Menu bar icons - can't remove come and can't add others

I just installed OS X 10.5 on my G-5 and icons appeared normal on the right side of the menu bar. However, when I installed the 8-software updates some of the icons disappeared. For instance the Displays icon disappeared. When I go to system preferences for DISPLAY and check the show icon in menu bar, shorthy after I check the box, it unchecks itself. Same thing with Airport icon, Date and time icon. Also can't remove an icon from the Finder Menu right side using the Command key.

V.K. Problem finally solved. Remember I said that I COULD NOT restart and boot on the installed DVD to do an "Archive and Install" and could not boot on the inserted DVD by holding the "C" key down. Well I happen to have a Power Mac G5 Apple Hardware Test disc. I was reading the instructions for this test disc and it said to restart, hold down the OPTION key, enter Admin password and then select the disc you wanbt to boot on. Well I inserted the OS X-10.5 DVC, restarted manually and held down the OPTION key. It asked me for the Administrators password and next came up the hard drive icon and the installed DVD icon. I selected the DVD and went on to successfully do the Archive and Install of OS X 10.5. Everything looks good and the menu icons in upper right look normal. I will next install the 8 software updated which include OS X 10.5.7. Hope all goes well. Many thanks for your help.

  • MBP Retina: menu bar icons smoothness problem

    Hello everyone,
I recently switched to MBP Retina 2013, this is my first Mac and despite some software problems, I am loving it!
Here's my question/problem: sometimes (did not notice any logic when it happens) my menu bar icons lose their retina smoothness and look bad. Screenshot below shows how it looks. Notifications icon on the right is good, but spotlight and the others very bad, including date & time. Menu bar text items on the left (non icons) look fine.
Does anyone know what's causing this problem and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Hard to troubleshoot if it does it sometimes.
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Menu Bar Icons Disappeared and other issues after Security Update 2006-001

    Hi,
I was really affraid when i've heard about the Safari vulnerability, so I was really happy to see the Security Update 2006-001.
But after installing it, I'm having regrets:
    * mouse speed turned to default settings
    * system preferences crashes when i try to access to Mouse & Keyboard
    * all the menu bar icons disappeared: Bluetooth, Airport, Time, EVEN Spotlight
    * Finder is slower...
I've repaired disk permissions but: nothing happens....
    What should I do please?
    Should I wait?

How did you fix it? I'm having the same problem
    myself.
    Mandy,
I'm gonna tell you a secret, just like i said my problem wasn't due to the Security Update but because of Front Row.
How? Because, I've hacked my iMac (without iSight) to install FrontRow (with an update), and i've installed the Security Update at the same time. Restarted my computer, and thought the problem was due to the Security Update.
If you did the same thing, here's the trick to remove Front Row:
    Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app)
Install/reinstall the the latest Mac OS X Update Combo.
This article assumes you haven’t tried installing Front Row before without the use of Enabler. If you have used one of the very early versions of Front Row (ones installed without Enabler):
    Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app)
    Delete the preference file (/System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.frontrow.plist)
Remove any Login Items that launch Front Row (System Preferences >Accounts >User >Login Items)
Disable any shortcuts managed by third-party applications that launched Front Row.
    Reboot and reinstall.

  • I can no longer rearrange menu bar icons..... Please help!

Only the apple native icons (airport, BT, battery, etc) will allow to be arranged when I hold down the apple command key and drag. Previously, I could move norton AV, Weatherpop, etc. Is there a prefs file that I need to trash and rebuild or a 3rd party application that needs to be reinstalled in order for all of my menu bar icons to allow to be rearranged?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Because of the problems between Spotlight, SystemUIServer and menu bar extras I had to minimize the number I run, so I just use wClock, Scripts and Input menus. Since wClock is third party it can't be moved, I want it next to the Spotlight icon, then the Scripts menu and then the Input menu. The only way I found to get this to happen was remove everything, then turn on wClock, restart, then add the Apple ones. However, with depressing regularity after a shutdown the next restart would have them rearranged. I discovered that when that happened I could launch Activity Monitor and use it to force quit SystemUIServer, whereupon the arrangement would go back to what it had been. I would guess about 1 in 3 restarts it does not display in the order I had at shutdown.
    Francine
PS--I noticed in another post you have APE installed. Since you aren't using any of Unsanity's haxies I would uninstall it. The balance of menu extras is chancy enough as it is, the fewer things messing about with SystemUISever, the better.

  • Menu bar icons vanished and iPod not showing up in iTunes anymore

All menu bar icons on the right side (keyboard, clock, battery) vanished.
It's not possible to get them back by mark their visability in the system configuration. The system just ignores any attempt to do that (I can mark the check box, but nothing appears on the menu bar; after leaving and returning to the panel, the mark has gone).
Besides of that, my iPod doesn't show up in iTunes anymore (but does on the desktop).
My laptop may be physically damaged as it fell down to the floor a few days ago.
    Can anybody help?

