Menu bar invisible

I have been troubleshooting a problem now for months.
When I bring up iTunes (64-bit) the menu bar is invisible.  If I hover over the area I can select the items.
I also cannot type anything in the search/find box (while in "Music")
I have tried bring up the PC in Safe mode to eliminate my video card, but it doesn't change anything.

When I bring up iTunes (64-bit) the menu bar is invisible.  If I hover over the area I can select the items.
I also cannot type anything in the search/find box (while in "Music")
The missing menus at the top of iTunes (in recent versions) can indicate trouble with the Segoe UI fonts on your system. It's a new symptom of a problem that can also cause text to go missing from the Device tab in iTunes.
Unfortunately it's a bit trickier to deal with on Windows 7 systems than Vista or XP. (The "Vortical" instructions which can fix it for almost all folks on Vista and XP aren't applicable to Windows 7.)
Try having a look through the following (unfortunately very long) topic. It contains a lot of information on the Windows 7 variants of this, and possible methods for fixing the various Segoe UI-related issues that might be in play:

  • Mac mini and 52" TV monitor -- menu bars invisible

Last summer I bought a mac mini for my Samsung 22" TV/DVI monitor. The mini immediately recognized the TV as a specific DVI monitor and all was well.
The only problem was the monitor was smaller than my iMac screen. A bigger TV was inevitable. We eventually moved, and the idea of using binoculars to watch TV held little appeal, so I bought a 52" Samsung.
I bought a DVI to HDMI cable, as this TV had no DVI input (unlike the 22" combo TV/DVI monitor) and the mini recognizes it generically as "Samsung" and chooses "1080p" for the monitor resolution. (I assume this is preferred to 1080i, even though the refresh rate is slower?).
I want to use this both as a "Front Row" interface for iTunes movies, etc, and as a conventional monitor for when I want to do computery things.
The menu bar (as well as the bottom of the dock) are invisible. They are there when I remotely display the screen, so I think they might just be hidden by the frame. Is there a viable workaround? Of the 15 or so possible resolutions, exactly one shows the menu bar, but at the expense of lower resolution and terrible color balance (oddly, if I rotate the image 180° in Display System Preferences, the color looks ok).
Also, while I am at it, what is the optimal way to export audio from the mac mini into a stereo input? Right now I am using the headphone jack, and it sounds ok, but I suspect there might be a much better way.

I've been having this same problem! My Mini plugged into my 42" HDTV (via DVI to HDMI adapter, with Overscan enabled) has the desktop overflowing the screen on all four sides. With Overscan disabled, the desktop is too small and has a black band on all four sides.
Now, I know the Nvidia GPU can scale/stretch the display for external displays, I had to do it with my Vista laptop. So, how do I do the same thing on my Mini?
I've called tech support, but I had no luck. The first guy would only say 'You can't do anything else.' and hung up when I asked for someone else. The second guy didn't even understand the issue.

  • Menu Bar invisible - File-Edit-View-Window

When using Adobe Acrobat Pro X, The menu bar is no longer visible.  Any suggestions on how to get it to appear again?  I've tried doing "reset toolbars to default" and that did not work

Try running repair from the Add/Remove Control panel if the F9 key is not working or the menu item reset toolbar is not working.

  • Icons in menu bar and standard menus are invisible!

