Menu Extras Vanished

I updated 10.4.9 > 10.4.11 with the combo updater.
All the Apple Menu Extras promptly vanished. They won't come back when turned on in the individual prefPanes.
Repaired permissions, repaired with Disk Utility, yadda, yadda, yadda ...
An earlier thread of this name, now archived with no solutions that worked, suggested deleting:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
... but it doesn't help. Ditto logging into another account.
Has anyone out there ACTUALLY EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM and solved it?
Thanks!

I'm guessing you updated over an already corrupted system. The only solution is to Archive and Intall provided the drive is OK and has sufficient space:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Missing Menu Extras on Mavericks

From time to time, the Menu Extras on my primary display vanish, mostly. There should be 19, but only 3 show in their proper spots, the rest is just blank.. The hotspots of the others work, just no graphics. On my two other displays, they work fine. I haven't been able to find a repeatable case. This is on a MBP-Retina.
    Anyone else see this?

Do I need to turn foreign languages off somewhere, will never use them, press #1, english only please.  :^)

They really don't require repair. They are part of the ARD update. Ignore them as they are harmless. They will recur everytime you repair permissions.

  • Third-party menu extras?!?

OK, so I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Since it was a clean install, I had to reinstall al my old software. Here's a few of them that don't work anymore, thanx to Apple's new policy (whatever that may be) towards third party menu extras : Menu Meters, Toast&Mount (Toast Titanium), Move Items X. Funyy, I get the message sayong something like "Bla Bla....read the documentation" . What documentation... and how do I make them work anyway ?

Apple is not responsible for the failure or slowness of third-party developers to update their software for compatibility with new OS versions. They have access to the new OS software long before the public does, and if they can't or don't adapt their software to it, it's no one's fault but their own.
Visit the websites of your software's developers, make sure you have the latest version of each software item, and if it doesn't work in Snow Leopard, complain to the developer.

  • Control load order of third-party menulets / menu extras at startup

Does anyone know how to control or adjust the load order of third-party menulets / menu extras at startup? I am using the latest update to Tiger.

There are two types of third-party menulets: those that use Apple's sanctioned "NSStatusItem" (which is not as full featured as Apple's menulets) and those that use the reversed-engineered (and unpublished) "NSMenuExtra" which is exactly what Apple's menulets use. The method for arranging these in your menubar depend on the type:
    1) Apple and "NSMenuExtra" menulets: hold down the command key (and keep it down) and you can click and drag these in the order your like.
    2) "NSStatusItem" menulets: these are added to left side of the the other menulets in the order they are launched. If these applications are in your "Login Items" then OS X launches these simultaneously, which means those that launched "quicker" will end up towards the right, and others will end up towards the left. The only real solution to controlling this order is to control the launch order by writing an AppleScript for each one that puts in an artificial delay before launch. Then, use these AppleScripts as your Login Items instead.

I have os x 10.5.8 and noticed a menu extra that I have never seen before. Is there a way to identify it? I tried to delete it i.e. comm + drag, didn't work.

If you can't CMD+ drag it off, try this...
You've probably got a couple of corrupt preference files.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    /Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).
    reboot

  • Using internet connect menu extra in script

Inspired by this post I was wondering if there was a similiar possibility for the internet connect menu extra. Something like:
tell application "System Events" to tell the front menu bar of process "SystemUIServer"
set menu_extras to value of attribute "AXDescription" of menu bar items
repeat with x from 1 to the length of menu_extras
if item x of menu_extras is "internet connect menu extra" then exit repeat
    end repeat
    tell menu bar item x
    click
click 2nd menu item of front menu
    end tell
    end tell
This doesn't work as the "internet connect menu extra" bit isn't correct.
    PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thats very sweet. I was also wondering if there was a logical test I could use to check if bluetooth power was on or off, and also if the modem was connected.

  • Menu Extras - missing help files

I have tried to use menu meters BUT I get a message saying "Menu Extra Could Not Load... for instructions on enabling third-party menu extras please see the documentation".
However there is NOTHING to refer to on either the DVD, Apple help pages or the Menu extra website..
I'm now at a loss any suggestions as this seems to have fallen from the sight of apple.

