Menu call - from a menu!

I am having some issues with the erratic nature of menu functions (on your controller- and not a button)
when i am in a menu, and use the menu function on either a DVD remote, or the controller in my software, the DVD jumps back to the last place i viewed any track. I can obviously set the function properly whilst in a track, but not when in a menu.
any ideas!
I would like the function to return me to the menu 1 level up in my heirarchy, but still be distinctly different to the 'title function' which is set to yet another top level menu.
anyone know how?

with regard to the DVD tip--
I thought it would be the case with the menu call. I do have buttons to navigate back up a level, but the client wanted to always use the 'menu' function on the remote. (silly clients eh!)
strange that it has been left out, as there would surely be times when some people would make this action, and it kind of leaves them lost a little. Especially if the last track that they played was some distance away (interactivly speaking) on the DVD.

Menu Button from sub menu to main menu (transition movie in the way.)

In the general tab of the disc menu I set the menu button to go to the main menu.
When I click "menu" on my remote in simulation from a sub menu I expect it to return me to the the main menu.
However, clicking menu from a sub menu automatically brings me up one connection.
I have transition movies that are between the main menu and the sub menu.
So effectively, the menu button is a loop if a viewer tries to navigate upward with the menu button from a sub menu. They see the transitional movie and return to the sub menu they were trying to navigate from.
On page 609 of the manual it says...
Menu: Supported by all elements that can set remote control settings (disc, track, story, marker, and slideshow) except menus. You should generally link this button to the last menu viewed.
Is there a work around that will allow me to make the menu button link from a sub menu to the main menu, even if I have a transition movie in between?

Hang on Tom - are you saying that you are in a sub menu, pressing the 'menu' button on your remote control, seeing the transition and ending back at the menu you started from?
I would expect this if you used the menu button...
What happens is the menu button acts as a resume function if you are in a menu. That is, it will play the last piece of footage - your transition. This is set to go back to the sub menu, so that's where you end up. Read those details again... the bit where it said 'except menus'.
If you are in a menu and want to go up one level then you need to either use the Title button (if the title menu is the one you want to get to), or the return button (which won't work all that well). The best way, however, is to add a button on your menu screen which lets the viewer click it to go to the menu that you want.

Services menu missing from contextual menu

i think my services menu is broken. it doesn't show up at all in the contextual menu and from the application menu if i have say a pdf selected the only thing i see listed is 'new email with attachment' and services preferences. anyone else have this problem.

Yes, can report the exact same issue as well.
The loss of the services and automator menus from a contextual click is a real annoyance, and I really shouldn't have come to the Apple discussion forums to find this answer.
My scenairo is that I'm an entourage user for corporate mail and services (Sorry, can't stand the in-built clients for this purpose, they irritate me to no end). I had an automator action setup to easily create a new email with the selected items from the finder with a simple right click.
To do this now requires a whole new way of working, and to get back to some semblance of what I had before, as documented here, you have to de-select then re-select all the services in the services preference pane.
And while we're on the subject - why oh why can't we set the default program which email actions/services are sent to for existing services.
This is a real pain, and shows a distinct lack of polish in the end use expeirence for snow leopard, sigh.

You might check for another extension that has "Yahoo" in the name and in the Control Panel.

Ipod menu skips from artist menu to songs from 1album only

To explain what's going on...I go to the Artist menu, pick an Artist, and instead of giving me the list of albums and play all, it goes directly to one album for that artist and lists just those songs. If I got to the Songs menu, all the artist's songs are there. I just can't get them through the artist menu which is very irritating.
It's not the button, it works correctly in all other situations. Sorry if this has been posted before. Anybody have any advice?

So this is just the way the ipod is set up now? If I don't enter an album title, the song won't show up under Artist? It wasn't like this on my old iPod. If that's the case it's very irritating - a) I only like to have album names listed if I own the entire album and b) about half of my 3000 songs don't have album tags - what a pain in the *** to reenter. Oh well.

Call url from a menu

Hi,
It appears that a URL can't be called from a menu using the Portal toolset because the get_menu_link function doesn't work in this release. You get an insufficient privilege error. This is now a bug, #1852576, which development is working on.
Does anyone know a workaround?

Do you mean you are coding the HTML yourself?
Firefox will interpret links that do not start with a protocol (e.g., http://) (or with //) as being on the same site displaying the page. For links to external sites, make sure to use the full URL starting with the protocol, or at least starting from the //.
Does that fix it?

I'm not familiar with the 'Form Extensions' menu item but have you tried using the CUSTOM.pll and set_menu_item_property(menu_option_id,DISPLAYED, PROPERTY_OFF);
You should be able to do it with forms personalizations but I'm afraid I don't know the steps for that.

Something overriding menu call on a story

I have several stories in one track,acting as chapters. All behave similarly in that their end jump and menu call target the chapter menu and the button on the chapter menu for the story (chapter) just viewed. However one chapter is misbehaving. No matter what target I set for the menu call, hitting the menu button while that chapter plays goes to a different button on the menu. One I do not wish to target. I've checked and I have no menu call set for any of the markers for these chapters. What could be overriding the menu call I'm trying to set for this story?

Comments elsewhere forced me to learn how to use the connections tab. Once I viewed Advanced tab I could compare the other stories' connections and it was very apparent this one story had a menu call attached to its start marker. Deleting that did the trick! I guess I failed to view the connections for this marker when initially troubleshooting - never saw this marker.

Remote Menu button: to the chapter menu or the main menu?

