MenuList shortcut in Forte 3.5

hi,
Does anyone know about this ? Forte 3.5 MenuList does not respond to the first letter of a menulistitem being used to access the item?
Ex. in 3.5 if a menulist looks like this,
AlphaList ---> Menu list name
A for Apple ---- > List item
B for Balloon
C for Cat
When the focus is on AlphaList, pressing key A does not take me to the item 'A for Apple'
Same code used to work in Forte 3.L though!

  • Specifying Repository Name in the Forte Shortcut

I have been looking for information on how to specify the Repository Name
with the Forte shortcut. I have a couple of repositories and I would
like to create a Forte shortcut for each repository. I am running Forte
3.0.E.0 on an NT 4.0 box. I have been trying the following command:
c:\forte\install\bin\ftcmd.exe run "forte -fr bt:central -fnd
    <nodename>"
Where central is the name of the physical repository on <nodename>. I've
tried several variations without success and cannot connect with the
CentralRepository. Any suggestions? I know that I can startup the Forte
Control Panel and specify the name on that dialog, but that is tedious
when trying to switch between multiple repositories. Thanks.

It looks like you are not using the proper syntax for ftcmd. Refer to "A Guide to the Forte Workshops" p51,54 for the complete list of flags for ftcmd.
I believe the following is what you should use. If you are accessing a repos through a rpserver, then the repos flag needs the repos name and does not need the repos type (bt). The repos name is the value for the -n flag for the rpserver.
c:\forte\install\bin\ftcmd.exe -fnd nodename -fr central run forte
    Hope this helps,

  • Re: (forte-users) Forte on Solarix box problem

    Hi All,
Thank you very much, for all the help you
people extended towards this problem. Its solved, the
problem was i had 2 users, and i started from one user
Nodemanager ( which does not have oracle home path
set) and from the other user id, i started the
launcher, ( which have oracle home set), so the
application, was running locally, but when i
distributed the application, it was not finding oracle
home variable from the other user, from which node
manager was started. So that was the problem. I found
    this specifically after setting FORTE_STACK_SIZE,
variable(as suggested by Thomas), it was throwing
error saying that, tns name is not resolved,( kudos to
    Thomas :) ).
    Once again thank you all.

    Hi Babu,
ok, maybe we need to go now a bit more in some
    details of
your Forte nodemanager environment on the Sparc
    Solaris box.
Q1: Which operating system release ? Solaris
    2.51,2.6,7 or 8 ?
Q2: Which Forte Release are you running on all nodes
Q3: Where's the Forte environment manager located ?
Q4: Which Oracle RDBMS release have you installed on
    the Sun ?
Q5: Which Oracle client release have you probably
    installed
on your PC which is running NT4 I guess ?
(These questions are just the generic Tech Support
    approach
to get an idea about your environment).
Q6: You mentioned in your very first message that
    during
Forte installation on the Sun, you've left the
    path to
Oracle empty....it is mandatory for the Forte
    nodemanager
on any box/operating system to find in its
    environment
    the relevant third party environmental
    informations...
For Oracle the Forte nodemanager on Sun
    requires a
    valid setting for ORACLE_HOME !
Could you send me the complete environment for
    the user
who is starting the Forte nodemanager on your
    Sun ?
Q7: This is more a necessary suggestion than a
    question
but is and when yes, how have you setted
    FORTE_STACK_SIZE
    on the Sun ?
If it's not there or only set as
    FORTE_STACK_SIZE=42000,
then add or reconfigure FORTE_STACK_SIZE to
    100000 in the
    nodemanager's environment and re-boot the
    nodemanager!
Q8: Once more a recommendation than question but can
    you
just try to access your Oracle DB instance with
    the Forte
sample program DynamicSQL ? You will find this
    in
    the $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/database
    directory
and it will require the Utility plan that you
    may import
    from $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/frame .
Try to access your Oracle instance from local
    directly
out of your workspace and later on full
    distributed
via an own Forte server partition from the
    Partition
Workshop. Send to me all errors thrown during
    these
procedures on the client and within the remote
    server
    partition logfile on the Sun.
BTW: When you can access the Oracle RDBMS running in
    the
Forte IDE locally, this is an indicator to me that
    you have
setted up the Oracle client on your PC and have
    configured
Oracle locally correctly (tnsnames.ora) to connect
    to your
remote Oracle instance...hence when test running
    locally, Forte
will use this locally configured Oracle SQL*Net V2
    client
to connect to your remote Oracle RDBMS instance.
    That's one
shortcut making it possible for you as the Forte
    developer
to debug DB access within the Forte IDE...when
    running completly
distributed debugging of remote partitions is not
    possible.