If you're referring to MenuMeters tools then the vendor website indicates that you need to wait for update for Snow Leopard compatibility.

  • My battery cannot be added to menu bar in menu extras snow leopard. Why?

I go to menu extras folder and double-click battery.menu and nothing happens. I do not have a battery icon up above in the menu bar. Why won't double-clicking battery.menu add that?

Because you use an iMac and they don't have batteries other than the battery used for PRAM. If you have a notebook like an MacBook Pro or MBA then please post in the correct forum.

  • VPN connect via menu extra fails, but works via prefpane - anybody else?

Is anybody out there with the same symptom, getting an error message when trying to establish a VPN connection via VPN menu extra but being able to connect properly via networking prefpane? Would be interesting to know if this could be a bug worth sending a report to Apple...
    PB G4, Mac OS X 10.5.5

Tim, you made it. Another example for that famous tricky problems after OS migration. I had the VPN prefs already on Mac OS X 10.4 and trusted them on Mac OS X 10.5 after their automatic
    adoption too...
    Thx mate!

  • Command to turn on ARD Menu Extra?

I use Netboot and builds to deploy machines, But one of the settings I can't get set right when a new user logs onto a machine is the ARD Menu Extra to be on..
I know there must be a simple command I can 'push' to turn on the ARD Menu Extra that i'm not finding. I want users to know if i (being the lone Administrator for about 80 Macs) am logged onto their machine.
    Thanks!

    Hi
    Assuming I've understood you correctly:
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -configure -clientopts -setmenuextra -menuextra yes
You should get feedback on the screen looking something like this:
    Starting...
    Set the client options.
    Done.
Terminal should then return you to the bash prompt. To disable the option:
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -configure -clientopts -setmenuextra -menuextra no
    The kickstart manual is here:
    sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -help
The commands should all be on one line.
    HTH?

  • Spotlight Menu Extra is dead

It seems that my spotlight menu extra (along with all of the other Apple supplied menu extras) has died after the security update. I get the felling Apple went a bit overboard in trying to address the recent trojan/script vulnerability and killed menu extras also. I've tried chmod +x on the extras but it doesn't seem to work. The SystemUIserver process also seems hosed since it doesn't seem to remain alive. What gives Apple?

This seems to have been a problem with custom installations involving BezelServices.framework and FrontRow. Make sure the "custom" installations are removed and the original BezelServices.framework is restored.

  • Time Machine Menu Extra, and Preference Pane not remembering Recent Backups

For some reason, all of a sudden under my Time Machine Menu Extra, and the Preference Pane it's self shows the most recent backup as "--". I will watch it back up successfully, and no change. I can even load into time machine, see my recent hourly backups for the last few days and still refuses to update. Any ideas?

    Hello jr:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I have never seen that before. However, I think I would trash the preference file (com.apple.timemachine.plist) and restart your computer.

  • 10.4.3 - iChat Menu Extra sounds not working

Now that I've upgraded the OS to 10.4.3, I've noticed that if I sign on to AIM and/or Bonjour through the iChat menu extra that the default sign-on sounds are no longer working.
I've got all available OS updates installed, and for that matter the 10.4.3 update should be the only one that affects iChat to date.
I upgraded to 10.4.3 via the Combo Updater, not through Software Update.app.
    I've been able to confirm this on a PowerMac G4 933MHz running 10.4.3, and with a friend's 12" PowerBook G4 running 10.4.3 as well.
Has anyone else experienced this so far?

Please do not tell me I am not understanding - I have asked a question about a single feature that existed before 10.4.3; not video, not the concepts behind menu extras, and not the comparison between the menu extra and the full application.
I do believe it's fairly obvious to see that the menu extra is limited in what it does. However it is not a limited "version" of iChat, which yes, you even said that in your above post.
If you are unable to show proof that this, a change, is "by design" then please, don't say that. What you have said is of opinion until otherwise proven differently. And by differently I do mean by cold, hard documentation by Apple.
Meanwhile, I'd like to know if anyone else is seeing this.
