Menu items and panels gone

Hi,
We are having a problem with one of our installations of InDesign CS4 (6.0.6) on PC, Windows XP, on a user account with Administrator's rights.
It is an issue described many times on the forums:
All of a sudden, some pallets stopped showing correctly - such as the Pages which appeared blank, until we realized the thumbnails showed far to the right in the panel, and could be revealed when the panel was extended over half of the screen.
We tried the Delete Preferences trick on startup, which not only didn't help but in fact all panels (pallets) disappeared, and along with them, many items in the menus disappeared as well. For example, under Window, there are only three items (Arrange, Workspace and Object & Layout > Pathfinder).
Finally, InDesign started showing the error message "Adobe InDesign is missing required files. Please re-install.", referring to some files in the TypeSupport folder. (The files are there, only apparently inaccessible to ID.)
So it does look like a problem with the account's permissions. However, we can't find a way how to fix it.
What we've tried and did not help:
- Rebuilding preferences
- Hitting the Tab key
- Removing all current workspaces from the Workspaces folder
- Running ID in compatibility mode
Following the hints here: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb408055, these did not work for us:
- Setting permissions for the InDesign key in the registry
- Setting the rights on the Presets folder
- Renaming the locale folders
We even cannot repair or uninstall InDesign - the setup.exe freezes at some point, without any message, probably again not able to access some files.
The only thing that works is to run InDesign using another account (with the same rights, apparently). However, this is not a good solution, as there are many things connected to our current account.
Also, we CAN run other CS4 apps on the current account.
So, is there any way, please, to make InDesign access again all that it needs?

Sounds like that user account is seriously damaged. You might try logging in on a new Admin account, then copying the profile from the accoutn that you tested and found that it worked to the account with problems, or it might be faster and easier to just uninstall, run the clean tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) and reinstall.

It seems like I can either have equal spacing between the horizontal menu items and the drop down menu will show up centered , or I say the menu items should be of equal size, and then drop down will be left aligned. Thank you for reporting the issue. It seems to be a Bug and we have logged the same. Hopefully it will get fixed in coming releases.
As of now we do not have any workaround for same. However once we have some workaround, we will definitely share it with you.

How do you increase type size in menu bars and panels?

I recently abandoned my Mac Pro 1,1 for a shiny new Mac Pro cylinder running Mavericks 10.9.5. I have paired it with an LG 27" IPS display. The reason I am using the LG is because I was frustrated that Apple pays absolutely no attention to the pleas of their pro users for a non-reflective display.
And now I find that the type in the menu bars and panels is so small that it literally causes me eyestrain - and that I can't increase the type size. I am older (62), but I still need to use my Mac to survive. Unfortunately, though, it appears that Apple designers have again ignored the needs of their pro users - in this case, older ones.
I have been a graphic designer and a producer of technical and marketing publications for over 35 years, and I appreciate good-looking design - but the real measure of design is usability. Even great-looking design must be user friendly.
So now I am wondering if Apple interface designers are amateurs, or if they just don't give a @#$% about their users.
Did I miss it? Is their a way to increase type size in menu bars, etc.?

Yes.
System preferences > Displays > Resolution ...
choose "Scaled" and pick an alternate resolution.
When you do this, text will be drawn as if your screen were actually set to that revolution, but graphics will be drawn full-scale at the native resolution.
This feature was invented for Retina Displays, and has finally been made available for additional displays.

Implementing menu items and saving state in my app

I'm a new user to the forums, but have a little bit of java programming experience.
currently i'm writing some business applications, one of which is a payroll system. The target audience is end-user bookkeepers so i am planning for a GUI front end.
My first question relates to how programs save their state. for example, each month the bookkeeper will launch the program and add the next months payments, or he/she will open the program to fix a mistake. In general how do programs like word, excel (or anything) save and load files to work with? I was thinking about using XML. I thought i would load in an XML file containing all work so far, and then the user could save to it, which would add the new work.
Question the second: A lot of gui java apps i use (like argo, symphony etc) have standard menus at the tops. Items like open, save, close, print etc. How are developers actually doing this? is there some premade classes i can just use in my programs as well that would be me this funtionality? This kindof relates to my first question about saving and opening. Further, it seems there are two GUI libraries to consider - either SWT or Swring. Eclipse plugins are written in SWT (from what i have heard). Can anybody recommend which API i should be using to create a GUI for my program?
I think that's it for now. If anybody can provide me with advice i woudl be most grateful, as i'm at a bit of a standstill with my development.

