Menu key changed to application switcher

While entering new number in contact list the menu key now operates the application switcher. HELP....can't access any apps other than on home screen. Any suggestions or procedures on how to get menu assigned back to menu key?

Hey, thanks for posting this - I had the same issue after playing about with settings on my new 9700... putting the Key Rate back to Normal sorted out the Menu Key issue for me.
Thanks for your post

  • Changing the application switcher shortcut

    Hi,
Can anyone help me find where or how to change the application switcher shortcut (command-tab).
I'm using illustrator and I'm used to switching between my selection tools using command-tab. But now with OSX Leopard, every time I do that, it just switches applications.
I've tried mac help and also have searched these forums but haven't found a similar request.
    Thanks.

I've been looking everywhere for a way to change this, or at least disable the shortcut. I have the same problem, but with QuarkXPress. I know that the command originates from the Dock, so I bet there's a way to hack the Dock so it disbles the shortcut...

  • Can Application Switcher be turned off?

I am wondering if I can inactivate the command-tab key assignment to Application Switcher. Possible? Can't seem to find a way so far.

Just wanted to add my voice to those who want to disable predictive text. I hated it on my Nokia and turned it off (YES!!!). It makes my iPhone 3G seem LESS intuitive because it rarely, if ever, divines MY intentions. Whether it is a name, a term or phrase or from the smattering of foreign languages I incorporate in EVERYDAY life, the iPhone vomits up wrong choices, forcing me to correct, re-type, and sometimes re-re-re-type what I want. This is not a SMART feature.
Kinda reminds me of the usual MS explanation: it's not a bug, it's a feature!

  • Application Key (Menu Key) (Right Click Button)

    Hi,
I have an HP Pavillon Notebook 13-b200nt model. But the notebook doesn't have "application (menu) key which is used instead of right click of mouse.
Is it possible to change any key function as rihgt click option? Or as far as i know "shift + F10" is a short cut of right click, may i create another short cut?
    Thanks in advance,

  • How to change default application in file context menu

I know you can change the application that opens a file in the file;s info window (command i) and then double clicking the file opens it in that application. However the context menu still shows the same original default application. How to change what is shown as default in context menu?

You can't. You can change the default app in Get Info which will change the first listed app in the context menu to that default app. How the context menu is built is not under user control.

  • How to switch to full screen faster and change between applications in full screen faster

Hi, my problem is that when I switch any application to full screen it does a little animation which spends a little time before getting to the full screen mode. The other problem is that when I change between applications in full screen mode it also does a little animation!
How can I eliminate those annoying ways of losing time?
I hope and thank very much your answers!

sure man, after all the help i got, why not give some in return...
to make it full screen on oppening i put this code on the 1st frame:
    fscommand("fullscreen", "true")
i also make 2 buttons for making the screen smaller and bigger again, for both i used the following
    on (release) {
    fscommand("fullscreen", "false")
this is for making it smaller, and for full screen i used "true" instead of  "false"
of course i added a button foe exit with the follownig code:
    on (release) {
    fscommand("quit")
    hope i helped...

  • Application switching not working properly

Today something strange started happening. When I try to switch to an open application, using Command-TAB or even clicking on the icon in the dock, instead of the application coming to the front, only the menu bar for that application comes to the front. When I click a second time on the dock icon, the switch completes, and the window comes to the front. But when using Command-TAB it's just left there. I can bring the window to the front, e.g. by doing a keyboard command (e.g. Command-L in Chrome to get into the address bar) but I can't just switch with one move from one window to another. This has changed today, up until now it's been fine. It changed around the same time I had a weird file corruption issue in MS Word; I wonder whether they are related? Whether perhaps it's to do with disk corruption. Anyway if you've had a similar problem let me know, I'd be interested to hear any suggestions for how to fix it (e.g. is there a way to flush preference files, and reset? I'll see whether it happens in a new user account).
    Cheers
    Seth

