Menu Insert Function is often Greyed out

New user of numbers and Forum. Have searched this to no avail sorry if inappropriate post.
Insert>Function submenu is greyed out under all circumstances other than when a blank cell is selected (not even an "=" allowed). This makes it very tedious to construct longer formulars with >1 function in them (ie. most formulars!). Is there something I am missing? This is User friendly software gone too far, not friendly.
In particular I want to use Insert>Functions>More Functions... inside a formular as I am still migrating from Excel and iWorks memories.

With iWork you got three PDF Users Guides which are also for you.
On page 26 of the English one dedicated to Numbers you would find useful explanations.
You are right, the Insert functions menu item is often greyed but the efficient way to insert a function is not this one.
It's a button in the toolbar:

I've gotten the iPod to sync after restoring it and not changing ANY of the music sync settings. I didn't even click "sync music", I just have it on manual and clicked autofill.
After it synced all of the music successfully, I tried to sync a playlist (my recently added), and it's gone bonkers again, it won't sync the playlist's music, or any new music now.

"Place in" function in Bridge greyed out, after uninstalling previous version of CC.

I recently updated to the CC 2014 version of the apps. After that I removed the previous versions of Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator.
Now the 'Place In" function in Bridge is greyed out. I tried restoring File associations, re-installing Bridge etc... but nothing worked. It's still unavailable.
Is there any way I can link Bridge with the 2014 apps again so I can use the 'place in' function again?

There are 2 startup scripts in Bridge: "Adobe Bridge CC" script & "Auto Collection Scripts CC 2014". When I click 'reveal all my startup scripts' I get an empty folder.
I also tried resetting my preferences but that didn't help. The 'Place in...' function is still greyed out.
I also had to manually set all the file associations with my apps because bridge always tried to open the previous versions from Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC etc...
(in fact...If I reset the file associations, bridge defaults back to the previous versions for all apps... and then I have to change it again to the CC 2014 version)
It's as if Bridge doesn't know I have the CC 2014 version and can't communicate with it.

Safari 7.0.4 Back button often greyed out.

Since updating to Mavericks and getting Safari 7.0.4 with that, often my Safari back button is greyed out when clicking on a link in a page. When a link opens a new window, of course there will be no back button function for that new window until you click on to another page. That is not the problem. My back button is greyed out often when I click on a link that changes the current window to the new page without giving me a new window. Normal surfing stuff. I have had to use my History dropdown to go back to the previous page.

Delete the cache and troubleshoot Safari extensions and plug-ins...
pen a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

CP5 - import function is always greyed out

Hi all,
the function that lets you import frames and captions from other projects (in the "File" menu) is always greyed out. I can open parallel projects and do a copy & paste, but I never had problems using this feature in previous releases. Maybe I am overlooking something basic?
Edit: Please excuse, maybe I have confused something from begin with - the help system is not available on my computer because I have no online-connection. Maybe this feature is not available at all any more in CP5? The menu entry was named something like "Import frames and captions" (I use a non-english UI).

Hi Robert,
The option to import slides or entire CP-project is not available anymore, because you have now the possibility to open multiple files at once (Multi Document Interface) which makes the copy/pase much easier.
The Option to import Captions will only be available when you have exported those captions first of all, perhaps for translation goals. Then you will be able to re-import the same file and the changed text in the captions will be applied.

I am having a lot of issues but the big one is that my menu, buttons and toolbar keep greying out

I am having multiple issues and they all seem related to the menu/settings:
• Every time I start Firefox, my bookmarks toolbar is invisible. The box to display Bookmarks Toolbar IS checked but I have to disable and then re-enable it on the toolbar menu in order to get them to display again.
• "Tabs on Top" keeps defaulting to off. I check the box every time I run the browser, but every time I close it, it's back off again when I restart.
• I keep getting tabs that cease to be interactive. They are stuck open and I cannot close, move, or pin them. In fact, if I try to click on the tab, it selects the tab immediately to the right of it. It's like Firefox does not realise these tabs exist.
All of these are frustrating but I could handle them if this also wasn't happening:
• Periodically, all my menus and buttons grey out and I am unable to use any of them. I can't click bookmarks, I can't use my back/forward buttons, I can't access anything on the menus. I can still use the URL bar and interact with the websites themselves. It seems particularly prone to doing this while I am adjusting settings or toolbars which unfortunately I have to do a lot because of the aforementioned issues. I have not yet been able to use the browser for longer than 15 minutes before it happens. I am having to restart it constantly.
Potentially Helpful Information:
I have reinstalled Firefox (once as an upgrade, once I uninstalled the original one first) several times at home in hopes this would help, but it has not.
I am using Windows 7. (at work I am still running 2k and Firefox 4 works great)
The only addons I am using are Morning Coffee, Personas, Adblock and Noscript. I use them also at work with Firefox 4 without issue. They are all updated for the latest version. Additionally, disabling them makes no difference in the presentation of these issues.

If you are having that many issues, and if you have tried all five of the Five Rs, then what I would do is take it to an Apple store to the genius bar and let them look at it. It surely sounds as if there might be something wrong with the iPod itself, and if there is, and they can't fix it, they will give you a new one on the spot (assuming they have them in stock).

Menu Item "Migration/Script Generation" greyed out in 1.5.3

I have just set this tool up, and am trying to general DDL scripts for an existing database to which I must make incremental modifications.
I have looked and seen that the way to do this is to use the above menu item, but on my installation it is greyed out. When I open the Preferences menu and select the base of the "Migrarion" sub-tree, the default repository is greyed out, and I am not able to set it.
What could the problem be? I have looked in the on-line help and forums, but haven't seen anything really relevant. It would seem to be a basic issue.
By the way, if it's relevant, this SQL Deeloper instance was installed on a German version of Windows XP, and many of the menu items are in German.

Migration is moving structure and/or data from one type of database to another (e.g. SQL Server to Oracle).
What you want is the Database Diff tool, which can generate you the diferential scripts...

I can't print my statements from banking websites - the option to print (drop down file menu) from the website is greyed out

I do my banking online, and have previously been able to print my statements off the website. Since the last update, although the page shows in the browser as normal, the option to print from the drop-down file menu is greyed out and I cannot print anything, even if I try and select a portion. It is not a problem with the website as I can print without a problem in another browser program. This problem has now persisted for quite a while with no resolution over time. How do I get Firefox to allow print from a secure website (I assume that is the problem?) It occurs with more than one secure site (two different banks)

I have the same problem... not being able to print website 'Print' pages. I have read carefully the above link and have followed the reset directions in about:config, but I still cannot print in Firefox. Both Google Chrome and IE work perfectly every time. I have verified that the correct printer is selected and that the margins are in order (0.5 all around happen to be what mine are set for). I have resorted to use the Firefox Add On "View this Page in IE" whenever I need to print something. Works like a charm, but come on... it should work in Firefox too! I know there is some setting or something, but the Problems_printing_web_pages link had nothing there that worked for me.

The Function Buttons are Greyed Out in Numbers

I am new to Numbers having used Excel for years. I am trying to add up a column of figures but when I highlight the column and click the 'Function' button at the top of the page, all the functions are greyed out so not usable. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
I am using Numbers 3.1, downloaded on Saturday.

select multiple columns, then drag the quick sum tag or use the formula:
=sum(<RANGE1>, <RANGE2>, <RANGE3>, ...)
where <RANGE1> thru <RANGEn> are any valid ranges
e.g.
=sum(A:C) will sum columns which would be the same thing as:
=sum(A, B, C)
you can also sum rows 1, 4, and 7 like this:
=sum(1:1, 4:4, 7:7)

Why is my menu item Filter Distort Zigzag greyed out?

Having same problem on both PS4 and PS6 using Mac OS 10.6.
Even starting with simple JPG file with color space RGB/8, this filter selection is the only one that is greyed out.
I have in fact used the Zigzag filter when I create a new file, add a new layer with a gradient color. There, the Zigzag option is available and works as it should. I'm just unable to use it on an existing image that is not a gradient layer. All the tutorials that I've seen or read simple say use an elliptical tool to make a selection of the image and copy the selection to a new layer. Then go directly to the Filter>Distort menu and select Zigzag. It's just not available when I do that.
Any thoughts?

Found my own answer...
File must have been too large, even though it was a flat JPG saved at 10 setting.
I cropped it down to under 2000x2000 pixels and the Zigzag filter is now available.
Hope this helps someone else later.