Using DVD Pro (version 4.2.1) for the first time, and I've discovered a lot of fun elements. Here is a question about the remote control settings.
I want people to be able to return to the +main menu+ if they want while playing the track, by pressing 'menu' (and I've found the resume feature, too). However, the track has chapters, which are assigned to 3 chapter menus. So, when they are playing a particular chapter, i want them to be able to return from it to the +chapter menu+ it came from, by pressing the 'menu' button.
However, this doesn't work: when playing the video track, pressing the 'menu' button takes me to the chapter menu assigned to that particular chapter, not the main menu that I assigned to the track.
Well, I see in the handbook that the marker remote setting takes precedence over the track setting ... so which would you find preferable:
1. when the viewer is playing the video, the menu button: goes back to the main menu.... then when the viewer is watching a particular chapter, pressing 'menu' also goes back to the main menu, instead of the chapter menu, so viewer has to navigate back into the 'scenes' menu
or
2 when watching the whole video, pressing 'menu' takes the viewer to the chapter menu and then has to 'up' to the Main menu.... and therefore when watching a chapter only, 'menu' button returns to the particular chapter's menu, which is fine.
I thought I would have the 'menu' button return to the chapter menu:: up button for faster/easier access to the main menu, for viewers just watching the video, and convenience for viewers watching a chapter.
What is the more experienced opinion?

Yes, that's exactly what i want, and as above, for the chapter in the chapter menu to return to that chapter menu
If the former, put all of your markers into a single story and set the menu call to go back to the chapter menu.

I had already created stories from the second track on the dvd, with each one having an end jump back to the story menu and as no one had replied to this post, i had decided to make the chapters in the main track into stories too, but wanted them to continue into the next chapter. In fact i'd already created these 11 stories, some with 2 chapters in them, when I read your post.
So i did as you said and put all the chapter markers into one story, with no end jump for the chapters, but a menu call from the story to the 'chapter' menu instead of the main menu. Much cleaner than the way i had started to do.
And it works just the way i want it to : track's menu call is to the main menu, 'chapter' menu calls are to the chapter menu. Thank you so much!

Firefox will not open from the start menu or the taskbar, but WILL open when called from Windows Live Messenger

This started a couple weeks ago, but doesn't seem to coincide with any other installations or reconfigurations, so I'm having trouble getting at the root cause.
The first time I run Firefox after installing, it runs fine (complete with a full list of add-ons.) If I then close FF and try to start it from the task bar or start menu, nothing happens. I've tried starting in safe mode (shift+FF), but get the same result. I've restored FF to all the default settings, disabled all my plugins and add ons, but no change.
The really odd part is that if I click the 'Inbox' link in my Windows Live Messenger, FF opens perfectly. This made me think that it was my homepage causing the issue, but A: I can go to that page without problems once FF has started from WLM, and B: even if I use the FF default homepage or google.com, I get the same problem. Furthermore, if I restart FF from within FF (like after I disable/enable an add-on), it will also start properly.
No crash report is generated by FF when it fails to load, but Windows catches the problem in it's event log. I've pasted the contents of that record at the bottom in the hopes that someone can take a stab at what's wrong.
Finally, I've already run through the online crash help, but everything is either not related (since FF will start if called indirectly) or has already been prevented (absolutely no add-ons are running at the moment.)

I have exactly the same issue. After FF upgraded on its own to version 5, it won't open from start menu, taskbar, desktop icon, or even by pressing firefox.exe in program files directory. It does so by pressing a link at msn messenger, inside Outlook etc.
Disabling all addons, didn't help. Moreover, I can't start FF in safe mode or start profile manager (Start > Run> firefox.exe -ProfileManager).

Could be a third party app preventing you from being able to login.

Quit the MAS if it's open.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left then open the Library folder then the Caches folder.
Move the com.apple.appstore and the com.apple.storeagent files from the Caches folder to the Trash
From the same Library folder open the Preferences folder.
Move these files Preferences folder to the Trash: com.apple.appstore.plist and com.apple.storeagent.plist
Same Library folder open the Cookies folder. Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
Relaunch the MAS.

How to call a report from a menu ?

I am converting 6i client/server forms to 9i.
I have a menu that has an option on it to run a report for each menu item selected using RUN_PRODUCT.
9i is making this obsolete, so how can I call a report from a menu (not a form) now then ?
In a form it is fine cos I just use the Report Object - a menu does not have this facility.

Hi,
so here is how this should be done:
1. Create a Reports node in the Forms module that uses the menu (you don't have to create one Reports Object for each report that you want to run)
2. From the menu, before calling Run_Report_Object() use Set_Report_Object_Property() to set the phsical file name of the Reports that should be executed. This is kind of best practice and does not have a performance hit.
There is a bug filed against Forms to extend the menu files with a reports Object node. This could require a change to teh file structure which is why we looking for Forms 10i to implement this. (If it turns out that we can have it without recompiling the menu modules then it may go into a patch set - however this seems unlikely from my point of view)

Calling a form procedure from a menu

I want to call WebUtil's client_host function from my custom menu .MMB, but it doesn't appear that I can Subclass the WebUtil.OLB into a menu module.
Can I call a WebUtil function from my Menu that is attached to a Form that has been WebUtil enabled?
Or is there any other way I can call the client_host from a Menu/Form combination?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

and in the associated form you are free to use the whole webutil-stack after assigning the webutil.pll and inheriting the webutil-objectgroup
Typically you use this trick with EXECUTE_TRIGGER if you want to use a local Forms-Function in your menu
