didnt work
i'm gonna cry!
i tried logging out, and restarting my computer. still not there.
Try this:
mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SystemUIServer.plist ~/Desktop;killall SystemUIServer
If that doesn't work right away, logging out and in should make it take effect.
If not, create a new user account and see if the problem happens there as well.
Good luck!

  • After upgrading to OS 10.10 some fonts appear blurry. Specifically top menu bar, desktop icons, mail

After upgrading to OS 10.10, some fonts appear blurry. Specifically top menu bar, desktop icons, mail and Safari. This only occurs after the computer has been running for awhile, not immediately after startup. I'm running an iMac, 20 inch, Mid-2007 with the following graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB.
It's not a huge problem, just darn annoying. Thoughts anyone?

    Hi,
Please note that this upgrade related problem would very likely be what has been covered by the support document at the link below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537
If you also find any files named to include MessageSorting (which would mean you once have upgraded from a version of OSX earlier than 10.4, which is clearly the case for you), remove those, also, but never restore those.
Often this is all that needs to be done, but you might then need to force an overall reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index. Note the special instructions when forcing the reindexing of IMAP or Exchange accounts in the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
This will force the reindexing of all the POP mailboxes and all On My Mac mailboxes. With regard to any IMAP accounts if you have any, the practical result of this action of removing the account folder, is that with the IMAP account still set up in the Preferences, Mail will connect to the IMAP server and create a new account folder, and while doing so will index the messages in the mailbox folders of the IMAP accounts on the server.
    Keep me posted.

  • Menu bar display icon disappears after resize

My menubar display icon goes away after resize and the checkbox for it in system preferences unchecks itself. Has anyone else experienced this bug? Closing system preferences between resizes doesn't fix. Restarting machine doesn't fix. (Of course with my new macbook pro retina, I'm constantly resizing the display between resolutions that make my jaw drop to resolutions that I can read text on, so I need it in the menu bar.)

Thanks for the link. Looks like it was a program I didn't even remember I installed, WiFind, which was causing the problem. I got rid of it and it looks like the menu bar icons are working again. Strange thing was when I tried to search for WiFind neither Spotlight nor the Find function in the finder could locate it. But there it was, right in the the Library/InputManagers folder. It's happened to me before I and don't know why. Anyway...
I hope I don't have any more problems with this update but I've been burned by Leopard so many times I'm not counting on it! I'll try and stay positive.

  • Menu bar, desktop icon and folder text all appearing as captial A in a box.

This morning, following software install of Quicktime and iTunes, my Powermac 5 (OS X 10.4.10)began displaying all header/menu text in a capital A (surrounded by a box outline). It would appear as if the fonts have all been replaced by the letter A. This makes navigation next to impossible. I have tried re-booting in safe mode, but it shows the same thing. When I ran my install disc, there was no option to repair. Is there anyone who can help me? Has anyone else seen/heard of this problem?

Those symbols are Apple's Last Resort font.

  • Adobe Reader files cause the menu bar & dock to disappear.

Some files that I download from the internet & open in Adobe Reader Version 10.0.2 cause the menu bar & dock to disappear. If I click on the desktop below this Adobe Reader window they reappear, but disappear once again when I click on this Adobe Reader window. It is not Full Screen mode but something else. Any suggestions on how to view these files in the normal manner would be appreciated. Thank you.

I've never installed Adobe Reader to one of my Mac's since Apple started providing Preview. I use it on PC's, but that's because it's already installed. The constant security issues and bug issues with Adobe products like Reader and Flash have made me try to just ignore that company as much as possible. On the other hand, some PDF's like forms do not work very well in Preview, but I've been able to get around that.
From what I've read, those command key shortcuts are supposed to be toggles and could continue to show pdf documents in one of the formats until you change the setting in the programs preferences. When changed, the documents should continue to show up in whichever view you have chosen.
I found this chart on one of Adobe's support pages.
The following table shows the full-screen keyboard shortcuts.

  • Desktop icons disappear intermittently with Lion 10.7.3

Some of my desktop icons "disappear" intermittently ( not always the same icon(s)).  The title
still appears but the icon is blank. I can still click on the blank spot and the app will launch.
Annoying but not "fatal" - Anyone have any ideas ??
Oh and my personal "Avatar" photo also reverts to an earlier choice ( intermittently ) as well.
Can change it to the one I want to use but it reverts back to the old picture also from time to time ...
Maybe part of the same "problem".

    Hi..
    MIght be corrupted preferences (.plist)
    Go to   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
For Lion v10.7x:  To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Move the com.apple.desktop.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. Restart your Mac.

  • Desktop icons disappear (and don't return) if switch halfway to a new desktop.

If I only swipe halfway to a new desktop (using the trackpad) and then let go to return to the original, my desktop icons disappear. To get them back i have to either killall finder, or switch to another desktop then switch back.