Heya Seth- I just got this wrapped up with a senior specialist; here's what we did.
Oh, little background - this happened to me too seemingly out of the blue BUT coinciding with some corruption that an Erase & Install hopefully took care of.... it was after the E & I that this began to happen.
    Shut Down
Holding shift key & Power On
must hold the Shift key until a progress bar appears (can release the Power button immediately)
    Time will pass
Images will show up much slower (this slows down the Quartz filters...?)
Open up apps.  Now try switching.....
it will be slow but keep your eye on the Menu bar.
    Working (mine did)
    It's a log-in item then.
Restart - this will be sloooooooow.
Back up, Sys Pref - Users & Accounts - log-in items... I took out Growlhelper.
    Worked like a charm.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers,

  • Problems with Application Switching

Alright, first off...sorry for being a noob. I'm trying to do the Command-Tab application switch thing but the problem I'm having is, as I continue to hold down the command key, it switches from application to application by itself. I'm reading that it should only switch to the next one when I tap the tab key, but this is not the case. In fact, it switches so quickly that it's kind of like a game, trying to stop on the program I want. A rather annoying game mind you What the heck am I doing wrong?!?!

You may want to uninstall, then reinstall Logitech Control Center. The latest download for Mac can be found here. The download includes LCC Uninstaller for removing any existing version of LCC.
As FYI, I've stayed "back level" on LCC: I'm running 2.0, but the latest version is 2.1.3. I'm seriously considering switching from LCC to Steermouse for the reasons that follow.
Unfortunately, after version 2.0 Logitech started including the free developer version of Unsanity's APE (Application Enhancer) framework, known as APE Lite, in LCC. They've done this to implement certain functions in their new Revolution-series mice. I neither use nor recommend any Unsanity code. While some people love their interface hacks, I recommend avoiding them: they've often proved problematic, especially after Mac OS X Updates.
APE underlies virtually all Unsanity interface hacks. APE Lite is embedded in many third-party apps, such as some third-party menu bar extras, and even some commercial code, e.g. LCC. In such cases, you'll find APE or APE LIte has been installed without your knowledge. To check this, examine the process list in Activity Monitor for the aped process (APE daemon). If aped is running, then either APE or APE Lite has been installed on your Mac.
Besides the often problematic nature of Unsanity's interface hacks, a potential security exposure was recently identified with APE: see "MOAB-08-01-2007: Application Enhancer (APE) Local Privilege Escalation."
In the interest of being "fair and balanced," Unsanity discusses the MOAB report of the APE vulnerability in the Comments section of this post on their blog. The topic was sidetracked from Macworld to the MOAB report in the comments.
Unsanity's position is that Apple has the Group permissions set incorrectly on the /Library/Frameworks directory, specifically that Group permissions should be Read Only instead of the default setting of Read & Write.
The chmod command noted in the Unsanity blog post, i.e.
    chmod g-w /Library/Frameworks
removes write (w) permissions for Group (g) on the /Library/Frameworks directory.
Secunia Advisory SA23649 rates this vulernability "Not Critical." I disagree with that assessment, especially given the exploit that the MOAB folks posted.
I'm not changing the permissions on my /Library/Directory until Apple makes that official. However, Unsanity may have a point w.r.t. other utilities being able to leverage the same privilege issue.
IMO, the whole APE approach to "patching running code" has significant risks, both from the standpoints of reliability and security. One could easily see how a user could be duped into downloading a root kit or other Trojan that could reset the permissions on /Library/Directory (or anything else) and then implement the APE vulnerability MOAB noted.
So, if you use and like Unsanity hacks, I'd try uninstalling then reinstalling LCC. Otherwise, I'd uninstall LCC and consider purchasing a license for SteerMouse, as doesn't use APE, APE Lite, or other such code. Another option is to license USB Overdrive, which also appears to be free of APE / APE Lite.
Unsanity also provides uninstall instructions for APE here. Another set of uninstall instructions for APE can be found here. However, APE LIte is required for the latest versions of LCC an any other third-party app that depends on APE / APE Lite functions.
    Good luck!

