Menu bar mayhem after upgrade to 10.6

I have just gone from 10.5.8 to 10.6.4 via the upgrade path.
General OS and Application behaviors are A-OK.
All software updates installed OK but a problem persists.
The menu bar at the top of the screen is all wacked out.
Spotlight icon appears and disappears, spotlight not working.
AirPort icon will not appear.
Smart Reporter icon remains visible and is working.
DropBox icon remains visible and is working.
iStat Menus are invisible but working !! ??
System Preferences crashes when I attempt to turn on or off any Menu Bar items.
Thank you in advance for any and all help.

Apple does not provide a method to add status menu items, so all the ones you have there are a hack in some way. They will often break when an update happens because there is no "correct" way to write them.
Actually, adding third party *status items* to the menubar is supported. It is third party *menu extras* that are not. They look the same but the difference is that all status items always appear to the left of all menu extras & unlike menu extras cannot be rearranged or removed from the menu bar by command clicking & dragging them.
Third party menu extras always require some sort of hack (modification) of the OS & can compromise its security or stability (because they run in system space), while status items run in user space so at worst they can affect a user but not the entire system.
However, either one can cause problems if they are not up-to-date and compatible with Snow Leopard.

  • Displays Menu Not Functioning After Upgrade

Hey, i use another monitor with my macbook so i have the display drop down menu in the menu bar, but since upgrading to 10.5.3 the menu doesnt seem to work?
It still drops down but i can not change the options directly from it, so i have to go into settings/displays to change the resolution/mirroring ect ect?

Find the file /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and move it to your desktop.
Then immediately log out and log in again.
Your menu bar will reset to defaults, and the problem will be fixed.
    Good luck!

  • No menu bar, Dashboard after 10.4.11 upgrade on G3 iMac

I'm not a Mac expert, so bear with me here. I installed the 10.4.11 upgrade on my wife's iMac DV G3 (i.e. the most important machine in the house). During the installation, I got a popup stating that my startup disk was nearly full and that I should (not must, but should) delete some files. I clicked through the popup and the completed the installation. After that the machine rebooted and I got to a blue background screen but no Dashboard or menu bar at the top of the screen.
I rebooted in safe mode (power on w/shift key) and got to a login window, logged in, and got to the same blue background screen.
Q - What are my other options here? I seem to have no access into the machine, though it seems to be booted and not dead.
    Please help.
    tcpasley

I still have the original problem of No top menu, No dashboard, No desktop Icons after login. I still see coreservicesd crashed in /var/logs/system.log.
    Here's what I've done:
Booted from Install DVD, repaired Disk and Permissions repeatedly - no problems here; no repairs done after the first pass through (and only permissions needed repair then).
From a bash terminal: checked /var/logs/system.log. Found the coreservicesd crash. Also see that lookupd exits abnormally.
As per an Apple Tiger support page (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464), followed the instructions for "You see an empty, blue screen" and renamed some plist files and directories. Got repeatable performance in that I could always log in but would only get a desktop background w/o menu/Dashboard/icons.
Booted to OS9 and copied the 10.4.11 COMBO package file to the Macintosh Hard Drive, rebooted with the Tiger install DVD, opened a bash terminal and installed the 10.4.11 COMBO package as per http://net3x.blogspot.com/2007/03/macos-x-1049-update-killed-my-mac.html. No problems encountered with the installation.
Unplugged the machine for ~10 min at some point here. This apparently reset the clock, which I set via the date command.
Rebooted in Safe Mode. Actually got Dashboard and the Time and Finder magnifying glass portion of the top menu (upper right corner) to appear. Clicked on the Finder in Dashboard and got the "infinite spinning beachball" hang. Rebooted in Safe Mode and then got the featureless desktop background again. I haven't checked logs of the one semi-successful startup yet.
So - installing the 10.4.11 COMBO package DID NOT fix the problem.
I also find that networking is not being configured. This could be due the the renamed preferences files and directories.
What should I try next, short of CraigsList for a new/old machine?
    Please help,

  • Right side of menu bar hidden after 2nd monitor disconnect

Hello, When I disconnect my 30" external monitor from my MacBook Pro, the far right side of my menu bar disappears -- the part with the clock and battery information, bluetooth menu and various other little doodads. How do I get the menu back?
Also, is there anyway to keep this from happening?
When the monitor is attached, I have it set up so the menu bar goes on the monitor, as well as the Dock.
The Dock resizes perfectly when I disconnect the external monitor. It's just the menu bar that's screwy.
    I'm running an up-to-date version of OS X 10.5.2.

