Make a list of all the third-party applications that load an icon in the menu bar. Go through the list and eliminate all of them as suspects.

The top right menu bar freezes, the time reamins frozen and when the mouse is put over it the spinning ball comes on and nothing responds on the menu bar. Shutting down or restart stops at the clear screen and I need to use my power button to shut down and restart?
Any one able to help me?Try opening Activity Monitor from your Utilities folder, make sure all processes are being displayed, and then look for the SystemUIServer server and see if there is a note in red that it is not responding. If so click on it to select, then click the red Quit button at the top of the window and click Force Quit when the dialog box comes up.
If this is the problem you are having problem interactions between SystemUIServer, Spotlight and some other menu bar extra. Remove all menu bar extras (you can hold down the command key, then click and drag off the menu bar). Add back items one at a time until you find the one that is a problem. If you are using StuffIt Deluxe with a menulet, that is ALWAYS a problem. There are others as well (the Classic menulet does mine in).

Hey, I just noticed this today, I'm not sure how long it's been going on though. On my Powerbook G4, certain top menu bar items, all that have to do with OS X, including the TIME, SPOTLIGHT, AIRPORT MONITOR, as well as SOUND CONTROL freeze temporarily. Thus, the time freezes and does not display the correct time. Instead it displays the time at which the freeze occured. When you mouseover any of these items, the rainbow wheel appears. Has anyone had this problem? Possible fix? Thanks a lot!
Hi, Spencer and Inspired, et.al. —
Edit: Inspired's post appeared while I was editing what's below. We clearly agree on potential solutions. Since I've listed a few additional suggestions, I'll post this as a complement to Inspired's excellent response . . .
Some background and a few ideas for you to try —
The items on the right side of the menu bar are called "menu extras," and are managed by a process named SystemUIServer. When the behavior you've described is occurring, you may want to open Activity Monitor and check whether SystemUIServer is "hanging." If so, this may be a temporary situation. Your logs may provide an indication of what's causing the problem (I'd check system.log and console.log first). Please post back if you'd like help doing this.
From various readers' reports and solutions, this kind of problem can be caused by a number of things — including Spotlight activity, corrupted .plist files, incompatible 3rd-party "menu extras," etc.
For now, you may want to try these ideas (one at a time):
(1) Check that it's not simply an issue with Spotlight activity &/or indexing. If it is, waiting a little should do the trick.
(2) Locate these two files, move them to the trash, and restart:
~/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ com.apple.systemuiserver.xxxxxxxxxxxx.plist.
After restarting, these preference files will be regenerated. But please note that you may have to reset all of your preferences involving menu extras — or launch them from the "Menu Extras" folder, as described above.
(3) Identify any 3rd-party "menu extras" you have installed, and disable them — then check to see the impact of this change. If you have unsanity's Application Enhancer system (APE) installed, you may have to use its preference panel and uninstall it.
(4) Try locating and re-enabling menu extras — either from their respective System Preferences or (not all have prefs) from their path: Go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras. All of the menu extras are located here. (SystemUIServer is also located in the CoreServices folder.) Double-click to re-enable any of the menu extras that are currently disabled. Note that, if you make a mistake, you can click on any menu extra and ⌘-drag it to a diffferent location or off the menu bar entirely. You may want to restart (some would say to also repair permissions) after doing this — but I can't confirm this is necessary.
(5) In several situations (that I mention only as a ~"last resort"), users have used Pacifist to extract a "fresh" copy of SystemUIserver from their Install Disc or, e.g., from the 10.4.3 Combo Update Package and replacing the existing copy of SystemUIServer. Note that there are supporting files — so please post back to discuss this if you eventually decide it's warranted.
I hope one of these solutions that have worked for others is helpful.
Please feel free to post back and discuss things further . . .
Good luck!

menu bar on upper right side freezes through to the wi-fi icon. A rolling beachball appears, while the rest of the computer appears functional.
If Topher's suggestion didn't work:
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the grey Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal.