  • Forte Migration - Need Suggestion regarding Forte Migration.

    Hi friends,
I need some suggestion in designing GUI.
we have an application designed on mainframes and also in forte. And lots of users life the mainframes, since they have been using for long time and it is easy for data entry and it is faster and by hitting F2/F4 keys the data entry people finish the work fast and they is incentive to do fast and more.
And we have the same application in Forte too, Forte GUI design is also great, it provides lots of data compared to mainframes, but little slower and it cannot be done in the same speed as mainframes.
In such a situation, if you have to migrate what technology would you opt and how to think about converting the console based forte application, which also provides in data entry and provides lots of information.
And it is process oriented, where we could like complete one step before going to other step and also go and modify the data entered in step1. Example, while entering the telephone order, after validating customer details, we would like to provide telephone services. But we should be also able to modify the customer information.
The reason I gave the example before, if you think about using J2EE and provide Web browser interface, which would be best and cut lots of cost and time on deployment (usually in case of Forte console based application), but major draw back would be we cannot control the users activity and you cannot back and forth and update the data. (Think about lot of Tab in Forte application.).
So, the need is for thin client and lots of Tabs and user should be able to go back and forth and real fast application client like mainframes to enter lots of data fast and provider look up for validations.
How would you do migration for such a application ?
    1.     J2EE, how would you think about providing user interface. (web browser or java console application using swing) ? Did any body of you done using swing.
    2.     .NET application. (client using ASP.NET with C# for business logic/middle tier)
Please give me some suggestion and how did you migrate under such circumstances.
I know, it is difficult to suggest without seeing the application, but please give me the high level idea. May be you much also faced similar situation.
    Thanks in advance.

NET, Swing, Web - all provide options to allow back and forth moving from one tab to the other.
However, No matter how fast the screens are in web, they are a fraction of a second slower when the browser renders the screen.
This is not controlled by programming and it is the browser that takes time. In such scenario, going for Swing may be a better option
All of them support the shortcut keys- Going to Web - you may need to forgo some of the function keys - like f5 for refresh.
You can also introduce numbers in front of values in combos - for easy input of data.
We have experience in migrating thick client to web and thick client to thick client. Please contact me if you need more info.

  • RE: NT Server Reboot and Forte Partitions[Ref:C943460]

    Hi Bradley.
At our customers, we need one of our Forte applications to be running for data
communications to take place. After a reboot, we need this application's
partitions to come online. The way we did this (as you suggested) was to use a
BAT file, and then install this as an NT service (we used a utility that comes
with the NT resource kit - srvany).
This works fine for us. One of the issues we had was that the partitions tried
to come online before Oracle was running - this resulted in the dbsessions
failing and the partitions not coming online. We got round this by preceding
starting the partitions with a loop that polled Oracle until it was up. Needless
to say, piping all output to log files was essential for us to figure out what
    was going on.

I have a system administration question for users with NT servers in
their Forte environment. If I have installed Forte partitions on an NT
server which I would like to startup when the server is rebooted, then
what are my options for scripting this to happen automatically?
Currently the only Forte process on the server which starts up
automatically is the Forte node manager, through the installed NT
service. I have been contemplating setting up a BAT file process as an
NT service which would wait for the Forte node manager service to start,
and then execute an fscript file to start the required forte partitions.
How is this situation being handled in other environments? Thanks.

    Hi Brad,
I am not sure if this is the right solution in the long run, but if you
login into NT after reebot you can create a simple client that "pings" your
service objects and put the shortcut into the Startup Group. I think such a
client may also be useful to monitor your Forte server for application
specific parameters, instead of relying only on logs/econsole.

  • Access Keys / Keyboard Shortcuts / Mnemonics

I am trying to use the SetAsFunctionKey method and FunctionKeyPress
event to define keyboard shortcuts for window widgets such as buttons on
    a Windows 95 client running Forte 3.0.E.
If I add the ampersand (&) to the caption of a button, the letter
following the ampersand is underlined. Normally, in other development
tools such as Visual Basic, if you do this for a button, then clicking
the ALT key along with that one letter automatically fires the Click
event for the button. There is no other coding necessary. I basically
    have two questions:
    1. Is there a better way of implementing this in Forte, other than using
    the SetAsFunctionKey method?
    2. If not, I have the following dilemma. My application consists of a
main window and several nested windows. The nested windows do not have
their own event loops, instead, they have Event Handlers that are
registered in the parent window. Both the parent window and its nested
windows need the keyboard shortcuts and would therefore need to register
for the FunctionKeyPress event. The problem is if I register for the
event in the nested window, the registration of that same event in the
parent window is overridden, effectively disabling my ability to process
the keyboard shortcut for the parent window. I am assuming that since
there is only one event loop in this scenario, it is the only one that
receives the FunctionKeyPress event. Is there any way to make this work
without making the parent window aware of all the keyboard shortcuts of
    its nested windows?

