed by distributor.

My input is that, yes, there are bad memory sticks out there period! This has been the case since the dawn of time.
If you shop for memory (or perhaps any consumer good, but I digress...) based on price alone without any regard to reputation, history, or policies of the vendor then there is some Latin phrase that can be tossed at you!
I found a memory vendor years ago that I continue to use to this day. I had a 6500 tower, and it took 4 attempts for them to get me a working 256MB stick. I stuck with them because to my satisfaction they did everything right in an effort to correct the situation, communicated with me constantly, and although at the time it must have cost the several hundred dollars, the made things right and as a result they have a very loyal customer.
To this day I but whatever memory I need from them. Turns out that they have some of the better prices, and a rock-solid guarantee!
What the dude is saying is: Buyer Beware!
I always saw the analogy this way: I am spending a few extra bucks for my Apple brand of CPU because I want quality. It ain't a bad way to go when shopping for memory either folks.
    Peace-

  • Firmware update 9.1.4 and memory

Before installing OS 10.2 or 10.3, I installed firmware update 4.1.9 as required by Apple. This caused my iMac to no longer recognize the (non-Apple) 128 Mb memory module installed about 8 years ago. The Apple System Profiler now lists this memory as "incompatible", leaving me with only 64 Mb of factory installed memory.
If I replace the 128 Mb with new memory, do you think it will be compatible? Has anyone experienced this problem?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the good advice. Memory vendors hesitate to say if their generic memory will work. One mentioned memory from Samsung or Micron as good possibilities, though they cost twice as much as generic. Have you any info on specific brands of memory that are likely to work? I would hate to buy memory and have to return it, or worse yet, find nothing that is "compatible". Thanks again!

  • Kingston memory added to iMac

    Hello,
I got a 20" iMac last year that has a 800 mhz bus. It came with a 1GB of RAM running at 667 mhz. I recently bought a Kingston 2GB that's supposed to be 800 mhz, and installed it. It works Ok, but at 667 mhz, and the profiler writes that the 2GB is 667 mhz.
They told me both would run at the lower speed, but I expected the OS to recognize that it is an 800 mhz memory chip. Do I see 667 because I have another 667 chip installed ? How can I tell the speed of the new chip ?
And here comes the strange part. I decided to pull out the 1GB, both in order to see what the profiler says, and to enjoy a faster memory. When I did it the iMac didn't boot. Not even when I placed the 2GB chip in the number zero slot (there's a number 0 and number 1 slot). The power was on, but nothing happened. Why is that ?
    Regards,
    Rafi.

My only worry is that it forms a mismatch with the other chip and that performance is compromised. How do I know if the system is slower than before ?
The only sure way is to run some benchmark tests with your module vs. with one guaranteed to be compatible with your particular Mac model. Many major memory vendors (including Kingston) offer such modules through a web based selector in which you enter the brand ("Apple"), model line ("iMac"), & so on to arrive at a page listing the part numbers specifically marketed for that Mac. Typically, these modules cost a little more than the generic ones (like "PC2-3200" or whatever), & sometimes there is no real difference between the generic & model-specific modules, but most vendors will not guarantee compatibility or optimum performance of the generic version with any particular computer. A few go as far as testing the model-specific ones in actual computers of that make & model; most rely on matching module specs with the computer maker's detailed specs for those parts.
Basically, if you buy the model-specific modules you are relying on the maker's reputation & expert knowledge to provide the best part; otherwise you are essentially on your own or at the mercy of some local retailer that may or may not have enough expertise to make the right choice.
If you are truly worried about performance, the easiest solution is to see if you can return the module & then buy a "matched pair" or "kit" of modules chosen using the appropriate selector web site. This will ensure that the Mac is using the maximum bandwidth it supports in the most efficient way possible. However, note that a lesser amount of matched memory will not outperform a greater amount of unmatched memory, & that there is no advantage to getting faster memory than the Mac can support. Thus, don't replace a 1 GB & a two GB module with two one GB modules because 3 GB will always perform better than 2 GB, matched or not.

  • Wrong Memory RAM?