Spry Menu Bar - Freezing the Menu item in hover when clicking a submenu item
Hi,
I am trying to add a feature to a verticle spry menu bar that freezes the menu item or "parent" (to apear to be hovered) when clicking one of the parents sub-menu items. I want to do this so that users can know how they arrived at the page they're on.
Thanks for your help,
-ShivaTo look at your intention in a different way,
Hover over a submenu item
Parent item is colored/indicated
Submenu item is colored/indicated
Click on the submenu item
New page opens
Parent item "remains" colored/indicated on the new page
There are three or four ways to do this, depending on your site setup, but one basic concept to understand. The emphasis on the Parent menu item is totally independent of whether you got to the new page via the menu or by some other means. The emphasis will always be there, though it will appear to be connected to your clicking on the menu!
Say you have a menu with two Parent menu items, flowers and trees.
On the Flowers menu are submenus: Tulips, Roses, and Gardenias, On all three different Flowers pages (Tulips, Roses, Gardenias), the Flowers parent item will be emphasized.
On the Trees menu are submenus: Oak, Maple, Spruce. On all three different Trees pages (Oak, Maple, Spruce), the Trees parent item will be emphasized.
If you want to go in to each page individually, you can use a general indicator like id="localemphasis". (To emphasize more than one thing on a page, use a class instead of an id)
Using this method, on the Tulips, Roses, and Gardenias pages, put id="localemphasis" on the Flowers parent menu item.
On the Oak, Maple, and Spruce pages, put id="localemphasis" on the Trees parent menu item.
To control the emphasis from the CSS stylesheet, you won't need to go into each page, but you will ID each parent menu item.
Give each 'category' (Flowers, Trees) page a body ID to match the category
Every Flower page wants the Flower parent menu item emphasized, give all three Flower pages a body tag like this: <body id="flowers">
LIkewise, every Tree page wants the Tree parent menu item emphasized, as <body id="trees">
Within the menu itself and on ALL pages, give each parent menu item an id to correspond to its category
<li id="flowers_m">Flowers</li>
<li id="trees_m">Trees</li>
I have added a "_m" to remind myself that it is the menu item's id. You might need to put the id on the <a> link if you have not used a list for your menu.
In your CSS stylesheet,
#flowers #flowers_m,
#trees #trees_m {background-color: red; color: white;}
Please use your own code! White on red might not be your cup of tea...use the same styling as the "hover" styling you mention in your query.
To interpret what we have just done, we have said
make the background-color red and the text white
for the parent menu item Flowers (id="flowers_m") when you are on a Flowers page (body id="flowers")
and for the parent item Trees (id="trees_m") when you are on a Trees page (body id="trees").
This emphasis is good feedback for your user...remember that for SEO purposes, you will also want to use actual HTML text to reinforce the page environment, that is, h1 titles like FLOWERS and TREES. That will provide more feedback for your user.

Right side of menu bar freezes after using AirPlay Mirroring
When I use Airplay Mirroring with my MacBook Pro to stream "web only" videos on Hulu (or to stream Amazon Prime videos) onto my Apple TV, afterwards the right side of my menu bar gets the rainbow spinny thing (the "spinning beach ball of death," as my sister calls it)
I can't click on anything, the time and battery status won't move, the only thing I can click on on the right side is the Notifications tab thing and also DropBox. The left side is working fine, I can click on everything and it responds.
My dad fixed it last time it did this, I think he repaired the permissions or something (not sure though, I wasn't there when he did it.) So I know I can fix it, but I was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem/if it's an issue with the software or just my computer. If it's just my computer, I'll tell Apple and ask them to fix it.
ThanksCreate a new user and see if it happens within that user. If it does, reinstall the operating system. This is also known as an Archive and Install. Be sure to back up your data first. If it doesn't, drag the com.apple.finder.plist file to the desktop from the folder [home folder]/Library/Preferences and restart and see if the problem persists. If it goes away, the issue was a corruption in that file. Let me know if you have any questions.