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test and also Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger, on the Menubar at the top of the screen.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
8.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
9.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
10.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number.
Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.

  • Why can't I organize third party menu bar icons?

Is there a way I can organize third party menu bar icons? I know I can organize preinstalled Apple icons such as the battery indicator and time/date, but how do I order third party menu bar icons so that when I restart, they will stay in that order?

    Great question.
And a related one: is there a utility to organize these? I have a ton and it would be cool to have a show/hide toggle or something.

If that still doesn't work then see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf
(caution: do not delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox program installation folder)
    Note:
Deleting the file [http://kb.mozillazine.org/localstore.rdf localstore.rdf] will reset the customizations of the toolbars to the defaults.
You can rename ''localstore.rdf'' to '''localstore.rdf.sav''' to test if that solves it.
Then you can restore the customization by copying ''localstore.rdf.sav'' to ''localstore.rdf'' if it didn't work.

Do you mean the Bookmarks Menu button on the Navigation Toolbar?
You only see that button if the menu bar is hidden.

  • Menu bar icons keep moving/scrolling/flashing

Not sure exactly how to describe the problem concisely.  The menu bar icons appear, then disappear, and then only two icons reappear (OpenDNS and VirusBarrier), then they disappear and the sequence starts again.
Computer is a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard and is up to date.  Thinking that it might be simply that I had too many icons for the real estate on my smallish monitor, I tried removing menu icons to make room by unticking their boxes in some of their system preferences and also be dragging them off the menu bar with command-drag, but problem will not go away. Rebooting did not solve the problem either. I have also repaired permissions.  Any suggestions are welcome.

    Corrupted .plist file.
Get yourself OnyX for OS X, it will come in handy for that and other things that go bump in the night.

  • Menu Bar icons disappearing

My menu bar icons for volume, date and time, ect. All disappeared randomly and I don't know why. I went into my system preferences to try to re add them and when I click the box to put it back, it just deselects automatically and won't let me re-add them. I also can't open finder. It says the application isn't responding. I've restarted. I've gone through the disk utility stuff. I'm at my wits end on how to deal with this. Suggestions/info?
    Thanks!

I too am at a loss for lack of details - especially about the 'refusal' to obey in the Prefs.
One thing that springs to mind concerning the menu bar 'icon' items - in some apps, the App's menu has a LOT of menu headings. In the case where it needs the room, it will push some out of the way (somehow) - an example is BBEdit
    BBEdit removes these

  • Menu bar icons / clock (all but spotlight) are missing from menu bar

I started woke my MacBook up from sleeping for a few days this morning and everything ordinarily on the right side of the menu bar save the spotlight menu has disappeared.
I used to have a displays icon/menu, battery icon, network icon/menu, and clock displayed on the right side of the menu bar and they are now gone. If I go into the control panels for display, time, etc., to re-enable the menu bar icons, I can check the check box to display icon in menu bar, but the settings won't save! (Whenever I go back into the settings panel after making the change, the changes are reverted!)
Its getting pretty frustrating. Anyone have any ideas please?

    Hello OCMacMerlin
If the OnyX Rebuild services didn't or won't fix it, then have a look at the following:

  • Menu bar icons won't display

After upgrading to Mavericks, I can't see any of the usual menu bar icons (date/time, battery, wifi, etc.).
When I check them in System Preferences, it momentarily checks and then unchecks.
    Any suggestions? Tried restarting already.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and delete that file. Log out and back in or restart.

  • How to eliminate unwanted menu bar icons?

When I installed all the software for my new Canon MP640 printer-copier-scanner it put a "Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector" icon in the menu bar. It doesn't seem to do much - and I really don't want another nanometer of space taken-up by unwanted menubar icons... Does anyone know how to remove this?
    Thanks!

OK the cmd-drag didn't work - I had tried that but appreciate the suggestion!
As to your suggestion: In Accounts I find a Login program called *Canon IJ Network Scanner* (checked to be hidden) - and it is in /Library/Printers/Canon/IJScanner/Utilities/Canon IJNetwork Scanner Selection. OK but if I remove this from the login - will it remove just the menu bar icon or will I then lose the ability to use my MP640 as a scanner?
When I open the program by double-clicking it, I get the same screen as when I choose it from the menu bar. I just don't want this menubar "icon" taking up real estate --
The HELP says this: (The icon itself does not show in this paste so I just put in underlines__- it is the image of a printer with the top opened and an arrow indicating a scan direction or something.
    About Menu
Click__in the menu bar to display the menu.
Scan the images using the operation panel of the scanner
You can select or deselect this option. Select this option to receive images from the scanners selected in the settings screen. Deselect this option to not to receive images from the scanners.
    Note
When Scan the images using the operation panel of the scanner is not selected, the icon appears gray (__ ).
About Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector
