Menus in FCE?

Can chapter menus be created in FCE similar to those found in commercial DVDs?

Chapter menus are not created in FCE. They're created in the DVD authoring application. Chapter markers can be created in FCE. These are used in the menus to trigger jump points in the video.

  • Missing "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview" options

I am missing this option from View/Video Out on my MacBook Pro with a working second monitor, even after a 'refresh devices'.
However, I know it was present before. In fact, when I run FCE on my G4 Mac Mini, I see the option and am able to use it. I've read the section of the manual pertaining to this, and it refers to non-existent menus (in FCE, I believe it was borrowed material from the FCP manual).
I've done the following to troubleshoot:
    - run under a newly created user
    - trashed all obviously related (quicktime, FCE) prefs files.
    - Ended all other processes in the dock save Finder & Dashboard
    - removed all custom menu bar items (i.e. menumeters, etc.)
Any ideas? As I said I used this feature to output full screen video to my second monitor with my last job.

Back in September, when the 24" iMac was introduced, I was in an Apple Store and the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview was missing from ALL their computers loaded with FCE 3.5.

  • FCE menus greyed out after render.

If I have a large render task and leave for an hour or so, when I return all of my toolbar dropdowns (save, etc) are greyed out and I can't do anything but force quit and start over. This has started occuring after upgrading to Tiger.
    Any advice?

I had this problem some months ago, but don't have it anymore. What worked for me was: try to close the project (either by CTRL-W in the browser, or perhaps just clicking on the close button at the top left corner of the browser window). When the confirmation dialog comes up, cancel it. After cancelling, the menus should come back (your mileage may vary).
Why I don't have this problem now, I'm not sure. I've been running Tiger & QT 7.0.1 for sometime now, and don't have the problem. If anything, Tiger might have fixed the problem.

  • I cannot drag FCE browser to my auxiliary monitor

OK. My mini-DVI to VGA adaptor arrived an hour ago (thanks Apple) which I bought just as suggested by my good online friends here at the forum (thanks guys.)
I plugged it in and there, to my delight, is the Apple screen saver. Great.
But how do I get, say, my FCE browser over to it? I consulted my oracle (thanks author Tom) and Page 14 tells me to hold down the Option key, then Window-Arrange-Set Custom layout, all of which I did. Nothing happened. Nothing stirred. No menus appeared. The planet was just as it was ten seconds earlier.
I re-read the instructions. They had no changed, either. I dove into the forum archives and went back many many strings. Nada.
    Now what?
I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

Yikes. I think I am over my head.
I followed your suggestion and was given a choice of mirroring or nothing.
I chose nothing. That's what I got. Nothing. So I chose mirroring. Bingo. There on my extra monitor was a replica of my Apple screen - the Safari one I was using, and a copy of my cursor. But the page on my Mac is swollen. So much so that I can't see or reach the corners with all those useful bits of purpose. The type is blurred slightly. And of course, mirroring is not what I want, is it? I want to have something different on my extra monitor, not the same thing.
Any thought on how I can set this up as an external when that option does not seem to be offered? What am I missing?

  • Large Files to DVD from FCE

What are your best ideas for putting a two-hour Final Cut Express file onto DVD? What I'm doing is exporting to QuickTime, then using iDVD, but I wonder if there's something better, i.e. quicker.
    Thanks for any input.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I'd suggest the following -
Export from FCE as a Quicktime Movie and be sure to uncheck the option for "Make movie self-contained". This will generate a QT reference movie, which happens fairly quickly compared to creating a self-contained movie.
Import your QT reference movie into iDVD, select your template, etc. and build your DVD project.
In iDVD, burn to a disk image on your HD instead of directly to a DVD disk. Then use Disk Utility to burn your DVD disks. The overall process seems to go faster this way. If you keep the disk image you can burn more DVDs anytime at just the time it takes to burn, without having to wait for iDVD to prepare menus or rendering any video again.
I let iDVD render overnight, so I've never actually timed the entire rendering process however on my 2.0GHz/G5/SP, once I have the disk image it takes about 50 min to burn a 2 hour movie to a 2.4x DL-DVD disk.
To get a 2-hour movie at maximum quality (assuming at least 1 template and a menu or two), I'd suggest using dual-layer DVDs. Technically you can get 2 hours on a single layer DVD but you will sacrifice some quality in the process. (Note - select Best Quality, not Best Performance in your iDVD Preferences).

  • Does someone use FCE together with Sony SR10, SR11 or SR12?