This is how Apple's marketing materials describe the process of hooking up an external monitor to a MacBook Pro:
"Connect an Apple Cinema Display to expand your desktop and lose nothing in translation."
This is false advertising. You lose your clock, WiFi menu, Time Machine menu, Spotlight and more in the translation.
This is a very real bug.

  • Menu Bar disappears after quitting applications

I just got my 2012 Mac Mini 2.3 i7 + Fusion Drive. Installed a few standard applications (Office, VLC, Chrome, Handbrake, Transmission, AppCleaner). Everytime I quit an application my menu bar disappears as well. A simple key press or click on the screen brings back the Menu Bar, but it shouldn't be disappearing.
I know I'm not enabling Full Screen mode unless someone is aware of a "behind the scenes" workaround.
Anyone have anymore luck with this?
    Thanks in advance

So interestingly enough, I may have solved this by adding my 2nd monitor. I was seeing the issue when using an HDMI -> Mini DisplayPort cable and a single monitor. I just got an identical 2nd monitor about 30 min. ago (thanks UPS guy!) and hooked that one up via HDMI -> HDMI. Now the menu bar is always there.
I wonder if this has to do with something related to the Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt?

  • Right side of menu bar freezes after using AirPlay Mirroring

When I use Airplay Mirroring with my MacBook Pro to stream "web only" videos on Hulu (or to stream Amazon Prime videos) onto my Apple TV, afterwards the right side of my menu bar gets the rainbow spinny thing (the "spinning beach ball of death," as my sister calls it)
I can't click on anything, the time and battery status won't move, the only thing I can click on on the right side is the Notifications tab thing and also DropBox. The left side is working fine, I can click on everything and it responds.
My dad fixed it last time it did this, I think he repaired the permissions or something (not sure though, I wasn't there when he did it.) So I know I can fix it, but I was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem/if it's an issue with the software or just my computer. If it's just my computer, I'll tell Apple and ask them to fix it.
    Thanks

Create a new user and see if it happens within that user. If it does, reinstall the operating system. This is also known as an Archive and Install. Be sure to back up your data first. If it doesn't, drag the com.apple.finder.plist file to the desktop from the folder [home folder]/Library/Preferences and restart and see if the problem persists. If it goes away, the issue was a corruption in that file. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Menu Bar moves after upload ?!@

ok i've no idea what on earth is going on here so i hope someone can explain.
Ive made my site in iweb.
ive created a menu bar at the top rather than use the one provided. it reads like the following
HOME - About us - Crew - Media - Links
ive uploaded my site via cyberduck. When i open the site to look at it in safari the word Links has moved down like a new paragraph below where it says Home.
However when i open the same page from my site in firefox, its totally fine and isnt all over the place,
    *** is going on?
Ive also asked a friend to open one of the pages and he too see's the problem on his pc using internet explorer and it does the exact same thing.

Did you use Web Safe Fonts for the navbar? Do you have Safari set to display a minimum sized font in it's Appearances preference pane that might be larger than the font you used in iWeb?

  • How to get the menu bar back after turned off all toolbars from the "View" menu

Do this: turn OFF all toolbar view from the view menu, with the Menu toolbar the last one.
Problem: cannot find any UI to turn it back, stuck with a bare window, except the tab list.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== turn OFF all toolbar view from the view menu, with the Menu toolbar the last one.

Press the Alt key, this temporarily brings up the menu bar. You an then use the View menu to re-select the menu bar.

  • Bluetooth icon in menu bar vanished after 10.4.4 update

Like the subject says, in short, the bluetooth icon on the menu bar (or whatever idiom is used for it) vanished. I'm using a 12" 1.33 GHz iBook, just updated to 10.4.4. I know for a fact it's just the icon, and nothing's broken with bluetooth, because I can still activate it from the preferences panel. Any ideas?

I have turned on all of my menu bar items (AirPost, Bluetooth, Displays etc.). Sometimes I do find that a few disappear, though they either disapperar entirely, or just leave a blank space where they were. In the latter, I just have to click on the space and it reappears. However, in the former case it is a matter of going into System Preferences and deselecting/selecting "Show Bluetooth Status In Menu bar".
    Hope that fixes it

  • 7.01 to 7.3 Upgrade - Masthead - Yellow/Brown bars occuring after upgrade

    Hi
We have upgrade our ABAP and JAVA stacks from NW 7.01 to NW 7.3.
The upgrade has had a little impact on the portal. In the portal masthead have we got two yellow or brown bars. A bar left of the Design bar and a bar between the Design Bar and the Welcome Area.
The width of these bars depends varies depending on the width of the Welcome Area (user first and sur name) and the screen resolution (off course the width of the Design Bar - however it has a fixed width).
The bars are not visible if the user has a long name and a small screen resolution.
The issue can be seen here: http://www.filefactory.com/file/c26db0d/n/Yellow_Brown_Bar_Issue.jpg#
    Hope somebody can help.

