Mental blockage !!!!!!!!

Hi everyone
I have spent some time now playing with & trying to get to grips with LR but there are some things that I just cannot nail down & fully understand although I have made some progress thanks to you guys on these forums, Scot Kelbys book & the LL videos. I always seem to skirt around the bits I don't fully understand, and I admit that even if I can use something I do like to understand how it ticks. For now lets just think of the develop module which is the one I use most & forget the pro's or cons of DNG format & DAM.
To me LR is a tool that produces an instruction script for each image you adjust and either saves these instructions in an XMP sidecar file or within a DNG, I accept this and the instructions make sense.
But whats the pro's & cons of importing my NEF's into LR as NEF's, converting them to DNG & then import them into LR or convert to DNG imediately after importing into LR as NEF's ???????????????
I don't think I am going to embed the original NEF into the DNG so either the LR or standalone convertor is Ok .
If LR treats all file formats the same for editing purposes and makes no changes to the original then do I have the same amount of data in a DNG as in the original NEF, I suppose what I am asking is what happens during the conversions. NEF converted to TIF & printed, or NEF to DNG to TIF & printed. You can see my confussion, the final results must depend upon both the Adobe RAW conversion plus also the DNG conversion, but then if the RAW convertor is good does it mater if the output file is TIF or DNG ?

>A DNG can be returned to the original state of the RAW, in terms of appearance of the image, whether you tweak a RAW then convert to DNG or convert to DNG then tweak.
Does it matter that this statement is FALSE? Much to my amazement I'm surprised it hasn't been corrected by some of the more senior people in this forum. IMO, a better metaphor might be:
DNG is first and foremost a container. Period. It's like digital tupperware -- only with well organized slots and locking compartments. What you store inside is secondary. A DNG can store raw data, metadata, bitmapped data, and/or other file types (like the camera makers raw file). In fact it's unlimited as to what it can contain because it's extensible. The flip to that benefit is that it may also be limited to what can be retrieved. Caveat Emptor.
So what's inside? A DNG can contain the raw data -- or a partial set , and/or either a reversible, or irreversible transformed data set. That is left entirely up to the DNG creator application -- which may differ by way of vendor. Access to information inside this digital tupperware also depends on what the DNG reader is designed or licensed to unlock and read. So while it's true all your original data can be stored inside a DNG, it isn't necessarily so.
Currently, DNGs work pretty well across the Adobe suite of applications because it's obviously in Adobe's interests to promote as much compatability as possible. I suspect this will always be the case when using Adobe's premium tools.
But let's run through this with an example (i.e. NEF). With some DNG writers (currently not LR) one has the option of embedding the original NEF inside the DNG -- in which case you are guarenteed a copy of:
1. all the original image data
2. all the original metadata
3. the original roadmap as to where it was all filed away.
Without the original, you get a transformation of the original data. In general, this is a good thing because it standardizes where the most common information used to render a raw file is stored. Any DNG reader would have the capability to retrieve that common data without knowing anything about the camera.
However, the danger of TRANSFORMING something is that it can be lossy. It might not take you exactly or even remotely back to where you were. It depends on the transformation. For instance, DxO cooks your raw data with corrections before it stores it inside a DNG. Even when transforming raw files data is changed. You can verify this by comparing the color temperatures written inside an NEF --as opened within NX --vs. the color temperatures calculated when written to DNG. They are not identical. That's not a criticism, as TK has gone to great lengths explaining why that is so, but it's a fact. I have additional concerns as to whether all the original public and private metadata is identically transferred when raw files are transformed inside a DNG. In some cases the original data is not kept which is why some people recommend archiving the original. Only you know whether this is going to impact you. Or maybe you don't know and want to take additional precautions.
>A RAW is a DNG is a RAW -- that's just what I needed to understand!
That makes about as much sense as a HAMBURGER is a WATERMELON is a CHEESEBURGER. See above. :~)
A DNG is just a container. Digital tupperware. It has secret compartments, locked compartments, may contain raw data, or semi to fully cooked data. The integrity of the raw conversion and retrieval of data is entirely dependent on the application.
You may not always safely step backward to the original raw state -- unless you keep a copy of the original.
Why is this important? If you need to ask, you're workflow is probably not critical enough that it matters. Some of the careless assertions being made seem to verify this. YMMV. :-)

I am using mutiple select queries to fetch data from Project Server 2010 DB(its sharepoint DB) and these queries fetch data in Excel BI report by establishing connection with DB using instance name and all. I have enhance all these select queries and data
is being fetched in secs. but when more than one copy of same Excel BI report is refreshed using 'Refresh All' option, then these select queries cause blockage on DB.
Please let me know mitigation for this blockage issue.