    I'm having an issue with OS X 10.8.2 on my 15" (not Retina) Macbook Pro (late 2011, Core i7 2.4 GHz w/ 16GB RAM and SSD);
The majority of system icons in the menu bar "extras" area (that is, to the right near the date/time in the menu bar) are blank. The area where the icon would be located is responsive to clicks, and drops a menu item down upon click, but the icons themselves are invisible. The same goes for Spotlight which has a spot for it's icon and responds to the hotkey of Apple + Spacebar, but the icon itself is invisible. The only icons that are visible are third party programs that run and place themselves there such as Little Snitch, and the battery low ("red" battery) indicator icon; other battery icons are invisible.
Also invisible/blank are the icons for going back and forward in a Finder window as well as the back/forward icons in System Preferences sub-dialogs. The icons for choosing labels, changing the way Finder windows display (their view options), and a few others that I cannot name as I cannot see them are invisible as well. Icons that would normally display to the left of "All My Files", "AirDrop", "Applications", "Desktop", et cetera in the Finder window do not display, either.
I have tried installing the 10.8.2 Combo Update and using the Disk Utility "Repair" and "Verify" Filesystem options but neither fixed the issue. I have tried deleting the cached plist files for the SystemUIServer as well but there was no change in the icon display (or, that is, lack of display!).
I am running Mac OS X 10.8.2 (including the Combined Update) on the late-2011 Macbook Pro 15" w/ 2.4 GHz Core i7 (default 4GB memory and 750gb HDD; upgraded to 16GB of RAM and a Crucial M4 256GB SSD). I cannot recall if the problem started after I updated any system software or not; I upgraded to 10.8.2 via buying OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store so that I would have a copy on USB to install after replacing my HDD with my SSD. Everything worked fine on fresh installation, and I am not sure at what point the icons disappeared.
Does anyone have any insight into this problem, and more importantly, how to correct it? Please see the screenshots below for a proper illustration of the problem I am experiencing. The sole icon visible, with the two columns, is Little Snitch 3.0.
^-- Clicking the menu bar battery icon (except, there is no icon!)
^-- Finder window with the icons for back/forward, view options, icons for location list items on the left, etc. missing
^-- System Preferences dialog, with icons for the back/forward function missing.
^-- Help window with the icons for back/forward and some other function missing.
    Thank you in advance!

I have a similar issue. When the computer goes into "Hibernate" mode -- that is, it loses power while sleeping and it writes the contents of it's memory to disk in order to boot into that exact configuration when woken up -- many of my icons when Apple-Tab'ing to another application appear as static. They look like a slightly colorized version of the "static snow" you see when tuning into a station that doesn't exist on a UHF antenna television. Also, icons in Chrome such as web sites "favorite icons" or favicon.ico (the icons that appear in the URL bar and bookmarks) will be scrambled in the same fashion , at first , until the actual icon is loaded.
Between this, my menu bar and finder icons not displaying, and being unable to boot into safe mode, I'm getting quite ******. I have no idea what the **** is going on with my Macbook Pro. The issue of the scrambled icons actually existed prior to installing an SSD and doing a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I may end up throwing in the towl and re-installing the operating system but I'm sure SOMETHING will happen. It seems the latest update, 10.8.2, is absolute garbage.
What the ****, Apple? And I really don't want to take the computer to the morons at the Apple Store. They are not "geniuses" by any measure.

  • Menu Bar items invisible in Safari full screen mode

I have a brand new MacBook Pro 13" Retina, mid-2014 (the MGX72). When I use Safari in full screen mode, then move the cursor to the very top of the screen, which is supposed to bring back the Menu bar, a blank space representing the Menu Bar appears, and if I move the cursor to any place on that blank space and click, I see the items/options associated with Menu Bar items. So it's like the Menu Bar items are there, but they're invisible. This has to be a glitch of some type. My MacBook Air doesn't do this; the Menu Bar items appear normally, as they should. Is there a fix for this? All the usual suspects for bringing Safari out of full screen mode work fine, but that's not the idea. The Menu Bar items are supposed to become visible and they do not.

No, dont return it, its a glitch in Safari, and VERY annoying. I first would have to Force Quit Safari, but later learned to keep hovering the mouse in the upper right corner, even tho nothing, yeah nothing,,,,is visible.
Keep the mouse there, and after a bit, you will see the little arrows pointing in, hit them.
But to keep this from happening again, Im not sure.
So anybody with further info, please post it here.

After installing iTunes 10.4.0.80 "file" "edit" etc items from menu bar at top right corner disappeared -when cursor is put in that spot a darker rectangle appears - similarly tabs for syncing iPhone are invisible- and similarly small ovals appear when cursor is placed where tabs should be.

Very many thanks to you, Putaro!  Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!

  • My menu bars go invisible and wont work, Help please?

Ok, the problem is that the menu bar on the top of the screen, you know where it says "file" "Edit" "Image" etc. will not work. When I click on "file" the window that opens basically becomes see through and I'm not able to click on anything like "save". My main concern is my Photoshop as I have work to do in it, but the same thing happens with my Adobe Audition, Reader, and basically every other Adobe program. I'm really in a pickle here as I have to turn in 2 canvases by the end of today. Can someone please me fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a popssible display driver and/or resource problem.
What version of Photoshop are you running?
What operating system and video card do you have?
Have you rebooted, and does the problem recur after?
Is this issue reproducible or intermmittent?
Do you have any 3rd party plug-ins installed?