The specifics of what happens when the individual menu items are selected are left up to the programmer.
If you are looking for prebuilt menubars with code attached to perform common functions, then I do not know of any included in Java.

Adding menu items and making system calls in AfterEffects (AE,CS3)

We are looking to do the following things via javascript in AfterEffects CS3. It does seem straight-forward, but am unable to find a good reference or example.
* Add at startup a menu item under "File" (or similar main menu) and have it call a script function when clicked.
* Have a script make an external system call (to launch an external application/executable with a few parameters)
Any insights on how to achieve this?

I wanted to see if there was any update on this, I'm writing a series of tools and would love to create a custom menu for quick and easy access.
If it turns out there isn't an "easy" way to do this (env variables, special directory locations, javascripts) would anyone know if access to the menubar is possible from the Plugin API?
I'm fairly new to After Effects, just getting up-to-speed on the environment now... seeing if I can duplicate the functionality of some old Nuke scripts in AE.

CK-200 Audio qualiy, missing menu items and softwa...

Hi all. First post and all that jazz.
Wonder if anyone can assist with several issues I'm having with a CK-200. to list them:
Audio quality. This is perhaps the worst problem. I can hear the person I'm talking to quite clearly, (ISO version on decent car speakers) but the background noise reported by the other person is really really bad. Whilst my car isn't the quietest in the world (LandRover Discovery) it's certainly not loud, but everyone has commented that they can barely hear me when I'm at motorway speeds. Does the external microphone help remove background noise much? I certainly hope so, as at the moment I have to be at 40mph or below to be heard properly. I've tried calling someone else driving my car, and sure enough it sounds like the microphone is in the engine bay, and the person I'm talking to is in the boot!
Second: When I first got the kit, it appeared to understand that one of my phones (E90) was not compatible with downloading the address book, and so it didn't try, but if I made a few calls the kit remembered the numbers called. After "updating" the software a few months ago, it now constantly tries to download the address book, fails, and if I try to do a "last number redial" it tells me that it can't download the address book.
Lastly... (and has been mentioned in another thread) There appears to be a number of menu items missing, most noticeably the option to read a received text message. The icon appears to tell me I have a new text, but there's absolutely nothing I can do about it!
Shame, as it's a nice car kit, and the two-phone-connectivity is excellent, but I really must address these issues!

PS. as a sidenote, where can I actually buy a CA-134 for this kit from? I know it's the cable I need, but I can't actually find one for sale anywhere!

Not sure about inside the CK-200 unit - but inside Nokia external mic's the mike element is usually mounted in a block of foam rubber to absorb vibrations carrying through. Little confused by the download issues. The CK-200 can download your contacts as one aspect but also your call history (calls made/missed/received etc) as another.
The contacts (address book) download certainly seems to stop dead when you set auto to off on all version and handsets I have tried. On recent software versions Nokia introduced the automatic download of call history, as far as I know this cannot be disabled - I would quite like to be able to as I don't really need it and it delays the initial connection before you can make a call. But anyway it sounds like its this thats giving you trouble. It may be down to some setting in your phone you can make to deny it permission to cooperate with the CK-200. Anyway see how it goes with V.3 first of course. (can't be long now )

AdBlock Plus eliminates menu items and statusbar items

When I activate Adblock Plus, several menu items disappear and statusbar items from other plugins also disappear, not to mention the ADP icon which is nowhere to be found despite that I have it checked on the ADP menu. It's not necessary to uninstall ADP, simply disabling it and all these things come back. I've reported this to mozdev.org, but upon reading other people's comments it seems I'm not the only one with the problem

Data menu items and Forms

I am enabling the Data menu items for my custom form like this:
myForm.EnableMenu("1281", true);
myForm.EnableMenu("1282", true);
myForm.EnableMenu("1283", true);

This works fine for my form but as soon as a SAP system form gets focus, the Data menu items do not work until I close my form. Do I need to do something in the "lose focus" event for my form?

