Menu and select button causing ipod to reset

Hi,
Has anyone else had problems with their menu and select buttons causing the ipod to reset itself? As of now, I can't use either of those buttons without it resetting. I've tried using the updater, and I've tried manually resetting it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Right click on the iPod Nano icon.  "Eject" should pop up.  At least that is the way it works on Macs.

If it is otherwise working, you can change the battery.  If you want to do it yourself, you can buy the part on eBay and other online sources.  Just make sure you know the type of iPod you have so that you get the right part.

There are online guides, including the ones on this web site
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod
(Note:  Most replacement batteries come with plastic/nylon tools seen in the guides.)
You can also have a repair business do the work.
If it is just the battery, if you do a Reset (using the Menu and Select buttons) while it is connect to your computer, I think it should still be recognized by iTunes.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • How do i unfreeze my ipod when ive already tried the menu and select button and that didnt help?

how do i unfreeze my ipod when ive already tried the menu and select button and that didnt help?

How long did you press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together?  Have you tried doing this procedure more than once?  Is the hold switch in the Off position?
If nothing else, let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up again.

It might seem so.., but have you actually tried resetting it? It might just work.
If not, I'd try restoring it.

  • My classic is stuck on a blank screen and it won't connect to any device or reset when I hold the menu and center buttons. Any ideas what's up and how to fix it?

I know click hold on and off then hold the menu and center button until the apple logo appears. I have tried this so many times and my iPod Classic is still unresponsive! I've tried plugging my iPod into my Mac, my wall charger, my ihome, everything, but nothing works. It won't connect to iTunes to restore or anything. I've tried leaving it unplugged long enough to let the battery die and then tried plugging it in, a method I've utilized successfully with other iPods but that didn't work either. I really just starting to lose faith in the quality of this product. The first classic I bought didn't work at all and I had to exchange it. This one I bought to replace my 5 year old nano and it hasn't even lasted 7 months! Somebody please offer me a solution and assure me that I didn't waste $250 on a crap piece of technology. I'm desperate!

Although you say you have let the battery drain, was it for long enough? Since nothing else that you've tried so far has worked, I suggest that you leave the iPod unplugged for at least four days, preferably a week. That way, if something is stopping the iPod from turning the screen on, then whatever it is will drain the battrey. However, since the screen isn't on, that may take longer than if the screen was on.
Then, after that time, plug the iPod into a power source and leave it alone for at least thirty minutes. Only after thirty minutes will it show any signs of life, but you should leave it until it is fully charged before trying to use it.
If you get to this stage, the fact that the battery has drained will cause the iPod to reset when it springs back to life.
Let us know how you get on.

  • My Apple TV has been working fine, even earlier today.  When I turned it on this afternoon, the TV indicated that "no signal" was being received.  Restarted, unplugged, reset by holding menu and down button, etc. still no signal.  Thoughts?

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
        1.    Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
        2.    Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
        3.    Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
        4.    Open iTunes.
        5.    Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

    Hello Lola51,
I would be concerned as well if my iPod was unresponsive.  I found a resource that I think would help in a situation like this.
I recommend following the steps in this troubleshooting assistant:

  • Help!  My apple TV doesn't respond to the remote.  I've tried resetting by pressing the menu and rewind buttons for six seconds and it isn't working.

My apple TV is not responding to the remote.  I've tried pressing the menu and rewind buttons for six seconds and no response, I've also tried changing the battery and that hasn't done anything either.  Not sure what else to do!

Have you tried disconnecting the power chord on the Apple TV for a few seconds, and then plugging it back in to restart the Apple TV? There may be a glitch with the ATV, and not the remote.

  • Wheel and select button unresponsive

My wheel and select button are completely unresponsive other than to reset. I've reset it like 10 times, and restored factory settings 2 times. I have the most up to date firmware and itunes.
I can't let the battery drain because it is shutting off automatically now since I can't punch in the settings.

I have the same problem - see below.
Immediately after upgrading to iTunes 7.1.1.5. and updating, charging, and syncing, my iPod does not function properly.
    Symptoms:
_The click wheel does not seem to work any more. The hold switch is set correctly to the left position.
_No response to a reset by holding menu / select buttons for 10 secs.
_When iPod is plugged into my CPU it seems to act normally - the screen lights up briefly and displays the message "do not connect" as iTunes starts and syncs all checked songs like normal.
_After the sync the iPod display a full battery icon.
_When the iPod is unplugged from the CPU the iPod display is lit briefly, displays the menu where the user selects which language to use. There is a small icon that looks like a lock at the top of the screen. After about 15 secs the screen goes blank despite trying to scroll and make selections with the click wheel.
_The iPod does not respond to the click wheel when in Itunes (which may be normal) or when disconnected (even after switching the hold switch back and forth several times).
_The iPod shows up in iTunes and in My Computer.
_Songs on iPod open in Windows Media Player and play OK when selected directly from My Computer.
I tried restoring (1.3.1.) a dozen times and upgrading the iPod several times from Itunes and also restoring ITunes 5 but no luck.
This iPod (2g) is 15 mos. old and worked perfectly just prior to the upgrade to 7.1.1.5..
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Menu and play buttons unresponsive

The menu and play buttons on the clickwheel are unresponsive, the interface is otherwise fine.  I cannot turn the ipod off or return to menus after selecting something.  I have already tried updating and restoring the ipod, I don't know what else to do.

  • The menu and back button don't work. 3rd gen nano

The menu and back buttons on my 3rd generation nano don't work. I've reset it. Let it die and recharged it. Still doesn't work....What should I try next?

Set the iPod up for a repair/replacement via Apple or a third party repair company.  Here is Apple's repair pricing.

  • HT1363 after pressing Menu and Select, when the Apple sign appears, I immediately press select and play/pause, but again the red X sign appears. so it does not go to Disk Mode. Has anyone had this issue? I would be grateful if you could tell me what to do

The red X has appeared in my Ipod Classic Screen. Apple support tells me that I need to first put it manually on disk mode. to put it on disk mode I ought to press menu and select buton togeher, when the apple sign shows up, hold select button and play together.
After pressing Menu and Select, when the Apple sign appears, I immediately press select and play/pause, but again the red X sign appears. so it does not go to Disk Mode. Has anyone had this issue? I would be grateful if you could tell me what to do.

Thank you everyone for the replies. It defiantly helped point me in the right direction. With any luck, I will have my replacement phone sometime tomorrow.
I was able to call the iPhone support line this morning. The Apple rep stayed on the line with me for about an hour until he was sure the new phone would ship out. For $199 plus $29 for expedited handling I was able to get the replacement ordered with overnight shipping. Since the replacement doesn’t involve ATT&T I have no reason to suspect any further delays. Kudos to the Apple rep that helped me straighten out this mess.
It’s a shame that AT&T cares so little for their existing customers. Not only did they try to sell me the same phone for $499, they outright refused to help me. They also lied to me on numerous occasions and strung me along for close to three weeks for something that only took an hour to complete with the Apple rep.
I filed a formal complaint against AT&T through the Better Business Burrow as well as requested a review of our cooperate contract with AT&T. Our company currently has over 3000 phones with AT&T and there contract comes up for bid the end of our fiscal year (this October). We will be giving it heavy consideration before we consider renewing their contract.
I doubt that any of that will matter to a company that cares so little about their customers, but you never know.
Thanks again for all your help. I would probably still be trying to get my replacement for the next few months if it wasn’t for your suggestions.

  • Classic: will not recharge; apple logo flashes every few seconds then fades away; have tried the 'reboot' advice i.e. move hold switch on and off, hold menu and center button, no success.  have tried this many times and kept connected for several hours.