Strange behaviour: menu bar freezes, programm icons incomplete
People,
I dont know what happened to my system.
I had some problems with the entourage database on my mac. Since i was not able to resolve it in any way (ms database utility was starting up and unexpectetdly quit always - if anybody can help here?) i noticed some odd behaviour and i started to delete all microsoft files from my mac.
But now there is still somethin strange going on.
For exemplae when i try to open a programm which has no programm icon yet (eg downloaded from internet) i will get a message that the programm my be damaged.
After that i can do merely nothing on my system!
I still have my finder-menu-bar - but i can not select andything to do for example a restart or to shut down. I also cant do this from other programs. only way is to activate the user switch in the right upper corner, go to the login screen and there (i can log in my user again there) select force restart.
i am absolutely clueless what is going on here!
My system was a leopard clean install and i took great care that everything is neat.
Now i have been sitting ducks here with the whole day start - force restart and so on.
Any ideas?
Thanks,alexanderAlexander Reinelt1 wrote:

Your HD may be failing, for one thing.
Run DU and check both the HD and repair the file permissions.
Windows programs can collect and retransmit viruses and possibly damage some files. There are reports of a few viruses for Macs.
But I suspect it is most likely your HD going South.
If DU does not turn up any errors, post back. -
So I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to a SSD drive. I reinstalled OS and everything, I've noticed that since doing that Final cut pro 7 seems strange. Whenever editing and then clicking on the menu bar it takes up to four seconds for it to respond and drop down. I've tried rebooting, reinstalling "7.0.3" update and I've even verified and repaired the disk permissions. PLEASE someone help. With my standard original hard drive I never had this issue. With both situations my media and everything was on the same hard drive.
System Specs:
OS X: 10.8.3
Proc: 2.3 GHz Core i7
Mem: 8GB
HD: 500 GB Solid State SATA Drive
Thank you in advance!
-TimRan into the same issue here.
dual 2.66 6-core Mac Pro
OS 10.8.3
Did a full base 10.8 install. Ran all updates. Repaired disk perms. Ran the original FCS3 installer. Ran all updates. Repaired disk perms again. Opened FCP and got the same 4-5 second menu bar freeze. Not only the menu bar, but playing clips on the timeline has the same delay.
What I can tell you is that it's related to your specific user perms. Try logging out, logging back in as a different user (create a new one from scratch) and you'll see that FCP works just fine. So, as far as I can tell, the error is related only to the original user account that installed the application.
I didn't have enough time to research this in detail, so I just wiped the original account that installed the app and have migrated over to the new one.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone else about a more elegant solution.

Right part of menu bar and menu bar clock freezes.
Right part of menu bar and menu bar clock freezes after a few minutes works. Happens every single session and seems to not be affected of what programs that are running. There are other anomalities too, which seem to be somehow related, affecting my main software (Finale). Keyboard Maestro and Time Machine are always running in the background. Any ideas?
Nope.
BTW: After restart, it all seems to work. This seems to happen after the MBP has been taking a nap and in all following sessions.
It's a 2 months old MBP, 8 gB RAM, all the newest updates on everything. -
My Menu Bar has gone + Date and Time causes System Preferences to freeze
Hi my ibook has recently lost its menu bar, I have had a search around the forum to see if i can find the answer but i cant. If you reselect items from system preferences such as bluetooth display etc. nothing appears in the menu bar. If i go to the time and date menu just opening it causes sytem prefs to stop responding and you can only force quit out of it. Are the two things related?
I tryed to remove the com.apple.systemmenu file as one of the post on here said to do, but alas nothing. is it gone for ever?
Will i have to reinstall os-x
Many thanks in advance
olly boustead - UKcould this be involved? or does the mac not even get time to place the icon before it freezes.
Yes, it might. I thought I had reproduced this, since I also got "Click the lock to make changes" with no icon, but after a short delay the "open lock" icon appeared and the text changed to "Click the lock to prevent further changes". So maybe this shows there is a problem with the icon file. More on this later.
is this another factor?
Does your login password still work as the keychain password? If so, start Keychain access and choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu.
I doubt this will affect the lock icon, but let us know if the keychain password problem goes away first, then we can look at the other problem. -
Multiple apps freezing on load and/or on accessing the menu bar?
Recently I've been having problems with many of the Apple apps freezing and not responding. This includes Disk Utility, iPhoto, Console, and iMovie just to name a few. Some freeze immediuately on opening like iPhoto, others like Disk Utility and Console open and work fine until I try to click on any of the menu items in the menu bar. When I click on the menu bar the menu box appears but the text is not rendered and the app immediately stops working. The only option is to Force Quit the application but after restarting the app and the computer the problem is exactly the same.
Incidently the Taskbar has also experienced its fair share of beachball activity on nearly every icon to include Time/Date and Spotlight.
- I've rebooted to the recovery partition and performed both a Disk Repair and Permissions Repair.
- Created new user account and experience the same thing.
- Reloaded OSX and problem was gone but returned within a few weeks
The only changes I've made recently was to upgrade the HD to a 3TB Western Digital Caviar Green (essentially the same drive as the factory just bigger). I've also turned on FileVault 2 on my 3TB backup disk.
I do have some homebrew installed applications and libraries due to some course work that I'm doing.
I've plenty of Diagnostic Reports but do not know how to interpret them. Activity Monitor shows the CPU is not overloaded, Memory still has over a Gig free, and Disk Activity is normal.
What are the next steps I can take to determine the cause of the problem? How can I decipher the Diagnostic Reports to determine where the system is dieing?
Thanks