In your menu event code, are you checking to see if your custom form is the active form before processing the menu event?
If not your code will be processed regardless of which form is currently active, and this could lead to the behaviour you describe.
You can tell if your custom form is active by looking at the "selected" property of form object.

Muiltiple menu items and unwanted square

I'm not sure what happed but all of a sudden i have multiple menu items on the main apple menu and there is a square box either on the desktop or various applications such as entourage or word etc.
I'm not sure if it has something to do with user preferences but I have no clue what triggered it.

Well, this is a programming question more than a question on how to use the Leopard environment (you might want to post to one to the programming forums).
However, basically, you can't remove the Dock menu items that the Dock itself adds (add/remove from dock, etc.). You can add your own menu items, however. Use the interface builder to create a nib that has a menu in it -- call it something catchy like MyMenu.nib.
Then in the application property list file (Info.plist) add property called "AppleDockMenu" and set the value to a string that's the name of your nib file (without the .nib extension).
Subsequently, you treat that menu just as you would the menus in your menu bar. That's all there is to it.

The label should be displayed as
Client
Reports rather than Client Reports
on the screen.
I tried CHR(i) for all the 255 ascii numbers.
I get some special characters inbetween but never got a new line.
Can any one have some ideas about this. I would like to use the same feature for a menu item also.

U can do this in the following way :
1. Create a Icon button in your Forms canvas.
2. create a icon file (.ico) by writing a multiline text.
3. Attach this .ico file to the icon button in your forms.

What probably happened: You clicked an old iPhoto library in your Pictures folder. This caused two things to happen:
Since the library was old, it needed upgrading and iPhoto upgraded the library
The upgraded library is now your current library, until you select a different library.
Try this (assuming you are using iPhoto '11):
If iPhoto is running,use the command "File > Switch to Library" from the File menu.
Select your previous iPhoto library from the library Chooser panel to switch back to that library.
If iPhoto is not open, hold down the alt/option key while launching iPhoto to show the Library Chooser panel.

Start Menu items/shotcuts and Start Menu search ability on multiple workstations

2/13/2014 our IT department began to receive complaints of missing programs. After investigation of a few users we were able to determine that the programs existed but all shortcuts and items from the start menu had been completely removed. In addition the
searching feature of the start menu was not functional. This happened to about 90% of our environment and the catalyst seemed to be Windows updates or at least occurred after the auto reboot initiated by Windows Updates. The only items visible in start
menu were items added after the fact, internet explorer, magnifier, command prompt, and notepad. All other items, folders, and the ability to search installed programs or folders were completely removed. However all programs are present in the program files
folders. THe start menu folder in program data was empty except for the aforementioned items. Additionally properties of start menu had all necessary checks in boxes such as search program files and folders etc. Also show hidden items and folders is enabled
for many users so the items were not hidden but gone. And the biggest kicker of all was after a full domain investigation into the issues we found that the majority of our windows server platforms, primarily 2008, were also affected and system restore is unavailable.
This conflicts with our idea that Windows Updates caused this since our servers get their updates on a manual initiated basis by their admins which we have not performed as of yet for this month. This caused me to begin looking at SCCM SCEP as all systems
have System Center Endpoint Protection and received definition updates. Also accessing different user profiles or even a new profile did not make a difference, issue still present.
Due to the enormous inconvenience we sent out a company wide email asking users to perform system restores to get us in a stable state. A system restore to the day before Windows updates (second Wednesday of every month configured by SCCM SCUP) restored
the start menu items.
On a multitude of machines IT performed troubleshooting and system restores recording the changes removed and added. We then, on a healthy machine, started to apply the windows updates and SCEP (antivirus) definitions 1 by 1 with out success of replicating
the issue. Next we performed a system wide antivirus full scan and did not find any viruses. This is obviously not a system criticle issue bringing us down but is a huge concern for us in IT as it happened company wide and caused a large flux of tickets and
some down time for non-technical users. We most definitely want to know the cause and after several days of investigation and troubleshooting Im turning to the Microsoft community for help.
I know I categorized this as a Windows 7 issue and its affecting windows server 2008, 2003, and 7, but I did not see a forum for all windows platforms. Since the majority of affected users are Windows 7 I opened it here.
So to summarize in a bulleted format:
Issue: Wide spread issue affecting around 60-70 users and servers, all profiles, were all start menu items save one or two system defaults were removed. Additionally the searching feature for the start menu looks to be broken as programs
exist in program files and are unsearchable from start menu. IT was also affected and I remain affected until I find the cause.
Investigation and Troubleshooting:
Start menu properties: nothing has changed and search options are enabled.
Missing items are not hidden, hiding and unhiding does nothing and folder options show hidden files is checked.
Program data start menu location is indeed empty as well as user app data start menu location
No group policy's are in place altering start menu items and no group policy changes were made as of recent
No SCCM packages pushed company wide in last month or pushed individually
Windows Updates occurred on windows 7 machines only before the issue occurred and computers restarted and the issue surfaced
System Center Endpoint Protection Antivirus updates and definitions deployed just before the occurrence with windows updates. SCEP def updates happen on all windows boxes to include servers
Paint.exe was completely missing from system32 folder for some users machines to include my own
System restore to that morning before restarts or previous day fixes the issue for windows 7 users
No windows updates were initiated on any servers
Servers were also affected with windows 7 machines
About half the users affected had corrupt Microsoft Office 2013 Pro Plus Click to Run installations and for some the system restore did not fix this and we had to re-install office for around 10 users
SCEP antivirus did not catch any viruses that could cause this, I performed MBAM scans on a handful of machines and didn't find anything either.
Re-creating start menu shortcuts works
Happened to two of our companies locations NH and MA, all part of the same domain but different LANS of course. Companies are interconnected by MPLS connection.
I combed through SCCM to see if anything deployed and found nothing. Currently I have SCUP updates and SCEP updates disabled. I will post a list of Windows Updates that occurred when the issue occurred as well as the SCEP updates. I have read all the threads
about this types of issues and tried all steps without success. Googling the issue also did not rear results.