  • Menu Position Changed after upgrade from Forms 10 to 11

    Hi,
I have upgraded an application from Forms 10 to 11g. Everything is ok apart from the position of the menus.
In Forms 10 the menus are attached to the window they relate to e.g. a pop up form has the menu (normally default&smartbar) displaying at the top of the pop up window but on the 11g version the same menu is displayed at the top of the screen looking like it is attached to the MDI window.
Is there any way of restoring the original functionality in 11g please.
    Thanks,
    Jim.

It sounds like this has nothing to do with the version, but rather your configuration. To attach the menu to the form window, set useSDI=yes. To attach it to the MDI window, set useSDI=no or leave it unset. This parameter can be set in formsweb.cfg or in the url used to run the form. For example:
    http://server/forms/frmservlet?form=myForm&otherparams=useSDI=yes
Note that useSDI is a Forms runtime parameter and not an applet parameter, so it is set through "otherparams".

  • Odd Menu Bar Labels After Time Machine Restore

I just got my new MBPR 13" and tried to restore it from a Time Machine Backup during the initial setup process. This proceeded in about a minute (I have 450GB used on my old computer) then told me it was "done" and booted up. The machine was empty, so I attempted to launch Migration Assistant, which initially loaded and asked me to select a backup, but then immediately crashed and subsequently refused to load despite several restarts. I finally booted into the Recovery Partition and restored from a Time Machine Backup from there which seemed to work great, and took a much more reasonable 2 hours to copy all files. Everything looks fine in terms of files, but the OS is exhibiting some odd behaviors. For instance, when I click on the WiFi logo, instead of an "On" label it has a button labeled "kAirportStatusOnKey" with all buttons labeled similarly. My Time Machine HDD (named James' HDD) also showed up with an odd name in the Time Machine menu item. These are the things I have noticed, but I doubt they are isolated. Anyone seen this before, or have an idea about what might have happened and how to fix it?
    Thanks guys,
    James

Do you have any software that custom installs something on the menubar?  Many such programs do not carry their compatibility through every operating system update and need to be updated periodically.

  • Top Menu Bar Blinks after I installed OS 10.3.9

I installed a second hard drive inside my G4 a year ago and have decided to run everything off of it because it has 120 GB and the original drive is maxed out. I installed OS 10.3.9 on the second drive with no problems during the installation but now only the dock is visible. Everything on the dock seems to work but the desktop doesn't work at all. The top menu line blinks on and off and the HD1 and HD2 icons do not show up. I cannot access anything that is not on the dock. When I reboot using the original drive (with OS 10.2) everything works fine.
Over the years I have added 256MB + 512 MB + 512MB in the three RAM slots, so memory is not the problem.

  • Why does bookmarks disappear in menu bar after shutting down?, Why does bookmarks disappear in menu bar after shutting down?, Why does bookmarks disappear in menu bar after shutting down?

Why does bookmarks in menu bar disappear after shutting down and turning mac on?

When I am in "COLLECTIONS AND BOOKMARKS" view, I changed the name of the folder that is listed under "bookmarks" (that is designed to be a drop-down menu on the Bookmark Bar), I changed the name to "TV 1" from "TV Shows". I also added another folder under the Bookmarks called "TV 2" and I dragged and dropped two bookmarks from the "Bookmarks Menu" listing to the "TV 2" folder, and yet Safari would not update in real-time the Bookmark Bar to recognize that I created a "TV 2" folder/drop-down menu, nor did it update the contents of "TV Shows" to become "TV 1".
The only way I was able to update the drop-down menu bookmark folders on the Bookmark Bar was to drag-and-drop them one at a time from the "COLLECTIONS and BOOKMARKS" view.
Is it just me or is this a ******** way of updating bookmarks?
I think it is perfectly fine as being ONE WAY of updating bookmarks, but there really should be "real-time" updating of bookmarks. That is to say, I should be able to choose "bookmark this page" and add it to the folder named "TV Shows" and automatically see Safari update it without having to make two steps: 1) choosing the bookmark, and 2) going into the list of bookmarks to manually drag and drop the bookmark into the Bookmark Bar that contains the folder/drop-down menu.