I Recently bought two sticks of RAM (DDR3 1333 Mhz 8GB AVANT) for My Mac Mini i5! Shortly after that, the Mac SUDDENLY RESTARTS with a Gray SCREEN and a MESSAGE  in MANY LANGUAGES, saying it has to be RESTARTED for an ERROR! then I thought: is posible that RAM is causing the problem? that means that I have to buy an APPLE MEMORY RAM ONLY?

The RAM may well be the cause of the problem, yes. Apple does not make their own RAM, so no, you do not have to buy from Apple, but not all vendors provide high-quality RAM. You may well just have received defective or out-of-specification memory. If the Mac works correctly with the original RAM, get your memory vendor to replace the DIMMs, and in problems persist, return the RAM for a refund any try RAM from another vendor.
    Regards.

  • Installing new memory resort to clean startup?

This maybe a very obvious question but here goes anyway...I'm about to upgrade my MacBook Pro from the standard 4GB memory to 8GB. My question is whether the switch will erase all of my current settings, apps & files on my computer and revert back to factory settings or 'Clean StartUp'.
I'm not worried about loosing any of my files, apps and/or settings,  I''m asking because I want to start fresh after I switch to the 8GB...I'm just not sure whether this will happen automatically or whether I will have to manually restore back to factory settings once the new memory is installed.
Also, any tips or advice to look out for when re-installing apps that have pre-existing serial numbers would also be very helpful (i.e Microsoft Office)
    Thank You!!
    M

    shmonz,
no, replacing your memory modules will not affect the contents of your hard disk. The main concern is ensuring that static electricity is discharged before handling your memory modules, both new and old, since static electricity can functionally destroy them. Occasionally new memory modules exhibit defects that weren’t caught at the factory, so if you notice programs misbehaving after you install the new memory, try reïnstalling the old memory to see if the misbehavior disappears. If it does disappear, then contact the memory vendor to obtain replacements for your new memory.

This system was bought in Israel, and is now running in Canada. Why am I telling this? because it was working flawlesly in Israel for about 6 months, it is heaily limping now in Canada:
    - The power supply is a manual switched multi voltage. I switched it to 110v (Isreal is 220v 50Hz) and the system booted normally
    - However, every few days, I noticed that the system had rebooted itself. Always in the middle of the night.
    - First, I suspected heat issues. It was quite hot lately, and (against my will...), the air-con is not working 24h in the house. At nights it's off.
    - Then I disabled the auto restart (and the main power switch, fearing my little monsters are shuting down my machine), and found a BSOD every morning!
    - The first few times it was a HALT on the VIAMRAID.SYS. Which led me to suspect the HD. But then it appeared few times with other drivers (USB... something).
    - I feared the HD is bad, and ran some tests on it, nothing was conclusive.
    - Eventually... I ran Memtest86 (and Memtest86+) and guess what... it found errors!! Lots of them, but always on test #7, and with both sticks, and on each one separately.
A friend came up with this theory:
When moved to 110v environment, the system does work, but the exact output voltage may be different, so it may be that the memory is not getting what it should.
    1) How can I know what it "should" be getting (with this God-forsaken memory vendor...)?
    2) How do I tell what it is getting?
    3) What is the meaning of that notation of 2-2-2-2 (there is nothing like that marked on my RAM sticks)
    4) What is the meaning of the two "Green" slots and the one "Purple" slot (CHA CHB) on that board? (the two sticks are in the green slots)
Any other helpl would be highly appreciated...

Ok - Latest update from the field...
I tried all sorts of changes to the BIOS - nothing.
I went out and bought a new 512 stick. put it in (with BIOS on defaults, which actually means lowest performace, should be good), for a while - no errors. Took a while this time - and sure the ugly red lines started to crowl on the screen (did I mention few times it is ONLY on test #7?).
I tried disconnecting other stuff from the PC (all non-importnat PCI, the HD, etc) - same.
Then I felt that the mem stick was quite hot!! - actually, i never felt it before i had this issues, but it was too hot for my liking. Also, my VID card is a simple one, and has no vent on it - gets hot quite quickly.
MIND YOU that all these test are being executed with the case-side being open, and a floor vent throwing air the direction of the system.
And then I went to the final test:
I took the system closer the the air-con vents in the floor, turned it so the open side is facing the air-con, and put the small floor vent facing the system.
I let it run for two hours - no red lines!!!
So??? Heating problems? with so little load (testmem), in an airconditioned room? with an open case????
    HELP PLEASE
P.S: Although these days in Toronto are quite warm (on the hot side), Isreal, in general, is a hotter place. Never had an issue there
P.S2: I tried the system as a 220v system taking its power from a large 110->220 step-up converter, and it did the same.