  • Please help. The Finder has crashed I guess, no icons on the desktop, menu bar and dock flicking. Can't open any app, folder or even do a right click.

Good day, I could really need some information. Thank you in advance.
    I have a 2008 24" iMac, running on 10.5.8.
I want to describe the whole issue. The only thing that changed in my routine and made it crash was that I bought a new Apple keyboard, with a wire this time, before I was using a bluetooth one, and a new wireless Logitech mouse. After I successfuly connected both, while browsing in Safari, the computer totally lagged. All I could do was to manually restart it. When I started it again, it said that the "ruby" application has quited unnexpectedly. After clicking ignore, I observed that the icons on desktop haven't loaded, the menu bar is constantly reopening itself, I can't right click, if I try to open Sistem Preferences that is as far as it will allow me to go, if I click anything else than, it closes system Pref. and leaves me again with this flicking menu bar, which of course I can't even click and an empty desktop. I couldn't see if the problem is only related to my user, as there is only 1 user on it. I tried to create a new one, but I get the problem mentioned above.
I try to see here on the forum if other people have had the same problem, but what I got was minor cases, they can still use finder or an app, everytime I open something, it dies and I only can restart the poor thing
I hope I don't have to delete all my info on my drive, that would be a big problem for me.
    Solutions, recommendations?
    Thank you.

    Hi Paul,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • How do I change the color of the triangle in a menu bar?

    Hi,
I have a question that might seem very rudimentary...How can I change the color of the little downward-pointing triangle on my menu bar items that have sub-menus? Specifically, I want those triangles to be invisible when the cursor is not over the menu bar. Right now it is black and changes to white. I'm running Dreamweaver CS5 on a Mac if that makes any difference. Is there a CSS rule for this somewhere that I am not seeing?
    Many thanks for any help!

Those are images, so you will need to change the image.

  • Menu bar and Dock disappear after exiting Time Machine

Time Machine has worked absolutely fine for almost a week. A few hours ago I clicked the icon on my dock to see how many incremental backups it had made today, and everything seemed fine. However, when I click cancel now and the desktop comes back, the dock completely disappears. The menu bar is about halfway to being functional: The shadow appears, but it does not lighten my desktop picture behind it anymore. All the menus are gone, except for those for Bluetooth, AirPort, the clock, etc. I can still open Finder windows by double-clicking the folders on my desktop, but most -- if not all -- keyboard shortcuts are rendered inoperable. They mostly just produce the default error sound, and control-F2 simply highlights a very small invisible box in the top-left corner of the screen. I can also no longer open any applications, and any applications I already had open I can't select.
The only way out was to force a shutdown, but if I try to use Time Machine in the Finder this problem keeps recurring. (It works perfectly in iPhoto.) Also, now if I try to back up Time Machine hangs while "Preparing". I have spent the last hour trying whatever I could think of and also wailing like a child. Please help!

Just a thought....this is not a problem with my MacBook on which I installed a new version of 10.5.
The problem only manifests itself on my iMac at work which I updated using a Drop-in Leopard DVD.
Do you think this could be the problem? Anyone out there having problems that did a retail 10.5 install?
I just re-installed Leopard from the drop-in DVD and first time I opened Mail and went to Time Machine it seemed to be working....it gave me the starry background and asked me to select items to restore to the Inbox. But then it failed to restore the selected messages and I'm back to where I started with a non-working Time Machine in Mail.

  • Trouble with Spry Menu Bar Not Opening on Hover

I have two Spry Menu Bars on this one page. They were both working fine. Now the menu bar on the top right is not opening on rollover. I have uploaded the Spry .JS and .CSSfiles to the server.Could it be that I added 2 to the names of the CSS styles, but not all of them? I just tested them all with 2 after the style name, and it didn't fix it.
I also noticed that the ability to edit these two navigation bars using the Property Inspector went away. I can't seem to click on them to edit. Now I edit them through the code only.
Rebuild it on another page, and paste in the code?
    Suggestions?
ALso, getting an error message on line 2 of HTML below, which I don't remember editing.
I will paste the template page HTML, then the CSS, then the Javascript Spry file for Menu Bar Horizontal. I did not edit the JS file at all.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    SpryMenuBar.js
This file handles the JavaScript for Spry Menu Bar.  You should have no need
to edit this file.  Some highlights of the MenuBar object is that timers are
used to keep submenus from showing up until the user has hovered over the parent
menu item for some time, as well as a timer for when they leave a submenu to keep
showing that submenu until the timer fires.