I would like to suggest you try these steps to figure out what could be causing this problem.
1. Run Troubleshooter
Open the Search and Indexing troubleshooter

2. Create a new library and include fewer folders for test purpose. Now search for a file from that folder. See if it works.

3. Try to rebuild search indexing. Refer the steps from the following article.

Also you may use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to check the issue. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Context Menu Items Gone After Running "cleaner" program. Help...

So with the whole Flashback/Flashfake thing I paniced (stupid on my part) ran a virus program called VirusBarrier Express and ran CCleaner (again, stupid me). Hoping I would clear off unused or harmful files I apparently in the process messed up my context menu. Items that were previously in the context menu are now gone. I did as much reading about possible fixes as I could and this is where everything stands.
Not every item in the image below was at the botton of the context menu, but iPack certainly was as well as various other menu items that have since dissapeared.
While searching the internet I came across a suggestion leading me to "library/Contextual Menu Items" and when I followed that directory for both my user and system I couldn't find a Contextual Menu Items folder. There wasn't any. I've had this "missing file/folder" problem before with preference files; just a side note.
I created the folder manually and restarted with no change at all.
Obviously I accidentally deleted something that shouldn't have been deleted. Is there any way to get back those missing items?

Thank you everybody for your input and advice! I've deleted the virus software, but if I use any in the future I'll be sure to have only one installed. I initally downloaded multiple ones, but only ran one (VirusBarrier).
I restored from a Time Machine backup with the help of Apple tech support to before I ran CCleaner (never running something like that again) and the problem fixed itself.
I will have to be far more wary of running programs in the future. Thank you again for everybody's input and advice!

How do I edit and create new Spry2 menu items?

I have manged to use adobe air to style and insert a spry2 menu - looks OK
However,I do not undestand how to edit the menu items
i.e. creating new menu items and adding new sub menu items
On spry1 it was easy - just click the top of the menu and a wizard appeared at the bottom of the page
The spry2 menu icon seems to be unclickable/greyed out?
Can anyone help

Thanks for the reply - I already thought of that and I can edit the menu using code view (although I am not sure how you would 'see the sub menus in design view?) but I was wondering if spry2 has the same time saving wizard in the properties panel (as Spry1) that simplifies and speeds up the process?
To restate the question: I can see a spry2 menu icon in the properties panel but it doesn't do anything as it's greyed out.
Is there an option in dreamweaver (or adobe air which styles the menu) that makes a menu wizard work in the properties panel?
If not then I guess I have to do it in code view - very tedious!?