  • Desktop - Icons Disappeared, Can't Right-Click

    Hello,
I installed Leopard about a week ago (installed right over; not fresh install) onto my MacBook Pro, and everything was working fine until yesterday: all the icons on my Desktop (Macintosh HD, various folders and documents) disappeared, and I can't right-click/control-click the Desktop. I can still access the Macintosh HD and other files and folders through Finder, I just can't seem to get them to show up on the Desktop anymore. I'm fairly new to Macs in general, so I don't know if this is a feature that I accidently turned on or is this a bug or..?
Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?
    Regards,
    Derek

I ran into the same thing, did an upgrade on my MBP, a week later my desktop icons disappeared. I ended up downloading the trial version of Cocktail (http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php). Under Ineterface-->Finder-->"Hide the desktop" was checked. I must have accidentally done this but did not know how to undo it. Hope this helps.

  • I just recently installed mountain lion and an update for SMC firmware to install power nap. Everything is working except for the menu bar, the icons native to the system do not respond, and features like the clock and battery meter freeze.

I just recently installed mountain lion and an update for SMC firmware to install power nap. Everything is working except for the menu bar, the icons native to the system do not respond, and features like the clock and battery meter freeze.
When I mouse over the icons, the rainbow appears as if it was processing something. The problem is eliminated when I restart my computer but it comes back after a while.
I guess I cant make a backup copy and restore the whole disk because the copy would be made with this error.
Can anyone help me? Anyone with the same issue?

Update: I was able to test out the HDMI adapter as well and the same issue occured.  I'm stumped.  10.8.1 maybe.

  • Desktop suddenly darkens and menu bar and desktop icons disappear

    Hi guys,
Some times (not very often) suddenly the desktop darkens, and the menu  bar and the disktop icons disappear, while the dock remains. I have to  click in order to return!
    What causes this thing?
P.S. Before awhile, that this happened again, I looked at the console and saw these two events:
    1)**** [IOBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport][SuspendDevice] -- Suspend  -- suspendDeviceCallResult = 0x0000 (kIOReturnSuccess) -- 0x3000 ****
2)setPresentationOptions called with NSApplicationPresentationFullScreen  when there is no visible fullscreen window; this call will be ignored.
But I cannot specify the exact time it happened, in order to see if any of those two messages are related.

Thank you Niel!! Re the problem with the display being too big to fit the screen.  I had exactly the same problem as geraintfromswansea and was completely stymied. Never even thought of Universal Access being at fault. Must have hit the keyboard command somehow to turn on magnification.  Fixed now thanks to you.

  • Menu bar and Dock disappear after exiting Time Machine

Time Machine has worked absolutely fine for almost a week. A few hours ago I clicked the icon on my dock to see how many incremental backups it had made today, and everything seemed fine. However, when I click cancel now and the desktop comes back, the dock completely disappears. The menu bar is about halfway to being functional: The shadow appears, but it does not lighten my desktop picture behind it anymore. All the menus are gone, except for those for Bluetooth, AirPort, the clock, etc. I can still open Finder windows by double-clicking the folders on my desktop, but most -- if not all -- keyboard shortcuts are rendered inoperable. They mostly just produce the default error sound, and control-F2 simply highlights a very small invisible box in the top-left corner of the screen. I can also no longer open any applications, and any applications I already had open I can't select.
The only way out was to force a shutdown, but if I try to use Time Machine in the Finder this problem keeps recurring. (It works perfectly in iPhoto.) Also, now if I try to back up Time Machine hangs while "Preparing". I have spent the last hour trying whatever I could think of and also wailing like a child. Please help!

Just a thought....this is not a problem with my MacBook on which I installed a new version of 10.5.
The problem only manifests itself on my iMac at work which I updated using a Drop-in Leopard DVD.
Do you think this could be the problem? Anyone out there having problems that did a retail 10.5 install?
I just re-installed Leopard from the drop-in DVD and first time I opened Mail and went to Time Machine it seemed to be working....it gave me the starry background and asked me to select items to restore to the Inbox. But then it failed to restore the selected messages and I'm back to where I started with a non-working Time Machine in Mail.

  • Desktop icons disappear when disconnecting LED display

My problem started when I installed snow leopard....now every time i disconnect my laptop from the LED display the icons disappear from the desktop and i have to relaunch finder from the force quit menu. The same happens when i connect my laptop back to the display.
Also the widgets appear out of place and some of them off screen on the laptop
    Any advice?
    Thanks

I had a similar problem when I used my 20 inch monitor, while my 24 was being fixed. When you disconnect it seems to remember where things are in the wrong size, or aspect. Restarting or force quitting applications doesn't help either. You would have to remember to transfer everything over to the MBP display and resize before disconnecting. But some apps that you haven;t run recently would still mess up still mess up.
The way I worked it out was to put the display icon in the menu bar. If things were "off Screen" I would go to the display icon and change the aspect/size. That forces the monitor currently connected to reset, then you can set it back to the resolution you want. I think you only have to do that once, not for every application.
    Hope that works for you!

  • No task bar/menu bar or icons appear when I login into my main account, however this is not a problem with my guest accout

So was trying to use install disk ! to solve the problem but did not want to reinstall the system because I have not backed up many of my photographs.  Then the disk got stuck and would not come out so when I shut down and restarted I could not get past the gray screen.  Well I was able to solve the problem and remove the disk, and finally it would load to the login screen, although it took some time to get there.  Then when I log in to my main account the desktop will load but the task bar and icons will not its completely blank except for the wall paper.  When I login into my guest account there is not a problem everything is there and functional. I've been researching but have had no luck on a solution.  Thank you for your help.

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