  • ITunes 7.3.1 under VISTA causes DVD/CD driver conflicts or blockage !!!!!!!

After installing iTunes under VISTA I noticed that both of my DVD/CD drives were missing. Device manager shows a conflict or blockage causing the drivers not to start.
I tried iTunes 7.3.1 on another PC with VISTA and it did the same thing. I had to remove iTunes since it basically disables by DVD and CD drives. Any ideas?

Actually everything is working just fine after I had
uninstalled iTunes 7.3.1. Oh, I didn't have error
code 31 but just for your information it was 10.
Please don't give bad advice to people or perhaps to
some that don't even know what regedit is or will
even do for that matter. Apple should be able to
put together a script that will get the job done
correctly without having the enduser try a dangerous
    tool.
I love how you're asking for help, and then refusing the help provided. Regedit is complex, but that article goes through it step by step, and even gets you to export the specific registry tree that you will be working on, so you can set the registry back to how it was before.
However, the regedit fix that was mentioned earlier would be the easiest thing to go through. If you go through the steps and it doesn't work, try going through the exact same steps again, except skip the step where is says to enter 'GEARAspiWDM' in the UpperFilters. If you just leave UpperFilters blank, and restart the computer, the CD drive should re-appear, and iTunes should work (but give you a message saying that you'll be unable to import or burn CD's... although most of the time you still can anyways). If it doesn't work, you can always import the registry tree back to how it was before, and close out of that scary regedit program.

  • Problem with Maya Mental Ray with new 8 core

I am having difficulties with my new mac pro 2009. Mental Ray for Maya is limited to 8 threads (cores normally) but with hyperthreading these 8 threads don't get distributed to each of the 8 cores and instead get split up among the 16 virtual cores that hyperthreading creates. This means rendering is significantly less efficient than it might be. There needs to be a way to turn off hyperthreading (either that or Autodesk need to sort it out within Maya)

please see this thread for more info about my problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=665155
Yes it really is causing a lot of hassle and is a bit daft that I can have 8 threads running, 6 of which all group together on 3 physical cores and only 2 threads having their own cores. DAFT.

  • Safari going mental

Hi, my iPad keeps going mental while safari is open. It keeps changing pages and expanding and reducing the screen size. When it starts doing this I do a reset (home and on/off button) when it come back on it stops doing the mental bit for a while but the page back button won't work!! The screen is clean and dry. Any ideas?

    Hi Demo,
Its just done the same thing again, with safari open it expands the screen then starts opening different pages. It's a bit like someone else is remotely using the iPad which is well scarey.
Anyway thinking back I did drop my iPad a couple of days before this all started happening and put 4 or 5 nice scratches on the screen, 2 of which I can feel with my nail :( it dropped and slid on a laminate floor. Do you think this may have something to do with it?
After it started going funny again this morning I have cleared all the things you told me in your earlier post but one thing I have noticed is the top 5mm of my touch screen doesn't work (the area furthest from the home button)
    Your thoughts are appreciated, Jon

  • Has anyone got mental ray to work on qmaster?

I keep getting segment failed messages on some machines when i render mental ray it spends about half an hour rendering two tga frames which are only 4k and can't be opened, if i lower the resolution and set it only to do 10 frames it works, its got me flumuxed does anyone know is mental ray satellite any better. It works fine incidently if i render with software renderer. Incidently i know you have to put -r rm in the settings. but any ideas would be appreciated

ok got it to work easiest way is to make sure the shared drive is mounted on all machines and put all files i.e textures and mb file on there too and in the qmaster make sure you specify the working directory as the shared drive as well as the project directory

  • Looking for iphone games for mental math or vedic math training?  Dear all,

Looking for iphone games for mental math or vedic math training?
    Dear all,
I am a fan of mental math and/or vedic math etc. and I want to utilize my spare time to do some training whenever I am idle.
That's why I want to buy an iphone. In fact, I buy iphone because it can be a game machine in addition to a phone.
For example, I can utilize my time commuting on subway to do some training...
But I couldn't find good mental math and/or vedic math training game on iphone.
I am an adult so those too-simple problems such as 2*9=18 are not interesting to me,
I would like to exercise something like 123x45, etc.
Could anybody give me some pointers?
    Thanks!

need quick math training games,... thanks!