I just recently installed mountain lion and an update for SMC firmware to install power nap. Everything is working except for the menu bar, the icons native to the system do not respond, and features like the clock and battery meter freeze.
When I mouse over the icons, the rainbow appears as if it was processing something. The problem is eliminated when I restart my computer but it comes back after a while.
I guess I cant make a backup copy and restore the whole disk because the copy would be made with this error.
Can anyone help me? Anyone with the same issue?Update: I was able to test out the HDMI adapter as well and the same issue occured. I'm stumped. 10.8.1 maybe.

Window manager, dock freeze, menu bar disappear
Hello,
Almost once a day since I installed Leopard (one week ago), at some point, I can not anymore swap between my apps. When this happen, Exposé doesn't work, Spaces doesn't work, the dock doesn't answer (when I right click to choose or to kill an app, nothing happen). However, I am able to quit the current application. When I do so, the menu bar disappear and the next application does not answer.
Even Command-Option-Escape does not work, so I can not kill anything and I have no choice but to hold the power button until the computer shuts down and then reboot.
This is kind of annoying. I usually have Thunderbird, Firefox, Sunbird and Adium as openned application when this happen... but they are always open, so I can not say if it is because of them.
When I installed Leopard, I checked the option to install fresh, but keep the old system, and it looks like the installator did not really do a fresh install (I have all my previous applications without having installed them).
I'm in the dark and wonder if I will wait for a patch, install Leopard fresh (really this time), or roll back to Tiger...
Please help!I find that a permissions mask is causing the windowmanager to freeze hard to believe, frankly. I'm experiencing this freeze-up problem on Tiger 10.4.11. Not Leopard. I have been seeing the following symptoms prior to a freeze:
1. Progressively slower and slower operations due to very high loads: 3.9 to 4.5.
1.5 switching apps starts to take a long time.
2. I have been using Camino frequently. Prior to using Camino I never had any such issues. It might be related, even if I think it is unrelated.
3. When I go to switch apps with Command-Tab, it just fails--- the windowmanager freezes and thusly no more keyboard input is heard. It seems that the system is still running fine, though, even if the windowmanager is totally frozen. How do I know this? I can hear things happen when I plug in an ethernet cable, for example--- immediate disk activity as the box registers with DHCP. I did not have the option to log into the system remotely to truly demonstrate that this is, in fact, the situation.
This most recent freeze, I command-alt-w'd (close all) windows in the Finder, as it was consuming an inordinate amount of CPU time. Activity Monitor had just reported that "Finder was not responding" I watched as Finder proceeded to close a few windows, and then when I command-tabbed through 4 apps it froze.
I must reboot, in order to resolve the issue, as no activity from console will do anything.
It is possible that I have a corrupted plist, but it will take time to identify the exact cause of this freeze up. What is the bug in Leopard to which you refer, and what are the exact permissions in question? Could that bug, or a similar bug have shipped with Safari 3?
To help resolve the permissions bug you speak of, one could run "find" at the command prompt with the appropriate args to find all files of a certain permission bitmask, but you've left me nothing to work with, only vague information. If you know of the bug, please post the URL to the bug listing here. If you cannot do that, please describe the bug in detail.
Any advice would be appreciated.
have a day.yad