I've tried to get a YES or NO in some discussions here and since I'm not alone with the FCE/AVCHD rendering issue, I'm kind of hoping that someone using Final Cut Express (or any other good Mac software) have got this to work. I've just tried FCE together with my camcorder once in a Mac store and the person working in the store, who showed me the new Macbook Pro didn't know anything about this either. The problem I noticed was that after import of the media from camera everything looked just fine but once I dragged one clip down on the timeline FCE had to render the clip before I could watch the project. This is not news but I wonder what settings one should use in FCE together with the Sony SR12 camcorder. Is there a way to setup the project so that FCE doesn't have to render all the time using full quality AVCHD clips? If it's not possible, is there any other Mac program that will work with AVCHD natively? Maybe the solution is to switch the camera to SD instead? What happens if I do that? If I shoot in highest MPG quality, does FCE handle those clips on the timeline without rendering the clips after every change I do?
My thoughts about this is to get a howto/check-list from someone who know and then visit this Mac store once more with my camera and try it out.
    Regards
    Robert Nilsson
(PC owner who really would like to use the new Macbook Pro)

When you say import, did you mean the Import command in the menus? You don't use Import with AVCHD, you use the Log and Transfer command in the File Menu. That bring up another window which looks for your camera which it calls No Name and thn begins logging in each clip. From there you have to select the clips you want to load into the editor. Each of those clips must then be "rendered" by a HD Apple Intermdiate Codec, which is the rendering you see. Once "rendered" in Final Cut, when you drag them in the timeline, they are ready to go. There is no Mac Program that natively uses AVHCD, but Sony makes a product called Vegas for Windows that edits native AVCHD, though as I understand, it isn't as powerful as Final Cut.

  • Which Sony Camera to buy to work with FCE HD?

I'm looking at either the Sony HDR FX1E HDV or Sony HDR HC1E HDV.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi(Bonjour)!
That depends of what are your needs...
Both models works well with FCE HD 3.5 .
Try some research on the web for a comparaison between those two models. Look at:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/SonyHandycam_HDR_HC3/4505-65007-31749257.html?tag=tpr
    and
    http://reviews.cnet.com/SonyHDR_FX1/4505-65007-31085889.html
The FX1E (E stands for european model) seems to be more semi-professionnal (3 CCD chips, big lens, big form factory, more manual controls and big price) than HC1(one CMOS chip, smaller case, operation by screen menus). But the HC1 would give good results either. Pay attention that HC1 is actualy replaced by a newer model: HC3 for the same price. May be you can find a bargain price for a new HC1.
It's a matter of finding to good balance between your needs and your wallet...
Remember that HDV needs powerful computer with plenty of RAM and space on hard disk, but that image quality is fantastic. (a dual G5 with 4.5 Gig RAM is a such powerfull computer).
Actually, your options for distibuting HDV natively are limited to play final movie from your camcorder. There is not DVD burner that support HDV right now. (do a search in this forum under "HDV, iDVD DVD burner"

  • Cannot capture footage to FCE using a JVC-HDGR1u in DV mode

HELP ME PLEASE! I am so lost. I didn't notice I was recording my footage in DV mode on my JVC HD-GR1u and I MUST get it off and edit it... unfortunately its precious footage. I know the JVC HD-GR1u  IS compatible with FCE because normally I use the apple HD interface however... I cannot figure out the settings for this mode!!!!! I have tried numerous settings and I either get a black screen with "final cut express" and the apple logo.. or I get the colored bars in saying it cannot recognize the initial deck.... I cannot figure this out..

Are you sure you didn't actually mean the JVC GR-HD1?
Two things on the camera - in the camera's setup menus, set the System Menu > iLink Output setting to "SW".  Also, on the side of the camera, set the iLink output switch to "DV"
Two things in FCE - select the DV NTSC easy setup (assuming you are in North America). After selecting this easy setup, create a new sequence.
Then connect your camera to your Mac (using a FireWire cable (aka iLink cable)).  Then turn it on in playback mode.  Then start up FCE.  FCE should detect the camera and you should then be able to capture the DV video.
One small potential gotcha - if you shot the video with 12-bit audio you will need to select the DV NTSC 32KHz easy setup.  (12-bit audio = 32KHz audio).  Unfortunately most DV camcorders have a factory default setting of 12-bit audio and if you did not change it to 16-bit audio you will have to use the DV NTSC 32KHz easy setup in FCE.

  • Best way to import video to iweb??? FCE or imovie?

I am putting a video website together and create the videos in FCE -- I have found that I can save as QT and drag to the page I am making or I can post it thru iweb (am I correct?) I wasn't sure if uploading to imovie then posting it would make it more web friendly???
is there a preferred export setting thru FCE QT conversion to use??
    THanks
you can see how I have the videos set up now. www.piercemediaproductions.com
BTW. is there a prefered way to post videos on the iweb templates. ( meaning I use the blog and the podcst area as well as just blank pages to post clips as well. I wasn't sure if search engines find you based on where the video is???
    TIM

I'm going to answer the last part of your post and leave the rest to those that know something about movies!
If you put more than one movie per page, the download time will be slow.
I personally wouldn't use the blog or podcast format because you are dependent on the iWeb standard navigation. If you want the search engines to "read" your website, you will have to build your own navigation.
The SE spiders can't watch movies so it would be better to have a page with a frame of each movie, a text description and a (descriptive) link to the individual movie page. The "descriptive" links will show up in your sitemap and should contain key words about the movie to help with SE ranking.
To keep your navigation menu down to a reasonable size, the individual pages would not be contained in the main menu. You can use sub menus for this.
Example of main and sub menus....