  • Application Switching not working in Spaces

I'm having some trouble with Spaces and Application switching. Randomly the feature that switches the space to the right Application when you click on the dock stops working. The menu bar will change to the right application but the window and space will stay the same. Clicking the Window menu and selecting the window you want to go to doesn't work either. This problem also persists if you are in another Application like Safari and another application is behind it. You click the application in the dock and the menu bar changes, but Safari (or whatever program you were in before) stays in the front. The only way to switch is to manually click the spaces button on the dock and select the window you want which can get really annoying. A computer restart fixes the problem but I don't like having to restart my computer every other day or so.

Well, my mouse issue turned out to be a Logitech Control Center/ Leopard issue. It was resolved with an update from Logitech but Spaces is still buggin' hard. When I try to switch spaces using Spaces this is what happens:
I'm in Mail (space 3) and I wish to switch to Safari (space 1)
I open spaces, click on space one and things become slow-motion the menu bar switches to Safari but the window switches to iTunes (space 2)
This stops with a restart but eventually it starts happening again. I switch fine if I click the application icon in the dock but not if I use Spaces.
Irrelevant of this bug but another recent freakout occurred when iTunes stopped dragging and dropping so I restarted. I was greeted with a hang on the grey screen with the black wheel for several hours. I eventually got it to power down again. I then pulled the power cord from the back, reconnected it and it restarted. All was fine until the return of the SpaceBug a few minutes ago.

  • Finder, Doc, Application switcher all crash in 10.5.2

A few weeks ago I noticed that my lower ram slot in my Powerbook G4 15" 1.3G stopped reading the ram. I did a quick search and found that there was a recall for a similar problem in other powerbooks. I thought I could get away with buying a 1G chip and installing it in the upper slot. This worked for about a day.
I also recently downloaded the most recent security updates and printer updates and whatever else...
I'm not sure any of this is related.
Here's my problem now... My computer starts up fine, although it looks like the blue screen is up at startup for a few more seconds than it used to be. I then have a window of 1-5 minutes to work. During this window of time I can open applications (mostly Word, Excel, Firefox), work in them, switch between them, etc...
Every time after 1-5 minutes I stop being able to switch between applications and the menus in the menu bar stop working (the headers are visible, but nothing happens when they are clicked). When I push command-tab to switch I get an alert noise and application switcher does not come up. If I click on an open window for a different application or even the finder, it does not switch. When I click on other applications in the doc they do not open.
If I quit the one application that is allowing me to work in it, my menu bar disappears, and my computer is crashed. The ONLY way to get out of this, once it happens, is to hold down the power key and do a hard reboot.
Any help would be appreciated. I am completely stumped and want to hold onto this computer for as long as I can.

I am suspicious that your hard drive is bad. Can you boot from the OSX DVD and run some of those apps normally? Tried the Apple hardware Test (AHD) from the OS DVD?
If you had a clone of your internal drive on a Firewire external drive, you could boot from that to test. If you don't, I recommend you do as a backup of all your data as well as a trouble shooting tool.

  • Mail and contacts not showing in application switcher

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, mail and contacts are not showing in the application switcher.
So,  I have to re-open mail and contacts if I switch screens - it is absolutely infuriating because I constantly switch screens when I work.
Does anyone else have the same issue?    My mail and contacts are on exchange server,  which may have something to do with it?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Problems with the BBkey (also known as the menu key)

Sometimes when I am in an app and want to click on one of the items in the menu list (e.g., delete), when I click on the menu key, what pops up are some of the icons from the home page.  (I am getting really tired of looking at that little penguin....).  If i persist, I can usually get the menu option to pop up, but it's annoying.  I am pretty sure it is a software problem.  I had this problem after some time on my first Tour.  I had to replace that because of other issues.  I used the Device Switch Wizard to transfer everything, so I guess it also transferred whatever is causing this issue.
Is anyone else having this problem?  Any ideas about what to do?  I don't want to re-install the OS-- I'd rather put up with the problem.  Thanks.
    Liz
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi again!
The BBKey/Menu key has two functions...
    1) To bring up a context-sensitive menu for the app you are in
    2) To bring up the app-switcher ribbon (a list of all of your currently running apps so that you can quickly change to a different app)
The difference is how long you hold the key down. For 1, it's a quick press and release. For 2, it's a hold down. Sometimes, it gets it wrong, but with practice you will be able to get what you want most of the time (not 100% though...I still get the wrong result sometimes).
    Hope that helps!

You sure have an interesting cluster of problems! It sounds like the laptop can boot up and get started, then at some point it runs into trouble with available ram. The bad ram slot might suggest a serious problem with the logic board. Your ram chip could also be bad. Do you have an original ram chip to swap out and test? Do you have the hard ware test CD that came with the machine?

  • How do I script the Application Switcher?

I would like to write a script that brings up the application switcher, to allow its use without having to use the actual "command-tab" keyboard shortcut. This seems like a very simple thing, but I haven't been able to find any solution.
I initially thought that I might be able to access the application switcher directly through the Finder or System Events libraries, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Then I turned to just having applescript execute the keyboard shortcut directly. While I can do a "keystroke tab using command down", what I want is to bring the app switcher menu up and leave it. Using a keyboard, I would hit control-tab, then continue to hold command (during which time I can do things like use the arrow keys). So I thought I would have my script simulate this behavior. Unfortunately I gather that modifier keys can only be modifiers for other keys, not held alone (with a "key down command" line). Is this correct?
Any other ideas? Ideally I want one script to bring up the app switcher (or do command-tab, with command left held) and another script to dismiss the switcher, choosing the app selected (or releasing the command key).

While the System Events script presented here, which you've tried, and a variation of which I've used in the past, might seem worthwhile, it is actually fraught with at least two potentially dangerous gotchas.
Problem one: Your Command key will be tied up for the duration of the script, as determined by the specified delay time, even if you dismiss the Application Switcher palette early by clicking off it. That means no use of your keyboard or mouse for the full 10 seconds (or however many seconds you specify) without the Command key acting as a modifier for whatever action you might want to take, in whatever application you're in. For example, clicking on a docked application icon during this 10-second delay will not switch to that application as you might expect, but will instead reveal its location in the Finder -- normal behavior when a docked icon is otherwise intentionally Command-clicked. Attempting to kill the script early by pressing ⌘. will only make things worse.
Problem two: Attempting to kill the script early by pressing ⌘. might not allow the script to reach the *key up* command, which is critical. If you don't allow the script to reach the *key up* command, your Mac will remain in a state where your Command key is virtually kept held down, rendering your keyboard useless, and producing the kind of mouse weirdness described above, +even after exiting the script.+ Logging out and back in to your account does cure this condition, however. Fortunately, should this unpleasant situation arise, you can avoid the need to log out by keeping a ready-made script +saved as an application+ available in your Script menu and running it if needed:
    *tell application "System Events"*
    *key up command*
    *end tell*
    Just my 2¢... Good luck.

  • Application Switcher Not Working correctly

Selecting a program opens desired program properly(as displayed in Menu Bar) but will not open the corresponding program's open windows until selecting program in a Mission Control desktop. After selecting the desktop to which the program is attached and clicking on the program then the open windows will be properly displayed.
Application Switcher seems to work correctly and open the corresponding windows within a desktop if programs are attached to a particular desktop but will not open the corresponding open windows if the programs are located on different desktops - i.e. Mail Windows will not open if Safari windows are displayed because programs are on two different desktops.

Cool. Learn a new trick every day... It works on my English keyboard (with the Q).
Maybe the "oddity" has been fixed and it is no longer A on the French keyboard, but Q, as it should be.