    I am using forte 3E under NT4.
I also can capture the speed key press, but I cant stop the warning
beep that is generated automatically by windows. Maybe this doesnt
happen under win95, or maybe you have the warning beep turned off in
    your control panel.

Which version of Forte are you using? I wrote a quick test program using
3.0.E and contrary to the documentation, I am able to capture the
Alt-key shortcut on my Windows 95 client.

I have also used the SetAsFunctioKey method to implement Alt-Key
shortcuts, but have found that because windows does not recognise my
pretend shortcut, it beeps a warning whenever the Alt-Key combination
    is pressed.
Has anyone found a way of stopping this from happening (without
changing the window control panel settings).

  • Integrating E-Mail into a Forte Application

    Hello!
I am working with a group of new Forte developers and we are investigating how we can add internet mail capabilities to a Forte application. Some of the things that we would like to do include:
    - the ability to send internet mail from within a window.
    - the ability to mail a 'shortcut' to another user so that when they received the shortcut, it would automatically launch the application with the pertinent data loaded. (this may be a stretch of the imagination?!?)
Can someone give me any hints as to the best way to approach either of the above issues?
I have obtained some information about various internet mail controls that can be purchased that will allow a developer to integrate mail into their application - does anyone have any experience with using any 3rd party controls? - or is one even required?
    Thank you in advance.

  • NT Server Reboot and Forte Partitions

  • FW: Create Econsole shortcut.... [Ref:C563592]

    Hi Damiao
We had the same problem, trying to look at the environment at any one of our
    customers
(without changing the Forte Control, Panel). We're running 3E.
Forte logged this as a bug in that it is difficult to get ftcmd to read the -fns

solutions, one of which we use at the moment. It involves running econsole with
    ftexec rather than ftcmd
(ie. the way version 2 use to).
    Try C:\forte\install\bin\ftexec.exe -fi

  • SetAsFuncitonKey() and shortcut keys

SetAsFuncitonKey() seemigly provides shortcut key functionality -- but this
proves not to be the case as once you register a key as a funciton key,
anytime you press that key, whichever widget has focus will post an
AfterValueChange event. This creates a lot of conflicts once you register
a bunch of function keys and do some validations on AfterValueChange.
Workarounds might include the ability to register key+modifier with
SetAsFunctionKey() or to have a reason attribute on the AfterValueChange
event -- but neither currently exist in Forte.
Does anybody have any workarounds so that using SeyAsFuncitonKey() does not
result in the extraneous AfterValueChange events?
If not, does anybody have any good workarounds for creating shortcut keys
-- without having to use the menu bar.
    Thanks.

Forte is fine but the default folder it starts in depends on where it was loaded from. For Windows, the current folder will be the
%FORTE_HOME%\bin folder or whatever was set in the shortcut.
Workaround: create a new project and mount a new folder (directory if you like). Then close Forte and make a new Shortcut with the Start In field set to the project's home folder. Use the shortcut to start Forte.

  • How to delete "duplicate shortcuts" on Launchpad?

I had recently encountered duplication of "shortcuts" on Lion OS's "Launchpad" when I installed several application, this problem bothered me a lot so I'd searched the net on forums regarding this, some says use the "Terminal app"...blaah, blaah so on and so fort.
    Here's the best step-by-step solution:
    a. install an application called "Mackeeper"
    b. once installed, click "Smart Uninstaller" on the "Cleaning Section"
    c. wait for the search results, the maneuver your way to the desired apps that you want to delete
    d. if you're not so sure about the exact apps to be deleted since they have the same name, just click the apps and click the "Quick Look"
    e. finally, click remove.
Hope to help you guys on this issue on the Launchpad.
    Cheers.

I would NOT recommend downloading MacKeeper at all. It is unnecessary, unhelpful, and all around not good for your Mac.
If you do experience this "duplicate shortcut" problem, however, you can click and hold your cursor on any icon, and click the little "X" that appears in the top left, exactly as you would deleting an App on your iPhone.