  • K9N2 Diamond and Memory voltage ?

The default voltage on my  DIMMS  seems to be  1.9 volts.
This from info from the MSI  overclocking utlity.
Presently the machine is stable  at 800 Mhz  Dimm Clock.
But it is unstable  at 1066 Mhz Dimm Clock.

needs 2.1 Volts   to run at  1066 Mhz .

     Thanks,
Well it seems to much better at 1066 Mhz with 2.1 volts on the dimms.  ,  used to crash  within minutes,  but does'nt do that now.

  • MSI 770-C45 locking up/blue screening/other errors on boot

I recently built a new HTPC and have been having allot of problems getting it to boot.  It may take 10-15min of trying to boot up over and over with random blue screens, lockups, or errors that the C drive needs to be checked for consistency before Windows will finally load up and work.  At first I thought it was a bad drive, but according to Western Digital’s HDD Diag util, both the controller and the drives surface checks out OK.  I just wiped the drive out and reinstalled Windows 7 again, and this time went with IDE instead of AHCI, hoping it was a driver issue.  It only worked well for a day before the same problems started rearing their ugly head again.
At this point I don’t know if I have a memory issue, a CMOS setting wrong (which are All Auto), or what.  I hoping someone here might have an idea of what this problem could be.

According to MSI, my motherboard supports the following modules:
    DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600*(OC)
    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=171&cat3_no=656&prod_no=1812
This are the speeds of the DDR 3 RAM supported ,1600Mhz beeing done with overclocking ,because the CPU memory controller is no able to do 1600 by default.

When I look at the test results for my Motherboard:
    http://www.msi.com/uploads/test_report/TR10_1812.pdf
I see 1333 RAM list like PC11000 DDR III RAM (DDR-1333).  However, If I go to a site like Bestbuy or NewEgg and search for DDR3 1333, it shows results like Corsair - 2-Pack 2GB PC3-10666 DDR3 DIMM Memory Kit.  I see PC3-10666 and PC3-10600, but nothing for PC11000.
The only mention of 1333 modules on the test report is for 1333 OC
When you see the PC 11000 DDR3 or PC3 10666 specifications they are refering to the theoretical bandwidth ,it s related to the frequency of course ,but it s something else it s a data rate. Its wikipedia but it s good enough -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_3 Some specs are atipical like 10666 ,marketing thngyes
Search the internet for memory that works ok with your CPU ,look for "real" DDR 3 1066Mhz or DDR 3 1333Mhz."real" means that that memory should be able to run at those frequencies without voltage increase over the default one.Usually when a memory vendor says you need to increase voltage for a specific frequency it means that you overclock and that there is no warranty they will work in your configuration.
So you need DDR 3 1066Mhz or DDR 3 1333Mhz ,it needs to be AMD tested memory and it needs to be a known to work RAM on MSI motherboards timings wise.Look up on newegg and see what works.
The performance gaps between 1066 and 1333 are small in real practice and you can overcome some loss by using a "real" DDR 3 1066Mhz , tweaking different timings ,using Command Rate of 1T for example ( you may "feel" it smoother in desktop than a 1333Mhz at 2T).

  • Can a Mac mini 1,1 run a 27-inch monitor?