It has to do with all of your absolutely positioned elements.  What's happening is that the menu is falling behind the absolutely positioned elements on your page.  Since there is nothing there, it's like trying to click a link that is outside your home while you are staring through a window.  Personally with that page setup you have now I really don't see a need for absolutely positioned elements.  But if you feel you will require them as part of your design you need to ensure the z-index of your menu layer is greater than that of the body elements positioned below it.

  • Menu bar and hard drive icon don't appear at last stage of boot up

Machine froze trying to print a PDF document off a flash drive in Preview.  Had to power off the machine.  Upon restart, everything came back to life fine until the very end of the boot up process (chime fine, desktop background pictures appeared, main side tool bar program icons fine) when the top Menu title bar didn't appear nor the hard disk icon.  Spinning beach ball.  Never would finish the boot up process; seemed like it was still trying to finish the print job from before.
Unplugged the networked Laserjet printer, unplugged computer power, restarted.  Same result.  Everything is perfect for 98% of the boot process until the end.  Ran Disk Utility "verify disk" and it found a couple of items.  Repaired successfully.  Ran "verify permissions" and found quite a few wrong.  Repaired successfully.  Still same problem.
Any ideas?  I hate to reinstall the OS with it so close to being just fine.  Machine has been very solid and stable in the current configuration.  I do have a 2nd internal hard drive that has 10.3.9 on it that I can use in a pinch.
Power Mac G4 silver tower, Dual 1ghz, 2GB RAM, 10.4.11 with OS 9.2.2

While in Safe Mode, try this...
In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).
    Reboot & test.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

  • Menu bar won't display date

Yes, I have checked the 'diplay date and time in menu bar'option in system preferences; the time is there, but I really need the date as well. When I click on the time in the menu bar, I can see the date, but it's gray, as if it were inoperative.
Also, as long as you're reading, maybe you could suggest how I can change the preferences in mail to check spelling as I type; this is also gray...
    Thanks!

    Mike
How long has this method been available? is it a Tiger feature or has it been there all alongThis method was available in Panther although it was trickier to get right using the GUI. There was a different method in Jaguar and earlier, which used different format strings.
My finder modification dates have gone haywire after doing the menu date change.Where exactly are you viewing these dates?
I still have the problem after deleting the system prefs plist.I think Scott gave you the wrong preference list. These formats are stored in an invisible preference file: "~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist " (that's the one in your Home Library folder). But there are four formats. The Menu Bar Clock uses the second one, you may have inadvertently changed one of the others.
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window followed by a return:
defaults read -g AppleICUTimeFormatStringsCopy and paste the result from the Terminal window to a post here. For reference, this is what I get:
    <pre>{
    1 = "h':'mm' 'a";
    2 = "d MMM, h':'mm':'ss' 'a";
    3 = "h':'mm':'ss' 'a z";
    4 = "h':'mm':'ss' 'a z";
}</pre>where you can see the second format is modified to have the date as well as the time. If any of #1, #3 or #4 differ from mine, I can give you a command to set it right.
You can find more detail in this User Tip: Date and Time in the Menu Bar (10.3, 10.4) and if you are interested in how things have changed, this is the equivalent for 10.2 and 10.1: Date and Time in the Menu Bar (10.2).

  • How to stylize a menu bar like the one in Kevin's Koffe Kart's footer?

I've been tweaking for a while but I can't achieve this look http://imgur.com/VkInM
It's easy getting rid of the background or coloring it.
But It looks like the menu has a visible white line on the right of each menu item to achieve that nice "line separator" look.
    Ideas and tips are welcome.

    Hello Seruhio,
all this person has done is create an image in Photoshop with everything you see in the menu bar. (It's just a jpg image - see below).  Then all he has done in Muse, is place small rectangles over each "text item"  and giving each box a transparancy of 1%.  Now he just "hyperlinks" these (?invisible?) boxes to the appropriate page on his site.

In TRANSACTIONS a menu in the menu bar, and ACCOUNTS is the menu again and PURCHASE ,SALES are items.
like this any number of submenus we can create for menu bar. But how enable or disable these items.