Menu Bar and dock problems - MenuBar won't highlight and Dock freezes
Just started having this problem - but had it with Leopard and not sure what I did to fix it. Suddenly the Magnified Dock is freezing - won't slide along with the mouse pointer. Also the menu bar won't highlight the choices of a drop-down menu...
I've tried restarting many times - no change. I believe I have to trash a preference file - but not sure which one! This is almost like when I had the Logitech software installed - but that's gone and trashed - so that cannot be the cause.
Sometimes the curser remains a separation line instead of moving to a pointer or the hand - there are several things related here I believe.
Thanks for any help - or if you need more info, let me know. This is really annoying and I'd like to restore this soon!
SteveThings are definitely still not right.
The most disturbing thing is Finder not responding ("The application Finder.app can't be opened." with code -10810), and not relaunching when killed from either Force Quite or the Activity Monitor. Also Aperture would simply fail to start (just startup then freeze with 'not responding') and after a couple of freezes it did start up ok.
I did a bunch of 'housekeeping' uninstalls including Adium, which I'd recently installed, and Chrome (as well as a bunch of random apps that I don't use) and it seemed to have only improved stability - it's still screwing up pretty randomly.
I reinstalled Chrome and still seems to be ok (Aperture still starting ok), although I can't really say I trust it as Aperture did fail a couple of times before it started ok (I didn't keep a strict log of exactly what sequence of uninstalls/reinstalls/reboots I carried out), and also iTunes froze as well, although that too has now started ok - I don't use it regularly so I haven't started it since then.
Basically now that everything's running I haven't done much else to experiment.
Doh! Stupidly I've just started iTunes again "just to see" and it's frozen, along with Finder. (*£&$ing ****!!!!!! (This is on the iMac - everything else is still running, and if you're reading this then I was still able to post it from Chrome.)
Something is definitely wrong with my system(s). I guess I'll leave it a week or so and see if an update comes out before I take the Macbook Pro to a Genius bar somewhere for a rant. -
A little while back, I attempted to write files to a disk, and then my computer went to a screen that I remember looking similar to thishttp://i44.tinypic.com/mheyy1.jpg After going in to speak with apple, they tried to reset specific settings and ended up erasing the majority of the files on my computer. After all this, my computer began to function terribly and finder would not respond. I did a software update just now and upon doing so my menu bar at the top of the screen is visible only for a moment before disappearing. When I try to open any application, the icon turns to a TXT icon and will not open. I am unable to do much of anything on my macbook right now. Thanks for your help!
These files were lost two years ago.
That's not consistent with what you wrote in your first message. I can't help you unless I know what's going on. Either you do, or do not, have backups of all the data you want to keep. If you do not, then the first thing you need to do is back up those files. It makes zero sense to do anything else. In order to back up, you'll need either of two things: another Mac, in working order, with a FireWire port and enough space on its internal drive to hold your files; or an external drive, also with enough space.
On the other hand, if you do have backups, or if you simply don't care about any of the data, then the solution to your problem may be quite simple. All you have to do is boot from your installation disc (your profile says you're running Mac OS 10.5), erase your internal drive, reinstall the Mac OS, then restore your data from backup. You will need to be selective in restoring software, because incompatible software may be what caused the issue.
But it's also possible that you have a hardware failure, in which case you can't get your computer working again until it's repaired.