I think my old 23" Apple Cinema Display has finally bitten the dust, so I'm looking for a new monitor. This 27" BenQ sounds good, but will my early 2006 Mac mini run it?
    http://shop.benq.us/ProductDetail.aspx?id=378
Part of my system specs are in my signature, but here also is info from System Profiler:
    1.66 Intel Core Duo
    Graphics Chipset Model:          GMA 950
      Type:          GPU
      Bus:          Built-In
VRAM (Total):          64 MB of Shared System Memory
      Vendor:          Intel (0x8086)
    So my questions are:
Will my Mac mini run this monitor?
If it does, will performance take a hit?
Should I drop down to the 24 inch BenQ model?
I would be very grateful for any advice. Thanks!

Monitor support has to do with pixels and not size.  Both
the 24" and 27" BenQ have the same pixels (1920x1080).
One just packs the pixels denser (i.e. more pixels per inch).
Although it will support such displays, certain activities at that resolution
may be pushing the GMA 950.  That said, if it worked well with the
23" Apple display, the new ones should be fine.

I had Purchased the Game Spore Creature Creator the Starter Kit which is just the Creature creator game and not the actual game itself. I wasn't able to install the the game on my computer because I don't have the right or not at all Video and Graphic Card install on my computer. I had Contacted the Company "EA" that puts out the Game Spore, this is what they said what the game requirements are: The minimum system requirements for Spore and Spore the Galactic Edition for Mac are as follows:
    * Mac OS X 10.5.3 Leopard or higher
    * Intel Core Duo Processor
    * 1024 MB RAM
    * At least 345 MB of hard drive space for installation, plus additional space for created creatures. (260 MB for the Trial Edition)
    * Video Card - ATI X1600 or NVidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100
This game will not run on PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) based Mac systems (PowerMac).
For computers using built-in graphics chipsets, the game requires at least: an Intel Integrated Chipset GMA X3100 or Dual 2.0GHz CPUs, or 1.7GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent
    Supported Video Cards
    ATI Radeon(TM) series
    * X1600, X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600

    Thank You,
    Trisha Foster
    <Edited by Moderator>

    Hi Trisha,
The only modern Mac's with video cards are the Mac Pro and Xserve (server) systems. They both are priced quite a bit higher than any Mac Mini.
Some systems, like the Mac Book Pro laptop can be ordered with different graphics cards, but that has be done when the system is built, as it is not replaceable once the system is built. To find out which systems, go to store.apple.com. For each system that you select, you can see if there's an option for a better video card.

  • Cannot use boot camp

According to the apple support website, I have to document my panic kernel in Apple Discussions (a lot of information). I hope to get an answer.
*Documenting the problem: partitioning and formatting partition hard drive MacBook for use of Windows (Boot Camp)*
    Date: April, 18th, 2008
    *Description of the problem:*
According to the manual, I tried to create a partition of 20GB, but after several minutes I got the ´panic kernel´. (“You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button”)
After restart I can ask for the report (see problem details):
After saving the problem details, I send the report to apple (2 weeks ago).
I guessed something has happened, part of the disk was gone. However, bootcamp will not proceed further (install windows, see manual).
With a startup from the leopard DVD it is possible to fix the problems, but every time I try to use boot camp, I got the same panic kernel and messages (till now 3 times). So, it seems reproducable.
During the fixing process Disk utility says (in red, translated from dutch):
    - Minor adjustments in volumebit
    - elegible number of files on volume
    - elegible number of volume directories
    - elegible number of free blocks on volume
At the end the follwing text appears (in green):
The volume 'Martijn's schijf' is fixed
After that, no problem at all☺
Nevertheless, in this way it is not possible to install windows. I would like to ask you if this problem is already known and/or described. I have searched on the net, but most of the information in forums is too detailed for me. Therefore, I try this way first.

Reformat the drive. Disk Utility Partition, and create one new partition, don't use the current setup. Then either restore from backup or fresh install. I would clone the drive before ever starting the BootCamp Assistant process.
Most kernel panics are memory or hardware. In this case, well, lots of threads with "Partition Failure" and / or "kernel panic." A google for "Mac kernel panic" will show a number of sites with FAQs.
Disk Warrior is also a handy disk repair program. Not only backup and have a bootable clone, but one with an emergency boot volume to use instead of relying on DVD and Disk Utility, and so you are running the latest versions.