Logic 9 - factory and function options are greyed out in audio editor

When editing audio files, I can't seem to use the things like reverse, fade in fade out etc. as they are all grey. I've tried all sorts of audio files and made sure they're not locked and also tried bouncing them down into another folder but no joy. Any ideas?

My partition menu in Disk Utility is greyed out in recovery partition

So upgraded to yosemite and after a while decided that i would do a clean install of it because it didn't update the recover partition and i could no longer boot into Ubuntu partition. So i made my bootable drive and booted into it. I was met with:
When i clicked on the hard drive in the sidebar that it was only 300gbs, which is the size of my os x partition.
I then went to the partition menu and i could not change anything there. I can't resize anything or repartition anything.
I've tried to do multiple things in terminal from recovery and bootable disk but to no avail. It still won't work. The thing is that when i type diskutil list into terminal i get

/dev/disk0 is the internal hard drive that i want to reformat, /dev/disk1 i don't know what that is. It could be an internal thing in the drive? And /dev/disk2 is my external hard drive that is running mavericks that i writing this on.
I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC but that didn't help.
Didn't know if reinstalling the OS would help?
What i want to get is to reformat /dev/disk0 so that i have a 500gb hard drive that i can then do a clean install of yosemite on and then possibly make an ubuntu partition later. PLEASE HELP!!!

And, this was from the Internet Recovery utilities window, right? OK, this next suggestion depends on which MBA model you have. Check the link below. If your model came with Lion pre-installed then it is capable of using Internet Recovery. If it came with a late version of Snow Leopard it can be upgraded via a firmware update. You will find this in the link below.
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
            if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Once the Utility Menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Now try removing the partition again. If you have the same error, then do the following:
From the screen's menubar select Terminal from the Utilities menu. Enter the following at the prompt:
     diskutil list
Press RETURN. You should see a display of your devices. Next enter:
     diskutil unmountDisk force /dev/disk0
Press RETURN. Now, if this works your internal drive should be unmounted. Return to Disk Utility and try the process of removing the partition.

Murray, I'm going to get cranky here.
When using AP Divs in concert with Flash and also in concert with Spry and other Javascript, you certainly do have to put them on the page in the right order or your Spry menus will not fall over your AP Divs in visually-appropriate layering. This makes them tricky.
The mantra that an AP Div is absolutely positioned relative to its containing element flies out the window in such situations. To be clear, one must re-think which containing element one is using...it doesn't not work...and the solution is to change one's thinking in terms of which containing element to use.
I have recently worked (and worked and worked) on getting such a page to function the same in all browsers. So you can't tell me that they all render the same, because they do not. Ultimately, they did, but mainly because I changed my code.
It is very possible that you have successfully internalized the order in which it is necessary to make things work from the very beginning (Good for you!) or you have heeded the generally trumpeted call to not use AP Divs. In constructing this particular page (a page with a large background image over which must be located numerous other bits, including a Spry Menu Bar), I worked from the top down as I usually do, and "top down" (top of the viewport from header to footer) is not always the same as "picture plane out" in stacking order.
Every browser except the Microsoft browsers must be reading my mind and my assigned z-order, and interpreting stacking as I do, as I work from the top down. Microsoft insists that APDivs that will later be expected to "lie down" under Spry Menus and so forth be coded and loaded BEFORE those Spry Menus show up.
So as I worked, I converted some of the AP Divs (conveniently positioned, but ultimately unworkable because of IE) to Relative Divs. It is not a system I use frequently, and it is not my usual system, and it is not the system I would necessarily recommend, but it is possible as a solution to an untenable situation.
Such is my experience, decidedly on a shorter calendar than yours, but there it is.

Issues with Fast User Switching, language pref, greyed out menu options

I have only one user logged in to my Macbook. If i want to select the other user using Fast User Switching and clicking on the username in top right corner of screen, nothing happens. The other user at this time is still logged out.
Incidentally, when i click on the airport symbol, the wireless networks are often greyed out and i can't change networks unless in go into network prefs.
One more thing - i have english and spanish selected as languages in international preferences. I ca not switch back to english at all - by clicking on the flag in the menu bar or by going into sys prefs. When n battery power, power characteristics are also greyed out and unable to select a different profile.

It sounds like everything in your menu bar is florfed.
Can you log in to the other user account from the login window instead of by fast user switching? If so, does that account have the same problems with the menu bar?