  • Is there a Ripple-"cut" function in FCE?

    Hi-
This is something I have been battling for a while. I am pretty sure no such thing exists, but here goes:
In the past, when I have simply wanted to move one clip to another place in the timeline, I have had to
    +1. copy it+
    +2. Ripple delete it+
+3. Paste insert it where I wanted it to go.+
    So here are the questions:
*1. Is there a "Ripple-cut" function in FCE that ripple-deletes the clip while copying it to be pasted later?*
*2. If not, is there a better workflow for the process than the one described above?*

    Thanks Tom,
Sorry for doling out answer points so quickly, I merely assumed that since it wasn't in one of the top menus it didn't exist. I then found out that ripple-delete wasn't in the top menus either, but of course it exists!
Just tried the ripple-cut, and of course it worked. Thanks again Tom, sorry for being so hasty to declare my question solved!
Is there a good site you know of where I could see more of these shortcuts that aren't mentioned in the menus?
P.S. If you ever do another reprint of your book, this might be something to consider adding, since it seems like such a basic requirement! (moving things within the timeline effectively is an important skill to have)

  • How to play DVD without menus?

Hello, I'd like to burn a video clip that I cut in FCE onto a DVD without having to use iDVD and without using any menus. Basically, I want the video to play immediately (once I put it in a DVD player. Any ideas?

    Hi
without having to use iDVD and without using any menus.
    A. No movie editor FC E or P - or - iMovie can deliver what's needed to make a DVD
without any program preparing the needed code - sort of .mpeg2
    B. DVDs without menu can be done in several ways with eg
    • Roxio Toast™ - that can do this without any faking what so ever
    • iDVD - but You have to fake part of it
iDVD - my list on this
    from. Klaus1 in Somerset, UK
How to create a DVD in iDVD6 without menu (there are several options)
    1. Easy. Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously.
Disadvantage. The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy. If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well).
Disadvantage. The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time. Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage. One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software. Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn.
Disadvantage. you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way". Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary. myDVDedit ( www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager.

Most certainly more will fill in - this list is a bit old.

  • FCE/Sony DCR-HC3, doing it right

I was just wondering if I do everything right. I've installed FCE, plugged in my sony HC3. When I start FCE I'm not able to control the camera through FCE. From one of the menus I'm able to start a capture.
In Imovie controlling the cam from within the programm works.
If there is anyone who is able to control, please post the setup from fce and the HC3. TIA
    Scubart

THe HC3 captures HD and standard DV. Importing standard DV into FCE you can set in and out points for importing clips, and FCE controls your camera like in iMovie (make sure your camera is in playback mode). To import HD footage, make sure you set your project to HD in the easy setup menu. You can then set up your new HD project - changes only apply to new projects. If you are importing HD footage, you can only start importing using the capture control. There are none of the camera control features available like in standard DV. Usually starting an import gets the camera rolling, but a few times I have had to press the play button for some reason. Importing HD on my system runs 30 to 40% behind the camera, so you have to watch the camera LCD. You stop the import by hitting the esc key. You may have to wait some time for the computer to process the cached video. Once it is imported you can edit it normally. But if you do a longish movie, be prepared for dropped frames on playback, and long compression times.

  • Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long

Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long will the DVD hold??? if i have an hour and 40 minutes of HD footage all cut together with FCE and has been saved as a movie file, how many hours will IDVD let me burn to it?
if i run over the allowed amount will it say i need to drop quality, i am editing loads at the moment and dont want to get to the end and it come up with an error message. also will idvd include the chapter markers if i export with them?

    Sure, no problem.
    1. Go to Project > Project Info in iDVD.
    2. Make sure "DVD Type" is set to a single-layer DVD.
    3. Under "Encoding," choose "Best Performance." Is the arrow solidly in the green portion of the quality bar? If so, go ahead and burn your disc.
    4. If not, choose "High Quality." Again, go ahead and burn your disc if the arrow is solidly in the green.
    3. If the arrow still isn't in the green, select Professional Quality. If the arrow's in the green, burn your disc. If not, you'll have to delete some of the menus (scene selection, etc.) or menu content and check again. You should be able to burn up to 2 hours if you don't have a lot of other menu content.

  • What is the best FCE 4 Training Book

What is the best recommendation as far as training book?
The one recommended by "Tom Wolsky"?
    Or, the "Visual QuickStart Guide"
I have had good luck with the Visual QuickStart Guides in the past. But if the Tom Wolsky book is better, I'm all for it. On that note; Which book? "Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop"?
    Steve

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Tom's book is a big tutorial book with lessons. It's a very good start to learn using FCE by practice.
Lisa Brenneis's "Quickstart guide FCE for Mac OS X" is a kind of dictionnary presenting all application menus. It's less based on a day to day work.
Both volumes will teach you a lot of FCE.