  • Problème acquisition codeur incrémental

    Bonjour,
    - Labview 2011
    - Module cRIO NI 9075
    - DC Brushed Servo Drive NI 9505
    - Codeur incrémental HEDS-5540 A13
Ci-joint vous trouverez le projet réalisé.

  • How to handle Queue blockage due to application error in BPM

    Hi
In the integration process that i have created, there is a SyncSend(calling a webservice using SOAP adapter) Step.
Sometimes the response message from the receiver application may be a Fault message.
Whenever a fault message is sent back to integration process in XI, the message fails and the queue is blocked.
Bacause of this queue blockage , the next messages to be processed are getting blocked.
    How to handle this?
    Thanks

do you have configured the fault message mapping in the Operation Mapping? what error does the sxi_monitor display?

Thanks for the helpful reply, Kenneth! I'll definitely look into the Speck case, whichever way I go.
"Some display issues have to do with the display and not the backlight, so don't expect 100% happiness. Ever."
Agreed. I've seen some really bad MBP's and I was hoping that they've gotten better. I've actually read a lot of threads here about how the Macbook's screen is generally better quality (at least before the update).
"There is never enough monitor. If that is a serious concern, you should get a large external monitor. 15 is just not that much bigger than 13. 23 is big!"
I totally agree. However, regarding my current situation of leaving the country and not having access to an external monitor, I think I might be better off having 15" to play with abroad.
"Beauty is not everything. If you need a separate graphics card, an expresscard slot, 4GB RAM, or FW800, get the MBP. Also, it will be faster GHz for GHz because of the cache, among other things."
Sometimes I wonder if I have OCD with keeping nice things clean...which is why I think that white might not be the best choice for me. I noticed that you have a Macbook Pro yourself. Do you feel like it's hard to keep clean, or that you have to treat it gently?
About the extra options that you mention, I'll be honest: I don't have a specific need for them. I'd like to get a FW enclosure for my external drive, but I don't currently own one. I'd also like to have a graphics card, though I don't really play computer games. I wouldn't like to rule it out for the future though...I'm going to have a lot of free time in Costa Rica. Also, the 4GB of RAM will likely be more important moving forward. I'm planning on keeping my next computer for the next 2-3 years, so I just want to make sure that I have few things to regret.
" In 2 or 3 years you can buy the MBP Extreem with a 10GHz processor, 2 TB HD, and direct output to your optic nerves for the same price, and already have the big monitor!"
    Hilarious. Thanks for that.

  • Illustrator 10, Convert to Profile: mental block or sudden blindness?

I've either hit a mental block or have become temporarily blind, but I cannot find "Convert to Profile" in Illustrator 10.0.3 Mac, running Tiger 10.4.11.
Any hint or slap on the head that might jog my memory will be appreciated.  The Help files have not been helpful yet.  As the fortune cookie said, old age always comes at a most inopportune time.

Or do you mean Assign Current Working Space (colour profile) when opening a file?
No!  When you Assign a profile, you preserve the numbers but you change (wreck the hell out of) the colors.  When you Convert to a Profile, you change the numbers but you preserve the colors.
It seems that old AI 10 did not have such a menu Command in the Edit menu, as Photoshop has, so the workaround would be to close the file and pen it again, at which time you do get presented with the choice of CONVERTING to a profile.

No, Changing your Color settings is a global dialog box that affects your working space, not your open document.
Thank you for your time anyway.

  • Security Update 2012-001 Version 1.1 broke Autodesk Mental Ray?

I ran Security Update 2012-001 Version 1.1 last night. Now, I can't render using the Mental Ray option in Maya 2011 (Hotfix 3 x64). I had just rendered before I ran the update.

Hopefully this is a coincidence. If not, then our FIX for the FIX is yet another failure.
